(DC 324) A Stab in the Dark - Spring 1911 Results - Corrino   (Jul 16, 2010, 8:21 pm)
Hi Stabbers,

Now THAT'S what I'm talking about!  England and Turkey go toe-to-toe across half the board.  Based on SC captured that we can see, Turkey is up two and down one.  Barring any unseen turnovers that's all the Sultan needs.  Of course, he has to hold them all for one more turn.  Can he do it?  Or will England find a way to bar the Turk at the very threshold of victory?  Tune in Tuesday night and find out!

RETREATS NEEDED:  Italian army Rome.  Turkish army Munich.  English fleet Berlin.  You have 24 hours.  The sooner the better.  Summer reports will be sent out to all once I have all the retreats.

Cheers,
Chris

Hi again all -

Please see the RP files, DPY, and map attached.

Thanks!

Well folks, I regret to inform you that we've had an abandonment.  Jean-Luc, our Chosokabe player, has asked to resign from the game, primarily (I think) due to technical issues he experienced with RP.  I am very sad to see him depart this game, as he made many contributions to this game and the variant as a whole.  I have posted the vacancy on the DC page and called for a replacement.  I will post a new deadline after we find our new player.

Sorry for the inconvenience -

dc330: Sp38 Results! - dknemeyer   (Jul 15, 2010, 7:01 pm)
As winter thaws into spring many interesting things happened around the world, outside of the horrendous warfare sweeping Europe and its surrounding areas:
- On January 22 a little play called "Our Town" was staged in Princeton, New Jersey. Some people are saying it might end up being popular.
- In more popular culture press, on February 4 a "cell-animated feature", Snow White, is released in the United States.
- On May 5 the Vatican recognizes Franco's government in Spain; curious, as Franco and his army have virtually abandoned Spain itself
- Amidst the mobilization in Italy, Laszlo Biro patents a new invention, the ballpoint ben, on June 15
- While no World Cup was staged in 1938 thanks to the war, statistical experts ran a rudimentary simulation and determine that Italy would have defeated Hungary in the finals by a 4-2 mark
- Also in the world of sports, American boxer Joe Louis avenged his earlier loss to German Max Schmeling via a spectacular first round knockout at Yankee Stadium in New York City
- Finally, in Asia, Japan has continued to advance in China but there have been a lack of noteworthy engagements. However, in June, Chinese forces flooded the Yellow River to stall the Japanese advance. The Chinese people, aware of oppressive Japanese rule in conquered territories, hope this can be the beginning of turning the tide.
There is one Italian retreat (all neutral units are disbanded). Upcoming deadlines are at the end of this note.

Now, for some player press:

***
Italian Press:
El Duce stood impassively as generals and various other flunkeys - that is how he thought of his subordinates - fluttered around the grand map of Europe laid out in marble, silver and gold on the floor below. Various elaborately carved pieces were being moved expressly as he, the Supreme Commander, had commanded. And the results of these movements would soon be known, written in fire and blood. Someone coughed behind him.

'Excellency, the German ambassador wishes to speak with you about the situation in Croatia, and the French are requesting a response to their peace proposal.'

Mussolini turned, his face showing his displeasure. He drew his pistol and aimed it at the unfortunate messenger's chest. The fellow turned white, and raised his hands in supplication. A shot rang out, and he slumped to the ground. The ruler of Italy stepped back, not wishing for icor to stain his fine leather boots. He waved those below to continue.

'Foolish fellow,' he thought. 'His own fault. They have all been warned never to interrupt me in the middle of a Diplomacy game.'***
Turkish Press:
Our leader, Ataturk, has heard the moans of the Persian people and has offered assistance to them out of solidarity with their plight. The good people of Iraq have extended their hand of brotherly support in hopes that Iraq and Iran can forever be at peace with one another. The Turkish republic stands for all downtrodden peoples and hopes to extend that generosity to other parts of the world and we challenge our "Western" friends to do the same for its subjugated and enslaved masses. As the weather warms in Anatolia, so too should the relations between us and the other powers.***Observer Press (strongly seconded by the GM!):

(DC 326) Gumball - Fall 1905 Results - Corrino   (Jul 15, 2010, 6:56 pm)
Hi Players,

I regret to say that we have our first NMR of the game, as even an extra 24 hours were insufficient for our England to submit orders.

