DC 293: W1905 Adjudication - AceRimmer   (Feb 12, 2010, 4:42 pm)
Alright... so today's adjudication is an educational opportunity in the strictness of Winter Blitz rules and the it-falls-on-the-shoulders-of-the-player-even-when-the-GM-is-totally-out-of-touch interpretations. Explanations in a minute...

F1905R:
German A Kiel - Ruhr
German A Warsaw - Ukraine

W1905:
England: Remove F Berlin
France: Build waived
Germany: Remove A Ukraine
Remove F Helgoland Bight
Italy: Remove A Apulia
Russia: Build A Moscow
Build F St Petersburg(nc)
Turkey: Build A Smyrna

So, Germany submitted a retreat order but failed to include an adjustment order... and as the rules state, Fall Retreats and Winter Adjustments are adjudicated simultaneously. The Ukrainian army and Helgoland fleet were disbanded in accordance with tournament rules on NBRs. I will check with the tournament moderators to see whether this will lead to an NMR in club stats or not.
France is away from home and is using an alternate email address... or, at least he did so for Fall 1905. The problem is: I didn't realize until now that this inconvenience would extend until today. Consequently, I only emailed the Fall adjudication to his usual inbox. A gentle, kind, and loving GM would postpone the adjudication and give France a second chance. But a Winter Blitz tournament GM would note that: (a) the adjudications were posted to the DC website for all the public to behold, and (b) it is the player's responsibility to contact the GM if he has not received the adjudication. In short, the tournament does not allow for leniency, no matter how much the GM can empathize with the player. France NBRs.

S1906 is on Monday!

I did sent orders and cc'd to orders-at-diplomaticcorp.com (orders-at-diplomaticcorp.com) before the deadline.
I did check the map and had a valid build order. I'm confused as to why the NBR. Is it because it came from a different address? Was it late?

DC-272 Game Over - TheWhiteWolf   (Feb 12, 2010, 2:54 pm)
Guys,
I'm pleased to announce the end of DC-272: Machiavelli Map-Only Play Test. A unanimous YES vote to the T/V draw means you can all feel free to move on to your next challenge. Thanks for participating, and I'd personally appreciate EoG statements. Specifically, since this was a play test, I'd like to see your comments on map balance, what you'd like to see changed, etc. You can send them Reply All or directly to me (I'll send them to everyone). Thanks for playing!
I hope my quotes put you all in mind of the man this variant is named for. At the least, I hope you enjoyed reading them. This final quote says as much about Diplomacy players as any other group of people - I am pleased to acquaint myself with all of you, and hope to run into you many times in future games.

"There is no better indication of a man’s character than the company which he keeps; and therefor very properly a man who keeps respectable company acquires a good name, for it is impossible that there should not be some similitude of character and habits between him and his associates." - Niccoló Machiavelli, The Discourses. 1517

DC-272 Game Over (dc272) chaosonejoe Feb 12, 07:34 pm
Well, that was fun for a while, tedious at times, and mostly interesting.

I've been around the Diplomacy board for a long time, face-to-face, a few mail games, and rounds of email (of which I've been in more than a few recently, and mostly in spurts of activity.

Obviously I dared to choose Florence for the obvious connections. I've studied Machiavelli, put together a few game concepts, and respect the man as a writer/commentator/political analyst. But then, I don't quote him all that often.

Definite differences between this game and Dip, and this game and the board game. The lack of 'other' options than pure diplomacy definitely changes things up. The reliance on the board seems vastly unbalanced, yet strangely enough I lucked into some early success, and Venice played well in the endgame (as it were, because once Garry turned on me and turned the tide, it was rather obvious where it was headed.)

I did have disappointment in the decided lack of communcation. As Mr. Wolf said, there was leniency in the playtest aspect, and because of that, I think we all strayed from routine. I'm thinking that turned into a decided indifference to give-and-take at the tipping point, but that's my perspective.

Start of game was really intense, and seems to be the most fascinating aspect of the board. Papacy/Florence/Naples is just crazy in the setup. Unfortunately, our dear friend Brutus decided to role-play, and I do admit that was hard to handle. However it did allow for some double-dealing with Nathan, and then a "I can't believe the opportunity" moment when I saw five centers open and a major stab of my Napolitan ally ensued.

(As an aside, I did get harsh in tone and words with Brutus. No major regrets, but my main point is that a game is a game, and if someone chooses to be a pompous .... well, a pompous character, when everyone else is playing the game and not playing a character, there comes a time when you begin to grate on nerves, and not enhance the enjoyability of the game. At that point, elimination is the goal. Sorry.)

Well, to be honest, Nathan specifically alerted me to how badly things were going with Turkey, and not exactly studying the entirety of the board, I leapt at the info, realizing that I could more than cripple Naples and would have to race Turkey for centers down south regardless. Strangely enough, there was no coordination between myself and Max, but we vanquished Naples nonetheless.

