1648 091010: Summer 1655 Retreats - charlesf   (Mar 24, 2010, 4:42 pm)
Hi guys,

from what I gather, Jorge has communicated to you players separately his resigning from the game. He cited in his correspondence with me his dissatisfaction over Abo/Lake Ladoga.

Now, the current variant rules do state that Ingria works much as Denmark in Standard Diplomacy. That logically also entails that Abo functions much the same as Sweden does in Standard.

Hence, there are no coastal specifications for Abo on the big map I sent to all players upon starting the game. Realpolitik's adjucation output equally expressly does not list any coasts for Abo as a careful reading of the fall adjucation shows.

I recognise that the variant rules would benefit from a more explicit statement beyond pointing to the Denmark analogy. For what is obvious to a designer may not be to playtesters (a frequent phenomenon in the rules-writing process). Actually, pointing out such room for improvement is indeed to a large extent what playtesting's about and my variants have benefited from such helpful playtester input. I regret Jorge plainly doesn't share that outlook.

Jorge has equally reproached me for not clarifying this situation to him beforehand. However, as it so happens I did actually note at least once in a mail to him prior to game-start that:

"Systematically, [the addition of Lake Ladoga as a space] means that Karelia will have two coasts, whereas Abo will still only have one (much as Standard's Sweden despite a canal space touching it in the middle)."

I'm sorry Jorge no longer remembered that. In light of the extensive variant design discussions Jorge has participated in in the past, I was not aware of his erroneous assumption/lapse of memory. Otherwise I would have of course again stressed that point in my communications to him, much as I notify any player whenever I notice such an issue. I don't spot all such issues, but I do try.

Suffice to say that I consider these illegitimate grounds for abandoning a game and am sorely disappointed.

Now, this means I shall seek a Polish replacement. Once I've sent out this summer adjucation, I shall immediately contact DC's replacement list and advertise the position more generally on the site. Lets hope we shall have a replacement before long. As soon as a replacement has materialised, I shall set a new deadline that affords the new Pole sufficient time to negotiate.

My hope is we'll be back on track before to long.

Cheers,

Charles

Charles,
As I mentioned in my previous email, I use the DC Variants page for descriptions.  It includes a very detailed point about Ingria, never mentioning Denmark or Standard Dip:
"Ingria is a canal province (much as Copenhagen), thus allowing units to move from Abo, Lake Ladoga, the Gulf of Bothnia, Novgorod (South Coast) and Riga to Ingria (and vice versa). The River Neva is shown on the map to indicate this."

Basically, if an analogy to Standard is to be made, it should be to CON, not to DEN.  Thus CON allows units to pass through, but BUL has coasts.

I asked this question in a previous email and have not received an answer:  If Abo has no coasts, then it cannot force a break in Ing's coasts either (ala Swe / Den in Standard).  If Ing has no coasts, what the heck does it need a Canal for????  I have never seen a Dip board produced with such a flagrant redundancy built in.  The existence of the canal obviously shows that the designers made Ing with separate coasts.... and thus Abo must have separate coasts as well.

As a replacement player, I never received the large map or the pre-game description emails.  So I can only go by what I find on the DC website.

Mike,

I recognise and wrote that Abo's character ought to be further explained in the variant rules. I rely on playtesters to point out what points need to be further specified/clarified. As a designer, one tends to be less aware of what isn't obvious since one's too close to the design. Catching these shortcomings is part of what one hopes to achieve with a playtest and I'm grateful to those who've contributed to the improvement of the variant in this manner.

Yes, I got the nomenclature wrong. I meant Denmark. Thanks for pointing that out.

Mike, Ingria has a canal (well, actually the river Neva) flowing through it. Much as say the Kaiser-Wilhelm-Canal runs through Kiel in Standard, or the Suez Canal runs through Suez in the 1900 variant. Neither space is bicoastal in nature. So I don't understand your point in the least.

As a replacement player, I never received the large map or the pre-game description emails. So I can only go by what I find on the DC website.

My bad. I've now sent it to you.

My point is this: If Ing is bi-coastal, what breaks it's coastline?
Abo, right? Therefore, Abo MUST be bi-coastal as well.

In the case of Kiel & Denmark, Denmark is not bi-coastal because of
its *other* connection, the one to Sweden. That connection is
considered 'fleet passable' and thus both Sweden and Denmark have
single coastlines. However, IF that connection was more solid and
Sweden became bi-coastal, then Denmark would also be bi-coastal,
because the canal runs inside of Kiel.

Thus, the Abo/Ing connection is the same thing. Ing contains the
canal to allow it to act as a single coast province, it's coast breaks
being Abo and whatever is south of it (map not open right now). But
that land connection with Abo **prevents Abo from being single
coastal**!!!