Highlights of the season, OR "How the English NMR Affected Everyone"

. England NOT attacking MAO allows France to defend Spain from Italy and his (surprise?) friend, Russia.

. England NOT attacking Moscow deprives Russia of a much-needed bounce and a missed opportunity to regain Sevastopol.  A lucky break for the Turks, though, who manage to keep themselves on 3 SC and 3 units, a much stronger defensive position.

. Don't think the English will be receiving any love letters from the Austo-Italian axis.  Good fortune for France and Turkey is not received so warmly in Vienna and Rome.

. Germany,
well, they might be the exception to this rule.  I can't quite see where the NMR affected Germany that much since he was pretty impervious to anything England had to offer.  The Germans pick up another SC in Scandinavia without breaking a sweat.

Check out all the details below, and let me know ASAP if you spot a mistake.

RETREATS:  None required.

ADJUSTMENTS:  See chart following the orders.  Given that we're a day late, let's make these due by Saturday morning.  That's July 17 at 8:00 a.m. Eastern US time (12 noon GMT).

IMPORTANT NOTE:  The English player needs to reestablish contact with me ASAP.  If no adjustment is submitted, I will use the standard rules to choose which unit will be disbanded.  If he missing the adjustments, and has not contacted me by MONDAY, I will seek a replacement.

Cheers,
Chris

1648 091010: Fall 1661 Moves - txurce   (Jul 15, 2010, 4:53 pm)
Hi Charles,
Thanks for your scheduling update.  I like knowing if an adjudication is going to be late, and when I can expect it.  If you're on vacation and would rather put Dip aside for two weeks, I'm happy to wait on your return for winter.

Jorge
2010/7/15 Charles Féaux de la Croix <charlesf(at)web.de>

Hallo zusammen,

the race for victory is well on! Both Turkey and Poland have vaulted up to
19 SCs, probably confounding expectations of a solo this fall since they're both
in equal measure past the 18 SC threshold. It will be left to the next year to
break this parity.

An FPT three-way draw proposal has been submitted for you to vote
on.

Sorry for having kept you waiting for the adjucation. As for the next
deadline, as I am off to Greece for a much needed holiday, I'm lengthening the
winter deadline to Wednesday 21 July. I'll be returning late July and will
only be able to handle one deadline during that time. Dearly need to
recharge my much-depleted Diplo-batteries.

Charles

DC319: Fall 1941 Moves (CORRECTED) - charlesf   (Jul 15, 2010, 4:39 pm)
I'm afraid I misadjucated the Fall season in
respect to Italy's orders. Mea culpa. I've corrected the below as necessary.
Hopefully now everything is in order.

There's also a piece of observer press that has
come in since and you shall find it below. I shall heed that call
myself.

---

Hallo zusammen,

historically, 1941 was all about sweeping manoeuvre warfare. Less so in our
alternate history, as SCs have remained in the same players' hands. Perhaps
quiet before the storm...?

I'm afraid I remain pinched for time in these weeks. Fortunately I have a
ten-day holiday in Greece coming up and shall be leaving early tomorrow.

The Winter 1941 Retreats/Adjustments are
scheduled for Wednesday, 22 July, since I'm scheduling the Spring '42
Moves for the 28th owing to my travels. Not sure when I shall be able to
adjucate the winter orders. Possibly tonight, if orders are swift in coming
without any provisos, possibly at a later date.

Liebe Grüsse,

Charles

dc330: Fa38 Results: later tonight - dknemeyer   (Jul 15, 2010, 4:23 pm)
Hi Everyone,
Just writing to let you know I won't be getting to the adjudication
until a little later. I expect it to be posted well before I go to
bed. Orders are locked with what has been sent so far as no one
requested the six hour delay.
Also, I have another vacation request to accommodate. While I hate to
have such a large gap in the game I do accommodate vacations that let
me know in advance. Thus our Winter 1938 adjudication deadline will be
on ***Thursday July 29***, resuming our regular schedule thereafter.
In the event I get orders from everyone in advance I will adjudicate
immediately.
This season's results coming in a bit!
Dirk

1648 091010: Fall 1661 Moves - charlesf   (Jul 15, 2010, 4:09 pm)

Charles

Thanks for your scheduling update.  I like knowing if an adjudication is going to be late, and when I can expect it.  If you're on vacation and would rather put Dip aside for two weeks, I'm happy to wait on your return for winter.

