dc318 - Winter Blitz 2010 Spring 1908 results - z93blom (May 17, 2010, 1:31 pm) |
Blitzers,
Terribly sorry for the mishap with the draw proposals last few turns. Not that it would have mattered though since any draw proposal put forth would have failed.
We have Italy moving forward and taking over both Rumania and Bulgaria. Both defending Armies have been defeated, and with nowhere to turn to they are disbanded. Russia tries to retake Warsaw but is beaten back by the German defense.
Will we see a Europe united under the German flag, or will the combined Italy/German alliance hold? Stay tuned and see.

DC327 - start of Pericles game - evapollo88 (May 17, 2010, 10:30 am) |
Hello everyone,
I just wanted to say that I am very excited about playing this game. This map is one of my personal favorites (I am a classics major), and it looks like we have an awesome line-up here. I have been busy finishing my finals, and so have yet to extend personal welcome notes to everyone. I will have a lot more time later this week after I finish writing a paper for Greek history (I'll sell info on the background history if you give me centers. We can work out the details...) Hope everyone is doing well, and good luck!

After this brief introduction let me introduce myself. Name is Frank, bielf11 on DC, from The Netherlands. Some of you will know me from games I have played or GMed.On DC I have GMed several games from STD to oddities like Viking with Scorched Earth rules.
This is however my first go at Pericles.
I will schedule one major season (Spring, Fall) per week. Typically at the same day and time each week.Minor seasons and Winter adjustments usually will be due 48 hrs after adjudication.
I'll always try to send out the adjudication within a few hours after the deadline. I'm pretty strict with the deadlines but everyone's entitled to 2 grace periods.Once these are used any failures to submit orders before the deadline will be regarded as NMRs/NRRs/NBRs etc.
Now if anyone expects to have a problem making the deadline and you let me know before that turn starts, it won't count towards your grace periods. You can also ask me to extend the deadline beyond the regular periods, but again, I need to know before the turn starts.
Also, I will send out reminders approx. 24 hrs before the deadline.
Please start the subject line of your messages with DC327; it helps me distinguish between messages from various games and speedup the adjudication.
Any order I receive I will confirm with a message saying so. If you haven't received my confirmation, assume I haven't received your message. My adjudications include GIF files with the orders and results, as well as a RealPolitik file (for those that use RP).
I really welcome White and Gray Press to spice up the game; Black Press is strictly forbidden.
The deadline for the first Spring is Monday 24 May at 8pm GMT+1 (AMS time).
For those not familiar with Pericles now is the time to read about the Terrain Oddities in the Dipwiki.
Good luck and happy gaming

DC 306: Sengoku Rev6DP - Spring 1573 Deadline Remi... - Kenshi777 (May 17, 2010, 9:31 am) |
Hello again players, I'm back in town - hope you enjoyed your long
season for negotiations. Spring 1573 is due today at 5pm EST!
Please note that we have a player absence from the 20th through the
30th, so unfortunately, there will be a long break before the fall as
well. Apparently 1573 was an odd year, with 730 days instead of the
usual 365....or something.

A rum can retreat to ser, gal, ukr or otb.
John, when you make a decision send it to me or just broadcast it to the group. The official deadline is Monday at 9 pm, but I'll adjudicate early if John marks his retreat final.
Again, my apologies. It was late last night and I just missed it.

DC 298 spring 1919 Adjucation - untitled36 (May 17, 2010, 8:37 am) |
Apart from a couple repositioning moves by france on the british isle, the only moves that succeed this turn are in the east. Russia surrounds and destroys the marauding italian band in galcia, but Italy manages to seize Moscow in return. Hoping to defend the homeland, the unit stationed in norway rushes to st pete.
In other news, we are now officially the last round one game still running! I think we should try to outlast all the round one games for NEXT year's blitz too! By this point next year I think we'd be in 1971. What do you say?

Doesn't make a difference on the map, but I understand it might be important diplomatically. Just so you are all aware. It was an error on my side. I'm not sending out a new DPY unless someone sees a need. If anyone really wants one, I'll be happy to though!

DC302 Clarification - psychosis1973 (May 17, 2010, 3:51 am) |
I've received a couple of queries as to Italy's status in the game, given an NMR from him for Fall 1906 moves and also for Winter 1906 adjustments.
This *doesn't* place Italy in Civil Disorder...in my house rules, I note that civil disorders are caused by two consecutive NMRs. However, for the purposes of counting NMRs, Spring and Summer count as one season, and Fall, Autumn and Winter as another. To trigger the two consecutive rule, a player needs to miss a move submission in Spring/Summer and then again in Fall/Autumn/Winter (or Fall/Autumn/Winter and then again in Spring/Summer) - so an NMR in Spring and then the lack of a retreat in Summer only counts as one NMR. Or in the case of Italy recently, an NMR for Fall and then again for Winter only counts as one NMR.
Hope this makes sense. I'll acknowledge that this isn't 100% clear in my rules, but this rule is a fairly standard one across the DC site...
Upshot of this is, Italy isn't in civil disorder, as his previous NMR was for Spring 1905. However, if he misses Spring 1907 orders or any Summer 1907 retreats, then he will be placed in civil disorder.

