DC356 EOG statement Germany - dipWolf   (Mar 25, 2011, 12:05 am)
Hey everyone:
I don't know if I'm the first person to get my statement put together or
if everyone else didn't send me theirs but here we go turn by turn. In
brief.
1901 Spring: I established pretty good relations with most of the board.
Due to the format of emailing I probably didn't write as much as I
should or to everyone namely Turkey and Austria were a little left out
in the Germany press. England proposed an attack to crack the french
snail, while France and I seemed to be on amiable terms with a bounce in
Belgium arranged. I was fairly blunt with Russia about my views on
Sweden and the trade a wanted. England proceeded to make a considered
effort to talk me into bouncing Sweden.
Peace on all fronts and lots of cheerful neighbours.
Based on the attitude of the players and conversations I had the plan
was open fairly neutral then stage a F/G alliance against England.
Fall 01: So everything had gone swimmingly. England, Russia and France
all did what they had talk to me about. With Italy being the one shake
up with an expected move to Tyr. One that put me on edge. But Italy
sent me some nice reassuring press, about Tyr. It was nice but didn't
earn back much trust.
I was liking Russia a fair bit and both France and England had me on
edge. England had proved the more trustworthy and I favoured him over
France. 1902 attack on France planned by England, however he
orchestrates French support to Bel. Which makes me wonder at what
exactly the French intend. Suspecting a F/E alliance I cool to my
initial idea of siding with France.
A message from France confirms the suspicion after he broke our bounce
agreement in Bel, he was stabbing me and planned to go all out against
me. I hastily officially accept the English deal, and make up my mind to
go through with the attack on France. England pushes for an attack on
Sweden and we worked out a plan to force the snail from its shell taking
Pic and Bur in the spring. I actually warn France that England will stab
him. We agree on a build set lots of Armies for me and England stabs
France with a double fleet build.
I send press to France warning him in vague terms that England wasn't
being honest with either of us and had proposed to both sides an attack
plan. I didn't trust someone who liked those tactics and would have
preferred to work with France. However he was blunt about things and
told me that he was staying the course.
I stick with my deal with Russia things remain pleasant there.
Builds: Go as planned, I get to gloat to France who figures out that I'm
in on the act. Me and England begin our attack on France. France having
used up his last chance with me ends up in hot water as the
Pic/Iri/EC/Bur attack begins. Me and Russia discuss were I'm moving I
agree to move West in the spring to ease his concerns.
1902 Spring+Fall: Everything goes according to plan within France and
gains are being made rapidly position wise we hope to crack France in
the next two years. Austria CD's and I begin to fear rapid, R/T growth.
We discuss that if Russia attacks Norway which we plan to support that
the next year we will go for Sweden. So obviously my relationship with
Russia is starting to cool off.
I end up deciding against moving to Boh as originally planned after
Russia explains his intense dislike of the move.

