dc285: The preparation and serving of Carthage (dc309) sgttodd Apr 29, 11:57 am |
There's a little voice in me, with a Yiddish accent, that sounds like my grandmother, and always says things like "Vhatch your tucas, you're leaving it out vhere za dog can bite it."
I should listen to that voice - cause it always turns out to be right, but yet I don't, and I get my tucas bit.
Case in point - this game.
I wanted to ally with Rome. It looked to me (Carthage) like the best bet and most workable arrangement. Yeah, it involved a little bit of retrograde motion to secure the Western Med, but that could be done almost at leisure as the main body of phalanx and fleets headed east.
But Rome didn't talk much, and by contrast, Egypt wouldn't shut up. He was like a used car salesman, and despite the warnings of my inner Yid, I bought the jalopy.
It seemed to be going well, then there came a time when continuing the push into Europe required leaving the house unguarded. Here's where you either trust or don't trust your neighbors. I played through various scenarios in RW and opted to trust my neighbor and make the push. It meant gaining a position to subdue Rome and be ready to face Persia in the North if my "ally" decided to make the 3-way a 2-way. The push was as fancy a set of maneuvers as one could manage in this game, and I was sure the Roman gulped when the results hit his email box. For sure, I was all smiles. Ah, those heady days.
Back to business and looking ahead, I "wargamed" out the situation in RW and the realization that Egypt could sweep west in two moves and pretty much do me in and there was literally nothing I could do about it - made ME gulp. I confronted him, got jokes in reply, took that as a "Yep, I'm doing just that" and tried to recall the far flung legions home to defend the realm. Too late. The doors just fell off that jalopy I bought.
Egypt swept in like the Christmas tsunami. Rome wasn't interested in a truce, even though it was obvious he was next on the menu. I'm sure he felt I stabbed him and was happy to see me get mine. I spent the last turns fighting a guerrilla war, more against Rome, oddly, than Egypt. I though of begging Persia for help - he could make Egypt experience my pain and had a lot to gain by it, but something told me it wouldn't fly, so I didn't. It was all but over and Rome was doomed as well with Persia riding across the North after the demise of Greece. In the end, a "survival" is better than an "elimination" so I voted for the draw.
Lessons have been learned and I will always, from now on, listen to my inner Yid.

1648 091010: Fall 1657 Moves - charlesf (Apr 28, 2010, 7:16 pm) |
Hallo zusammen,
this season marking the end of the Lord Protector's
Russian adventure. Clearly puritanism hasn't caught on in the Russias. Perhaps
zealous Jesuits sent out from Poland shall fare better with the Russia's
recalcitrant peasantry, intransigent clergy and stuffy boyars?
The English proselytisers have left utterly disillusioned...
Talking of religious affairs, the call of the
muezzin can now even be heard in the Eternal City and the Pope has recognised
the Sultan as his protector.
And what about the champion of Lutheranism?
Sweden's feeling the squeeze in her corner of Germany. A whopping 86%
of key territories (i.e. SCs) within the Empire are now under Catholic rule. If
that ain't the mark of the counterreformation...
The Winter 1657 deadline shall
follow on 30 April, 6 PM CET.
Liebe Grüsse,
Charles

