DC 313 Russian EOG - untitled36 (Jun 29, 2010, 1:01 pm) |
Wow. What a ride it's been. I have to admit that this has been perhaps the most frustrating dip game I've been a part of, but I still had a fun time dealing with everything!
I started off with a "fool-proof" opening alliance structure. I simultaneously forged an alliance with France and Germany vs England, and Italy and Austria vs Turkey. It was a great plan! Until France and Germany bailed, and Austria stabbed me! At that point, my only neighbors were England, who I had stabbed, turkey, who I was at war with, and Austria, who betrayed me. Not a good beginning for our hero. I kept trying to forge an alliance with Turkey, but he lied to me through his teeth almost literally every turn.
By Fall of 06, things looked bad for Russia. Turkey had pressed me practically back to Stp, England was closing in in the northwest, and I was focused on trying to stop Italy from soloing, which was a very real danger at the time. I tried over and over to forge an anti-Italy alliance with England, myself, and turkey, but to no avail. So I was left trying to hold Munich, which I believed was the key holding Italy back from Soloing.
Finally, in Fall of 08, I decided to switch tactics. England and Turkey clearly weren't interested in an alliance, so I let italy into Munich, thinking even if he soloed, I could at least retain a survival. Once I did that, relations with England changed almost overnight. I have to admit, England had little reason to trust me after my early stab, but my later pleas for an alliance were sincere, and he eventually decided to trust me. In a bold display of trust, we simultaneously disbanded scandanavia (him disbanding norway, and me disbanding sweden). Thus was the beginning of a solid alliance.
We held back Italy well enough and long enough that Turkey inevitably ended up turning on him. Italy quickly got on board and together we worked out a stalemate line to stop Turkey just shy of victory.
In hindsight, I made some bad calls this game. First, I should have worked with England sooner. He was a solid ally, but I think my early dishonesty was a big red flag for him. In my defense, France and I had a diplomatic history. She and I amicably split one of last years Blitz games in 1 17/17 draw. We were allies from start to finish, and so I knew I could trust her completely. Germany I was less close to, but I still knew him, and figured he'd go along. I had no prior experience with England. Still, it appears I bet on the wrong horse in this round.
Second, I should have learned not to focus so heavily in the north so early. It invites a stab from austria too easily. I am currently playing another game (DC309) which started almost the same day as this one, and I am russia in that game as well, and the same thing happened. I need to learn to focus south a little more at first. Plus, I'd been stabbed by our austrian player before.
In short, I'm shocked that I'm sitting here as a partner in a draw in this game. This was a weird one, especially with the two abandons so early on.
England - Thanks for the great end-game alliance. I wish it had come sooner, but I have to take the blame for that. Sorry about the early stab(s).
Italy - Well played. You seemed a bit over trusting, first of austria, and then of turkey, but I can't deny that you forged a great empire, and came close to pulling off a solo yourself. And when the rubber hit the road, you got on board, and did a great job holding back the turkish tide.
Austria - I guess I never learn. Still, I can't blame you. You were looking out for your best interest, and I showed you a target too good to pass up.
Turkey - I don't hate you. Really. I was very frustrated with your continual lies. Especially the ones that didn't seem likely to net you anything. In my mind, stabbing should be reserved for deadly blows, not just grabbing a single center. On the other hand, you nearly pulled off a win this time, so what do I know!
France and Germany - Fun while it lasted. I wish the two of you had lasted a bit longer though!
Sean Cable - Thanks for being "me" for a week. You deserve a part of this draw too!
Sam - Yeah, the Gming was somewhat erratic (I'm still waiting for the adjucation of Winter 1912 (i think that's the missing one)). But speaking as a fellow GM, I know it's a hard and thankless job, especially during the Blitz. We really do appreciate you sticking with it. Really.
I'm sure I'll see some of you again!

