Camel Spotting - Game Start! - FuzzyLogic   (Feb 25, 2010, 12:12 pm)
Hey everyone and welcome to this, the three-hundred and fourth game of Diplomaticcorp Diplomacy! (boy seems like I just put out one of these starts yesterday)... This is Camel Spotting! Played on the outstanding Ancient Med map. If you've received this email and you thought you were signing up for Camel Speaking, that's the next door down. Camel Spitting, unfortunately, was cancelled for reasons of liability.

Our goal here in this game is to spot camels. Lots of them. Tons. Well, maybe a few. Ok to be fair, there are no camels to be spotted anywhere in the game. But we'll still have fun trying. Along the way, we may pick up or lose some centers here and there and if someone happens to gather 18 - we'll call them the winner! Sound good?

Ancient Med is one of my favorite maps. It is such a simple design, yet perfectly balanced in every way. It's got a very neutral start, in that no particular power is really at a disadvantage like say Italy in the Standard game... each power faces two neighbors, one to either side, and two other powers further across the sea.

In most of my games I tend to do completely random assignments, and given none of you have played this map before I see no reason not to do the same here! So courtesy of some help from random.org, here we go!

Let's set the first deadline for next Thursday March 4, at 3pm Central US time (2100 GMT).
That's 1 week from today.

For this first turn, prelims are required. That is, you have to send me something asap, by early next week at the latest so I get something on file for you. Most of you will know that I don't send out reminders, and once we're out of the first year, NMRs will just fall how they do. Expect adjudications to be timely - no fluffy delays, extensions, grace periods, etc. Even tho you probly dont know what you want to do yet, just pick your best guess and send in prelims -every turn- It will save you someday for when you get stuck in meetings, your internet goes out, or aliens land in your back yard and steal your camels and you dont get to the game when you thought you would. In almost every case, it's better to have turned something in early so your units dont doodle about and hold for the turn.

I think that's about it for now! If you have any questions shout them out, and feel free to send out an intro or whatever for your country.
Enjoy,
-mike

The Great King of Persia, Xerxes, sends greetings to his most
excellent peers in the Ancient Mediterranean, and welcomes your
emissaries to the Apadana. May the peace between our great nations be
eternal.

DC302 Spring 1901 deadline - psychosis1973   (Feb 24, 2010, 9:26 am)
Folks

The Spring 1901 deadline is on Thursday 25th February at 2100GMT - around 32 hours away. Consider this email your reminder.

Note that to date, I haven't received preliminary moves from Austria. If I don't receive moves by the above deadline from Austria, then my approach will be to not run the turn, and instead seek a replacement Austria, and set a new Spring 1901 deadline. I'm hopeful this won't be necessary, but just to give you fair warning.

Everyone else has submitted preliminaries, which I'll use unless I receive updated moves prior to the deadline.

Thanks

Michael

Gentlemen

Welcome to a new game of standard diplomacy on the
diplomaticcorp website!  I'm Michael, your friendly
neighbourhood GM, and I'll be your guide during this
game.  I've been playing Diplomacy on the site for a
few years now (with varying degrees of success), and

this is

my third game as GM.

It's been a while getting started, but the game is

now

ready to launch.  Please take the time to read this
introductory email!

HOUSE RULES

Important:  My house rules are here.  Read them!

http://www.diplomaticcorp.com/houserules/psychosis1973.doc

These are also available on the game's webpage.

Key points are:
- my say is final.  I'm the GM.  I am the law!
- I live in the UK.  Bear this in mind when

expecting

replies to emails from me!
- I'll acknowledge receipt of orders - without
acknowledgement, your orders haven't reached me
- I'll send out reminders for moves as deadlines

approach,

but it's ultimately the responsibility of players to

get

moves in on time
- can you label your moves with the game number

(which

we'll get shortly), the power you control, and the

year and

season they relate to
- the bit about me not receiving your moves - two

strikes

and you're out

DIPLOMATICCORP WEBSITE

I'll email out adjudications shortly after the

deadline and

update the game page on the diplomaticcorp website at

the

same time. We're game DC301 on the site - you should

all

have the game now linked on your profile page.  The
game will shortly have a dedicated forum on the
diplomaticcorp site. Feel free to use it!

MESSAGES

Players can send anonymous messages (grey press)

through

the GM - these can be sent out with adjudications, or
immediately - your choice!  Useful for stirring

things

up amongst other powers!

DEADLINES

The Spring 1901 moves are due to me 9PM GMT on

Thursday 25

February. I strongly encourage players to every season

send

in preliminary moves as soon as possible.  This will
allow me to review your moves and point out any

problems

(e.g., invalid orders, missing or misplaced units,

etc.)

that may present themselves in sufficient time for you

to

correct them!

To ensure everyone's still committed to the game, I'm
making preliminaries compulsory for the first turn -

could

everyone therefore send me preliminary moves by Monday

22

February.  I can then be reassured that the game's
going smoothly.

I've given a bit more time for those all important

first

turn negotations.  As a rough indication, future
deadlines beyond the first turn are planned to be as
follows:

Fall 1901: Tuesday 2 March
Fall 1901 retreats (if needed): Thursday 4 March

I'll generally try to have four days for major turns

and

one or two days for retreat and adjustment turns

thereafter

DEADLINE EXTENSIONS

Happy to extend deadlines on request, but please give

me

plenty of warning!