If you claim that Abo is single-coastal, then the border between Ing &
Abo becomes 'fleet passable' (like Den & Swe). So Ing becomes single
coastal ---- and thus no need for the canal.

It's just logic. Smile

DC302 Winter 1902 adjustments - psychosis1973   (Mar 24, 2010, 4:10 pm)
Winter 1902 adjustments - and fleets are order of the day, with four raised across Europe. Unfortunately, Austria didn't get his disband in, so, per my house rules, I've disbanded his fleet in Albania, as the only force he had not in a home centre. This counts as a NMR by Austria.

Spring 1903 deadline is Monday 29th March at 2100 GMGT

Austria:
Remove F Albania

England:
Build F Edinburgh
Build A London

France:
Build F Brest

Germany:
Build F Kiel

Turkey:
Build F Smyrna

Hello everyone. As you may have heard, Alex has come down with a flu and is abdicating his Italian thrown. Thanks for playing Alex, hope you enjoyed the game, and get better soon!

Taking over Italy is the one and only Michael Sims! Welcome Mike, glad to have you. With a new player in the mix, I will extend the deadline to Monday, March 29th, 9:00pm EST

I'm sorry for those of you who didn't have any builds and are ready to go, but I just want to make a smooth transition. Don't get sloppy on me now with the deadlines, I want everyone to get them in on time so that I don't need to track down anybody.

And Mike, if you have any questions on my rules let me know. One grace period per person.

Have a good rest of your week, and get those orders in. And if you had already sent me orders, if you could resend them that would help me out greatly. Thanks!

I wanted to wait until the GM made it official...because

P.S. - Wait. How do we know that this isn't a cheap theatrical trick?
How do we know that Mike isn't really Maslow in disguise?

Only one way to be sure...Mike...and I am going to need you to trust me on this...I need to get one of my armies to Tuscany. Tell you what...Let me have Venice in the Spring and then I will move to TUS

And a chaotic spring it was.

You are all definitely awake after that long winter sleep that some of you had. That is a good thing, this is the most unique game I've ever been a part of, and I hope you are all enjoying it and not getting too upset with whatever may be happening. Lots of movement occured this turn, so lets just jump right to the good stuff, shall we? I know none of you really want to hear my commentary, so just skip right over this if you want. The Italians, under new leadership, take a step backward and hold up on the Italian penninsula under fire from the Austrians and Turks. The Austrians devote full force to their western border, while the Turks quietly pick off their SCs from behind with no opposition. The Russians retreat and try to take back Red Square. While the Russians try to take back a home center, the Germans successfully take back Munich from the French, and grab the French capital in the process. While the Germans steal two French SCs, the Brits swap places with them in Brest. How will all of this unfold? Find out this fall. Here are the details:

DC317; Welcome - packrat   (Mar 23, 2010, 10:05 pm)
Greg,
In an effort to improve relations between our two countries I would be more than happy
to annex your supply centers until your workload eases up a bit. Once things are more
manageable I would, of course, cede them back over to you.

No need for thanks, just doing my part to help a neighbor.

I just wanted to apologize for my lack of alacrity in getting the opening salutations to everyone. The start time has coincided with a rather busy patch, but, do not fear, it shall not be a general condition for this general. I shall have time soon to send my greetings and I look forward to working with all of you (in the spirit of optimistic generalization). Hope all is well with all,

SUPER IMPORTANT NOTES;

Please please copy your orders to orders-at-diplomaticcorp.com (orders-at-diplomaticcorp.com) EVERY time. This allows the Moderators to step in and run games as needed if last minute issues prevent me from keeping a game on track (due to the fast deadlines). IF YOU DO NOT COPY YOUR ORDERS HERE and a Mod has to run a game, you run the risk of an NMR!
Please note that Fall retreats and Winter builds are combined into one turn! You may make builds conditional on retreats but they are done with ONE deadline.

Please put "DC317; (country)" in your subject line at a minimum. This will facilitate me being able to find your orders. If you are in the habit of hitting the reply, PLEASE take the time to change the subject line and delete the body of the previous message. If I am unable to find your orders, you run the risk of an NMR and the previous season will NOT be redone!

You know the rules, same as from Round 1 (Spring Orders - Mondays, Retreat Orders [if necessary] - Tuesdays, Fall Orders - Thursdays, Retreat Orders [if necessary] AND Builds/Disband Orders - Fridays). I will do automatic retreats if only one retreat is available to facilitate play. No reminders of the Deadlines will be provided so be sure to get your orders in as soon as possible. I highly advise submitting preliminary.

