DC298 Fall 1922 Adjucation - untitled36   (Jun 10, 2010, 9:07 am)
 Hey all,

The war ends! Russia ends the game with 21(!) supply centers! I think we all knew the game would end this turn, but you all did a great job with a last ditch effort of trying to stop him. Thanks for sticking with it till the end. I'd love to see end of game summaries by everyone (not just the last remaining three players. I'm leaving on a week long trip come saturday, so I may have to send my EoG out after next week!

Thanks for a great game with a great group!

Wow! It's hard for me to believe this game has actually come to an end! It's definitely a bittersweet feeling for me - it's been the longest, most memorable and probably most enjoyable Dip game of my life, though I understand if the rest of you don't quite feel that way!

Alan, Clark - thanks for being such excellent adversaries. I really enjoyed matching wits with you; I'll play with you guys anytime.

Rob, Matt, Dale, GB - thanks for playing as well. And ummm, sorry for taking most of you out of the game... Yeah...

John (and Garry) - thanks for doing such a great job GMing. Like I said above, you can GM for me anytime... and maybe someday we'll get a chance to compete against each other.

I'll send out a proper EoG in the next couple of days. I just wanted to thank you all for such a great game.

(Now to figure out if I have any chance at Rd1 champion under the tiebreaker rules...)

Right, it wouldn't be Storytime w/o the ceremonial throwing up of arms by Hoffman.

I love your arguments Mike.  Ogres take 2 centers and it's "securing their lines".  Rogues take one center publicly stated, and it's "advanced".

What would you have me do?  Do you want everyone to order Holds?  I'm going to order my units, and you are going to order yours.

Oh yeah, and this message you post?  It comes 10 minutes after you write me 4 paragraphs privately going over how you want me to suggest moves to stab the Trolls and Faeries and get a 2-way.  Offer the world, give nothing, get someone to stab somoene.  It is a good strategy Mike, tho now it's just boring and repetitive.

Once you refused the DIAS I suggested that we could have actually forced thru, I think this whole strategy of yours lost its impact.

Interesting!  Faeries basically hold, Pirates *actually* hold, Trolls secure their line but get hit, Undead retreats behind Ogre lines, and Ogres secure their lines.  Who advanced this turn???  I wonder who's voting NO to the DIAS!
(Oh, and Suzanne gave me full permission to take Caer)

DIAS resubmitted, and YES vote attached.  Hope we can now all follow suit and end this game already.

DIAS Proposal Fails

Undead and Faeries Lose a Center to the Ogres (Although in the Ogres Defense, One

  WAS Previously an Ogre Center)

Some Confusion on the High Seas? (literally!)

Well there is little of note that actually occurred. The majority of the orders looked eerily familiar...

However, we do have the semi-annual excitement of the DIAS vote that fails again and the like 13th one is proposed anew. And we have confusion? on the High Seas as a Rogue ship gently bounces the Trolls out and thus they require a retreat.

The High Seas can retreat to any number of places so just let me know where they should go.

Pending the receipt of the retreat of the High Seas, let's set adjustments due by Friday June 11th at 6pm. Ironically I will be going to see Shrek that night...

Adjustments will be (assuming a Troll retreat in lieu of OTB):

Faeries remove 1

Rogues build 1

Ogres build 2

We will then move to Spring with a deadline of the 15th of June at 6pm CST.

GM NOTE: I had a late request to move the deadline. I decided not to because I did not get a requested date for the extension to end and I could not hold up any more. I did NOT look at orders prior to making that decision because I did not want my decision influenced.

Guys,  It's just been pointed out to me that I made a minor oversight in this adjudication. I listed the Scots builds correctly in the Orders section as two fleets, but I placed those two units, in the Disposition section, under the Armies heading. The Builds section is right, the Disposition is wrong. Sorry for any confusion this may have caused, and I'm glad it was brought to my attention so I could clear it up.

1648 091010: Winter 1659 Retreats/Adjustments - charlesf   (Jun 09, 2010, 9:29 pm)

Hallo zusammen,

let me start with the first order of business: All draw proposals failed.

