The new forum look - FuzzyLogic (May 26, 2010, 9:17 pm) |
Hi Charles,
I have to wonder if it's harder to read w the serif font we have now vs the (boring?) verdana we had before. Verdana seems to be the most popular for easy-on-the-eyes reading.
Threads by default, including all replies...
Currently you can go into the Category Tree, pick a topic, and then it'll show you all the (first 20?) recent messages in that topic. You can switch the view then from Compact to Brief to Full, to show the entire messages.
You want to what, be able to read one whole thread that way?
Is a thread, then, "this message" and "replies to it" and "replies to those" or is it also including walking up the tree, perhaps to the original post?
Open to any other suggestions...[Reply] |
The new forum look (Help & Suggestions) dknemeyer May 27, 09:09 am |
The main issue absolutely is the contrast. Peach on grey just ain't easy to read. |
The new forum look (Help & Suggestions) FuzzyLogic May 27, 08:58 pm |
Since we have the picture frame look what would ppl think if we went to a canvas-colored background, and black text? A lighter canvas than we have on the left side, in the currently dark frame?
Or is it as simple as a whiter font color? The peach is hard to read on the gray, agreed. It's easier to read on the charcoal. |
The new forum look (Help & Suggestions) dknemeyer May 27, 09:37 pm |
It would take some testing. The key is lots of contrast; the optimal is near-white on near-black or vice-versa for readability, but you don't need to be that pure. Given the aesthetic that you've established here I might suggest making the grey darker, maybe quite a bit darker, and get the font as close to white without breaking your overall colour palette as possible. That should do it. The only thing to be aware of then is whether or not those changes clash with other font/backgrounds elsewhere on the site so it no longer seems coherent. |
The new forum look (Help & Suggestions) sunchung May 27, 06:54 pm |
The issue I've been having with the threads is that it's embedded versus "flat". On one hand, you can see who is responding to whom, but it forces you to click through each message in order to see the entire conversation. I prefer the vBullentin style where it's a flat organization and you can see what everyone else has written.
For instance, when I click on "Community" and then "Category Tree", and then under "General" select a topic, I get a long list of new messages that all relate to the same topic. Instead, I would prefer to see all of the topics themselves. If there's a fast moving topic, then that would dominate the view. Right now, "variants vs standard" takes up 1/2 of the first page. It makes the other topics hidden. |
The new forum look (Help & Suggestions) FuzzyLogic May 27, 08:53 pm |
Ok, so that is something we can change... I clicked thru how you said, and yes, "Variants vs Standard" fills approx 40% of the messages on the 1st page of the Community forum. So what would you rather see here, "Variants vs Standard" have one line? One line with an indicator of how many replies it had? Sort it by date of last post in the topic, I presume, right?
This comes down to taste. Some forums, I've seen it where popular posts will indeed fill your general view. On others, you just have one line per thread.
Try this...
Go into like you described, then click on "Variants vs Standard" (any one of them). Read the message if you like. Then scroll down. Toward the bottom, you see two columns...
1st column is an indented tree of the current thread, showing who all replied to who.
2nd column has all threads in the Community Forum. I presume a list like this column is how you'd prefer to see the initial list? This gives you a grand overview of every thread that has been posted in Community, but very little feel for "what's being talked about, today".
That's what the other view was designed to show you. Today, these issues are hot... sort of thing.
Thoughts?