DC319: Winter 1936 Retreats/Adjustments - charlesf (Apr 28, 2010, 5:25 pm) |
Hallo
zusammen,
Europe's statesmen for the most part appear to be
more interested in opening their pockets for new planes, tanks and artillery
pieces. Submarines, cruisers, battleships are currently second and third
priorities in the powers' rearmament plans. Almost as if they all agreed on
renewing the Washington Treaty of 1922 which limited naval
rearmament...
BTW, should you be interested in learning more
about the history of the times the game covers, let me recommend Richard Overy's
"The Road to War". It's a very readable one-volume history that devotes a
chapter to every power featured in the game (other than Turkey, which wasn't
really considered a great power, albeit a significant regional player). I
personally find my enjoyment of a given (war)game rises when knowing a little
more about the topic it covers. The relevant chapters of Paul Kennedy's seminal
"Rise and Fall of the Great Powers" also makes for a good companion read to the
game, since it appraises the strengths and weaknesses of the great powers
(albeit Poland, not universally recognised as a great power, and Turkey, not
recognised as a great power by anyone at the time) sadly are left out of that
account.
I'm currently rereading Roman Debecki's "The
Foreign Policy of Poland 1919-1939". Has its biases as the author himself
belonged to the Polish diplomatic corps at the time, but I find it most
interesting to consider Poland's very ambitious foreign policy schemes. Gives
rise to interesting what-ifs...
I'm musing how one might rate the respective
leaders of the time were they diplomacy players. Mussolini would probably get an
F in my book. I think it was Paul Kennedy who described him as a "strategic
liability of the first order". Kinda the erratic and inept sucker you'd probably
finish off quickly in a Diplomacy tournament.
Poland's Jozef Beck (actually only the foreign
minister, but he was wholly in charge of foreign affairs - quite unusual an
arrangement) strikes me as being little better. Kinda your "chainsaw player" who
manages to get on everyone's nerves. Greedy (see Munich Crisis) and myopic.
Universally disliked by Europe's statesmen - never a good mark in a Dipper! I
guess an E is in order.
Chamberlain... Arguably too maligned by the general
public. He tends to get a friendly treatment from present-day historians.
Appeasement really was the only course Britain could follow and he wasn't the
naive and cowardly sucker his detractor made him out to be. His basic strategy
was pretty sound, making concessions as he swiftened Britain's pace of
rearmament and rallied the nation and commonwealth. But on diplomatic tactics
and implementation... Not so great. D.
Daladier... He operated under severe contraints and
showed considerable resolve in harnessing French strength for war and got the
Brits to finally make a continental commitment. C.
Stalin... Hm, he played Roosevelt masterfully. But
he gravely miscalculated with the German-Soviet Pact, displaying a dictator's
characteristic avarice. Didn't see the biggest and most obvious stab in historiy
coming. C
Hitler... A reckless gambler. But achieved
diplomatic stunning successes in the 30s. Good at charming or bullying people,
as required in a given diplomatic situation. Too easy diplomatic victories made
him however overconfident and that contributed to him miscalculating the
situation in September 1939, leading to the general war yet didn't (just yet)
want. Certainly a man of considerable ability, but such a diplo-style probably
is going to "outstay its welcome". Kinda scorched earth mentality brought to the
diplomatic arena. C.
Atatürk... Not only a great military leader, but
was able to reconcile with his erstwhile Greek foes and extricate territorial
concessions from France. Was a greatly respected figure in the diplomatic arena,
always a big plus. Got what he wanted on the Straits Question. I'll give him an
A, cuz I gotta give the top grade to somebody. :p
Well, excuse my rambling... What do you think of
those very tentative ratings of those leaders' diplomatic skill?
Anyway, the Spring 1937 Moves prelims are
due NLT 6PM CET on Saturday, 1 May.
Let's see what the new year holds for us
all!
Liebe Grüsse,
Charles

DC 285 Draw Results - Blueraider0 (Apr 28, 2010, 2:42 pm) |
Gentlemen,
When, in the Course of Ancient human events, it becomes necessary for four peoples (one being eradicated) to dissolve the political bands which have seperated them from each other, and to assume (among the powers of the earth) a decent respect of the opinions of mankind, it is required that they should declare the causes which impel them to the binding.
We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all Powers are created equal, that they are endowed by their GM with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Supply Depots. Blah blah blah, we hereby proclaim the establishment of the Egyptian/Persian utopia, wherein we will all worship cats and very fancy rugs. Hooray!
Yep, you guessed it. We have a draw! Congratulations to Mike and Adam on the results. I'll submit them to DC and resolve this game. My apologies for never being able to post maps on the website, I know that was an inconvenience. If you have any other criticisms or advice on how to improve my GMing, now is the time to say so - I'm always looking to improve my playing-God abilities.
EOG statements are welcome.
Thanks for playing, and take care!

