DC 341: Update - dorkknob   (Dec 22, 2010, 4:30 pm)
I apologize folks.  I am not bailing out, Christmas rush is horrendous when work is busy as well.  But its not like I have a lot to order.  So apologizes all around.

So that everybody knows, we are missing orders from England.  Hopefully we'll get those soon, but as I am about to have Christmas with my family, there probably won't be an adjudication until next week.

Wow... a 'shout-out' slam before the game even starts!  That's a first for me.  I feel .... honored???

       Hi all,
I'm Mike Hoffman.  I've been playing Dip for roughly 30 years, but at this stage, who counts anymore.  Started out FtF, then to mail, then to the Judges when the Internet was finally built. Smile

Some have said I play with a split-personality, but I'm on good drugs now, so hopefully the voices in my head will stay quiet (PARTY TIME!!!!  WOO HOO!!!!)

I am in now way anywhere nearly as devious and conniving as Garry paints me.  (HA!)  I am a truly loyal ally (To
Yourself!)  who rarely, if ever, stabs anyone (Rarely ... in reference to maybe geologic time!).

I hold no pre-conceived notions about players or the races represented in this map (Dwarves Smell!), and I've played in all 3 games so far.  By far, my favorite map to play.  So many twists and turns, alliances are so important (and variable), and the secrets of the board reveal themselves as you play (Like I'm going to divulge any to you guys now. Good Luck!).

Looking forward to seeing how the new rules will change the game play.  I can assure you one thing:  I will not be playing Ogres again --- unless Sims has it out for me. Smile

Consider me officially on the intro bandwagon.

Nathan Deily - first introduced to Diplomacy about 15 years ago in high school. Quite a lot of ftf and even light variant play at that time, and then got into pbem in college on CAT-23 and other places.

I was very excited to join Diplomaticcorp a few years ago and have played there fairly actively (in
addition to some other new groups I have had the pleasure of being exposed to), very often because it affords the opportunity to try new variants and stretch my brain in new ways I can bring back to Classic.

I agreed to take over an ailing Hobbit position in the "Slaughter at Story Time" run of Haven and was rewarded with a long, slow, painful death in that game. Suffice it to say I'm looking to try my hand in a different corner of the board this time (or at least make my own bed before I have to lie in it).

Winter Blitz is the only tournament I've ever had the pleasure of playing in (2nd time in a row this past year, and very excited for my third run at it). Managed to get a 2-way draw in the first round but then got shellacked in the 2nd round... hope to see you all there as well.

One question for Mike - I gather this is not the "Fog of War" version of Haven, but just in case it is... can you confirm? That does have several important implicaitons. I seem to remember that "Slaughter" wasn't.

               Nathan

Somehow that doesn't seem too common a request - but in this game you never know!  Here is our final 19.  Since we have a little time to kill, we can sit here and twiddle our thumbs, or we can bake some Haven Holiday treats, or we can turn in
some preferences!

So I'm going to go w option 3.  I don't in most games, but in this one so many have already voiced an opinion on what they'd like to play that I'll open it up to prefs.  Each player should (ok, must - but I just hate laying down the law like that!) turn in a set of prefs, even if your preference is "I'd rather leave my future civilization which I will henceforth lead from infancy to world domination in the hands of the fates"... you should still turn something in.

If you would like your preferences to be more particular than that, you should turn in a list of at least 5.  You can use the first letter of the civ name, each one starts with something different... like A E I O U... if your pref is to play the Archers, Elves, Ogres, Undead... or if you just have a liking for vowels.  Note that would
only be 4, not 5, since I is invalid, and I'd have to write you back a nasty letter requesting you pick a 5th one, thereby expanding your horizons beyond those of just vowels.

There's a lot of eager energy here, do you want me to assign powers and send out the player list pre-Christmas?  I can do that if y'all want.  First deadline still wouldn't be till Jan.  I would only do this if everyone confirms they're ok w this and wouldn't be put out or left behind.

Note - some of you I know well, others are completely new.  So intros are welcome too!  Feel free to copy the group.  Heck it'll pass the time.  Like you know what I do in my spare time?  I build w LEGOs.  No - really.  Some pretty big scale stuff.

               Enjoy!

I apologize in advance. My dealings with several of you will be by needs brief given that we will unlikely have anything to discuss early on if we are not in the same hemisphere. It doesn't mean that I wouldn't LOVE having you as a mid-game ally if I can survive Mike Hoffman that long.

Consider me officially on the intro bandwagon.

Nathan Deily - first introduced to Diplomacy about 15 years ago in high school. Quite a lot of ftf and even light variant play at that time, and then got into pbem in college on CAT-23 and other places.

I was very excited to join Diplomaticcorp a few years ago and have played there fairly actively (in addition to some other new groups I have had the pleasure of being exposed to), very often because it affords the opportunity to try new variants and stretch my brain in new ways I can bring back to Classic.

Somehow that doesn't seem too common a request - but in this game you never know!  Here is our final 19.  Since we have a little time to kill, we can sit here and twiddle our thumbs, or we can bake some Haven Holiday treats, or we can turn in some preferences!

Note that would only be 4, not 5, since I is invalid, and I'd have to write you back a nasty letter requesting you pick a 5th one, thereby expanding your horizons beyond those of just vowels.

Enjoy!

-mike

Hey there. I'm Dan and I'm new to Diplomaticcorp, as this is my first game on the site (as well as my first variant game). I have experience both in face-to-face Diplomacy and online play with AI for a judge, so this is a first for me in more than one way. I enjoy RTS games, chess, geography, and history, so DIplomacy was a natural fit for me.

On a side note, should we submit our preferences in public? Or privately?