The new forum look (Help & Suggestions) FuzzyLogic May 27, 09:02 pm |
Notice this, too...
With the concept of only the most recent post in a thread being shown, it is too easy to never see the older ones, unless you show them all.
E.g. I just posted 3 messages in this thread. But when I go to the home page now, my posts about the colors and the arrangement will never get seen, unless someone happens to deliberately go into that thread and read it intentionally.
By listing all the messages, yeah, this thread does appear to dominate Help & Suggestions today, but isn't that appropriate if it's really that active? If ppl want to see older inactive threads, you can scroll down and see them in the "Threads in this Topic" section.
Just brainstorming... |
The new forum look (Help & Suggestions) dknemeyer May 27, 09:43 pm |
I think post volume matters. Traditionally DC has a very LOW post volume outside of the games themselves. Thus, if you only show the most recent single post of n topics you are going to have a small group of recent things and then a bunch of stale ones. If we assume the forums will remain lightly used into the foreseeable future, what we have now seems right.
On the other hand, in an active forum with lots of posts and diversity, it is far better to simply show the last post on each topic as Sun is mentioning.
Beyond that it is just personal preference. I'm not sure what mine is I suppose it changes on context. It sounds like Sun's is the single post/many topics. Both ways are valid in some absolute sense. |
The new forum look (Help & Suggestions) sunchung May 27, 11:23 pm |
I think having the summary of the message also confuses things a bit. You only get a glimpse of the topic, and sometimes things can meander in a thread. My 2 cents (and by the way, I really appreciate the thoughts and efforts in improving the site) is if there's an infrequent visitor to the site, then they don't quite know what people are responding to.
If you want to include the summary of the topic, and have it display on the landing page, then why not the first post of that thread? And then if you showed what the number of responses are to that topic, then you can see which are the "hot topics" currently on the site.
Lastly, I think the other thing is I think the font may be too small...
Notice this, too...
With the concept of only the most recent post in a thread being shown, it is too easy to never see the older ones, unless you show them all.

I think a single line per topic, how many postings, and the date of the last post makes sense.
In terms of threaded versus flat (I think that's the term) I realize it's a personal preference. It's just that it's sometimes hard to follow the conversation if it splits out. Where as a flat structure makes sure that the conversation is a single one... There's a website that I've seen that actually has both options. If you go to www.dpreview.com and go to the "forum section" and then click on one of the topics, there's a toggle button at the top that allows you to switch the view.

Players,
I'm giving my wit, and hence your stomachs, a break this time. Am I lazy or merely uninspired? There was a lot of mixing it up in 1904, but when we look at the numbers at the end of the year only two countries totals have changed, with Turkey up 2 SC and Russia down by the same number.
Here are the SC counts at the conclusion of 1904.
COUNTRY SC
Austria 0 ... eliminated 1903
England 9
France 5
Germany 3
Italy 5
Russia 2
Turkey 10

Intersting that Arm-Che-Sar is the quickest route to the front against
Rome then (convoys included). Also that Damascus is the only Persian
home SC that allows access to Armenia. Also interesting to note that
I've used the same route to send other armies against Rome.
Just an observation

Hi Players,
So now it's year two of our little adventure. If last year was jostling for position, this is the year that punches get exchanged. At least, that's what happens in the east. In the west, it's do-si-do and everybody rotate to the right.
Highlights:
. England ducks the war with France and finds himself with two friends eager to escort him into Sweden.
. France shifts hard to the Atlantic, only to find the English fleet has slipped away. Was it only there to distract from the German army now in Burgundy?
. Germany, meanwhile swings and misses at the Russian army in Silesia as that unit also moves away before it can be swatted
. Austria and Turkey both want Rumania, but with no coordination it's a big bounce
and the space stays white for one more season.
. And finally, our last neutral falls to the little green sailors... at least for now.
With only the one choice, the Austrian army dislodged from Galicia auto-retreats to Vienna. If the Archduke prefers to retreat off-the-board instead he need only let me know within 24 hours and I'll post the change.
Fall 1902 is up next. Deadline is Wednesday, June 3, at 8 pm Eastern US time.
Play on!

"It's like in the great stories, Mr. Frodo. The ones that really mattered. Full of darkness and danger they were. and sometimes you didn't want to know the end because how could the end be happy? How could the world go back to the way it was when so much bad had happened? But in the end, it's only a passing thing. The shadow, even the darkness must pass. A new day will come. And when the sun shines it will shine out the clearer. Those were the stories that stayed with you - That meant something. Even if you were too small to understand why. But I think, Mr. Frodo, I do understand. I know now. Folk in those stories had lots of chances of turning back only they didn't. They kept going because they were holding onto something."

