Regular Dip Treaty Variant Sun deadlines - hapolley   (Oct 07, 2011, 6:21 pm)
While we wait for the blitz you can try out my Variant to be played with one week deadlines and anticipated Summer and Winter Orders.

If interested email me [hapolley(at)yahoo.ca]

Diplomacy Treaty Variant
=========================
Players are encouraged to make written treaties with other players in the game.

A.1 How Treaties are established!
A treaty sent to The Game Master by email from each party to the treaty will be assigned to a Provence on the board and named with it's start season, end year, and SC abbreviation, and added to a press list of treaties. Eg. Sp02Ber
Observers will only know that Germany has a treaty with another power which ends in Wt02.
A.2 Treaties with the games neutral power are allowed, but can not require the Neutral unit to make any military order. You can not make the treaty with the clause - if a Neutral power's unit is adjacent to my unit it will provide support. However the reverse is allowed. GM controls Neutral power and can declare a treaty violation.
A.3 A Treaty must have at least one military clause to be valid.
Eg. German unit Ber will not enter Pru.
A.4 If an SC assigned to one or more treaties changes Ownership. The new owner may tell the GM to publish all treaties assigned to his new SC. The GM will do so even if new owner is a party to one of the Treaties. It is all treaties published or none, selective publication is not allowed.
B.1 Treaties end!
Treaties must end on a Winter Season and have a maximum life of 3 Game years, starting with the games next season.
B.2 Treaty ended by violation!
A player may ask for a treaty to be ended do to a violation by one or more of the other parties to the treaty. He can not ask for treaty to be ended because he has violated the treaty!
B.3 Treaties end with game!
At end of game all treaties are published.
C.1 Treaty enforcement!
A military move or order which violates a treaty will not be interfered with by the GM!
C.2 If a player notifies the GM at the end of a movement season and before the next movement phase that a treaty has been violated and the GM agrees that the treaty has been violated, the GM will take the following steps:
C.3 He will publish the treaty in the press section of the results, and declare the Treaty null and void.
C.4 He will in the next move season use Engineer Civil Disorder Moves to negate any attacks on adjacent units by the treaty offenders.
D.1 The game starts out gunboat style, to get the name and email of a player you must have a treaty with him. If you can prove to the GM's satisfaction that a party to a valid treaty has passed on your name and e-mail to another player, you can end the treaty before it's expire date.
D.2 Send as attachment proposed treaties to GM who will forward treaties to countries listed in the email. Do not hide parties to the treaty in attachment as on most occasions GM will not read attachment.
D.3 Yes Press is welcome and these are Black Press games.

DC 373: Spring 1913 Adjudication - AceRimmer   (Oct 07, 2011, 3:21 pm)
For Spring 1913, in anticipation of our new German's first set of orders with his small but centrally located force, I bring you a brief quote straight from the Man himself:
"Fortune, which has a great deal of power in other matters but especially in war, can bring about great changes in a situation through very slight forces."
Slight forces. It's almost like a cue line for Maslow's Germans to enter stage left. This season, there's a lot of reshuffling of English forces plus some perhaps crucial movement in the Carpathian Mountains. But there are no retreats. Not even a retreat/disband. So, Fall 1913... with your tacit permission, I'm going to speed us up by a mere day and set the next deadline for Thursday, October 13 at 2:00 p.m. CST.

Hi Eric,

I've heard nothing from England (nor have any other players I've
contacted). Have you received preliminary orders from him? If not,
it might be worth delaying the start to find a replacement rather
than have England NMR right off the bat.

Gareth (Germany)

OK. It's official. Welcome to DC397 (exciting name, right?).
See the country assignments below.

If you aren't on the list, it means you aren't in this
game (and this is the last you'll hear from me). Please do
note however that there is a new standard game (re001) forming
up right behind this one, so no worries.

We'll be following the house rules, available here:

http://www.diplomaticcorp.com/info.php?type=houserules

If you're new to the game, I recommend realpolitik
(adjudication software, good for trying out tactics), which you
can download here:

http://www.diplomaticcorp.com/info.php?type=downloads

I must note that the guys playing France and Austria know
each other outside the game.

Please send it your orders (prelims) promptly. You can send
revisions to your orders all the way up until the deadline, and
if I slide on adjudicating - I will use your last set. Let's go
for zero NMRs!