Subject: When I grow up I want to be... a Troll?

Somehow that doesn't seem too common a request - but in this game you never know!  Here is our final 19.  Since we have a little time to kill, we can sit here and twiddle our thumbs, or we can bake some Haven Holiday treats, or we can turn in some preferences!

Note that would only be 4, not 5, since I is invalid, and I'd have to write you back a nasty letter requesting you pick a 5th one, thereby expanding your horizons beyond those of just vowels.

Enjoy!

DC354: Can the Elven King of Old Return? It WAS Foretold... (dc354) initdoby5 Dec 21, 10:32 pm

Speaking of tyranny you pointy-eared, prancing rat (expletive deleted)! If I ever get the chance to catch you in a dark alley, stoned on fairy dust, with your back turned, with at least four of my mates, armed with broken bottles and bar stools, I too will enjoy a little revenge. And then toast your demise over a pint or two or three. To the pub!

Halloo to all and well met. I know several of you (and have had the pleasure of being stabbed by you) and others I am just prepping to get used by. I have had the pleasure of several things:

1. Playing in WB before

2. Helping run WB before (as I will be again)

3. Playing on the site for a while

4. Racking up an impressive list of eliminations

5. GMing a Haven game before

6. Playing a Haven game before....

which brings us to the Elven King. It was foretold that the Elven King sailed away to Middle-Earth (escaping Ogre tyranny in Haven) and would someday return to take his vengeance. Mayhap now is that time? (I was the ill-fated, much hated, under-rated Elves in DC224).

Wow... a 'shout-out' slam before the game even starts!

(HA!)  I am a truly loyal ally (To Yourself!)  who rarely, if ever, stabs anyone (Rarely ... in reference to maybe geologic time!).

Smile

If you would like your preferences to be more particular than that, you should turn in a list of at least 5.  You can use the first letter of the civ name, each one starts with something different... like A E I O U... if your pref is to play the Archers, Elves, Ogres, Undead... or if you just have a liking for vowels.  Note that would only be 4, not 5, since I is invalid, and I'd have to write you back a nasty letter requesting you pick a 5th one, thereby expanding your horizons beyond those of just vowels.

Enjoy!

Nope, the world is a normal globe, drawn as a flat map cut vertically and unwrapped, just like every other worldly map we look at.  So just like you cannot walk from the north pole of earth to the south pole, so too in the Haven world can you not make that connection.  Future map, I make make on a toroid instead of a sphere, thereby allowing the dual wrap.  Whenever I get around to that.

Wow... a 'shout-out' slam before the game even starts!

(HA!)  I am a truly loyal ally (To Yourself!)  who rarely, if ever, stabs anyone (Rarely ... in reference to maybe geologic time!).

I was very excited to join Diplomaticcorp a few years ago and have played there fairly actively (in addition to some other new groups I have had the pleasure of being exposed to), very often because it affords the opportunity to try new variants and stretch my brain in new ways I can bring back to Classic.

All,

Sorry for the delay to today. I thought I was going to get to this later last night and I had some stuff come up. Sigh. Oh well. We are back now with quite an exciting turn. Lots of interesting movement and lots of twists but little change in the end. We only have one retreat:

Ukraine F Geo can only retreat to Cir or OTB. I retreated it automatically to Cir. John can go OTB and rebuild if desired.

With that auto-retreat, we are straight to Winter. Given the delay by your GM, let's set Winter further back than I originally anticipated. Let's go with a Winter turn of the 30th at 6pm CST and have Spring 1906 be Jan 6th at 6pm CST

Winter adjustments are as follows:

Burgundy Build 1

Israel Build 1

Poland Remove 2

Ukraine Build 1 IF AND ONLY IF F from Geo retreats OTB

Byzantium Build 1

Merry Christmas from the March.

Hey DipWolf,

You just send press directly to the other players. And you just send your orders in to the GM, similar to what you put in your posting. The only other difference I can think of in PBEM Dip is it is much slower. The fastest games at DC play one year per week, whereas a typical game will play one major and minor season per week.

Enjoy!

Hi folks,

Here is the winter turn. I got orders from everyone, but Russia did not specify a coast for his build, so he will waive his for this year. Get in the habit of specifying coasts people... if you do it even when it doesn't matter you will be less likely to forget when it does.

Here are the other adjustments:

France:
Remove F North Africa
Remove A Spain
Remove A Burgundy

Russia:
Build waived

Turkey:
Build A Constantinople
Build A Smyrna

So we are on to spring now. I don't think I will take a break for the holidays, but I will make the next deadline a week from now. In the new year I will try again to speed things up a bit. Spring 1908 is due in one week, Tuesday December 28, 2010, 17:00 MST.

Maps are attached. Have fun, and have a great holiday season everyone.

Help me Understand PBEM - dipWolf   (Dec 21, 2010, 12:37 pm)
So I've just signed up for an account here and I have a number of questions about how things work in this community.

If it's relevant the experience I've had is with:
F2F
PhPdiplomacy
Playdiplomacy

I'm wondering how a number of things work with PBEM.

How exactly does press work on that site? Do you just send emails to other in your game or, do you send them to the GM to be sent to the other players according to your instructions? Is there a typical format for giving instructions for how it is posted?

For entering orders is it done though an order submission field? Or do you send your orders into the GM though email? Is there a set syntax to sending in orders besides the one for how the orders look

> F Spn move to MAO < (Or would something like that not fly here?)

Are there any other specifics I should know about PBEM that make it different then automatic adjudication and F2F?

Thanks for you time. I apologize if this is already posted somewhere I couldn't find anything about it.

Enjoy!