FLWC: Nomads - FuzzyLogic (Apr 28, 2010, 1:29 pm) |
Hey all,
We have a new Nomad leader! Unifying those random wanderers from around the world will now be Jay North - Everyone say "Hi, Jay North". Word has it he comes from a strong Nomadic background, and has roamed at least two major deserts, three savannahs, and one great plain. His credentials certainly fit the bill. Deadline will now be Tuesday, to give our newcomer a chance to orient himself - track the sun, the stars, find an oasis, and well, whatever else Nomads do!
Tuesday, 5/4. 3pm Central.
Enjoy,

Nomads: Jay North jnatdelta(at)yahoo.com
Greetings!
And welcome to this, the three-hundred and third game of Diplomaticcorp Diplomacy. This game shall henceforth be known as “Furry Little Woodland Creatures”, in honor of the FLWC - standing up for the rights of little (and furry) woodland creatures all throughout the Haven world. With a strong presence in this game the FLWC will surely keep a watchful eye on the progress.
I’m glad you came out to play this! I spend a lot of time thinking of Diplomacy variants and how to make them interesting and challenging… I know most of you - some have been past opponents in complex games, others are running incredibly tough Winter Blitz games, some are regulars that have been playing at dc since the early years… and a few are completely new. All of you have had at least some sort of good impression on me regarding your diplomatic abilities to be invited to the game!
Who am I? (aside from some guy that designs mysteriously ominous looking maps?) Well most of you probly already know me. But for those who don’t, I’m one of the moderators here at dc, and have been playing Dip for 5 or 6 years. I got hooked early on making fantasy variants, and this one is by far my greatest concoction. It took months of work to get it just right so hopefully you find it enjoyable. I live in Lisle, IL (a small suburb of Chicago) w my wife and 3 little kids… I do network administration and web design work for a living. (intros are welcome from all – we’re going to be here a while!)
Keep in mind I tend to run a consistent and predictable game. If I say results are going to be out, chances are they will be so within a short time after the deadline. Thus, if you don’t get moves in on time you are subject to a typical NMR (no moves received) in which all your units will hold. These have a funny way of turning the game upside down unpredictably so if you don’t want to find your race suddenly in chaos and regrouping just to stay alive, use prelims. Use them all the time. Consistently using prelims is the best Dip skill you can ever learn. (right after lying, cheating, stealing, plotting, misdirecting, evading, … )
So what are we waiting for? Who are you playing? Find out now!
If any of you don’t have a “Location” on the website, feel free to update that (or let me know and I can) – it’s always fun to know where your enemies are playing from).

(DC 324) A Stab in the Dark - Reminder & Answers t... - Corrino (Apr 28, 2010, 6:44 am) |
Players,
Reminder that our first deadline is in about 12 hours. I have 5-1/2 sets of orders submitted. I will adjudicate as quickly after the deadline as I can. We have a short turn-around to Fall this year, so please consider ahead of time whether you have any possible retreats and be prepared to send them in promptly. Thanks.
Glad to hear everyone is enjoying -- or is that agonizing over? -- the process of placing their first units. I'd like to tell you that it gets easier after this turn, but that would be a lie. Well, unit placement gets easier since it goes back to restricting you to your home SC, but the rest of the game gets harder. Heh, heh, heh.
Some answers to questions asked about initial placement.
1. Finland - Neutral. I know it looks Russian on our RP maps, but common sense and a quick consult with my Stab! guru confirms that allowing a Russian unit to start in Finland is just too big an advantage. Sorry, Tsar.
2. Piedmont - Italian
3. Tyrolia - Austrian
4. North Sea - Neutral. There are some games that let England start out here. This isn't one of them.
Any more ambiguities? Just ask me.
Cheers,
Chris

DC 298 EoG proposal - chknbrstl (Apr 27, 2010, 10:43 pm) |
Hi Guys.
Back from a few days in Warsaw, but from Thursday on until
Monday (Tuesday) I’ll be back on the road. First the UK, then onto
Frankfurt (or Cologne), a stop in JFK on Monday / Tuesday(?) and then hopefully
home. A Rio trip is slated for Tuesday, but I’m hoping someone else
can take that one out. Needless to say I’m bouncing around more
than I could have expected two months ago. Please accept my apologies,
but I need to make hay while the sun shines. If it’s all right with
John I will tender a infinite yes vote to any DIAS at any time...

Ok, The two proposals
are a F/I/R and a DIAS. Also, the DC people say: "Any country that
has recorded an NMR for the last 4 consecutive spring or fall adjudications
will automatically vote YES on any EGP." This supercedes the other ruling
about Civil disorder. So if England continues to NMR, you have to
wait until spring 1918, or until his elimination, I think.
Now of course, England may jump in at any time, so there it that. And
also, don't take me as saying England is the only block to any
draws. I make no comment on whether the draw would have succeeded or
failed had it not been for England. Just so that's clear.