I like a quick start. Orders for Spring 1901 must be in
by next Wednesday,9 PM.
Expect about a week per turn, Let
me know if you need an extension, or if you have any other
questions or concerns. I'm here to help you have a great game!

Blah blah blah. Let's do this thing!

Eric (your ever loving GM)

Russian EOG, DC391 - Githraine   (Oct 05, 2011, 3:55 pm)
Sorry for the delay all, very busy these days.

I kinda feel bad on this one.

I was the one who convinced the assorted western powers that we should trust England again.

I thought we could make the ERG work.  I was wrong.

The other big question seems to be the pile on of Italy.
As I recall, it was decided before the first move as Italy irritated everyone around him.
This was mostly by telling each of us that another (specified) player was planning to attack.
When we compared notes, he told at least 3 countries that they were going to be betrayed by one of the other 3.
Normal dip?  maybe, but it seemed overly deceptive and unnecessary.

Anyway, it was a good game, I allowed
myself to be stabbed.
I'll see you all on the next board!

This was a bit of an odd game.  Germany from the start was very
demanding; he did not regard Sweden to be Russian territory, which is something
I am not used to.  He also had a pact with Austria that he would bounce me
in Sweden if I moved to Gal.  Kinda pissed me off...so I moved to Gal out
of spite, without even thinking about the consequences.

I should state that Jack and I were not going to be allies at first.
We???ve played in MANY games together...I usually attack him, because there is
nothing more enjoyable than listening to Jack whine.  But once Germany
moved to Tyrolia, it was clear Jack and I should at least communicate and try to
get Turkey working with us against Austria.  Which is what we did.
Turkey and I had agreed to at the very least be peaceful and keep the Black Sea
empty, and it seemed our relationship was going well.  My biggest concerns
were (aside from bossy Germany) France and England.  Jack was going to be
toast (Turkey will recall that I TOLD him what Jack???s fate would be...he would
be down to 3 centers or less by 1902, whine a lot, and quickly lose
interest).  France and England did not have Germany to worry about, as he
was busy meddling in Italy and Austria.  So they had no enemies...France
could swing into the Med, and England up north, and the rest of us would be
squashed.

By 1902 England had agreed to my requests for an alliance.  Germany
didn???t see the level of cooperation coming, which allowed me to move to Swe and
then Den, with England taking Sweden.  At the same time, Turkey came to the
rescue in the Balkans allowing me to take Ser while he took Gre.  So
somehow I was still growing.

1903 arrived, and England and I were quickly dicing and slicing up
Germany.  He had left himself far too exposed, and France was of little
help.  France had also left HIS backside wide open for the English
fleets.  My only disappointment was that Turkey couldn???t get his fleets
into the Med fast enough.  Italy was going down too quickly.

Then I made a true goof.  I use RP to adjudicate games in Eternal
Sunshine and I sometimes click pieces incorrectly.  That???s what I did here
too; I clocked Sev-Bla, and I did NOT mean to.  And I didn???t look at my
orders closely.  But then it was too late, and it only took the slightest
prodding from England to convince me that I should use that error to my
advantage and strike Turkey while the iron was hot.  Germany was
eliminated, so I was going to need to grow from somewhere!  The Ottoman
Empire was the most convenient place, and I snuck into Ankara and Greece, and
actually had to waive a build to keep my DMZ agreement with England.

I don???t know what would have happened.  I believe England could have
worked it into a solo, 70% at least....but I was happy to take the draw.  I
think I played decently after finding myself facing the A/G...the two things I
am proud of would be convincing England to jump in the water with me, and the
Turkish stab, even if it required a bonehead move to put it in place.

Subject: The Zombie Lords
Revealed

Across all of Europe the zombies have rampaged, devouring
the strong and the guilty as well as the weak and the innocent. Military forces
have crested and ebbed again and again in massive violence fighting both with
other nations as well as the against their own former citizen's now turned into
mindless monsters. Throughout the lands speculation has been wild. The public
had considered the rise of the zombies as a sign of god, or a sign of the devil,
blame had been placed on medical testing to reckless disregard to the laws of
church and nature. But as the conflict spread two nations seemed best equipped
to defeat their enemies as well as the zombie hordes.