1903 spring and fall: Russia is left with a diplomatic mess after
attacking England as me and England didn't attack him. Russia promises
to leave the north alone, and we leave on okay terms. However I end up
agreeing to attack Sweden. As England is rightfully mad at Russia. I do
however tell Russia how he could hold off the attack. He decides to
ignore my advice, and warns me that if I take Sweden He'll retreat to
Baltic and Gal will move north.
However my course is set. I've given what I can, in fact all I was
willing to give.
The net results I end up In Sweden, as I warned Russia. If only that
daft fool would listen to me, and I end up in Gascony. England lands in
Brest and things are going well for us across the board. We're hoping
that Italy/Austria can hold out long enough to give us time to get to
the Med.
Russia proposes an attack on England with me, and at the same time
proposes and attack on Me to England. This plan backfires when me and
England forward the messages to one another and have a good laugh.
Contact with England other then that had been pretty piddly but the two
of us tried to stay in touch. Neither of us wanted to stab at this point
but not talking wasn't helping much. We work out plans to try and help
Italy, and attack Russia in the North.
In the Fall It's obviously pretty clear were the board is laying
alliance wise two strong alliances clashing. I get into Mars and we have
effectively ended France. Couple more turns and he should be gone,
additionally me and England begin talking about a trade of Sweden for
Belgium. Something that ends up being discussed for much of the game.
1904 S+F: Post builds France has it Rough, me and England are set to
Press West, Builts leave me in good shape to deal with Russia, and
England is in a similar position. We are generally less then pleased
with Italy/Austria and how they aren't helping much. France is being
uncooperative in regards to Tyrr which we agree to leave him alive it if
puts it under our control. Me and England agree to a Risky push easy. As
we try and hit Russia hard and capture that side of the board. Austrian
negotiations begin and I convince Austria he's better off on my side in
terms of hunting for a survive as Ven is pretty easy to hold. Course
that didn't go as planned. Post everything Spring like. Munich is in
Serious danger. France is still be an irritant, but otherwise things are
going according to plan. France decides to not take my offer of a
surviving in exchange for helping me.
Another forwarded email from Russia about attacking me as we plan how to
set up our losses this turn so that me and England can reclaim as much
as we can in the fall.
1905: In a complete surprise we have France NMR, which means the only
loss in Munich which we are in good shape to retake. Plan here puts us
in a lovely position to reclaim Munich and Get all my units were we
need. The game is going quite well. But press from all sides has slowed
down a lot.
Of course we lost Italy which means a tough fight ahead in the med,
though we can take StP this year.
E/G agree to trade Bel and Mars.
All move go according to plan, we've got StP, Munich and we're heading
south as fast as we can.
We try and blast through the Med and see what can be done there. Really
at this point the game was pretty uneventful. My moves consisted mostly
of holding my position.
Fall Isn't much different still in good shape. But no real good path to
proceed. The draw is proposed. I jump on it as the game has started to
slow down a lot, and communicates between me and England were breaking
down. As he wanted to focus on other games and my new semester was
keeping me busier.
And that is how my last choice alliance ended up being the strong mid
game alliance it did.
I'd like to thank you all for an exciting game, and hope that perhaps we
play again sometime.
I look forward to seeing your perspectives on this game.
-Eric

I see what you mean here. I've done it in the past, and in my early games I thought I was being clever by doctoring or even faking entire emails from other players - this was on some of the USAK/other name stlye judges where you were unlikely to play the same people again and thus gain a reputation.

I stopped forwarding messages when I realised that if I forwarded something to someone, they would more than likely assume I was doing the same with their mails. I think that was in my first game on this site. Since then I've been clean. Clearly you are going to pass on information occasionally, but being trustworthy with information is a much better reputation to have than the opposite.

My take on forward emails is this: I don't do it but as far as I am concerned when it comes to diplomacy between players all is fair in love and war. I try not deal with players that letter pass but I don't think you can write anyone out of the hobby over it.

The only thing I consider cheating is having to do more with the GM or the results rather than among the players.l

dc382 - Game start - z93blom   (Mar 24, 2011, 3:19 pm)
Diplomats,

I hear concerns that some people are not responding.

First off - know that that can be a valid tactic in and of itself. Perhaps not the most successful tactic, but a valid one.

Secondly - the Winter Blitz waits for noone. The adjudications are planned to run parallel for all the games - on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday. If you have not sent in orders for that turn by the time they are due, you are awarded an NMR. There will be no chasing around, asking for people to submit orders.

Also, something that I forgot to tell you all about:

Remember, that since we are keeping a tight schedule for the Winter Blitz - if for some reason I do not adjudicate on time there are backup GM:s ready to take my place. They will also not go around asking for orders. Instead they will get their orders from the common orders(at)diplomaticcorp.com mailbox. Be sure to send a copy of all orders there as well as to me.

Next turn: Spring 1901 Movement.

Next Deadline: Monday 28th of March 2011, 18:00 GMT (6PM).

*Syria Given Suspicious Giant Wooden Horse*
*Italy Gains First Build Since '03*

*Turkey Down, But Not Out*

Hey all,

What a year, eh? Italian armies in Syria and Trieste, French in Vienna and Ukraine, and England.... well, England pretty much just sits there. Smile

The Draw fails (again), but is reproposed (again). Someone must really want this game to end, and someone else must really want it to continue! So we'll make the vote due with the builds. Speaking of builds, Turkey actually remains even unit-wise, though he has two less centers than last year. France and Italy both gain one.

Oh, and there was one retreat. Trieste had to retreat to Serbia or OTB. I assumed serbia, but Turkey can retreat otb and gain a build if he desires.

How's round two going for you guys?

Oh, and by the way.... for those that recall there was a draw on the table for this turn. It failed.

I did not receive

Did anyone else

Now on to Winter, which I will make due on Friday, March 25

You meant retreat? Yes, that would change things if noone else got it. I always send them to myself as well, and I did get it. It also went to the dc347 thread on the DC site.