I'm glad we're on track. In recent days I've had a friendly and
enlightening conversation with Mike Sims and Mike Hoffman about various aspects
of house rules and GMing policy. While not too long after having started this
game I recognised that my policy on NMRs was too strict, I was reluctant to
change it mid-stream since players had signed up having considered the house
rules I had at that point provided. Mike Sims' view however that a GM ought
not have scruples about unilaterally altering his GMing policy during
a game and I've now warmed to that idea. While I don't think one ought to
alter a policy once an acute issue arises (as was the case last Friday),
freed of a particular case being at hand:

I'm now according each player two
six-hour grace periods for the remainder of the game that may be made use
of if a deadline's missed.

This actually is how I handle things in my 1936 game I'm
running. While I do want to avoid NMRs as I consider them a bane of the
game (especially playtests) rather than a legitimate part of the game (here
Mike Sims and I differ), a more lenient standard serves both the players and the
game better. Not like I felt happy about replacing a generally very
reliable player.

As I gain more experience in running games, my thinking on how to
do stuff and how best to avoid certain pitfalls evolves. Live and learn.
Okay, 'nuff of this GM-navel-gazing...

Note the below French press. If ole Henri IV once said that "Paris was
worth a mass", his present successor plainly seems to be of the opinion that
"Aachen's worth getting rid of mass!" A Protestant on the French and Imperial
thrones? Hell has officially frozen over... No wonder the Holy Inquisition's
confused...

The Spring 1660 Moves due Monday, 14 June 6 PM
CET. So prelims please on Saturday. I trust that the shift back to a
Monday/Wednesday routine works for you all. If not, let me know.

Liebe Grüsse,

Charles

(DC 324) A Stab in the Dark - Autumn 1906 Results - Corrino   (Jun 09, 2010, 9:10 pm)
Hi Players,

This year we say "Good-bye" to our second player.  Germany has been eliminated, as most of you probably surmised from yesterday's results.  Good luck to our Kaiser in his new career in scrap metal!

As always, your individual reports have retreat and adjustment info that you need.  Here are the current SC counts for all countries at the end of 1906.

COUNTRY    SC
Austria     0    ... eliminated 1903

England    10

France      7

Germany     0    ... eliminated 1906

Italy       4

Russia      2

Turkey     11

==================================================

NEXT DEADLINE:

Winter 1906/Spring 1907 are due Friday, June 11, at 8 pm Eastern
time.  If all orders are in and marked Final I may adjudicate 24 hours earlier.

HOWEVER... If I do not receive orders from Italy I will not NMR him again but will instead seek a replacement.  One NMR can have a significant effect on the game.  Two in a row would damage it severely, in my opinion.

Cheers,
Chris

DC319: Winter 1939 Retreats/Adjustments - charlesf   (Jun 09, 2010, 8:09 pm)

Hallo zusammen,

I'm afraid I managed to mislabel the past season's adjucation. Apparently
nobody noticed though - or at least didn't point out that goof-up of mine.
Clearly my brain had already moved on to retreats/adjustments in the fall.
:p

Of course, now you're getting the real deal!

Apparently it's a rather good time to be a navy contractor. For three grand
new battleships were baptised with great fanfare, while army generals seem to
have had less success clamouring for more war matériel. Quite a different
picture from say Winter 1936, when a mere 9% of new armaments investment went
into naval buildup (one fleet, ten armies). Nowadays the admirals have their
hands on 60% of naval expenditure, obviously with a mind to catching up with the
terrestrial services armaments head-start... I wonder how it's being financed...
In Germany, prior to WW1 a tax on champagne was introduced to help finance
Tirpitz's naval armaments programme. Yep, drinking sparkling wine was a most
patriotic endeavour back then.

We now also have our first draw proposal on the table:

- a British-German-Italian-Polish-Turkish five-way draw

The deadline for voting on it will coincide with the coming spring
deadline.