-------------------------------------------------

The fireplace burned brightly in the corner, but the rest of the lights
were dimmed, causing eerie shadows to dance and twist along the walls. Two men
stand over a large wooden table peering down at documents in front of them,
their shadows cast long over a map of Europe.

"Well, my friend, it appears our plans have worked."

"Yes." came the short answer from a smile curled around a slowly smoldering
cigarette.

"The other nations have all but given up. Perhaps we should release the
vaccine now?" The first voice a bit more nervous than the other.

"I suppose comrade. If you wish." A pair of hands, covered in black leather
gloves smooth over a map of Europe, arrows and crosses showing the routes of
massive armies and their victories. "They all seem ready to cave as it
is."

"Do you ever think that maybe we shouldn't have done it? All those
innocents dead, your countrymen, my country men." A hint of regret fills the
speaker's voice.

"No." The answer firm and direct. "What we have done has ensured the
survival of our nations for the next two centuries. A few million is a small
sacrifice to secure the future for the rest of us."

"Yes... I suppose you are right."

--------------------------------------------------

"What do you mean, it doesn't work?" the army official angrily questioned
the younger man in a lab coat.

"I didn't say it didn't work!" the technician attempted to explain, again,
with frustration mounting in his voice. "It just doesn't always work!"

The commander of the research facility slammed his fist against the desk.
"Damn it man, it either works or it doesn't work. Does it work?"

"Look, here is what happens. In most subjects the vaccine works fine. It
will revert recent zombification victims to human status and prevent future
zombification infections."

"So it works!"

"In MOST subjects!" the technician interrupted, "In very rare cases the
vaccine will appear to work and continue working for months before the subject
begins to... revert."

"Do they all revert?" The commander looked concerned now, as realization
dawned across his face.

"We don't know, we've only be testing for a few years. It seemed to work
perfectly to begin with, but we never had a chance to study the long term
effects before you folks decided to unleash it on the world! What's worse is
there is evidence to suggest that even in healthy non-zombified humans the
vaccine can cause the change to take place in the long term, but we haven't
confirmed whether or not that can happen or how common it will be. We just don't
know."

"And we never will." The commander clasped his hands in front of his chin,
deep in thought.

"What do you mean? We have to research this more, we need to find
out.."

It was the commander's turn to interrupt, "Find out what?" He snapped
angrily, "Whether or not we are all doomed? The vaccine has already been handed
out like candy across the world. If we go public with this information now all
that will happen is the brass will see that we are silenced. No. We bury this
report. We burn it, and we bury it that is the only way we stay alive."

"And... and then what?" the scientist seemed defeated and scared now, as if
reality had come crashing down around him.

"Then we both go home and pray to god that you are wrong."

--------------------------------------------

The sun was shining bright on the shores of Naples. A family was taking an
outing, enjoying the fair weather. Life was finally returning to some semblance
of normal. Along the shoreline various buildings were still in ruins, reminders
of the brutal conflict that had taken place. Several locals had taken to combing
the shore for pieces of scrap metal that would still wash up from the destroyed
fleets. On a good day the scavengers could bring in a hefty load of iron and
steel, on the bad days all they found were bloated half eaten corpses.

Fernando and his family were hoping they'd find neither today. The harbor
wall had done a good job of keeping most of the debris off of this particular
stretch of beach. "Don't go wading in too far!" he called to his children,
"Lunch will be ready soon!" He felt blessed each and every day that his family
had made it through the war untouched. His brother had not been so lucky when
his wife had succumb to the infection and turned on him. He was able to fend her
off, their infant had not been as fortunate. It was a wonder he hadn't killed
himself in grief.

He shook his head, trying to abandon such dark thoughts on a sunny day. It
would have helped had there been a few more families out to enjoy the great
weather. They seemed to have the beach to themselves other than for the strange
figure in the distance who was slowly limping down the beach. Fernando idly
wondered if he'd join them for lunch, he looked like he might be a wounded
soldier from the war...

---------------------------------------------

"Did you bring the proof?" A hushed voice asked from behind a thick wooden
door.

"Ja, it is here, let me in." The short man's eyes darted nervously up and
down the street. As soon as the door was open more than a crack he pushed
through into the foyer of the house in what used to part of the German
Empire.