Did anyone else not get the fall adj? Mike have you had any trouble like this before?

dc358 game over! - JeffreyK   (Mar 23, 2011, 9:50 pm)
Thanks for an interesting game everyone!  And, extra thanks to our GM - Cory was incredibly patient with the constant voting!

I'll admit that this was a strange game all around - from a missing England to partially missing Russia and France to rapidly shifting landscape of alliances, rarely did a few years go by where the game completely changed where I thought it was going!

Thanks

Hi Mike,

Thanks for the lengthy post-game report.

To say for the 1,000th time to you, I was moving intending to work with and support you until you *stopped communicating*. I know you (angrily) told me after the fact you had RL issues getting in the way but you are conflating the result and my intent.

Well folks, it's been fun.  The level of intensity in this game was great... unfortunately I seem to have reached the end of my ride.  Sometimes you have those games where you just bet on the wrong allies, and this was certainly one of those games.  A lot hinged on Joe... he said early on that he didn't think A/I could coexist, and that challenged me to want to figure out ways to make an otherwise improbable alliance - work.  What I should have read tho from his words tho was not "I don't think the alliance will work"... rather... "I intend to stab you, over and over and over again, promise again to work w you, and stab yet more."  But something got lost in the translation.  Maybe it was the Irish accent.

The game actually started to break down earlier tho... when my secret allies of John and Dirk who were collectively running the board at one time stopped looking at the team and gave in to the temptation of greed (and per Dirk, perhaps some inexperience).  It's good to have allies, but always have to remember even your allies are still your enemy, as they will always look to themselves first.  This was no exception.  Dirk was quick to seal my fate by promising to help me survive, while moving units blatantly in my direction for the "so-obviously-coming-I-can't-believe-he's-telling-me-he's-not-going-to-take-it" stab.  He took it, and I was out.  I had no choice but to fall back, maybe survive in Spain or Africa, but Dirk made that impossible by not helping me into Madrid or keeping Joe out of Morocco.  I think we'll look back on this as a game-altering move, as Eire got nothing out of my death.  The Italian spoils went to Joe and Adam, and now the pass at Gibraltar is locked up.  Had Dirk entered the Med and established position, there might have been solo possibilities for him.

Kevin you never kept good on your promise to return the favor for me working so hard to keep you in the game when you were near eliminated in 01!

Not to blame my loss on anyone else, I made some severe mistakes in this game, most notably my own fatal flaw reared its head again, in that I like grand alliances.  I tend to be an alliancey player, and such has little place in this game especially against veterans.  Then mid-game I was severely pulled away from the game, tho the Sicilian decline had begun by this point.  I think it began when John flip-flopped twice in a row regarding whose side he was on in the south - stabbing Byz, pulling off, and stabbing him again.  That double stab permanently broke any possibility of a Sic-Ukr-Byz team, and pulled Kevin's focus off the south - leaving Joe free to focus 100% on me.

It has honestly been a long time since I played a game against some serious competition.  I've gotten so involved in running things at dc that I really stopped playing, and I think my Dip was very rusty for this game.  You all deserved better from me, which I'll have to provide sometime in the future...

I look forward to seeing where it goes from here... it looks like y'all have quite a game ahead of you still with many turns yet to come...

All,

Sorry for the short delay. I was waiting for one set up to the deadline (or I would have had the thing already done and waiting to hit send if no late orders came in). As it turned out, by the time I got that I was already on a plane and I got home late. Thus the lack of adjudication until today.

That said, we had another interesting season! It is with sorrow that we bid farewell to our second casualty - Mike Sims as Sicily. Moment of silence...

And still other interesting things happen - Ukraine loses another center, Burgundy's line becomes thinner, and - ho hum - Eire continues to grow.

We had NO retreats so let's move to Winter. Adjustments are as follows:

Minor error at the bottom of this message.  The Deadline is 24:00 hours on Monday 28; but, that is equivalent to 8 pm on Monday (US EDT), not the 6:00 pm listed.  It is equivalent to 6 pm on Monday where I am (US MDT).  Hope I didn't cause too much confusion with that one.

If you need help figuring out what the equivalent time for 24:00 (GMT) is at your Time Zone please drop me a line and I will provide any assistance that I can.