Was it wrong? Well, in hindsight, without a solid border north and without the proper array of forces, and a laxadaisical effort, it didn't turn out well! Also, taking the center lead with that massive gain, especially at that point of the game, and not enforcing a strategy doomed me.

I went for balance, and with the chaos builds and the impossibility of holding back builds and the lack of restrictions on it meant taking a guess. As I foolishly indicated to Garry, I was horribly out of position. (Yeah, I learnt well from what I did earlier with Naples!)

Lack of garrison changes offered no help for me. Also that sea zone spacing really caused strategy issues for me (as well as my two year misreading of adjacency) as I felt the need to see the TS zone, but overcommitted forces and yet was unable to maintain it.

The north seemed interesting enough. I sided with France early, trying to keep a balance weight against what seemed to be a Milan eager to ally with everyone. I mentioned to Nick that the concept of promising other peoples centers for alliance purposes never makes sense. I had a distrust of Milan early, and was eager to work with Venice and France to force him out.

Of course, I was in no way prepared to defend against Venice, and foolishly though I had another turn or two to deal with it.

From there, battling Turkey kept me busy, and there were way too many stabs with Mark and no way to muster the naval forces in the West. I found it odd that Venice/Turkey worked the truce in the East, but it was obviously working and forced me to the draw before I got gobbled up for good.

I will say that the earlier draw proposals were insulting, and definitely would say that a legit offer a month ago would have ended the game accordingly.

Best to all, and I look forward to gaming with you guys in the future.

And special thanks to The White Wolf for running this playtest. I know I had my memory issues, deadline misses and other assorted annoyances like most others.

DC270: Fall 1908 Results - dipknight   (Feb 11, 2010, 10:16 pm)
GM’s remarks:

Our two missing players have responded.  My records show that they have not been late before; therefore, we will continue with them.  However, per the house rules, should they be late again, they will be removed and a replacement found without further ado.

The German retreat had only one available avenue of retreat; so, it has been performed automatically.  Joe, if you would have preferred that unit be retreated off-the-board, please let me know as soon as possible so that I can send out a correction.  Thanks.

DC224 Slaughter At StoryTime - Fall 15 Deadline De... - garry.bledsoe   (Feb 11, 2010, 10:04 pm)
We are missing one set. I have that person on notice that I need them before NMRing them. Hopefully I get them by tomorrow night at the latest (or sigh...I will NMR them). All apologies. I just hate to NMR someone.

.ExternalClass .ecxhmmessage P {padding:0px;} .ExternalClass body.ecxhmmessage {font-size:10pt;font-family:Verdana;} A Havener's request is a humble GM's honor.

We have a request to move our deadline until Monday February 8th at 6pm CST. So shall it be.

Also let this be a reminder...I think I have confirmed receipt of orders that I have received thus far. Afraid I am still missing some. Let's get them in by Monday!

Good luck surviving races.

Subject: DC224 Slaughter At StoryTime - Spring 15 Revision...Some Trolls Disapparate!
Date: Thu, 28 Jan 2010 14:29:00 -0500

.ExternalClass .ecxhmmessage P {padding:0px;} .ExternalClass body.ecxhmmessage {font-size:10pt;font-family:Verdana;} All,
It seems that our Troll King wished to disband his A at Anvard in lieu of retreating. Unfortunately the map I have still shows an A in Dancing Lawn so I will get that corrected later (there is NO A in Dancing Lawn!). The other two retreats stand:
F Grs can move to OwlwoodF Thw can move to Far Far Away

Given this change, let's push our Fall deadline from the 2nd to the 4th at 6pm CST.

OH...and one more piece of business...the fabulous Undead Lady pointed out that my original email only contained the orders as written but not with the action that resulted. Those with results are included here.

Thanks.

DC297; Fall 1905 Results - dipknight   (Feb 11, 2010, 9:37 pm)
GM’s remarks:

If you have more than one required build/disband, please provide your build/disband orders in the order of importance from top to bottom.  And, remember contingency build/disband orders can only be based on a possible retreat, not on someone else’s build/disband.  Any contingency build/disband based on someone else’s build/disband will be ignored and the Civil Disorder disband will be enforced.  Please ask me individually, if you need to be reminded of how Civil Disorder disbands work.  Thanks.

dc291 fall 1905 results! - coryfucius   (Feb 11, 2010, 5:45 pm)
Lots of turnover in center control this season all over the map.

England gains control of Denmark and also holds on to Sweden after a 3-way bounce. Germany attempts to take Belgium, but the French defenders hold their ground. England overcomes French defense and sails into Brest, while French defenders stymie the Turkish-supported Russian attack on Marseilles. Turkey guesses correctly (or Italy guesses incorrectly) and sails unopposed into Rome. Italy attempts to support Austria's move to Budapest that would leave Italy in control of Vienna, but Turkey crashes the party by moving from Rumania to Galicia with Russian support, leaving Russia in control of Rumania.