"Here it is." he said pulling an envelope form his coat. "Documents, they
prove everything."

The older man's eyes lit up and his mouth opened in a wide grin. "So we can
finally prove they started the entire plague. We can prove they were the ones
who caused everything."

"Yes, yes! All we need to do is go public and their hegemony will be
destroyed." The shorter man smiled.

The soft report of a silenced pistol went off and the shorter man clutched
at his abdomen. "I am sorry friend, but what will that do? It won't bring back
the German Empire, it won't bring back our rule. But what they will do is pay
for silence, and pay handsomely, and that money, and time, can buy influence
and, ultimately, revenge."

The shorter man attempted to speak but no sound would come, he could feel
the blood flooding into his lungs, drowning him like so many German soldiers
drowned in the northern seas.

End of Game Results

Russia/England Draw was voted up by everyone. I apologize for the delay,
but I wanted time to give you guys a slightly more enjoyable end game email. A
final map will be distributed/uploaded as soon as I get back onto my laptop and
off a work computer. I hope you all enjoyed the game and were willing to forgive
the minor delays and setbacks. I hope you enjoyed my ending story lines as well.
I felt I needed to give you something special after delaying so many deadlines
on my part. Feel free to give me any feedback you'd like and thanks for
playing.

Robert, thank you for being an excellent GM for the duration of this game. Your timely adjudications and good cheer are an appreciated service to the community.

This was my first time playing Ambition & Empire. I very much enjoy DP variants, as well as the 1900 variant. As such this seemed like a variant that I would really like. Thanks Robert for taking the lead on creating the DP module!

Looking over the board as Russia, independent of the other power assignments, my desire was to work with Sweden and Turkey, and push out thru the middle. Of course, once you begin considering the other players and the inter-personal dynamics all of this can change, but I had played with both Wladimir (Sweden) and Aidan (Turkey) before and know them to be very good as well as generally reliable partners. On the other hand, Adriaan (Austria) was new to me and Ray (Saxony) is the kind of aggressive and unpredictable player I don't really like playing with. Nick (Prussia) is someone I like to play with but because of an earlier game together was not sure if he might be carrying a grudge over to this game. So the turning of the board seemed to favour the approach I hoped to take.

Of course, there was a problem: I'm a big believer in ignoring "entitlements" based on what country one is playing. So, for example, I'm a proponent in Standard of a great EF being enabled by France letting Britain take Brest with a fleet and thus being free to do a lot of safe DMZ'ing in the region. My read of the Russo-Swedish relationship was the same. I thought we could have an amazing partnership if he let me take Abo - to close my back door - we DMZ BOT and otherwise leave the Baltic to him. Unfortunately Wladimir didn't seem keen on this which led me to quickly pivot and expect to go for Baltic domination at some point. Just not too soon...

On the other hand, things were going swimmingly with Aidan. We had limited friction and a clear path forward. My intention was to stay with him all game or, at least, into the late game. Ray aggressively demanded Lithuania reinforcing the notion I wouldn't want to work with him. Lithuania is adjacent to various Russian dots yet only adjacent to a lone Saxon supply center. His brazen insistence on control of it was incompatible with any clear-minded Russia policy. Nick was friendly and working with me, so there seemed an opportunity to partner with him in the early going. The thing I didn't expect was my relationship with Adriaan. For me Diplomacy is as much about a good experience as winning, and Adriaan was just the kind of chap I like to play with: very communicative, open with information, although quite smart and likely working to his advantage separately even as he worked in earnest with me. Early efforts to work closely in a press capacity with Britain, France and Spain were largely ignored by those players.

Throwing all of this into the mix, my plan was to:

- Seal off the south and coordinate with Turkey

- Use press to quagmire Denmark and Sweden, while not letting Britain or Prussia take advantage of their struggles

- Smash Poland and reduce/eliminate him

- Once established in central/eastern Europe, decide on which direction to focus my force (at Austria, at Prussia, at the Baltic)

From the beginning I was blessed with good fortune, and my activities were so successful that I needed to pull back on the reins out of fear that a target would be placed squarely on my back. The situation on the board led to my working against Prussia first after Saxony, then heading into the Baltic to take advantage of the chaos happening between the Scandinavian powers. Around this time I had some very positive notes with Britain and thought he and I would be close through the mid and end game. I'm not sure I could have designed a better early and early-mid game than what actually happened for Russia. Lots of good luck all around.