As I trust some of you know, there's now also a second 1936 game afoot
(DC330). Dirk's trying his hand at GMing and yours truly has entered the fray
championing the Fatherland. Hooray, I actually get to play one of my variants!
Smile If you want to observe the game, I suggest you drop our Duce a
note.

Anyway, I've taken the liberty of adding DC330's players to the observer
list of this game. Guys, let me know if you don't want to see what these DC319
blokes are up to!

The Spring 1940 Moves are due NLT 6PM CET on Monday, 14
June. So please send my your prelims no later than
Saturday.

Liebe Grüsse,

Charles

(DC 326) Gumball - Spring 1903 Results - Corrino   (Jun 09, 2010, 8:07 pm)
Hey there, Gumballers!

Thanks to all for getting their orders in on time.  So far we're perfect with zero NMR's.  Keep it up!

Spring 1903 saw an interesting mix of daggers and dancing.  My personal favorite moments were:

. Russia forcing the Turkish fleet in Rumania to retreat to one of his home Supply Centers.
. Solid defense by the English and the Turks succeeds in saving Denmark and Bulgaria, respectively.
. French and Italian fleets prepare, perhaps, to call at exotic foreign ports; and
. France and Russia meet unexpectedly in the Italian Alps and exchange small talk whilst their Italian hosts are nowhere to be seen.

We have only one retreat required (Turkish F Rumania) and only one spot available for its retreat (Sevastopol) so that
retreat has been made automatically.  If the Sultan would prefer to retreat his unit off the board instead, he need only contact me within 24 hours and I will relay his decision to everyone.

Our next deadline is Fall 1903 on Wednesday, June 16, at 8 pm Eastern US time.

Please check the adjudication below and let me know promptly if there are any errors.

