Wow has a week gone by this fast? Between the WB wrapping up and the DCI getting started, there's been hardly enough time to breathe! You have a bit of time yet as finals aren't due till tomorrow evening, 2300 GMT but a couple of you dont have prelims in yet. And I could swear I mentioned something about using them in the Game-Start mail...
Enjoy,

DCI 09 - Prelims - martinhaven (Sep 03, 2009, 2:15 pm) |
AP Amsterdam:
Prime Minister Abraham Kuyper returned from a one-week vacation to find that the tense situation in Europe now looks like inevitable war. His response...."Bah!" The collection of governments of Ruhr, Belgium, and Holland hope the PM has more up his sleeve than "Bah", but only time will tell. Until then, this reporter can only observe that defensive fortifications are being brought up to snuff, diplomatic emissaries are flying, boating, and taking the rail to all points of Europe, and that opiate sales have gone through the roof.

Great!
A list of who's who in diplomacy, and because of a huge couple of days of night work, I'm just seeing this game start announcement. For those who have written, my apologies for my silence. that will be rectified shortly.
A bit about myself as an introduction. My name is Frank Martin, and I am a civil engineer (roadway and bridge construction management) in Granite Bay, California (a suburb of Sacramento). I've been playing diplomacy for a very long time (dating myself), and have always considered it the best of all games. I have three children, G15, B8, G5 who keep me very busy, and a lovely wife that keeps me grounded. Aside from taking my children to various athletic events and playing a very little soccer (football) myself, I like to read a good book, and very occasionally get involved in a spirited game of diplomacy.
As for the game, I like to think that I write often, strategize fairly well, and am able to be flexible to the changing environment. If you feel like I'm quiet, it's probably because real life has snuck up on me, as I don't cold shoulder anyone (although if you stab me twice, don't expect long loving responses to any further missives).
I wish the best of luck to all, and hope everybody has a fun experience. Thanks to Michael in advance for running this game.

Okay, here we go. There are some interesting developments. Germany gains an Italian center, but generously? donates his build to the British. In fact England did quite well this turn, and has three builds due. The only other adjustment is for Italy, who must remove one.
Adjustments are due on Monday, September 7, 17:00 MDT. Remember that if I get orders from both parties that are clearly marked as final orders, I can adjudicate early.

DC-272 Fall 1454 Adjudication - TheWhiteWolf (Sep 03, 2009, 12:29 pm) |
Folks,
Sorry this wasn't out yesterday. Today was my oldest daughter's first day of school (ever!) and it's been a hectic week preparing everything. This season brings us our first clashes, as well as some unfulfillable threats of excommunication. Sorry, Pope Brutus, maybe with the next playtest you'll actually be able to follow through! No part of this board is boring, as we see action north, south and center. Namely, in a couple of shocking moves, Naples sneaks an army behind Papal lines, Milan makes an all-out assault of French Turin, and the heretics from the south sack a major Venetian trading post.
This won't make any difference this year, but please keep it in mind for future build seasons: This variant will use Chaos builds, via which you may build a unit in any free SC you own. This is to substitute for the lack of convert-able Garrison units, through which powers could switch between armies and fleets. (This is mostly a nod toward Austria and Milan, who wouldn't be able to sail otherwise, and Turkey, whose Navy would have been stuck ferrying grunts all game.) Without further ado, I give you the results.

Scots - Build F For
Norse - Build F Hor
Anglo-Saxons - No Change

Quickie post for now just to keep the game flowing. I don't have a
map for you right now, and I'm not setting a new Spring 828 deadline
yet, but I wanted to give you all these results so you wouldn't have
to sit on hold until I get back on Sunday. I will kick out a map and
update the DC site then, and there will be a normal Thursday deadline
then most likely, if no one objects.
And with that, I'm off to swim...
Swedes - Remove F Bal, A Sve
Bretons - Remove A Dyf
Gaels - Remove F Heb
Danes - Build F Jel WC, F Rib WC, A Ros
Scots - Build F For
Norse - Build F Hor

And to answer a question, Dark Ages victory condition is 20 SCs, per
the Dip Wiki (simple majority). I encourage all of you to check out
the Dip Wiki for the variant if you haven't already (on the

An interesting season - battles rage all over the map, yet not a single
retreat needed. The big winners this year are the Danes, who pick up an
impressive *three* SCs, courtesy of their stab of the Anglo-Saxons and deep
strike into Swedish territory. Elsewhere, the Gaels suffer the loss of
Munster to the Scots, who manage to hold their plunder with Anglo-Saxon
aid. The Gaels and Scots fight an epic but inconclusive battle in Dal
Riada, while Norse fleets appear off Scottish shores. The Bretons press
far
behind Anglo-Saxon lines, but are still faced with a disband this winter.
We'll have a slightly abnormal deadline for Winter 827 on Tuesday 25 August
2009, 1700 EDT - because I'm taking a small vacation next week from Wed -
Sun. Then we'll have a long spring - first Thursday in September will be
the Spring 828 deadline. Winter adjustments are at the bottom of this

I think that makes all of us agreeing to the draw.
So let me be the first to congratulate Marshall, Jeff and Chris. None of you bastards would work with me during my fleeting time in this game, and you obviously needed to stab and betray various others to get to this point. So while you may not be fine fellows, you certainly have the requisite skills to thrive at Diplomacy!
Well done...