POWER ALLOCATIONS

And the bit you've all been waiting for....who's got

what

country!

So, we have...in charge of the dual monarchy, playing

as

Austria...Steve Andrew (stevenseph1-at-aim.com)

Say hello to the island ruler, playing as

England...Matt

Barnes(mlb767-at-aim.com)

Munching smelly cheese, garlic and other

stereotypical

Gallic food, and playing as France...Simon

Langley-Evans (Simon.Langley-evans-at-nottingham.ac.uk)

Guten Tag to our German player...Ajay Bhan (ajkbhan-at-gmail.com)

Say "Ciao bella!" to the Italian Stallion...Brian

Miller(chessman121212-at-gmail.com)

Coming out of the east, the Russian Bear...Sean

O'Donnell

(sean_o_donnell-at-hotmail.com)

And finally, our Turkish Delight...Mike Read (porkbelly00-at-gmail.com)

Any questions, or comments please shout and I'll do my

best

to respond.  You may want to introduce yourself to

the

other players...otherwise...game on!

Michael

dc296 Round 1 Board 6 - Game ending explained. - z93blom   (Feb 24, 2010, 1:29 am)
Blitzers,

I've been asked a question with regards to how the game can end, and I'll try to explain the method we use here at DiplomaticCorp to determine if the game will end:

The game can end in several ways:
1. Someone solos - gets the required 18 centers (or half, rounded up, of the centers for a variant).
2. Everyone agrees to a draw. This could be a DIAS - a Draw Including All Survivors, or it could be a draw between just some of the powers on the board. All surviving powers will get to vote on it though, and all powers need to agree to the draw in order for it to pass.

A draw can be proposed by anyone - stating which nations should be included in the draw. The votes are handed in with the next orderset, and the results are published by the GM. The GM won't tell who voted which way, or even how many votes were for and how many against. He or she will just tell whether the draw proposal passed or not.

When the game end each of you will get a result for the game:
1. Solo - pretty self explanatory. Congratuations - you won the game.
2. Draw - part of a draw
3. Survival - survived until the bitter end, although not included in the draw.
4. Eliminated - out of the game.

Based on your result we also calculate a ranking. I'm not going to go though the mathematics of it all here - instead I direct you to the page on http://diplomaticcorp.com/info.php?type=ratings, where it is all explained.

DC 285: Retreat is in! - blueraider0 at gmail.com   (Feb 24, 2010, 12:05 am)
The Greek unit retreats OTB.  Builds/disbands due Thursday at 5 PM, will adjud early if all orders submitted with "final" in subject.  I'm not sending out a new map because it looks basically the same as the old one.

Carthage must disband 1
Persia may build one
Egypt may build two

Take care!

"It's like in the great stories, Mr. Frodo. The ones that really mattered. Full of darkness and danger they were. and sometimes you didn't want to know the end because how could the end be happy? How could the world go back to the way it was when so much bad had happened? But in the end, it's only a passing thing. The shadow, even the darkness must pass. A new day will come. And when the sun shines it will shine out the clearer. Those were the stories that stayed with you - That meant something. Even if you were too small to understand why. But I think, Mr. Frodo, I do understand. I know now. Folk in those stories had lots of chances of turning back only they didn't. They kept going because they were holding onto something."
"What are we holding onto, Sam?"
"That there's some good in this world, Mr. Frodo. And it's worth fighting for."

DC271 Cimarra - S07 Results: Russian Solo Unavoidable? Just a Question of the Centers for 2nd Place? (dc271) garry.bledsoe Mar 02, 07:18 pm
Game Over! A Russian Solo Is Achieved As Russia Takes the Final 3 Centers and Defends Bulgaria and Rumania.
Congrats to Ian and All Thanks to Darryl and Nick for Playing Out Their Countries
A Game Definitely Affected by NMR's and CD's is Complete

All,
Let's take nothing away from Ian; he pulled off a solo and that is a difficult proposition regardless of circumstances. This game seemed troubled once we saw several Western power CD's. However, I still expected to see this end in a 2 or 3-way draw. I am not sure what exactly occurred that prevented A/G from working together to stop the solo but somehow Ian was able to keep that animosity alive and take advantage.

All in all an interesting game. Also proof that not all NMR's aid the nearest neighbor! Thanks to the players who held on throughout to play this game. I wish you all better luck on future games and hope that NMR's are a think of the past on our site. I know that they are top of mind for both Mike and myself; we want to find a way to reduce them.

Feel free to send end-game statements to the dc271(at)diplomaticcorp.com address.

All the best,
Garry

Don't suppose I could threaten to throw the game to the other side if either of you attacks me, could I? I don't think this game would head to a 2 way draw if it continued, I'm just trying to work out whether I'd survive a solo or if there's a chance of edging in as the small one in an unstable three-way...

Hmm. I think I'll put in a provisional vote tonight and decide tomorrow whether or not to let it stand. Feel free to persuade me of the wisdom of voting for the draw, Greg and Fredrik. Wink

That's it!

A Brazil / Chile 2-way is proposed, vote with Spring orders due Friday 3/12, 3pm Central.
Note I've had the wrong year on the last couple turns, we're just now going into Spring 46.