Cheers,
Chris

Balkans 1860 Revisions - Stage 1 (Long Version) - Kenshi777   (Jun 09, 2010, 2:38 pm)
Hi Allen and all, please see comments inserted below with ***
I think some of this is going too far.
1 - Does the new Austrian position in Kolosvar force Austrian/Romanian
conflict too much, or can it also help them attack Serbia together?
Too much, and Romania has almost the same advantage, just needs to
drive AH out of Kolosvar. Also may weaken AH so Serbia attacks with
Italy almost inevitably. My temptation as AH would be to cede Kol to
Rumania and elicit a juggernaut.
***Hm. That would be undesirable. I was fairly convinced the Turkish
F Sev was a good thing, but not so much about Austria gaining
Kolosvar. So okay, Austrian A Kolosvar will be removed. Instead, I
will consolidate Budapest and Pecs to give the Austrians more freedom
to swing forces from east to west rapidly.***
2 - Does the new Turkish position in Sevastopol allow the Turks the
option to work with or against the Romanians? (ideally, DMZing BeC
and Ode is a good option, and R/T could attack B together?) Or the
Turks could join in a dogpile on the Romanians.
This I actually like, but I think encourages Ottoman-Rumania alliance
and reduces the chance of Bulgaria surviving. Maybe I was wrong about
this, now that I look at this map, Sev seems like an open center.
***Hm - perhaps. But aren't the Bulgarians pretty strong now? They
were weak before, granted - but they stand a very strong chance of
gaining three SCs in the first year in either of the two openings
below:
F Brg - Var
A Plo - Edi
A Sof - Rus
or
F Brg S A Plo - Edi
A Plo - Edi
A Sof - Rus
We also have yet to see a real Bulgarian/Ottoman alliance, but I think
it would be a powerhouse, and the Ottomans have a lot of really good
reasons to help the Bulgarians against Romania with F Sev in exchange
for support against Greece. All that to say - I think B/O is every
bit as much of a good juggernaut as R/O would be with the addition of
F Sev. B/G should work well too, a strong threat to Ottoman survival,
though by design Greece should favor going after Italy unless Bulgaria
is committed to their cause against the Ottomans.***
3 - Are Austria and Serbia now somewhat more inclined to work together
with SC Sarajevo removed, and the new opportunities against Romania
(offset slightly by increased tension over Agram). Concerned that I
hurt Serbia too much by removing Sarajevo - should I restore it and
remove something else?
Without SC Sarajevo Serbia has no easy task and could face a 6 center
Austria...is there a way to divide Agram a little by cutting of it's
southern jut and making that part either a territory or SC? Agram
would still touch the sea, but there'd be something between Agram and
Cetinje. Maybe that alone would reduce the tensions. Leave Sarajevo
as a SC.
***That's the way it was in Rev1 - for this draft, I removed Spalato,
which separated Cetinje from Agram, but virtually guaranteed Agram
went to the Austrians. That was the problem though - if the Austrians
usually guarantee Agram, and the Serbs usually guarantee Sarajevo,
that leaves them staring each other down at the beginning of the
second year.
Another option is to go back to the first draft and make Nis an open
SC, but detach the bottom part to make a buffer (non SC) territory
between Nis and Sofia (called Vranje). Then the question becomes
whether Nis or Kragujevac should be the Serb home SC. I'm thinking
Nis - to allow an option to play for the new Craiova SC. I'm trying
to achieve the dynamic where Austria and Serbia can bounce each other
with fleets in Agram at least in the Spring, and Serbia isn't pushed
right up to the Austrian border in Sarajevo. *That* is a big part of
what leads to the forced conflict I think.
One more wild option - Cetinje was actually the capital of independent
Montenegro, a Serbian ally. I could make *that* an open SC, and house
the Serbs in Nis (split as above), Kragujevac, and Beograd. But that
leaves the Serbs without any sea port home SC - so I then need to
either switch the variant to chaos builds (which I don't want to do)
or accept that Serbia will be completely removed from the fight in
Italy (which I don't want either). Or I could drastically (and
ahistorically) redraw the borders to give Serbia another seaport.
Thoughts on both these options? (the last is reflected on the new
draft map, along with a new SC in Prizren and a move of SC Agram to
Spalato (with redraw)***
Maybe Mike's right, the map needs another playtest before this serious
of an edit. Putting units in Sev and Kol may be too much.
***I disagree - I gleaned a lot of useful information out of this
playtest, and am convinced there are some glaring flaws that need to
be addressed. Besides - this variant is young by most standards -
only born in 2008, and only been through one revision so far. Ancient
Med went through 9 full revisions, with other minor tweaks in between
- and that's what makes it one of the best and most balanced variants
out there today.
That said - I think you and Mike have talked me out of the Austrian
addition of Kolosvar as a starting SC. Still looking at the Serbian
thing - hope to hear some good feedback on the changes shown on the
attached map. Includes some revisions that almost made the cut for
Rev1, but were removed at the last second. It can be prettied up
later, but just trying to show the new SC tweaks and border redraws
for now.
One more miscellaneous change (not yet shown on the draft map) -
Myrtoan Sea - does anyone think that serves a good purpose? Or should
I just consolidate it with Ionian Sea?
Also - just for your amusement, I attached a list of thoughts I had
after the Spring 1860 opening moves in this game. Most of my
predictions were off, but it makes for an interesting read...
And for Nigel - just found out Spalato (Split), which is now an SC,
was also a Greek colony - so you can add it to your target list next
time Smile***
Thanks!
B.

But Fret Not, There is a New DIAS Proposal for Spring 21

And, Since Slaughter is Officially Going to Be 21, I Guess It Can Drink Leprechaun Ale!

Garry

Still trying to recall when I dismissed this proposed DIAS you suggested.  I seem to recall something about giving up GGL, letting Faerie fleets sail down into RoD, give up any claims to the Underworld, and possibly throw in my first-born child.  Not sure what surprised you when I said that wasn't so much a plan for a DIAS but a plan for the "death of the Ogres".

Anyway, I never suggested that your "advance" had anything to do with the center you gained.  It didn't.  But an unexpected attack on the High Seas?  Now that *IS* aggressive.

I also never asked you to stab either the Trolls or the Faeries --- at least not this time. Smile  I said I was perfectly happy with the current 6-way, but if you came up with a plan for a 2-way or 3-way that didn't involve me inviting everyone to tea in my home centers, I'd be willing to listen.  You don't want to give away your strategies, so no plan will be made.