DC319: Winter 1938 Retreats/Adjustments - charlesf (May 26, 2010, 3:45 pm) |
Hallo zusammen,
I'm afraid Michael just missed the deadline and
thus uses up one of his two six-hour grace periods. The only previous instance
of a player entering grace period territory was Nigs in Spring 1937, though -
now that both the USSR and Republican Spain have been eliminated - he won't be
needing any more grace periods anyway. In any case, please get your orders in on
time as I'd rather not fret about players missing deadlines.
While I devoted the fall's comment section to the
Republican cause, I've now chosen something suitably triumphalist for the
Nationalists to mark the occasion of Franco's junta being universally recognised
as Spain's government. In game terms this means of course that Spain's (yeah,
there's only one Spain now) 3 DPs may now be employed much as those of any other
great power since Franco's now joined the big league.
In regards to the adjucation it's perhaps worth
mentioning that Turkey could not make use of all her gained SCs due to merely
having three build-sites available. So the remaining two are effectively waived,
though I've chosen not to mark that in the orders section and won't do so either
whenever a similar case might occur.
Don't miss the colourful non-GM press further
below. Keep it coming, guys!
The Spring 1939 Moves are due NLT 6PM CET on Wednesday, 26 May.
Liebe Grüsse,
Charles

PRESS:
FROM TURKEY:
New Government - New Turkey?
Last week we followed the forming of
the new Government by Celal Bayar. And Today the new president of Turkey İsmet
İnönü made a speech concerning the new direction for the Turkish Republic. The
biggest part of the address was concerned with the expansion of the Turkish
borders. Indeed the last movements were quite extraordinarily vast and
aggressive. This let to the rise of the questions about friendship with other
nations. To this the second president gave his answer: |Let the nations jealous
of our might be our enemies. We cannot trust somebody who tries to judge our
Army before our intent. We are better served with destroying, whose who try to
count our strength. We will let them appreciate our strength in the most direct
way possible. Let these, who stand in our way tremble with fear. These who are
our true friends will accept us the way we are." The Masses converged in Ankara
before the Çankaya Köşkü cheered and drowned out the more cautious voices, like
the concerns of Mehmet Vehib Kaçi: |I don't think that, even the latest gains,
Turkey can fight and win the war on all sides. İnönü is making enemies left and
right. This is no way to fight a war. We will probably loose badly. I'd say even
before next year the gains will be undone and the revolution will be brewing
across the Republic." For the moment the cheering still prevails, but should the
armies be defeated, than the mood will change abruptly and maybe the president
will regret his decisions.
November 18, 1938.
PIC OF THE DAY: "For Spain - a great and free
one.", Nationalist propaganda poster. Head and shoulders of a soldier
wearing the Nationalist Falangist blue shirt and holding a Spanish flag aloft.
His helmet casts a shadow over his face as he looks up. The yoke and arrows
emblem of the Falange Española de las JONS [Spanish Fascist Party] is clearly
seen on the flag and also centre right of image.

Kind thanks for the reply Matthew. Mike Sims actually replied to me privately and pointed out an old forum thread that showed how to overcome the issues I was having. My Mac appeared to have it properly installed and loaded when in fact it was not yet fully installed as an application. The pointers also helped me figure out how to add new variants which I may not have been able to determine without it.
I am glad to be up and running. |

Hi folks,
Well, the end-of-game proposal has garnered unanimous support, so this spells the end of DC289. Congratulations to Pontus for the solo victory.
Thanks to everyone for a well-played game without a single NMR. End-of-game comments are welcome.
I'll wrap up the game page later this evening.
Cheers,

Congrats to Pontus. Turkey seemed to sneak up in this game as the dominate nation. I guess with most of us concentrating on France and Austria it allowed Turkey to grow without too much resistance. It's a good reminder that sometimes you have to drop your agenda and tactics for the big picture.

