DC327 - Spring 19 adjudication - FuzzyLogic (Mar 31, 2011, 9:36 am) |
Hey everyone, good game. Nice thing I guess about having been out of this one for so long is that the bitterness of the stabs has passed, and I can look back on it from a fairly disconnected perspective. Others have already commented on the rise and fall of Aetolia. More on that later.
For me, the game largely hinged on a different theater. As Penner said in his EGS, he wanted me (Elia) to head north toward Aetolia... (I remember these talks) however my bigger threat was not going to come from Greg, rather, from the south. Scott, with his awesome solo record was the player to beat. So naturally I try to ally w him first and foremost. It wasn't working tho, cuz we had this newbie named Matt in between us. We couldn't figure out what to do among the three... the natural tendencies like for me to want Matt to go east and for Scott to want Matt to go north made us awkwardly incompatible.
This really set the game, and Scott certainly lived up to his record here by successfully campaigning, over and over, for Matt to go my way. Just when I'd think I'd established an "ok that's water under the bridge but let's work together now so we don't end up both screwed" level with Matt, bam, he turns on me again. And again. And... again. I really have to tip my hat to Scott for all this work he put into that angle of the game. All the promises to Matt about how he wouldn't stab him, how I was the bigger threat.
Then, Scott stabbed Matt, and so lethally done there was no way to save him. Tho I think we tried for a year, unsuccessfully.
Then the game progressed into the Aetolia years, when Greg was expanding. Here I was badly positioned between two large powers in the east and one larger in the west. Neither side really needed me, but I think Greg needed me more. This was cuz Penner and Scott could stalemate Greg w/o me in the picture, but Greg couldn't advance w/o me to help him round the southern tip. I had dreams of a 6-way draw by getting Greg to perhaps 19 of the 20 centers needed, and with me and Charles (Attica) right on the fulcrum, at which point Scott and Penner would have to work w us to stop the solo and all call it a draw.
This failed tho, when Charles gave in to Scott's (Penner's? Combined pressure?) jedi mind powers, and stabbed me.
Now back to the Aetolian regime, at one point here Greg stabbed me for a few centers, taking away my ability to build. I think this was the beginning of the fall of Aetolia. I'm not sure Greg knew just how firmly I was in his camp and willing to help him expand... and by sacking me, he stopped the momentum we had going and reduced me to a minimal survival role. This cost him (us) the ability to build on the peloponnesus. I would really liked to have seen where the game would have gone if this had not happened. Either we got the draw that I'd set out for, or a better-timed stab by Greg might have snuck him the solo. As it stood tho w me having to colllapse into Italy, it gave the lower left corner to the evil cronies, and then it was just a long slog of slowly retreating toward the furthest corner of the map I could find.
I'm glad the draw passed finally, and on this turn and not in a year. So thanks for passing that! The two victims - Matt and Greg - Matt, it's been so long since you were in the game. Looking back you were out in year 7, and we went almost 18 years. It's amazing that most of the meat of this game occurred around years 3-5 and then there was so much time afterwards. And Greg, you know I'm disappointed you didn't survive. Certainly not befitting. But, it happens. I barely lucked into survival myself.
Frank, a tireless effort as GM and marathon (heh) game. Nicely done...