Regardless whether he's regarded to be in CD or not, I think it's unfair to the other players to NMR. Worse, it shows no respect at all for two powers that have just been eliminated despite all their efforts to stay alive...

2010/5/17 Michael Thompson <psychosis(at)sky.com>

DC327 - start of Pericles game - bielf11 (May 16, 2010, 4:51 pm) |
Welcome everyone.
We're about to start another Pericles game. The third on DC. And a look at the player list shows it will be a very interesting one.
The powers were assigned used a proven and totally random method (with the help of one of my daughters):

All,Sorry for the delay of about 24 hours. Because of that, it doesn't really make sense to do a Monday Spring 02 deadline. Therefore, since it is a Saturday night and I don't know who will get to check email before Monday, let's set Spring deadline for Thursday the 20th at 6pm CST. That will get us back on track a bit I think but still allow for negotiation.
Builds are as follows:
Austria: Build A ViennaBuild A Trieste
England: Build F Edinburgh
France: Build A ParisBuild A Marseilles
Germany: Build F Berlin
Italy: Build F Naples
Russia: Build F St Petersburg(sc)Build A Warsaw
Turkey: Build F Smyrna

Good morning everyone,
Thank you all for getting orders in before the deadline. There was a lot of movement this turn! As you can tell from the orders, there were a lot of failed moves and bounces. The French hold their position anticipating an attack that never occurred. The Italians are in a tight spot, with one of their only two supply centers under Austrian control. The Turks mobilize and continue to deny any Russian move. Germany and England stay put for the most part. Stay tuned to find out how this all plays out this fall!

dc308 - Fall 1904 Results - z93blom (May 15, 2010, 4:56 am) |
Gentlemen,
Apologies for the late adjudication. Here it is anyways. France gets beaten back from the Germany homeland by a concerted attack from Italy/Austria. Other than that we see movement, but not a lot of true action. We also see the Turkish government being placed in Civil Disorder. This means that any units that are dislodged from now on will automatically disband. I will not seek a replacement player.
Please get in the habit of turning in preliminary orders.
We are in need of a retreat:French A Munich can retreat to Ruhr, Kiel or OTB.
You can also start thinking about the builds/disbands that are due after that:Austria: Build 1France: Build 1 (if the retreat is OTB)Italy: Build 2Russia: Remove 1
Turkey: Remove 1
You can start sending in the adjustments immediately (conditional if you want to depending on the retreat)
Next turn: Autumn 1904 Retreats
Next Deadline: Monday, 17th of May, 18:00 GMT (6PM) (Can be adjudicated early).
Upcoming turn: Winter 1904 Adjustments
Upcoming Deadline (preliminary): Wednesday, 19th of May, 18:00 GMT (6PM).

Thought for new players - txurce (May 15, 2010, 1:44 am) |
Sean,
Thanks for a very encouraging editorial on why there's a benefit to playing out poor positions. I could add that there is also the issue of respect for the investment of time and effort by the other players. But in considering your perspective - the playing out of a losing position as an educational experience - I thought of the EOG statement I just wrote for DC261. My hand grew steadily worse the entire game... and it was a long, long game. Much to my surprise, I had about as many "fun" moments playing it out as I do in a winning effort.
Jorge[Reply] |
DC261 - German EOG - txurce (May 15, 2010, 1:35 am) |
Some games just don't work out the way you imagined. I replaced the original German leader early on, based on the map posted on the game site. I quickly found out that the map was wrong, and the position that had attracted me wasn't there.
My story of the rest of the game dovetails with my failure to convince first Russia and then France - both seemingly new to PBEM Diplomacy - that they were going to be stabbed by Austria and Italy. A/I won those diplomatic battles, and eventually won the game. Russia and particularly France showed good game traits at different times, but were undone, in my opinion, by simple lack of game experience. Russia didn't see that turning against me left him far more exposed than if he had gone against Russia. And I had no idea why he chose to put his last center under the protection of Austria's ally instead of England, who actually needed him. Italy knocked him off a turn or two later.
At this point it was clear to me that Austria and Italy, both strong veteran players, were joined at the hip and would be tough to stop. I made a couple of efforts to win over their French ally, but he broke each of our agreements. Afterward he told me that he was focused on taking back Belgium, which my predecessor had apparently taken from him. He also felt he had no reason to switch sides, which was reasonable enough. There was little that England and I could do to check the AFI triple alliance. Eventually the hopelessness of our situation became obvious enough that I asked France why his alliance didn't propose a three-way draw. He said they had no clear answer.
The answer was obvious to me: they were going to stab him as soon as it was safe to do so. France chose to hope for the best, which is a common enough mistake, and especially for an inexperienced player. It's hard to reverse direction without a smoking gun - even if the gun is aimed in your general direction. As soon as their advance reached a point from which a stab made victory certain, Italy stabbed him. France then joined England and me, Catching A/I off-guard a couple of times gave us a few extra years and a glimmer of hope. just not enough.
This game was frustrating in many ways, but also educational. In reviewing why I failed to win over either Russia or France when it would have made a difference, I re-tuned my diplomatic antenna for future games. And by being forced to play a losing, defensive game for several months, I had to learn to take pleasure in successful tactics, even as the odds against their really paying off grew progressively worse. In the end, I think I came out of it a better Diplomacy player. And I actually had fun doing it.