Congratulations to those who survived, but especially to Pontus/Chochem - the Balkans certainly lived up its reputation in this one, and he managed it better than any of us.
Personally, after a disastrous start, I was delighted to have survived 1901, never mind still be there (only just, may be, but still there) in 1908!
I hope we meet up again in the future.

Thanks for an exiting game guys. II got into it a little late and first round i was terrified that everyone where plotting against me. Then Austria decided to attack Russia without telling me which throw me into a lop and then Austria disappeared. I really liked our second Austria although he thought he was talking to Italy when he was talking to me in the beginning. Russia was no longer cooperative and austria was so I thought I'd lock that down and move forward into a long term Austria Turk alliance. I really thought that was the way to go all the way through. Then germany and Russia pulled a fast one and managed to keep us from moving into Russia. A great move that we completely missed. I now thought that moving forward would take too long so i made a deal with Russia and moved in on Austria instead. That gave me a chance to betray Italy and seal his
fate. I took a center or two from Austria and then made peace with him again.
Then russia turned on Germany i swooped Austria and moved in on Russia and where voted winner (which i don't really understand i thought Id be stopped at 17sc with Eng/germany holding the rest)
All in all a great game it was fun playing with all of you and Austria deserved a better faith.

I initiated the vote this time around because a Turkey win looked inevitable. If England, Germany and Russia joined together to push Turkey back then I'm sure that would have worked. But I'm not sure we would have had the trust to pull that off.

Congrats to Pontus. Turkey seemed to sneak up in this game as the dominate nation. I guess with most of us concentrating on France and Austria it allowed Turkey to grow without too much resistance. It's a good reminder that sometimes you have to drop your agenda and tactics for the big picture.

I agree with Mark on this one - I thought we had a decent chance at controlling Turkey about a year or so ago when I was advancing on the Med and Austria was almost out - then Russia teamed up with Turkey and turned against Germany. Not that I'm blaming you, John... well, ok I am. After that, I was pretty sure it was only a matter of time before Turkey would gobble up enough to win...
But very enjoyable to play!