Mike, Christine, Dan, Hamish, Dirk,
As I told Mike Thursday morning, real life has reared its ugly head,
now more than even I expected yesterday. As such I simply will not
have time for this game. As all of you know it bothers me to end a
game by any vote other than DIAS, and I only support DIAS when everyone
simply has lost the weill to keep playing due to NMRs or such. That is
definitely not the case in this excellent contest. I like to play
games until their logical conclusion (either a forced draw or a solo),
and there is still a LOT, a very lot, of play left in this game.
Either a German solo or a forced three way AEG are the most likely
results if it was to be plasyede out. Unfortunastely, I simply nop
longer will have any time to devote to plsaying it out. All three
other players for some time now have said--repeatedly--that they want a
three way AEG by vote. I have been the (apparently lone) naysayer
since I'd really like to play this out, even though it is very unlikely
I could get any better result. And I hate to have Mike's tourney end
this way, especially since Dirk apparenly has a shot ast winning the
whole thing. But I have no choice. So I'm now acceptinmg the AEG that
I've been berated to vote for if it currently is on the table. If it
is not, then I propose the AEG three way myself and vote for it. Its
been a good game guys, I hope to meet all of you in the future. I've
had fun. I hope you have. And I'm sorry to have to scuttle off this
way.

Hi Ray,
I hope the real-life demands for your attention are not particularly
bad, sad or painful.
I will indeed vote for the 3-way as advertised. Barring something
unusual and bizarre - or this being your biggest manipulation yet! -
it appears we've finished this out.
I agree this has been an excellent game but, insofar as my tournament
result goes, I can honestly say I wish I had been put in with some
softer touches.

Subject: dc311 - The winter that never was

With Fall 17 results we have ourselves another draw that
fails to pass and a winter that may never be!

Is
it global warming, or just crafty Diplomacy...

We
do have two retreats, but Austrian A Bud can only go to Tri and German A Tyr
can only go to Boh.  After enacting both of these retreats, there's simply
nothing left to do this winter.  If either power wishes to go OTB and
build something else instead, you may do so by tomorrow 3pm Central, but if the
status quo is fine then we just move along to Spring 18... Due Monday!
3pm Central.

1648 091010: Summer 1661 Retreats - hmtucaz   (Jul 15, 2010, 1:34 pm)
I notice that Winter Retreats/Adjustments were due yesterday.  Not having received results of the Fall moves, I have failed to submit retreats/adjustments.

I will simply take this to mean that either I have been eliminated, or I have been dropped from the game for not submitting timely orders.

It was fun playing with you all.

Enjoy the rest.

Harvey

Hallo zusammen,

my apologies for only now publishing the summer
adjucation. I'm afraid I had written down the wrong date in my calendar -
believing Wednesday was D-Day. I hope this two-day delay hasn't been too
much of an inconvenience and I hope you forgive me this lapse in my GMing
attentiveness.

The Fall Moves shall be on Monday next week.

dc325 Imterra - A04 Results: An Unplanned Scenario - garry.bledsoe   (Jul 15, 2010, 12:46 pm)
Completely my fault and I am late to boot.
I failed to mention that Germany would have a build available if they retreated OTB. That has in fact happened. Thus we will have a Autumn turn here with the results from the retreats:
A Gal retreats OTBA StP retreats to Moscow
As such, we now need a Russian disband and an English and German build. Please submit those by Saturday if possible (but I will not adjudicate until after the weekend if those are not received because of MY mistake).
I have English and Russian orders already. If Tim and Sean could confirm that those still stand and are FINAL that would be great. Sorry for the oversight. I should have caught that a German OTB would yield a build.