DC224: Ogres EOG - offdisc (Jun 29, 2010, 12:45 pm) |
Hi All,
OK, I'll be the first to open his mouth. Raise your hands in this comes as a surprise.
What a fun, exciting game this was!!! And congrats to all the remaining players for surviving and holding fast and true to their alliances.
This has been, by far, the most diplomatic game I've ever played. Usually I gather between 100 - 130 messages during a Diplomacy game. This game ended with 216 distinct threads, several of which had over 50 messages included. Total message count is close to 500! Some of the skew is due to the large number of players, but mostly it is due to the general diplomatic skills of the later players.
Funny to see how "predictive" the original emails were... in one of my first communiques (to the Wizards), I wrote:
> I want to build a strong defense against the Rogues, Trolls, and Pirates.
Pretty good for a cracked crystal ball!!!!
That outlined my strategy for the entire game. I figured that if those 3 couldn't cross my borders, I'd be safe; which, after 28 turns and over 1 year of play, turned out to be the right strategy!
I joined the game in late April 2009, as Fall 06 was commencing, riding in on my horse exclaiming "The Light Brigade Cavalry has arrived". I expected a bit of short play, simply holding onto the Ogre position as everyone else beat the heck out of me. But the tide turned immediately with Suzanne stepping in for the Undead. 2 replacements starting at the same time? Instant alliance! I also reached out to all my neighbors, offering peace and friendship. All responded the same, but the Elves immediately stepped up to fight. My path was set.
The Wizard stepped forward first and offered information and support. The Dwarves were straddling a fence, so I marked them as a target once I cleared the south continent. The Underworld was the key to victory in game 1 of this map, so I knew the possibilities it held.
Taking out the Elves went a lot faster than expected -- not due to Garry's play, but due to everyone around him agreeing to the proposed split of his centers. Within one turn, Elves went from a secure position to barely hanging on. So, knocked down to 2 centers, Garry jumped on my offer to keep him alive and turned against the Wizards.
Now, at the time, Max and I had a cordial relationship. But he'd also been passing secrets to Garry, and when Garry agreed to join me, I saw how far Max had gone as a double-agent. He was immediately marked for death --- and I'm fairly certain he wasn't surprised. Wizards also turned out to be harder to kill off than expected, and I chased him all over the lower map! In the process, I tried to end the Pirate/Archer war and bring the Pirates in to assist against the Wiz. This allowed my units to ride next to Cap'n Penner's borders and set up an attack, but it also may have been the begining of the end for my Solo possibilities.
By the end of 08, Elves were down to bare bones, Wizards were controlled and about to fall --- and Sims was already expressing fears that I was trying to Solo, even though he still had more centers than I did and a strong alliance with the Trolls, holding the second-most centers,
Next up were the Dwarves and trying to force a wedge between Trolls and Rogues. Suzanne and I were still in close contact, but had stopped coordinating attacks. Nigel took over for the Archers and we began working together against the R/T/F alliance. Knights also tried to join, but were in really bad shape up north. Breaking R/F soon became my sole focus -- unfortunately, I never accomplished it and they became an unbreakable force.
By Fall 12, Elves had tried to flip sides (still not sure what Garry was thinking... and seeing how Suzanne ended up surviving, I wonder if he regrets his stab?) and were killed off. The Dwarves were done, and Warren and I controlled the Underworld. The wedge had just been forced between Rogues and Trolls, and Rogues began their push on me to alliance. However, we immediately had disagreements on the state of the board and the future strategy. 2 cases in point: Rogues attacks on Knights prevented me from pushing into Dragon's Teeth and escaping the Underworld; Ogres support of Undead and reluctance to change her focus to Trolls. Rogues were already obsessed at knocking out Trolls and Undead.
Of course, I couldn't admit to Rogues that I had been working with the Trolls! But I also wasn't directing Suzanne against Rogues. In fact, as I was trying to convince Trolls to stab Rogues, I was working on Suzanne to attack Trolls. My goal was instability in that arena, and the ability to keep all 3 powers fighting each other while I moved in to take out any (or all) who fell far behind.
Maybe I pushed too hard though. Because when Suzanne did finally turn towards the Rogues, the Trolls gave up their fight. I'm still not entirely sure what I could have done differently in that area, except join forces with Rogues -- which just seemed impossible because of the obvious support he was giving to all my other enemies. But as it turned out, all the powers involved were part of the final draw.
On the other side of the board, I began my crusade against the Pirates. Working with Trolls, we kept the pressure and knocked the Pirates back pretty far. And then I got greedy! Suzanne had been pushing against the Trolls, but screaming for me to help her. I viewed the Pirates as the bigger threat for the moment. The Rogues executed a great move against the Suzanne, and the Undead broke ranks. Maybe she thought I was setting her up for a fall (maybe I was!) and wouldn't support her. In any case, at the exact moment I turned and stabbed the Trolls -- forcing them into a lasting peace with Rogues -- Suzanne stopped fighting them. Ugh!
Well, that was that. Warren missed moves in Fall 16, and jumped to support Rogues. My growth had hit 34 centers to Sim's 21, but R/F/T was an unbreakable team -- they controlled the outer edges of the lower board, the Underworld's northern exits, and the middle oceans. My only chance was to convince the Pirates to break the Fairy line. Good for Sims! He worked his magic and Pirates immediately fell back to supporting the Faeries instead of attacking.
Once Pirates made their intention clear, I began submitting DIAS votes. I missed one season, but all others were submitted by me (and possibly other players as well). I voted YES to all of them, but thus began the Sims/Hoffman finger-pointing sessions. I even went so far as to send in a list of Draw votes including everyone EXCEPT me -- but I voted NO to all of those -- to make it seem as if everyone else also wanted to end the game. Thought maybe it would convince the holdout(s) to change their votes. That strategy backfired! So my next strategy was to convince everyone to simply HOLD positions. Thanks to Penner and Suzanne who came through on that. Once Sims & I stopped yelling at each other, I fell back into a "pull back" strategy to signal that I was totally onboard with the DIAS. Maybe my last pull-backs were enough to convince the holdout of my intention to end the game, or maybe they finally became as bored as the rest of us. Whichever, the draw was finally passed.
Overall, this was a fantastic game! I would have liked a smaller draw at the end, but I let my loyalty to Suzanne sway my judgement and I'm glad for that. A 5-way is no better than a 6-way really, and I never trusted Rogues to attack the Fairies if I took out the Undead. No reason to destroy a great working relationship for one less draw participant. But I give tons of credit to Sims for pushing HARD for the stab, and look forward to playing with him in a future game! (Hopefully *with* and not *against* him! I could do with less arguing! ) I also look forward to facing off against ALL of you in the future!
Mike Hoffman