There is one autumn retreat due from Italy. Marc, I won't issue a default order because you have multiple retreat options:
The Italian army in Galicia may retreat to Bohemia, Silesia, or OTB.

Winter adjustments will be due as follows:
Austria: build 1
England: build 2
France: remove 1
Germany: remove 1
Italy: remove 2 (or remove 1 if retreat OTB)
Turkey: build 1

Both the autumn retreat and winter adjustments will be due tomorrow, Friday 2/12 at 3pm Central (US) / 21:00 GMT. You may submit conditional adjustment orders based on the Italian retreat.

It is very likely that I will be away for both this turn and the spring 1906 moves on Monday, as both of these days are state holidays. Normally, I would be stuck at work during these holidays attempting to balance the state's budget, but our Governor signed a bill today that delays the budget's due date. No offense to the Diplomacy community, but I plan not to be at my work computer so I can enjoy these days off that I rarely get to see. Garry or Mike will take care of business in my absence - PLEASE be sure to cc: the Orders box. Thanks!

Cory

Press from Turkey:

A Brave New World
(a lyrical message from the Sultan, inspired by the artistry of our English friend)

1905 proved quite a year
Across our land so fair.
Word was spread 'bout deceit afoot
Against our Sultan dear.

Pressed to learn, our spies did find
A proverbial murderer's row.
FGI all lead the way!
With A and R in tow.

What must a Turkish chap then do,
Faced with impure threats?
Ally with gentle Lion of course,
To push and claw and scratch.

The spring now past and strength aligned,
What should new friends now do?
Welcome even more of course!
Come Russia, and Austria too.

The first step in the fall is just,
Precursor of things to come.
As the New Alliance sharpens knives,
To carve up Europe whole.

DC 285 misprint - blueraider0 at gmail.com   (Feb 11, 2010, 5:18 pm)
Not a big deal, but keep an eye out for an e-mail that says "DC 295."  In my haste I wrote down the wrong number.  But that e-mail has our adjud.  Sorry again for the confusion....

DC 295: Spring 298 BC Results! - blueraider0 at gmail.com   (Feb 11, 2010, 5:16 pm)
CELEBRATION!  I finally got the DC 285 group to work in my GMail.  This makes me happy.  Does it make you happy?  Probably not.  But the moves are in!  Will they make you happy?  We'll see!  Greece/Persia do some switching and Egypt swings hard east.  Rome blocks Carthage at every turn, and is that Cato the Elder I hear cheering?

Map attached, check for errors.  Need 1 retreat from Persia: Sinope must go to Bithynia, Cappadocia or Chersonesus, or OTB.  Deadline for retreat is tomorrow at 6 EST but if I get the retreat with "final" in the subject of the e-mail, I'll adjudicate sooner.

DC-272 Deadline Delay - TheWhiteWolf   (Feb 11, 2010, 4:53 pm)
I swear, guys, this is the last time I push back a deadline for missing orders. I've received one set of adjustments for winter, which is due in EIGHT minutes. I'm extending us by 24 hours, which means I want them TOMORROW. Please? (Also, I have yet to receive one end game vote - you know who you are.)

Of course, only two of those three Turkish builds may be used, given that Ankara is presently already occupied.

Hallo zusammen,

there is little in the way of good news for ole Stresemann, these days. Two thirds of Germany's previous territory have fallen into enemy hands. Though at least Hamburg has been liberated.

It hasn't been a particularly good year for the other member of the Rapallo Pact either: Stalin now commands over a non-contiguous Scandinavian realm, as Anglo-Polish cooperation has cost him Sweden.

Down in the Mediterranean Kemal's ambitions have received something of a damper by an amphibious assault on Alexandria not panning out despite all the intricate logistical planning (i.e. a two-sea-zone convoy) involved.

Retreats/Adjustments are now due no later than Saturday, 6 PM CET.

Liebe Grüsse,

Charles

dc296 Round 1 Board 6 - Fall 1905 Results - z93blom   (Feb 11, 2010, 2:03 pm)
Blitzers,

I'm happy to report that once again we have orders from all of you. I feel lucky to have you as my players, since I feel that the game is not spoiled by a lot of NMRs. Today is thursday, and that means that we have two sets of orders due tomorrow: the retreats for the Autumn, along with the winter adjustments. Remember that the adjustments can be conditional depending on the retreats.

The big winner this season is Russia, gaining two new provinces. Turkey is now down to a single center, while France lands troops on English soil.

Enough chatter: Here is the information you've all been waiting for:

Autumn retreats needed:
English A St Petersburg can retreat to Finland, or OTB.
Austrian A Venice can retreat to Tuscany, Apulia, or OTB.
German A Vienna can retreat to Bohemia or OTB.

Winter Adjustments needed:
Austria: Build 1 (or 0 if the retreat is OTB). There are no home centers open for building though.
England: Remove 1 (or 0 if the retreat is OTB).
France: Build 1
Germany: Remove 1 (or 0 if the retreat is OTB).
Russia: Build 2
Turkey: Remove 1
