DC226 Summer 1913 Press! - hapolley   (Oct 21, 2009, 6:05 pm)
The tide of the war is changing; after this year's expected gains/losses Germany will not only be the most powerful nation in Europe but Germany will also be in the best tactical position to continue Germany's seemingly unconquerable growth. But Germany's fate is not yet a certainty. If key locations, such as Spain and/or Kiel, were to be attacked this fall and the newcomers to Moscow gain the support of the other forces in the area and were to turn their armies westward and move into Warsaw while leaving Moscow to its former inhabitants there might be a chance to reverse the fate of Europe which seems to be headed towards Germany domination. I pray that the peoples of Europe, regardless of their different customs and faiths, will see reality and truth for what it really is and work together to change Europe's black fate.

Actually, Fredrik, your reminders said Wednesday, 10/21/09 with no time requirement (GST or otherwise). Given that, I assumed I had until midnight today (10/21/09) to submit. The rough start to the game, with various delays, led me to believe you had chosen a day rather than an hour. If you are going to assign me an NMR and give me a hold for the first round, then you should start looking for your replacement now.

Gentlemen,

Well - we're off to a rough start here. Despite an extra week and a reminder a few days ago we've got an NMR from Turkey, which means that all his units stay where they are. Another NMR this season will see a replacement player brought in. The house rules state allow for the replacement to have a small time for negotiations in that case which I will allow.

Other than that all the orders were able to be carried out except for a slight disagreement (?) over who should occupy the English Channel.

No adjustments are called for, so we just move on to the next major season - Fall 1901. Deadline will be a week from now, Wednesday, 28th of October, 7 PM GMT, as usual. Again, I strongly urge you to submit preliminaries as soon as possible, since I will be out of town from Sunday to Wednesday, and will be unable to confirm moves at that point in time. You can keep on sending me ordersets until the start of the adjudication though - just make sure you label them with a number or something so that I'll know which one is the latest.

Any mistakes that I've made should be brought to my attention as soon as possible.

Game on!

All,
Here are our adjustments. I will add a map later tonight [yes, for real this time Darryl] but I wanted to share them now [I am currently at work].

New German F in Berlin which is interesting because...
Russia scuttles its F in the Baltic.
Austria calls on the local Viennese militia to join the cause and conscripts them into the Army.

Our next deadline for Spring 1903 will be Wednesday October 28th at 6pm CST.

Jim - if you are out there, I would love to hear from you!

Dan, quoting Fredrik’s deadline:

I'll see if we can keep a weekly schedule, and make the adjudications be due on Wednesday evenings at 8:00pm (Sweden, GMT + 1). The first turn will now be due the 21th of October, which should leave Tony plenty of time to talk to you all.

He said this twice. Once in the game-start mail, and then again in the mail introducing our new Italian -- there was no ambiguity.

If you were a newbie I’d grant you the “didn’t know it was a time and not a day” but you’ve been around the block this is your 6th game. Why no prelims?

All said, Turkey is the least awful country to NMR with in the first year due to your corner position. Now -- what shall we do about these Bulgarians that were fully expecting to be ransacked by the Turks in every single Diplomacy game ever played. It’s like groundhog day for Bulgaria -- only instead it’s Spring 1901, Turks invade. And this was the one game they woke up and found no rule-imposing Sultan there. Whatever will they do??? Smile

However, experience has taught me to always submit provisional orders early. There's always time afterwards to change them due to negotiations etc.

Dan, quoting Fredrik’s deadline:

I'll see if we can keep a weekly schedule, and make the adjudications be due on Wednesday evenings at 8:00pm ( Sweden , GMT + 1).

Smile

1648 091010: Spring 1649 Moves - charlesf   (Oct 21, 2009, 12:45 pm)
Grüß Gott!

The very first adjucation is always something special. One has only the (written) word of one's fellow players to go on. Hopes and fears of what the future holds make for a conflicting cocktail of emotions. Also, since this is only the second 1648 playtest, the comparison to the earlier game's first season holds some interest.

I should say our game features even less overt military conflict than the already pacific start of the first playtest, which saw both the opening shots in an Anglo-French and Turko-Spanish War as well as some ambivalent Swedish manoeuvres on Denmark-Norway's borders. In ours, the English Channel and Ionian Sea witness no such conflict. Instead, Sweden pulled a "Charles XII" and attacked the Tsar, whose own expansion plans were checked in the Southern Steppes. I wonder how long it shall take until other map areas heat up.

Let me thank all players for us being off to a smooth start, having dilligently forwarded me their correspondence and in some cases sharing their strategic intentions with me. It has been most instructive.