TTP - Turkey's EOG thoughts - Numty (May 26, 2010, 6:59 am) |
Hi all,
First let me add my thanks to you Douglas for GMing the game.
I don’t agree that the map was hard to read though I do agree that the
ships where easily confused as we talked about before. The armies where
instantly recognisable by both colour and design and worked very well. The map
itself was very readable. The commentary was a breath of fresh air and helped
the game flow.
My initial plan was to side with Russia
while keeping Austria happy
till I was in a position to stab Austria
then sweep forward into Italy
after that play it by ear. Well that plan failed miserably almost as soon as it
was formulated due to a lack of communication on both my part and Russia’s.
I ended up in a position where my quick demise was extremely likely. After that
my only goal was survival and to hope that something popped up where I could
once again become a contender, although I didn’t think it likely.
There was one round where I was in a position to move on Austria and
cause a lot of damage to him. After a lot of deliberation I decided not to
strike for 2 reasons:
1. I required
allies to do this and I had not been communicating enough with anyone else
enough to pull it off.
2. (probably
the main reason) I liked Austria’s
style of play and communication.
Austria
Well
played, you seemed surprised that so many people were willing to work with you.
I am not surprised, on a personal level you were a pleasure to talk to and plan
with. On a strategic level I think you made few mistakes and had good timing.
Russia
First
off after my early successful removal of Austria
from Greece we had the
perfect opportunity to deal a crushing blow to Austria ensuring dominance in the
south. You chose to play it safe and not push, I can understand caution but I think
this was a strategic blunder. After that if you remember there was one fatal
move and a few emails that made working together difficult to say the least. To
recap that was the move when you assisted Austria into Bul. Afterwards we exchanged
a few emails in which you said that you didn’t feel that you had any reason
to try to mend our relationship, I think that time has shown that to be an error.
Secondly you chose to tell me that we could never work together, an even bigger
error. As far as I am concerned supporting Austria
and going to war with England
at the same time was a major strategic blunder since if you had not helped Austria both he and Italy would have been stuck in a
war with me with very little chance of any of us gaining ground. By assisting Austria you
ensured I would loose. Once I was dead who do you think would have been next?
As I explained at the time you could have stayed neutral and have avoided
fighting on two fronts if you didn’t want to fight in the south, the
second front being vs England.
So I was left with 3 real choices, convince Austria/Italy to leave me alone, convince
you to help me or convince Italy
to turn on Austria.
You had ruled out the second option. I deemed it unlikely Italy would turn on Austria
and any communication I sent suggesting this to Italy would probably be passed
on to Austria making it unlikely that Austria would leave me alone. The rest
was a logical progression.
Austria asked me why I was willing to support
him since he was the initial aggressor vs Turkey and the explanation was a
follows:
I
can happily forgive being stabbed if the stab makes sense, it is in the nature
of the game, and if you can’t forgive then you shouldn’t play dip.
I can not however easily forgive stabs that I regard as strategically wrong.
Add to that I thought you made several blunders and it doesn’t strike me
as a good idea to ally with someone whose strategy you regard as flawed.
France
Well
to you I feel I owe the biggest explanation as to my motives and moves. You
were right I should have attacked Austria. Unfortunately our timing
was off by a round. There was only really 1 window of opportunity for me in the
game to survive stabbing Austria
and I didn’t take it. You contacted me after that window had passed, when
it was favourable to you and no longer to me. The mistake I made was not
contacting you the previous round. I am of the opinion that if you are going to
stab/upset a player then you better makes sure it’s as close to a fatal
blow as possible or it will simply be a short term gain and you will probably
regret it in the long term. Add to that Austria was the only one who “seemed”
even remotely concerned with my survival even if it was as a pawn. On top of
that I was worried that if I helped you against Austria/Italy then I would be
replacing 3 stronger opponents with 1 extremely strong one, i.e. you.
Btw.
After the initial few rounds I wasn’t playing for a win, I was playing
for survival.
Italy
In
essence you were as much of a pawn of Austria as I was so logically we
should have worked together to get out from under the thumb of our “oppressor”
but how to do that? It’s so risky, so likely that any comments would find
there way back to Austria.
We both had our problems elsewhere and even if we had wanted to turn on Austria it
would have been hard. You had France
to worry about and I had Russia’s
enmity to deal with.
England/Germany
Well
we never really had much shared interests so not much here to say except, England I thought you played very well and Germany you had
similar problems to me and didn’t really have the opportunity to play
well, but you survived and got a draw.
All said and done I learnt a lot from that game and enjoyed
most of it. Thank you all for playing[Reply] |

Hi Jimmy,
yeah, I hadn't saved it properly. Discovered that
when reloading myself, but not knowing whether any of you actually use it I
didn't bother to resend it. Glad to see it's being missed. Realpolitik really is
an invaluable tool in both testing out various scenarios and also gives you
order text output you can use for submitting your orders to me. Besides,
flipping through the game history is quite interesting.
Talking Realpolitik, Dirk's having trouble
installing the programme on his Mac. Any fellow Mac users out there who might
help him out? With Windows installation is very straightforward, so I'm
surprised the same doesn't seem to be the case with em Apples.