You are all have already been told this throughout Round 1; however, I will repeat this one item because it is really important.  Get in the habit of including orders(at)diplomaticcorp.com  in the "cc" of all your orders.  If for some reason I fail to provide an adjudication, this will allow the moderators to step in.  If they do step in and you did not "cc" your orders to orders(at)diplomaticcorp.com, you will receive an NMR for the season.  No second chances, no excuses received . . . you have been warned (multiple times, I am sure).

A few other things I would recommend; First, use "Preliminary" orders.  Decide on a set of orders early and send me something . . . anything, just so long as you do not get caught by the deadline.  You are welcome to send in as many sets of orders you like.  I will always use the last set received.  Second, always send a complete set of orders.  Even if you have 13 units and you are only making one change, send the full set of orders (it is simple to cut and paste).  You are welcome to bold, italic and/or highlight the change if you like; but always send a complete set.  This will keep the confusion to a minimum.  Next, please put "DC377", your Country, and the current season in the subject line of your emails (i.e. DC377, Austrian Orders, Spring 1901).  This will help me find your orders efficiently.  The last thing is to have fun.  Remember, this is a game.  No one is going to die because your neighbor stabbed you before you could stab him, or because he NMR'd and left you holding the bag.  No need to be hostile; just have fun.  This will allow everyone to have fun . . . including the guy that might be your neighbor in the next game.

Remember, this is a fast paced Tournament; a full game year every week.  On the other hand everyone is dealing with the same issue; time is short.  Do the best you can with the time you have.  If your neighbor is not responding as quickly as you would like . . . well, he probably isn't responding to his other neighbors that well either.  Course, there are other possibilities too . . . after all, this is Diplomacy.

Welcome . . . good luck, and let the lies begin.  Spring 1901 Deadline; 24:00 hrs (GMT), Monday 28, 2011 = 6 PM (US EDT), Monday 28, 2011.

Your friendly, neighborhood GM.

Wow - There's tons of action this round, particularly at sea!  Convoys are the preferred mode of transportation as both the Rogues and Wizards put them to good use... while huge naval battles are fought over the High Seas and Mirianic Ocean.  Every power puts forth their best effort but after all is said and done the High Seas and most central water zones remain clear!  The Dwarves esacpe this year with no likely losses, but not as much can be said for the Barbarians with Knights, Faeries, and Gnomes all floating around their homeland.  In the south battles continue to rage between the Elves and Ogres, as a 3:3 standoff occurs in the Anhondo Plain.

3 units dislodged!

Pirate F Kahvi can retreat to Abby Normal.
Gnome F GRIEF REEF can retreat to Abby Normal or Newa River.
Ogre F THREE RIVER LAKE can retreat to Marshes of Morva or Lankhmar.

Silly comparison? Not really. Now the expression "kind of pregnant" is silly, but I didn't make it up. However, nothing wrong with the analogy. One cannot be "kind of pregnant" -- one is or one isn't. In Diplomacy, something cannot be "almost illegal" -- either you can do it without breaking rules, or you cannot do it without breaking rules. For all the strong feelings against message-passing, have never seen a game in which it was illegal.

We have no community rule on this, not even a "best practices" sort of thing... So as far as any dc game goes, it's perfectly legal.

However, GMs can write their own house rules on the matter. I do know of one GM that does so and prohibits the forwarding of mail.

Like you say here tho, (and like most tactics) it is best used when it's not expected. So building a reputation for such is terrible... but if you have a situation where you can do something creative w a forwarded, quoted, or doctored mail, and you think it will be received well or accomplish your goal, then by all means...

I think comparing "almost illegal" to "almost pregnant" is a little silly. Nevertheless, some players consider it near heresy. I do it rarely, but I'll do it in particularly dire circumstances. I've even been known to falsify e-mails from "others" to make my point. Anything for the game, you know.

Some players oppose the tactic so much they don't care what the e-mail says, they will immediately go after you for being so disreputable. I had one player call me "insulting to the hobby," which seemed a bit harsh. So there are risks, but that's always true. The tactic, however, is not (and really cannot be) forbidden.

I'll add if people forward me an e-mail from someone else, I generally disapprove. Not because I'm a hypocrite, but because it isn't for something ridiculous enough. It is, for me, a last ditch effort. Forwarding e-mails to prove a 1901 FE alliance seems a little unnecessary, and while I won't insult the player or throw my forces haphazarly against them for revenge, I will doubt their cunning and probably consider them easy meat for the rest of the game.