Hey all,
England is a no show again. I also received a couple end game proposals,
but there was some confusion over one of them, so I am in contact with
that player and will let you know the result.
A couple notes about end game proposals, since I'm sure you are
wondering. According to the default House rules for the DC site
(which I am following), less inclusive draws take precedence over more
inclusive draws, so if a E/F draw and a DIAS were both proposed and
both passed, the E/F draw would be the actual result. Also, since the
last vote was at least partially sabatoged by an NMR, I thought I'd expound on
that a bit. The DC house rules place a country in Civil Disorder after
NMRing for two consecutive major seasons. If a country is in CD and does
not vote on a proposal, but everyone else votes yes, then the draw/concession
will pass. I'm going to double check some of this with the DC people, but
I think that means that if England is a no show in the fall, all draws will
still fail, but if he is a no show in the spring his lack of voting would not
count against any draw proposals.

No official explanations were provided but a source at the Italian court told us that western diplomats fear the moment they are introduced to the 17 wives of the Pasha. It is hard enough to remember the name of the spouse of the european leaders, but seventeen? And to also remember their ranking, so as not to insult the wives and the Pasha? But even if a diplomat would have the skills to remember all this, there is still the nightmare of having to come up with the proper gift for each of them."
"Italian strike is over
The empire-wide strike that engulfed Italy last Spring seems to be over. We have received reports of troop movements throughout the Mediterannean and the Balkan. It doesn't say whether the troops are moving away from or returning to their motherland but there is definitely an increase of activity near the Alps."
"French export of sardines has tripled
Recently shiploads of canned sardines were seen leaving Brest. The containers were all marked Norway and St Petersburg. The crews seemed to be mixed French and Russian. Surprisingly each ship had a group of heavily-armed officers on board. Could they be expecting trouble along the way?"
"Oktober Festen reinstated
The famous Oktober Festen in Munich will be reinstated. This has been declared by the German Chancellor after the troops had called out victory. Since the French had taken Munich they had tried to close down many of the breweries that Munich is so well-known for. Many of these breweries had continued underground and are now restoring their business."

Deep in his bunker under the troubled Bosphorous, the Pasha is awakened from a watery sleep by his third wife, bearing a silver serving tray with the foreign newspapers and pot of strong black coffee.
"Al-Lah!", he suddenly cries in anger, "The Italians declared another Spring holiday, and why was I not informed of this!", he snaps, spilling hot coffee over his journals.
"But Great One, the Austrian emperor is a drunk and the Russian peasants do nothing but demand the return of their caviar farms," purrs wife number two. "How are we to know of these things?"
"So I must rely on three day-old editions of Der Spiegel, while my armies march to and fro and my mighty fleets do nothing but make traffic jams in the Mediterranean?!", roars the Pasha.
"But Great One, all Asia is ours. Why must we needs worry about the uncultured barbarians to the west?" quivers wife number seven.
"Ah, my wise young kitten, this also too is true." reflects the Pasha. "Quickly, if the emperor has left us any, send two more cases of that awful Greek Ouzo to the French ambassador, with a minstrel to sing praises of their greatness."
"Also be sure to mention that the photographs of Marshal Grenouille in Berlin came out splendidly", he adds, holding up the front page of Der Spiegel.
"And Great One, what of the starving Russian peasants?", weeps wife number five.
"Send them a bottle of olives and tell them they'll just have to make do with salmon.", he mutters, with a dismissive wave of his hand. "Now, peel me another grape, and order the fleet to circle around the Greek islands once again."
"Of course, oh Great One!" seventeen voices chorus together.[Reply] |

"It's like in the great stories, Mr. Frodo. The ones that really mattered. Full of darkness and danger they were. and sometimes you didn't want to know the end because how could the end be happy? How could the world go back to the way it was when so much bad had happened? But in the end, it's only a passing thing. The shadow, even the darkness must pass. A new day will come. And when the sun shines it will shine out the clearer. Those were the stories that stayed with you - That meant something. Even if you were too small to understand why. But I think, Mr. Frodo, I do understand. I know now. Folk in those stories had lots of chances of turning back only they didn't. They kept going because they were holding onto something."
"What are we holding onto, Sam?"
"That there's some good in this world, Mr. Frodo. And it's worth fighting for."[Reply] |