So just Vote YES already and let's put this game into the history books.

Mike, go back and read it, this is a waste of time.  Email, titled "an idea".  You replied something along the lines of "what kind of plan is that" even tho it would have involved me *not* taking Suzanne's last home center, you not taking more from the Faeries, and us forcing a DIAS thru in 2 years flat.  2 more turns now and we'd be there if you had wanted it, and nothing could have prevented it.

You scoffed it away and went back to pointing fingers.

And I will reiterate: if you had ever come up with a plan that didn't involve me allowing every other country to run rampant across my home centers, I'd have approved it.  You didn't -- you came up with a plan that left both Suzanne and I vulnerable to your good graces and trusting you on your word. HA!

So, I did what I said I would: I moved Pwyll over to GGL and never attack Raz again.  My line is drawn, and Pwyll is safe.
On the other hand, you also did exactly what you said you would do: you attacked Skel and now sit there and Uhl.

Are we just as safe now as we would have been if I had pulled Pwyll?  NO.... but we're safer.  Everyone is.  So why can't we force that same draw you talked about?

Mike, I'm sure you understand the voting process.  Whatever you say here (whatever I say) clealry doesn't matter, thus I came up w a way to prove you would not go for a DIAS if one were presented in a way that the voting could be taken out of the picture.

For the record, I might not have held across the board if I'd had time to actually put in orders.  I was on my way out the door to spend a week away from home when I realize that if I NMR'd that my vote would be a no... so I at least got that in.

As for the other two Mikes, I don't think either of you will change any of our opinions any more.  I wouldn't bother to hazard a guess as to which one is voting down the DIAS, but I don't care any more... and any number of emails to everyone won't make me care an ounce higher.  For the sake of everyone's sanity and time, let's please end it now.

Fwd: Greetings from Californian Britian - sunchung   (Jun 09, 2010, 11:33 am)
* Note - I sent this to the wrong email alias earlier this week.  Apologies!  It is posted on the DC site, but I'm not too sure everyone has read the community portion there recently.

Below is my introduction.

Hello,

Greetings - I look forward to playing with everyone in this game.  A bit about my Diplomacy history.  I just started playing Diplomacy again after about a +7 year hiatus.  Back when I did play in my first go around, it was off of the email newsgroup called Cat23.  It's since morphed, I believe, into www.diplomaticcorp.com.  A friend of mine who used to also play on Cat23 forwarded an invite for the Winterblitz 2010 and that's how I got re-acquainted with Diplomacy and the DC site.  I played my first game earlier this year, and was fortunate enough to play in a game with our GM Dirk.  It was this connection that has brought me to this game.  I've never played a variant of Diplomacy other than Colonial Diplomacy and Gunboat, so I look forward to this game.  I love the idea of the connected map plus the balanced nature of the powers and struggles.  And I look forward to having a very dynamic map where each player needs to contact every other player - not just be focused on a particular theater.  To be frank, the complexity of this variant both excite me and worry me - I hope I have the intellectual horsepower to keep up with all of the moving parts!

A bit about me.  I'm in the San Francisco bay area with two young kids, so hopefully they won't tire me out too much (and allow me to think straight!).  I don't know any of the other players other than our GM.  Just one last note of thanks to Charles for creating this variant and Dirk for hosting the game.  I've shied away from other Diplomacy sites that use judges as I think they tend to attract more casual players that are less committed to the game.  Thanks you for the volunteer work and service to the DC community/players.

Balkans 1860 Revisions - Stage 1 (Long Version) - Kenshi777   (Jun 09, 2010, 11:14 am)
Greece can throw a wrench in Italy's plans no (as we saw in DC 28Cool?
Palermo can be guaranteed in the first year with good follow on
options. (of course
they do need either Austria or Serbia to help). Greece is intended to
be the big playmaker between Italy and the Turks - they can guarantee
either Palermo or Heraklion, but not both. Typically, I expect they
will choose to guarantee one of those two using both fleets, and
continue their drive in that direction (against either the Turks or
Italians).
Thanks!