DC 359 Game Over - untitled36 (Mar 31, 2011, 8:28 am) |
Hey all,
Well, the fat lady is singing, the cows have come home, and peace is celebrated throughout Europe. Good game, all. You were all the best kinds of players to have, cordial, punctual, and reliable (well, except for the Russian abandon...). I appreciate you all.
It was difficult not to comment on the game more than I did. I certainly tried to be careful in my press, and only point out things that were obvious to all. I hope I succeeded in that goal. But now that the game's over, I can share a couple thoughts. First, way back in the day I predicted (in my own mind) that Germany and Turkey would be the two powerhouses at games end. I still feel they were both very strong players, but they just got overwhelmed by the sheer number of troops France and England can muster.
Speaking of France and England, they formed an incredibly strong partnership. I think that's the power of alliances in Diplomacy. A tight knit pair of powers can almost always defeat any number of loosely allied, untrusting enemies. Still, I have to admit my suprise that England did not at some point stab France. Specifically in Fall 09. At that point, England could have easily claimed 4 french centers, with the rest of france essentially undefended, and quite possibly led to an English win. By that point of the game France and England were pretty solid, so I wondered if England was even considering a stab at that juncture.
Anyway, that's my EoG. I'd love to hear all of yours!
Housekeeping-wise, a few things.
1) I will NOT reveal draw votes, because it is against DC house rules, which I told you guys in the beginning that I was following for the blitz. I do encourage you guys to reveal them though.
2) The score, to the best of my knowledge, should be:
Austria - 2 points
England - 16 Points
France - 15.9 Points
Germany - 2 points
Italy - 4.5 points
Russia - 2 points
Turkey - 4.9 points
Hope that helps! Thanks for playing!

Hello Everyone
Thank You all for a well played game. Special thanks to John for GMing and doing such a good job of it.
Matt was right he was doing a very good job of playing England and myself against each other and after I made some mistakes in the first few rounds I was sure he or Turkey would get the solo.
The turning point for me was when Jerome defended Edinburgh when I had Liverpool for the taking. This showed me that he would defend England with great tenacity and forgive all other centres to do so. This would have worked in Germany favour who was already powerful. Jerome agreed to the logic of an alliance immediately after being attacked by me and the rest is history.
At no point did I ever fear being stabbed by England. I realized very early on that Jerome is a very trustworthy Allie and that we had a very good shot at moving far in this game. I expressed to Jerome when we first thought this game was coming to an end that it is rare to find two players that work together as we did. Because of the trust we had we were able to use our two armies as a single force with no fear of leaving centres undefended. John is right when he stated that this gave us a great advantage.
I would have no issues with playing with any of the players of this game again but fear that if Jerome and I ever end up on the same board again it would be unfair to the other players.
Just kidding, I'll take him out. My hat is off to Jerome, a new player who learnt a lot this game and I hope he continues to play.
Again thank you to all for a very enjoyable game and best of luck to all in the second round.
The Baron
Andy

DC 359 Game Over (Winter Blitz) jhack16 Mar 31, 12:17 pm |
Hi Guys,
A massive thank you to John for GM'ing this very long game with such
good humour, even when we tried his patience with all those rejected
draw offers...
This was probably the most unbalanced game I've played to date...
Russia's early NMR's and Jerome's helping me into a Russian centre
threw my early plans of working with Chris into disarray... I then got
caught in feeling bad about Austria, tried to help him, and then as
Germany wilted and England and France appeared to be at daggers drawn,
went for the big one against Italy. I was left working with a
diminished Matt who unfortunately had to NMR at a key moment, and the
result was a foregone conclusion.
So, a strategy that possibly would have yielded a better result, (I/T
alliance) was thrown away by me in a rush of blood to the head, and
you guys came up with the perfect strategy to overrun the G/T
defences.
The game's tone changed for me with my stab of Italy, as Chris seemed
to take it personally with some pretty direct comments about me and my
play. The change from delightful witty and incisive player to
something else was not an enjoyable experience for me.
Ande it was you wasnt it Chris who kept voting down the draws?
Apart from one occasion I voted in favor every time, so as Andy and
Jerome swept the board and did not look like stabbing one another,
that only left one person who could be voting against...
I admit I was tempted at the very last to vote No and see what
happened, but by that time I think the real fun had gone out of the
game for everyone and it wouldnt have been fair to John who never once
told us to get our act together and end the game. Also, in terms of
fairness I think Andy and Jerome have been a shining example of
sportsmanship.
Well played to all, and see you hopefully sometime in another game!
Good luck,
Joe