All,Sorry for the slight delay. We have two retreats needed:
A StP can retreat to Lvn, Mos or OTB.A Gal can retreat to Ukr or OTB.
We will only have two adjustments. It will be a build for England and a removal for Russia (unless StP retreats OTB). Since it is HIGHLY unlikely that the English build is contingent on the Russian or German retreat, let's do an retreat and adjustment phase simultaneously. Let's have those due Tuesday the 13th at 6pm CST.

(DC 324) A Stab in the Dark - Autumn 1910 Results - Corrino   (Jul 15, 2010, 11:15 am)
Players,

My apologies.  Write this down as an NMR for the GM.

I was focused on my other game last night -- never did get the last set of orders -- and completely forgot that you guys were waiting for Autumn reports.  The fact that E and T both submitted their Winter/Spring orders without waiting also threw me off, I think. Smile

Anyway, here is the Autumn stuff.  I'm at work, so I'm doing this FROM MEMORY.  Be extra careful to review what I've said.  I'll update the game page later from home.  I will follow up shortly with the individual reports... ALSO FROM MEMORY.

Now that I've got the sorrying and excusing out of the way... Where the heck are we?

Answer:  We're one small dot from a Turkish victory, that's where we are!

The Sultan snagged his 16th and 17th SC this turn.  Is number 18 inevitable, or can England and friends (ha!) find a way to stop his seemingly inexorable progress?

Time -- a very short time, perhaps -- will tell.

Cheers,
Chris

DC319: Fall 1941 Moves - charlesf   (Jul 15, 2010, 9:41 am)

Charles

Well folks, I regret to inform you that we've had an abandonment.  Jean-Luc, our Chosokabe player, has asked to resign from the game, primarily (I think) due to technical issues he experienced with RP.  I am very sad to see him depart this game, as he made many contributions to this game and the variant as a whole.  I have posted the vacancy on the DC page and called for a replacement.  I will post a new deadline after we find our new player.

Sorry for the inconvenience -

Ryuzoji Takanobu of Hizen province was a rising daimyo that ultimately bit off more than he could chew.  His attempts to suppress the rebellious clans of the Shimabara peninsula in Hizen resulted in an appeal by the Arima clan to by the powerful Shimazu clain of Satsuma.  The Shimazu would ultimately claim both the Ryuzoji lands and the life of Takanobu himself.  Before this untimely demise however, Takanobu was one of the three great daimyo of Kyushu, alongside the Otomo of Bungo province, and the Shimazu of Satsuma.

***TEAHOUSE COMMENTARY:  In our Sengoku-jidai, the Ryuzoji name is a distant memory, a minor nuisance crushed under the heel of the Mori clan, who have since turned their attentions to the north.  Their assistance to the Asakura is not enough to prevent the destruction of Kaga by Uesugi forces however.  In the south, the Chosokabe succeed in advancing to the critical Totomi Sea, and shifting the naval fight in their favor.  Hojo and Oda remain locked in a bitter struggle for the heart of Honshu.  Meanwhile, Satomi Yoshihiro of Hitachi enjoys peacefully watching the cherry blossoms fall, and notes the absence of emissaries in his court.

(again)

As most of you know, we've been holding for a while to get this one going. variants can be hit and miss like that.  But now we have 7 players, and I've heard from all 7 at some point confirming interest.  For some of you tho, that was a
month ago.

So let's get set for a little déjà vu, and confirm again!  (just to be sure all are good, nobody has moved on, etc).  With a title like this, the game is destined to be a classic, and it never hurts to revisit a classic twice so let's have
those reconfirms!  Reply to the group, just to let all know we're here and ready to go.  This should only take a day or two, then we can assign powers (random) and get it rolling!

Remember you can find anything you need about the game on the game page:
www.diplomaticcorp.com?game=dc334

If you ever don't get results from me and you think you may have missed them, be sure to check there.  Check thru my house rules.  They're linked there on the game page.  They cover some key things like delays, extensions, NMR's, and so
on.  All good stuff to know about in advance.

Me. I live in the Chicago suburbs, and take a pretty active role in the operations of dc.  Aside from that I'm an IT guy for work, and have been building a mega playhouse / tree fort in our back yard for the last year and a half, and some
major LEGO structures in our basement.  All with our 3 little kids, 1, 3, and 7.

I guess that's about it for now!  Let's see if we can get it going by the end of the week.
Enjoy,
-mike