Hi all,

I am still missing one set of build orders. To the individual in question, I will give you a grace period of another 48 hours. Failure to submit a set of builds, will look bad on your DC record, and not to mention, have a dramatic impact on the game.

Deadline for next Spring will be revised once the 48 hours are up.

(DC 324) A Stab in the Dark - Fall 1906 Results - Corrino   (Jun 08, 2010, 11:02 pm)
Hello Stabbers,

Sorry for the late posting, but unfortunately we have our first NMR of the game as Italy has failed to submit orders for this season.  Hate to do it, but as I said when we started, I can be flexible if you let me know there's a problem, but if I don't hear anything you get a couple of hours grace and then I'm going to go ahead and adjudicate.

What is the price of the NMR?  Well, the loss of Tyrrhenian Sea is the only visible consequence.  We'll have to wait until the Autumn report to find out whether it cost him in the SC department.

The rest of the map shows surprising little activity compared to Fall seasons past.  We have Russia and England bouncing in what used to be Germany, and what could be called a token bounce in Portugal
between France and England.

RETREAT REQUIRED:  Italian fleet Tyrrhenian Sea.  Due by 8:00 pm Eastern time tomorrow, June 9.

The Autumn report will be out tomorrow with SC totals.

Chris

Orders as resolved:
=====================================
England:
F Baltic Sea - Berlin (*Bounce*)
F Gulf of Lyon - Tyrrhenian Sea
F Holland Supports * (*Cut*)
F Kiel Supports * (*Cut*)
F Mid-Atlantic Ocean - Portugal (*Bounce*)
F Western Mediterranean Supports F Gulf of Lyon - Tyrrhenian Sea

France:
F Spain(sc) - Portugal (*Bounce*)

Germany:
F Helgoland Bight - Holland (*Fails*)

Italy:
A Trieste Hold
F Tyrrhenian Sea Hold (*Dislodged*)

Russia:
A Prussia - Berlin (*Bounce*)
A Ruhr - Kiel (*Fails*)

Turkey:
F Albania - Trieste (*Fails*)

Balkans 1860 Revisions - Stage 1 (Long Version) - FuzzyLogic   (Jun 08, 2010, 6:48 pm)
Turkey starts w 4 and a F Sev? And Austria is right behind Romaina?
Wow. Glad I didn't get Romania in this version! Italy is way too
isolated. One of the problems of the map, Italy gets that whole
peninsula to himself. A starting next to I was needed. Now it's too
easy to split Salz/Ven, call a DMZ, and Italy grows to 7 unincumbered.