DC327 - Arcolia EOG - Viper (Mar 30, 2011, 8:49 pm) |
Oh man. I've been ready to write this for a while, so here goes:
Beginning of the game:
I had the whole thing figured out... I was going to ally with Attica and Messenia against Laconia to wipe him out quickly. Meanwhile, I was going to do my best to convince Elia and Boeotia to attack Aetolia. Clearly it didn't go as planned. Attica attacked Boeotia and Messenia attacked Elia and I was left almost alone against Laconia. So, I did my best to mend that relationship and turned against Attica.
Mid-game:
I quickly realized that the only way to attack Attica effectively was a massive convoy. But, with the too-quick growth of Aetolia, I couldn't afford to send one of my armies over there. So, I offered the job to Boeotia. Since he was down to his last unit, he took it. That left me able to
defend the main peninsula as well as I could. As Aetolia got close to the solo, conversations abounded about what it would take to get Attica on-board. So much of the discussion was about who was the actual person letting Aetolia win, and I was pretty sure it wasn't me, since I had never worked with him once. I don't remember the details, but I know the solution included another big convoy of Boeotia's unit back to the mainland.
Late-game:
Once the tide had turned, it was just a question of how far it would go. I trusted Laconia (though the line at the end made me nervous) and I think he trusted me. I was a little disappointed that Attica didn't devote himself more to the attack, but I suppose the early game gave him reason to suspect us. I'm happy with the result (it's my best result yet) and I look forward to playing you all again.

Hello Everyone,
I should have waited when I had more time to make the Aut 05 results mistake free. It's been one of those days:
Austria has 9 and 7 units=+2 only capable of building 1
England has 7 and 7 units= even
Germany has 3 and has 4= -1
Italy has 6 and 6 units= even
Russia has 8 and 8= even
I apologize about this rather embarassingly stupid error on my part; we had just sat down for dinner when I realized that I rushed myself into another Adjustment gaffaw. When the twins are in bed, I'll update the DC349 game game.

Another bright star in my constellation of successes.
Thought I was gonna have a go at a solo there for a couple of turns, but I guess it wasn't meant to be.

I am really not a stabber by nature, but won't waste time trying to overcome appearances
Seriously though I somehow managed to reach agreement with both Boeotia and Argos (whatever it's called) and then thought heck where do I go? Then Arcolia offers the alliance against Boeotia so ... the good Sarge was not happy, which was OK, but I didn't realize that the MVP deal was somehow contingent upon Boeotia. That leads me to think that perhaps they were planning to divvy me up in the long run anyway.
Then there is Laconia who had the arrangement with his neighbor and didn't really budge on it as he seemed singlarly focused on destroying Arcolia. That said and this relates to Mike's point about home centers there came the point when I was about to lose my last one, Athens, and Greg didn't view that as a problem, but I did. So Laconia is a persuasive guy and never stops which no doubt is a major factor in his success. Hence I cut the deal to switch sides again. That worked pretty well actually.
Finally Boeotia came back to his home and gained a center from me -- notice there was no attempt to take him out at then end. It seemed only just.

DC349 1st Strike Aut 05 results - Sean2010 (Mar 30, 2011, 4:40 pm) |
Hello Everyone,
I apologize for the delay getting the results out.
W05 orders due Saturday 4-2-11 by 11:59 PM EST
Italy:

Russian A War remains in War.

DC349 1st Strike Aut 05 results (dc349) Sean2010 Mar 30, 06:34 pm |
Hello Everyone,
I should have waited when I had more time to make the Aut 05 results mistake free. It's been one of those days:
Austria has 9 and 7 units=+2 only capable of building 1
England has 7 and 7 units= even
Germany has 3 and has 4= -1
Italy has 6 and 6 units= even
Russia has 8 and 8= even
I apologize about this rather embarassingly stupid error on my part; we had just sat down for dinner when I realized that I rushed myself into another Adjustment gaffaw. When the twins are in bed, I'll update the DC349 game game.
W04 due Saturday 3-2-11 by 11:59 PM EST.