Then, the game changed. For personal reasons Adriaan needed to abdicate the Austrian throne. While from a personal standpoint I was very disappointed, from a game perspective I was pleased: my capacity to grow, save stabbing Austria or Turkey, had pretty much come to an end. I didn't want to stab either of those players so was settling into a position that should end the game in a draw. While I had no problem with that, playing it out to its inevitable conclusion, taking that tack would not give me a whole lot to do in the game while hoping people on the other side of the map took care of business properly. Not a great position to be in.

The new Austrian player (Sun) is also someone I like working with in Dip games. So, at first, the shift didn't seem to portend any change in status. This all shifted when Sun took advantage of Adriaan's very strong position and made an early solo bid by smashing to the west. It was audacious and even well-executed, but he simply faced too much opposition, given the mature nature of the players of this game, leading to balance of power reactions to such moves. However, Sun's big move and subsequently putting a target square on his forehead gave me a chance to break out, too. The big question was, to move against Austria or Turkey?

I chose Turkey. While I very much valued my relationship with Aidan, Sun's growth and the condition of the board led me to think that, if I could prosecute a successful campaign, almost all of the gains would be mine and, in the process, I could seal an entire front and better focus my force elsewhere. Like so many things in this game for me, I had good luck and things pretty much fell as planned, albeit taking quite some time to fully expunge Turkey from their traditional homelands.

As my relationship with Austria blossomed and success against Turkey became clear, I decided I would not be satisfied with anything less that a 3-way draw in this game. My position was very, very strong, particularly so after Sweden and I pushed Britain out of the Baltic completely. So my intent was to fervently pursue 3-way draw opportunities - Austria, myself and a third (which later shifted to include Britain) - while taking a solo only if I was *guaranteed* to get it. My feeling was that, if I went for one and fell short, I would face a grand alliance and a likely 5-way draw. That would have been the worst possible case, save France soloing.

One year before the actual end of the game, it turned out that I could have soloed if I had tried. Like most Dip players I have an overly conservative view as to how much other players trust me and/or will do as I expect them to, and it was with some shock I realized I could have won on that very turn if only I had faith in the relationships I had and the moves those people would make. Seeing that, I knew it was time to scour the board for the solo. However, back from the grave, Ray chirped up to point out that I could likely solo. His bringing that to everyone's attention would only serve to spoil the opportunity as people shifted to defend against it, so I was forced to send out a scathing, lying rebuke to the whole list to keep his siren's call from undermining me.

At that point it was a matter of figuring out whether I could guarantee a solo. I could, but only by eliminating my long-term Swedish ally. I was not willing to do that. I could guarantee taking Mecklenberg and Breslau but the third would be tricky. Constantinople was the best chance, but it was really dicey. Turkey had two fleets adjacent to it, either of which providing a support would have blocked me. While neither had supported Constantinople since it became Austrian, doing so would seem a pro forma order if he didn't have grander plans for either unit. Still, it felt like one of those moments where, if I didn't go for it then, the opportunity would pass. Austria was coming into a build or two, and would certainly be looking for me to back off sometime soon. My hope was that, with my advanced position and all of the builds, even if it failed I would be able to break thru *somewhere* and get the 15th subsequently. Thus, I tried and - anxious until the adjudication arrived - was pleased to see it had worked. Huzzah Russia!

This was an excellent table of players:

Richard Aldous (Spain) didn't respond to a single email I sent him. Not that I could have helped him avoid an early demise necessarily but, well, who knows?!

Josiah Henderson (Denmark) was friendly but not consistently timely or reliable with press. To my detriment I get anxious when people aren't pressing regularly and thus was not too chagrined to contribute to getting him into a Scandinavian quagmire with his neighbours. Would love to play a FTF game with him.

Warren Fleming (France) played one of the best games at the table. He and I had very little communication of substance - some talk of allying in the mid and late games that never came to fruition - but at various points he had spectacular turns of bravery and creativity that shot him into hugely advantageous positions. I look forward to his EOG to try and better understand why he didn't take advantage of some moments when he may have truly been able to break out and win this thing.