Few words on my adjucating. Since I'm entering all the orders into Realpolitik and letting it work things out, the map output takes precedence over the written results, simply because there's less scope for me to mess things up with the former. Rest assured that I scrupulously check and double-check DP allocations.

Talking of Realpolitik, I recommend you download the 1648 module from the DC site. I shall attach the latest .dpy file (a Realpolitik save game you can load once you've got the new module) to all adjucations.

Since there are no pending retreats, we'll be immediately moving on to Fall 1649, its deadline being next Wednesday, 28 October. Note though that preliminary orders need to be submitted by 6 PM CET on Monday, 26 October. I must say I'm really happy with this arrangement, since it provides an extra safeguard against NMRs and allows me to adjucate and discover any mistakes.

Cheers,

Charles

DC-224 A Slaughter Consistent - Late Orders - former.trout   (Oct 21, 2009, 8:22 am)
Folks,

Two of the old reliables proved not so reliable this turn.  Missing two sets for Spring 12, both from players who are very rarely late.  For the sake of fairness and consistency, we'll extend for 24 hours today while I try to rope the orders in.

The players in question have been notified in a seperate email.  Hopefully they'll respond over the next 8-10 hours while I'm at work and the adjudication will be out first thing this evening.

Cheers,

Trout

Not really sure where I should be posting this, but I'll put it here, and please move it if I'm wrong.

I'm posting to ask if anyone on this site is interested in playing in the inter-site World Series Diplomacy tournament that I am running in the New Year.

Details are explained in the latest issue of Diplomacy World:

http://www.diplomacyworld.net/pdf/dw107.pdf

Hopefully I'll remember to check back here to answer any questions

DC226 Spring 1913 Results! Summer/Fall Due! - hapolley   (Oct 19, 2009, 5:46 pm)
Standard DC226\Spring/1913
==========================
The Deadline for gunboat game dc226 Summer 1913 is Wed 21, Fall
1913 deadline is Sunday, Oct 25, at 2400 Hrs. The retreat of
Turkey Gal-Rum will be assumed unless I receive a different
retreat order before Wed 21. My IMAC is in the shop again so I
must compete with my 17 year old son for computer time. Delays
of up to 24 hours may occur. The good news is that the tech
discovered my complaint about the speed going up and down is
true. Sorry for delays these troubles may cause.

I speak for all in thanking Mike Hoffman for his
contribution to the game while in command of the always
tricky AUSTRIAN position.
TURKEY stalemated by G/E will alliance continue to hold?

RULES QUESTION: I CAN DISLODGE MY OWN UNIT? NO! 2000 Rules;
page 13 Self Dislodgement, page 14 cutting support on your own
units

Not only can you not directly dislodge your own unit but you
can not indirectly dislodge one of your units with a support,
or by cutting one of your own supports. This was a nightmare
to program, it took me years before I got it to work right
without some unexpected bug showing up.

ENGINEERED PRESS RELEASES
-------------------------
Willie,
An excellent opportunity this year! We trust your analysis has
revealed the same information to you. This Spring you should
be able to take Galicia and retake Venice. We have already
dispatched the forces necessary to facilitate these campaigns.
dispatched the forces necessary to facilitate these campaigns.
With Venice under control, Naples and Trieste will follow. By the end of the year, the Sultan will have no alternative but
to sue for peace.
Yours in Victory and Peace!
Bertie

Dearest Bertie,
Thank you for your latest missive, and I trust and hope that
the Season has turned out well for us along your suggested
lines... If not,I feel any setback will merely be temporary.

In the meantime however, so as to enable me to sleep peacefully
in my bed, I would kindly request that you consider withdrawing
F DEN to SKA and F MAO to NAO as a gesture of goodwill to my
forces, who, as you know, have borne the brunt of the fighting
on the mainland, and who would surely welcome such orders.

I can sense the Sultan wilting, let us press home our advantage together!
Willie.

Dc 277: GM announcement - AlanRFarrington   (Oct 19, 2009, 2:47 pm)
My Computer decided to start working today, so I went ahead and got the adjudication ready, and it should be out on time (or at least as close to on time as all the other adjudications). I'll be able to adjudicate the winter turn tonight and hopefully I'll have a new computer by the next deadline. Send your orders to me and if I need Andy I'll relay them to him.

Thanks guys,
Alan Farrington

Folks,
Alan just wrote me and told me his computer is working again, so I guess I shouldn't have jumped the gun. I've got to say, this was my shortest tenure as GM ever!
Alan should have your winter adjudication out tonight.