I'd like to echo what everyone has said about the flavor text and role playing that Doug wrote, it was very enjoyable. I'm only sorry I didn't have more time to add little details about my nation. The map was a little dodgy, and it was easy to confuse mine and france's units.
I started out by making peace with everyone, which, was nice as far as things go, but it meant that off the bat I had to break the peace with someone. I wasn't sure who to work with, but France's rapid growth put my on edge, especially given his access to the Mediterranean. Although he wasn't too threatening, i figured it was only a matter of time before he wiped out Germany, and then came for me. I planned on nabbing Marsailles and maybe spain for builds, and then making nice so I could turn east and secure the Mediterranean for myself. After that though, things got messy. Since I was going after France I needed Austrian backing, and he seemed supportive, and even got me Greece. As things dragged on though, I wasn't getting anywhere with France, and I figured it was only a matter of time before Austria stabbed me. Unfortunately, I had so concentrated my forces on France that it would have taken me many turns to redeploy.
France sinking two of my ships it would have been the perfect time to redeploy, but alas, it was not to be, and a combination of some miscommunication, and a lot of stupidity on my part led me to miss this chance. After that I felt pretty isolated, given that I was vulnerable to an Austrian stab, and fighting France, my only two neighbors. England reached out, but I wasn't very optimistic about my future, and thus, about working together.
All in all, I very much enjoyed the variant, and liked making my own little empire, even if it was fairly similar to the standard Italy. Thanks you all for the enjoyable game, and I hope to have the pleasure of playing with you again sometime.

To all, I usually don't make closing comments but I'm
compelled to in this one (after reading this you may see why I don't make
closing comments).
To Doug, you have my compliments on a good job. I thought
you ran a good game. Pro's were your commentary and the fix times for turns,.Cons,
that map just is impossible to read (and I'm not the only one, poor Italy went at
least 2 years without a build he was entitled to). I'm not sure I'd play the variant
again and I certainly would never be Russia in it. He gives up his 4 SC
advantage.
To Austria,
you played a good game but you were aided by the ineptitude of your closest
players. I'd relish a rematch someday. Your prose in the beginning was quite
captivating but you waffled too long. If it hadn't been for your vassal Italy I'd have taken you and I really thought that
we would end with a Austria France draw ( with Germany and one of your vassals)..
To Italy
and Turkey,
I'd love to hear how your game plan was going to give you a win? What exactly
was the point of being Austria's
pawns forever? Any good strategy says that the minor player has to turn on
their protector sometime! I am really curious; did Austria have dirty pictures of you
to blackmail you?
England
my biggest mistake was not trusting Germany
early in the game and invading England
proper via the German offered convoy. If I had done that we could have eliminated you
at least on the western part of the board and I probably would have won or the
draw would not have been so inclusive, because the only way that Germany's
and my stalemate line was broken was because we didn't eliminate you.. However
once we allied, for the record, Dirk and I were very agreeable to have our
three countries in a draw against Austria. However when you turned
unreliable while I didn't get quite as upset as Dirk over our exchanges, I will
remember that you are an unreliable ally, not the type I care to play with
again unless it's hostilities from the start and trust me it will be.
German you played a good game, especially considering your opening
moves that left you no SC's within a defensive buffer. Its tough being Germany (and Austria); the edge countries are
easier, but still you did a great job and were a terrific ally. I never thought
to stab you even with the proffered opportunities by other players. I hope we
stay in touch in the "real world" and play again. BTW at some point I'd like to
send my daughter's resume to you for comment and if you ever expand to nyc, let
me know.
In conclusion, you know this game is a lot like woman (at
least until I got married). You are in a relationship and its fun at first and
then it becomes a drag and then you look for a way out. You swear off them for
a while and then memories fade and you get drawn back in. I'm out of here for a
while, but I'm sure I'll be back sometime after the memories fade.