Well we all knew this was coming, but it's official: DC313 is over. It's been an amazing ride with you guys. From the early eliminations to the final members of the Draw, all of you played very well, and I would be honored to see you again in any game I am part of. I would, however, like to take this moment to apologize for the inconstancy of my GMing this game. About a day after this game started, my life got a lot more complicated, and I just want to take this moment to thank Mike for picking up the massive amounts of slack I generated. Again, it was an honor to serve as your GM, and good luck to you all!

Hey Stabbers,
What's happening? Everybody take a sabbatical this Spring? Except for our buddies France and England, who moved their battle from Spain to the Mid-Atlantic Ocean, we have ZERO conflicts this turn. You know what that means. It's one big, black map except for those three little spaces in the far west.

I'm with Mark here. if Hoffman or anyone else still thought that they could make the solo, it would
be worth waiting for. But otherwise, why drag it out, just to whittle down the draw?
EOG follows.

Yeah!!!
Yes, it could have been a smaller draw after several more months of play
but why bother? It was a draw regardless. Only Hoffman had winning
chances left and then only if the Rogues and Faeries fought each other.
Good game all.

dc330: Sp37 Deadline 25 hours away - dknemeyer (Jun 28, 2010, 3:10 pm) |
Hi Everyone,
A friendly reminder that the final deadline for our spring 1937 is a mere 25 hours away! One set of orders still missing; if I haven't confirmed receiving your orders you are the missing party...
I am traveling this week and don't yet know where I will be staying Tuesday night. There is a chance that I do not have connectivity to adjudicate tomorrow night. While I certainly do not expect that it is at least within the realm of possibility. If that were to happen I will adjudicate Wednesday before lunch my time.
Stepping on a plane in a few minutes, good luck to you all this season!

dc311 Spring '14 Results - dknemeyer (Jun 28, 2010, 3:07 pm) |
Hi Folks,
With two straight NMR's in dc314 by Russia, Chris Morse is going to win the Winter Blitz and I have no chance to do better then second place. Thus I will be proposing and voting affirmatively for an England-Germany draw every season from here on out, barring England stabbing me. I have no intent to solo but if the group keeps voting down a 2-way it is within the bounds of reason that I fall ass-backwards into it. My suggestion is we vote for the draw and move on to other games.

dc311 Spring '14 Results (Winter Blitz) dknemeyer Jun 28, 03:07 pm |
Hi Folks,
With two straight NMR's in dc314 by Russia, Chris Morse is going to win the Winter Blitz and I have no chance to do better then second place.