Well.... it looks like you guys have things all wrapped up. Kind of an interesting voting procedure. Anyhow, I will send out a final summary and get the details to the club moderators, assuming that noone objects to this draw. There is a requirement that all surviving players agree, and I have to go back through my mail to make sure that happened.
Talk soon....

DC269 - Autumn 1902 - Viper (Sep 03, 2009, 9:45 am) |
OK, so it seems I have some explaining to do here. Sending in your orders for retreats is just as important as spring or fall. I don't know if I haven't been clear in saying that I need people with retreats to submit them, but without that I have to assume a disband. It's right there in the house rules. Please, if you have a retreat, take the half-minute it requires to send me your wishes.
That being said, here are the retreats from this season:
Austria:
A Budapest - Trieste
Germany:
A Holland - Ruhr
Italy:
A Munich - Silesia
So that takes us into a winter phase where some of you will be building and others will need to disband. Here are the statistics:
Austria: 3 sc's - 5 units = 2 disbands
England: 6 sc's - 4 units = 2 builds
France: 5 sc's - 5 units = even
Germany: 3 sc's - 4 units = 1 disband
Italy: 4 sc's - 4 units = even
Russia: 8 sc's - 6 units = 2 builds
Turkey: 5 sc's - 4 units = 1 build
I already have some of your winter adjustments in, which I like a lot. As usual, I will give you two days to submit your adjustments, so they will be due on Saturday, Sept 5, noon CDT. It does not take much time to figure out your builds, so I hope to see them rolling in today and tomorrow. After that we can get to the more enjoyable spring season.
mvp
ps. Since all the retreats were taken, no new map is needed. Use the same one you got from me before.[Reply] |

All,
Just a few hours over 24 hours to the deadline. I have received only 4 sets of orders.
A couple of those I have received are from those that might have been interested in a deadline extension. So, I suspect that there will be no extension. If you have not sent me your orders or received a response from me that I have received. them, please send them or resend them to me before tomorrow evening to avoid the resulting NMR.

Folks,
Seems I forgot a couple of potentially very important arrows on the map. I've just checked the box set, and the following army movement IS allowed:
Between Corsica and Sardinia (the two islands in the NW of the map)
Between Messina and Otranto (Naples home SC in the south of the map)
Sorry about this folks - I'll add arrows to the map soon (hopefully today) and send out a new version.

B, as the moderator of the dc262 forum, you can delete these. It's inevitable that when we open a forum to the world, eventually it will get caught on spam lists. When that happens, we can switch it to only allow posts from registered members.
If we do that, remember you post from two different accounts - your registered Dip account, and then your alternate one that you use sometimes. If you sent a post via the alternate account, and we had it locked down, your post would get moderated and not go up till someone approves it.
Thus, we leave them open until spam proves too much for a forum.

Turkish EOG - psychosis1973 (Sep 02, 2009, 8:02 am) |
Apologies all for the delay in getting this EOG statement out.
I joined the game after two consecutive NMRs from the previous Turkish player during 1902, which left me in a poor, but not disastorous position. Italy was pushing Austria hard and was inviting Russia and I to join him in seeing off Austria. I figured there wasn't much to be gained from that for Turkey - Italy's position was such that he'd end up with the early gains, with Russia and I ending up with the scraps at best. Such was Italy's position against Austria that any short or medium term growth for me to the west would be very limited, so I chose to try and set Russia up with a Black Sea stab. This was successful and I managed to get SEV and keep Russia in check.
In the meantime, Italy's focus moved slightly away from steamrollering Austria due to a French move to PIE, which gave me breathing room, which I needed, as finishing off Russia took longer than I thought, with my intention to get MOS and RUM not possible due to resilient play by Russia and England moving quickly from the North, leaving me with RUM.
At this point in the game, England looked a strong candidate for a solo. I tried to muster a FTI alliance to stop him, but after some initial interest, France and Italy couldn't settle their differences, with France coming across as a little inflexible in his approach, which almost threw the game to England I felt. I tried to patch up differences, but Italy was having none of it.
However, the sceptre of NMRs affected the game at this point...if Italy had thrown his lot in with England then England would definitely have soloed, and even if he'd just worked to attack France, it would have been touch and go. However, he NMRed consistently, which made it easy for France and I to gobble up his centres, which, in terms of game result, was good for France and I, but left me feeling a little dissatisfied.
I was nervous throughout the closing stages of the game that France would end up giving the solo to England by stabbing me in the hope of getting a two way draw, but it proved not to be the case, and all our moves ended up being coordinated. I think France felt the same way about me, as he came across as nervous about the situation in the Med, and wanted to swap centres at the expense of setting up a stalemate against England.
Overall, I'm more than happy with a three way draw out of this, given
Turkey's position when I joined the game, and what occurred when the anti English alliance failed. Interestingly, following the final full seasons of the game, I felt England had a chance to break the FT defensive line in the middle of the board by taking BUR - however, the draw vote passed, so what do I know?
As always, thanks to the (various!) GMs of this game and to all the other players. Hope to diplome with you all again soon!
Michael

Good game all. Too bad though that ol'
England didn't pull it off this time. I guess I should
have struck France harder in the back (or just perhaps more
times...).
I enjoyed playing with you and look forward to
stab^H^H^H^Hplaying with you some more in the future.