Nick Powell (Prussia) is someone I like to play with, and the rare player that I genuinely fear. He thinks many moves ahead, has an excellent strategic sense, and presses very well. I wish I was as good a player as Nick is. We had some good early press but, given my uncertainty about his meta game motivations and the natural need for growth of Russia, was generally pleased he had a hard time of it in this one.

Ray Bruce (Saxony) is as black-and-white as it gets: he's tough, ruthless, smart and relentless. When he tried to play bully with me at the outset it was all the motivation I needed to make him public enemy #1. I love watching Ray play Diplomacy - just not in games that I am also a part of!

Wladimir Mysonski (Sweden) had a tough position to play and was never really able to get started with it. As he pointed out again and again, Denmark and Sweden need to cooperate early if either is going to have a chance to really have an impact in this variant. It just didn't happen in this one. I was glad to have him as a janissary because he's an excellent player and was unflinchingly loyal to the end, including giving me invaluable tactical suggestions along the way.

Michael Thompson (Britain) and I have now played together probably half a dozen times. We always get along well, even though invariably one or the other of us is thrown to the muck each time (I don't think we've ever shared a draw, despite often working together). This game we never really got on track together, and it became perplexing when he offered to help me solo in the early-mid game and then kept consistently working against me! That's a page in his play book that I will need to dog ear. Smile

Aidan Slattery (Turkey) is one of the best players one can possibly ally. He is loyal, contributes lots of smart tactical suggestions, friendly, and a committed balance of power/grand alliance type. I regretted that the turns of the game resulted in his being my mid-game target, as I had always planned to take our relationship thru to the end. I really enjoy working with him.

Adriaan Tichler (Austria I) was a great discovery in this game. He might have been the best player at the table, and really helmed Austria well. I can't wait to play with him again and pick up some pointers.

Sun Chung (Austria II) is yet another player in this game I have a good history of working together with. Sun is a very good defensive player, which made his audacious run for a solo all the more entertaining to watch. He is so adept at slamming the door on possible stabs that it was really to my terrific fortune that the turns and twists of the game led him to be defending himself so completely in the west/southwest. Otherwise, if not for that very extreme and unusual deployment, Sun never would have given me half a chance at this thing.

I look forward to reading all of your EOG's and seeing things from a different perspective. Thanks for the game, all!

Dirk

There were possible retreats from Britain and Austria, but as they would not change the result of a Russian solo, I took the liberty of auto-retreating the units so that all three remained on the board. If for some reason either Michael or Sun would prefer to retreat off the board, let me know and I'll amend the final map. But if you do so, please be aware there will still be no winter builds, so you will not be able to rebuild that unit.

Voted civilization least likely to survive 3 years... The Magicians!

Their last city overrun by Trolls and their great fleet in the High Seas under fire from a tightly orchestrated 3-prong multinational attack led by the slimy, ravenous, gurgling Trolls (who knew they were such tactical naval planners?)... where will they attempt to take to the shores?  Perhaps they could teleport down to Whoville where the Ogres and Samurai continue to wage their war for control of the sleepy Christmas town.  Perhaps a reread of the classic could teach our battle-be-goers that it's not what you take but what you give that counts.

Speaking of giving... every nation with any sort of proximity to the Leprechauns - obviously concerned - sends an envoy to investigate the sudden disappearance of all rainbows.  Will they find a pot of gold?  Or some very nervous Leprechauns...

Lone barbarian spotted wandering around the streets of the Kingdom of Hearts.  When a local interviewer stopped him to discuss the impact of psuedo Knightly Gnomatic traditions on the future of Barbarian cultural institutions in Brennin, he...

...was never heard from again.

Long Time Control - FuzzyLogic   (Oct 04, 2011, 6:26 pm)

Does anybody run a game thats a move per week?
Mojo

Hi,
That isn't too unreasonable. Most games are done on a week per major turn - which usually works out to about 5 days for the major turn followed by 2 days for the retreats or builds. Occasionally you'll see games that do a full 7 days for the major turn. You can always turn in conditional retreats and builds with your movement orders if you want to not have to worry about the 2-day deadline for adjustments...

Hi All,

I would really like to play a game of diplomacy online, but I need a game that runs slow, so that I have enough time to play, diplome, get my moves in, around the rest of my life.

Does anybody run a game thats a move per week?