DIAS Proposal Fails
But Fret Not, There is a New DIAS Proposal for Spring 21
And, Since Slaughter is Officially Going to Be 21, I Guess It Can Drink Leprechaun Ale!
Undead and Faeries Lose a Center to the Ogres (Although in the Ogres Defense, One
WAS Previously an Ogre Center)
Some Confusion on the High Seas? (literally!)
Well there is little of note that actually occurred. The majority of the orders looked eerily familiar...
However, we do have the semi-annual excitement of the DIAS vote that fails again and the like 13th one is proposed anew. And we have confusion? on the High Seas as a Rogue ship gently bounces the Trolls out and thus they require a retreat.
The High Seas can retreat to any number of places so just let me know where they should go.
Pending the receipt of the retreat of the High Seas, let's set adjustments due by Friday June 11th at 6pm. Ironically I will be going to see Shrek that night...
Adjustments will be (assuming a Troll retreat in lieu of OTB):
Faeries remove 1
Rogues build 1
Ogres build 2
We will then move to Spring with a deadline of the 15th of June at 6pm CST.
GM NOTE: I had a late request to move the deadline. I decided not to because I did not get a requested date for the extension to end and I could not hold up any more. I did NOT look at orders prior to making that decision because I did not want my decision influenced.

but why bother? It was a draw regardless. Only Hoffman had winning
chances left and then only if the Rogues and Faeries fought each other.
Good game all.
Cheers,
Mark

Otomo Sorin was the lord of Funai castle in Bungo province, a wealthy
port on the eastern coast of Kyushu. Sorin was a powerful daimyo in
his own right, but was ultimately eclipsed by the powerful Shimazu and
Mori clans that surrrounded his position. He is known to history as
one of the few daimyo that formally converted to Christianity, and for
requesting Toyotomi Hideyoshi's assistance against the Shimazu, an act
that ultimately resulted in Hideyoshi's dominance of all of Kyushu.
***TEAHOUSE COMMENTARY: The Chosokabe trade their position in Pacific
Ocean for Kumano Sea, while on land their trust is rewarded both by
Mori and Asakura. Hojo advances his naval lines to Pacific Ocean, but
stalls on the front against Oda. Asakura suffers a fierce Uesugi
invasion of Kaga and Echizen, though only one of those attacks
succeeds. And Satomi Yoshihiro quietly remains in far-flung Hitachi,
pondering the afterlife...

Hey All,
Blue hurt himself and is drugged up. As a result he's asked for a delay. He asked for 48 hours, but that would put the deadline on a Saturday, which I'd like to avoid. Let's go with Monday July 5th at 9 pm.
Blue, recover quickly!
Best,

Guys,
Prognosis was worse that I thought - spent significant
amounts of the weekend in the ER and Urgent Care of my HMO. I have a herniated
l4-l5 disc in my spine. I have submitted orders for this turn, but due to the
likely course of treatment I will be undergoing I have to either offer my
resignation of my position (under the don't Dip drugged standard) or ask for at
a two week delay. I will understand if you need to replace me here, and
apologise for having held things up so much recently.

Hi guys,
Regardless, I'm going to adjudicate the turn tomorrow at 9 (no receipt = no orders received). I'd like to see what people want to do moving forward. Delay two weeks after tomorrow's adjudication, or seek a replacement.
Let me know in the next couple of days. If we need a replacement, best to start looking. If not that's cool too in my books.
Best,
Mike

While from a tactical standpoint I should probably push for a replacement, I'd really like for Sean to finish it out too. I'm fine taking it at a leisurely pace for a while. With the DC Blitz just finishing for me, I'm in no hurry for short deadlines for a while.