Ultimately these are your decisions. It's your variant.
***Well, yeah, but the point of the playtest is to solicit your opinions
Smile As I'm learning in DC 322 (Dark Ages) you never really see all the
cracks in the design until you play yourself. Second best is to listen
closely to feedback from others who have played.***
As the map is now, it does play well. It would probly play well after
some of the changes too. It would just be different. I dunno if that's
better, I'd have to play it.
You've definitely got a good start, and I'm pretty happy w how the
play went from the Romanian pov.
***It's arguably the strongest position on the map right now Smile
If anything stood out as blaringly problematic, I'd mention it. I
think mid-game, I mentioned the difficulty Ross and I had in invading
Ottoman.
But in hindsight, that was appropriate.
***Now this is interesting - you had me sold on the whole north
Anatolian coast argument. But I suppose you're right - when Turkey is
invaded by A/R, there are only three points of entry - Constantinople,
Ankara, and Armenia. Balkans has three (Istanbul, Ankara, and Bursa)
plus a questionable fourth option - forcing the Bosporus and Sea of
Marmara. So perhaps that is okay.***
For even in Standard, if AR try to > invade T, but Italy is propping him
up, AR are going to have an insanely > difficult time w that.
Same thing here, it took BR forever to break down > Ottoman cuz Greece,
the needed 3rd angle, was working to prop him up. So
really it wasnt a map flaw, rather an annoying Nigel. So really what
we > need to be looking at here is not how to fix the map but how to
fix Nigs. > Smile
***Good luck with that re: Nigs Smile But please (all of you) take a look
at the attached map, and be particularly critical in your review of it.
If I have gone too far in my revisions, or not considered second order
effects of the changes, please let me know...
List of changes:
1 - Skopje/Bitola combined - Bitola no longer an SC.
2 - Agram/Spalato combined - Agram remains an SC.
3 - Sarajevo is no longer an SC. (considering canceling this)
4 - Brasov is an open SC. (considering Calarasi or Tiraspol as
alternatives)
5 - Craiova is an open SC.
6 - Kolosvar is an Austrian starting SC (Army).
7 - Sevastopol is a Turkish starting SC (Fleet).
8 - Istanbul now has a Turkish army instead of a fleet.
Specific questions I would like your answers to:
1 - Does the new Austrian position in Kolosvar force Austrian/Romanian
conflict too much, or can it also help them attack Serbia together?
2 - Does the new Turkish position in Sevastopol allow the Turks the
option to work with or against the Romanians? (ideally, DMZing BeC and
Ode is a good option, and R/T could attack B together?) Or the Turks
could join in a dogpile on the Romanians.
4 - simply - is Romania too disadvantaged now, or does their corner
position compensate them for the new slower growth opportunities and
external threats? I chose Brasov for now to give them one guaranteed SC
at least, but I think this, coupled with Craiova, promotes conflict with
Serbia too much.
5 - finally - please examine the specific Turkish opening of:
F Sev - Bla
A Ist - Sak
A Ank - Ist
F Izm - Bursa
Salonika is now safe even against a concerted Bulgarian/Greek attack (F
Brg - Edi, A Plo - Ser, A Lar - Koz) - but does it make the Turks too
strong?
Notes - the intent here is to make both Austria and the Ottomans (the
true regional level powers in this variant) like Russia in Standard:
strong to start, but with slower growth, and burdened by having their
fingers in lots of pies, and with more vulnerabilities.
Please let me know what you all think!
Thanks!
B.

PRESS
STATEMENT FROM THE WIZARD OFFICE OF PUBLIC AFFAIRS

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Today the Supreme Wizard Council announced its intention to cease all acts

of hostile expansion and declared itself open to peaceful vassalization by

any neighboring nation willing to grant the Wizard nation permanent control

over Faerun and Waterdeep, or even one of the two.  The Wizard Council

plans to redirect its energies toward the peaceful development of magical

energy production.

"It's quite clear that this whole idea of conquering the central island

was a huge mistake," stated Wizzie McWizzarton, chief spokesman for the

Council in a prepared statement.  "The Council cannot fully account
for the

events in the Spring of 01, at which moment the entire planet collectively

and simultaneously declared war on one another without any real

justification.  The Council now regrets its decision to participate in
this

global spasm of imperial violence.

"It is our intention to fully comply with the demands of the Magic

Non-Proliferation Treaty and utilize our enriched magic only for peaceful

energy purposes," the statement concluded.

The Wizard Council will consider any and all offers from foreign powers to

vassalize the Wizard nation, allowing a suitable partner full control over

Wizard foreign and military policies.

The Council also noted that it has officially abandoned its

previously-stated mission to "wreak fiery vengeance on any nation which
has

violated the trust of the Wizard nation," having concluded it lacks

sufficient fiery vengeance to spread among the relevant trust-violators.

This is truly the year for epic battles as forces clash in huge
numbers all across the world... The Pirates and Trolls trade volleys over the
High Seas, Ogre warships bombard the Elven defenses as the Undead clamber up
the shores at Terabithia, and the last Faerie home center falls to the
Archers...

All this while yet more units pile into the
Underworld, the Centaurs barely hold on to Mount Nimro, and our Wizards
look... inward, to more practical uses for their skills.

PLEASE
CHECK MY WORK!  This was a pretty complex turn, w units ordering across