Good Evening!
Ordinarily I'm quite an advocate for EOGs, but my memory is honestly quite flagging. So, yes I'll do an EOG, but it will be rather short and lacking a thorough chronological journal.
Thank you Douglas for hosting this variant -- I am a little sad that my "custom" empire happened to be Austria-shuffle-south, but it was still entertaining and being able to call myself "Yugoslavia", for all the good it pragmatically did, served to keep my attention quite well. I one day hope to run a game as smooth[ly] as yours.
I was flattered with how many players wanted to work with me, and genuinely seemed to follow through on the goal -- the exception naturally being post-Turkey Russia, but I DID open into Rumania, and things went pretty south after that... Honestly, I was planning on wiping Turkey out as soon as possible with Russian help -- his opening to Greece was, while quite a natural opening, rather threatening to my Balkan Empire. Russia, forgive my betrayal -- you held out til' the end, and forgive any unnecessary treachery on my part -- for me, half the fun is the con, not the end.
Now, I have been a small nation before a large one in past games and I understand, though many players say it "poor showmanship" or whatever, that the first and most satisfying reaction is to act however you damn well please, survival or not, just to prove that you DO have an effect on the game. To me, this is a fundamental concept necessary for "soft" conquering -- as long as a player feels that they have choices and input, and most importantly that you've GIVEN them this, they will likely follow you to the grave or until you REVOKE such freedom. Unfortunately for me, it was this second point that I did not tread upon quite hard enough and towards the end my Turkish "vassal" became a liability that I honestly could do nothing about.
I trusted him explicitly [barring that one scare], so it never came of much, although I do believe some of my later orders would've given him cause for concern -- perhaps rightly so, I can't honestly recall what my strategy was there. For what it's worth, thanks for sticking by me even though I could've been an easy stab at several points.
Italy, though I had initially quite determined that I would eliminate you with French assistance, a curious movement by Russia made my natural paranoia look for allies -- I kept telling France "one more season!", waving those perfect chances to bounce you for home centres, and eventually we fell into a perfect demilitarized peace -- I daresay we never had any misunderstanding [except maybe my arrogantly declared ship, I don't know]. Towards the end France and Germany had convinced me that an alliance with them was useful, and sadly that meant to had to go -- luckily, I never had to realize your end. Thanks for sticking with me for better or worse, and in essence serving as my navy.
France, I honestly began with the idea of an AF alliance taking the board. I found myself the weakest player at the start, and kept equivocating because I didn't want unnecessary risks -- and I'm sure you gave up on my wishy-washy self after a while. All the same, I quite enjoyed our communications -- I recall in our earlier exchanges I took liberties and expressed my ideas in prose too flowery for what was to be exterminating our neighbour. Fun, all the same -- thanks.
Germany, it was [ironically] your equivocation as you said that led to your stunted growth. I asked for assistance and you would always just sit it out, and eventually I determined [while being very wishy-washy myself] that I'd run my way through the alps.
England, we didn't interact much until the end, although we were entirely misaligned for my hypothetical solo, so I was a little loathe to trust you -- all the same, you helped me break the stalemate and, in theory, we could have ground our way through Franco-Germany. But, by that time the game had lost it's flare, and I thought I'd give stabbing you a half-hearted go. Sorry, for what it's worth.
I am first an foremost a player for the melodramatic -- I'm sure more than half of you realize that. Second, I play for the fun of conning, alliances, and, in general, communications: This ties in with the first. Thirdly, I play to win. And in this game, though I thought for a moment I was well on my way to a solo, I had lost the interesting exchanges, and my lazy attempts at stabbing didn't garner anything new. In my books, I had "won" my conditions when I had literally every [surviving] player on the board suggesting an alliance with me, the largest nation. Granted, a few of these offers were only to break a stalemate, but all the same I had a roaring good time for quite a while there. Thank you everyone for an entertaining game!
Any questions or comments, and I'll try my best to answer.
Hope to see you all on the battlefield again some time!-K.T.Yugoslavia

ha ha...well, from my side....MOST of it was in good fun
seriously your "own lack of strategic planning" drove me absolutely insane this game....when someones diplomacy is sending you one message but their moves on the board something TOTALLY OPPOSITE, it doesnt leave you many options!!!
But no worries, at least we somehow managed to salvage a draw out of it. Despite all the bad blood Id still look forward to another game with both you and Michael. It was never personal for me.
Congrats to Austria though....clearly head and shoulders deserved the board top this game.
Cheers Doug, nice variant, I'd certainly play it again.