If you are in the habit of using abbreviations, please use the standard 3-letter abbreviations. I will not NMR a unit if I can decipher what you wanted (ie F Liv-NAO will be read as F Liverpool to North Atlantic Ocean not F Livonia to NAO). Also, I will not NMR a unit if you fail to put a unit on the orders (ie Liv-NAO). However, (there are some rules that cannot be gotten around) if a fleet can move to a country with more than one coast line and you fail to list which coast, the unit will not move due to the confusion (ie F MAO - Spa will cause the movement to fail due to the lack of coastal distinction). All standard stuff, just a quick posting here to let you know that I will be as lenient as possible. If I have not covered something and you have any questions, please ask.

Also, I will not be posting any comments on the Game. I do not know how much might have been missed if a GM had not commented on it in his monologue; therefore, I do not post comments. I will try to not influence the game in anyway. Though, I am human; I too make mistakes. When mistakes happen, you need to let me know as soon as possible so that I can make corrections. If you do not make me aware of the error and the game proceeds to the next season, the deed is done and no correction can be made.

If you have made it this far, thank you for patiently reading all that I have for you. I will not be as long winded during the game. Best of luck to all of you in Round 2 of Winter Blitz 2010! Let the Diplomacy begin!

Final Orders for Spring 1901 are due Monday, March 29 by 24:00 hrs GMT.

1648 091010: Spring 1655 Moves - charlesf   (Mar 23, 2010, 6:38 pm)
Hallo zusammen,

I'm afraid two issues prevented me from publishing results yesterday. Mike's only got back from his holiday after the deadline had run its course and he hadn't sent me a set of orders prior to leaving. Dirk and Harvey also missed the deadline yesterday. Perhaps I ought to have been more vigilant, yet being away over the weekend prevented me from doing so.

Now, in light of the deadline being set closely after Mike's EXPECTED return (the 20th), but as it turns out being in conflict with his ACTUAL return two days later, I've now decided to treat matters as though the deadline had been today, the 23rd. I recognise this is less than ideal, but hope that such "lenience before justice" serves everyone best. I'd rather not see this game's generally reliable crew being changed on account of these circumstances. Yet since this judgement call of mine somewhat departs from my stated house rules practice, I felt compelled to disclose these matters to all. Should anyone wish to appeal this decision of mine as you have every right to do, let me know and I shall happily refer the matter to the DC big-whigs for their final ruling.

Ah well... What happened on the board? Well, Novgorod fell into the hands of the Roundheads and the Austrians made it the the shores of the North Sea. Shall these gains be kept this fall...?

England's retreat is due 24 March, 6 PM CET.

Liebe Grüsse,

Charles

We're just chugging along here, everything went great for every player this round!

Well... except for maybe Rome, who failed to capture Vindabona...
...or Carthage, who failed to capture Massilia. Or even Persia, whose invasion was rebuffed at Galatia.
For that matter, the Egyptian expansion to the Gulf of Tacape and the Sahara failed too.
And the Greeks - tho capturing 3 - lose Macedonia.

Tho some of you get to build... (go figure)

DC302 Fall 1902 moves - psychosis1973   (Mar 23, 2010, 12:47 pm)
Chaps

Quick note to let you all know that England has chosen to disband his army in Belguim rather than retreat to Picardy. This gives England two builds to make. I won't be able to generate a revised map prior to the original adjustments deadline, so you'll just have to imagine the previous map without an English army in Picardy. Squint if you need to!

Deadline for all winter adjustments remains 2100 GMT tomorrow, Wednesday 24th March. Those submitting adjustments already can obviously change those adjustments in light of England's decision to disband.

Lots of activity across Europe in
Fall 1902, with rather a lot of bounces!

In the east, Russia's attempts to take back Rumania would
have been thwarted, were it not for Austria withdrawing to
Budapest, meaning Rumania is vacant and remains
Russian.  Turkey takes Serbia off Austria, and manuvers
fleets in a threatening manner.  Italy shuffles forces,
moving more armies onto the Austrian border.

In the west, the major development is France forcing his
way into Belguim, evicting England in the process.
Both German forces bounce English attacks, and for the
second season running, Russia tries to support an attack on
Munich, but finds the attacking army does something else.

The English army in Belguim only has one valid retreat (to
Picardy), so I've made that retreat.  Matt - if you
want to disband the army, let me know asap, so I can let
folk know.

Subject to the English retreat being changed, I need
adjustments off five people - see list below.  Can I
have winter adjustments in by 2100GMT on Wednesday 24th
March.  If people want to get adjustments in early,
I'll adjudicate winter once all have been received.

Austria:   Supp  2 Unit  3
Remove  1
England:   Supp  6 Unit  5
Build  1 (2 if retreating army disbanded)
France:    Supp  6 Unit  5 Build
1
Germany:   Supp  4 Unit  2
Build  1
Italy:     Supp  5 Unit  5
Build  0
Russia:    Supp  5 Unit  5 Build
0
Turkey:    Supp  6 Unit  5 Build
1
