DC-272 Map Color Test (Again) - TheWhiteWolf (Aug 24, 2009, 4:45 pm) |
Joe, good point you made, so I'm sharing it with everyone (for continuity of conversation.)
I think it would make more sense if Austria and Naples were switched, but there's no saying Austria will never reach the sea. Plus, as I said before, I'm trying to stay as true to the box set as possible.
I'll see what I can do about altering the sea color so there's no confusion about where the Naples-controlled land starts. ;o)
As for a Black power, Nathan, I think I'll still avoid that. As I said before, I already tried to make Austria black - it blended terribly with France's purple.
I'll send out another map (with lighter seas) once I get the arrows drawn in.

Version 3 is preferable to Version 2. I'd still like to see a "Black" color...
My only other nitpicky comment is that the blue of the ocean sqaures in 3 is awfully close to the blue of the Naples provinces, but the black lines do help.
If I had my druthers, the only change to V3 would be Black provinces and units for Naples, and I think the map would be just right.

Folks,
Sorry about that... My mouse has this evil button, right at thumb height, that causes my browser to go Back when I hit it. When I go Back in Yahoo mail, I lose entire emails (unless Y! decides to save a draft.) In my haste to retype what I lost, I forgot to reattach the maps. Here they are, please let me know which you'd prefer.
Oh, and if anyone can tell me how to disable that damn button, I'd appreciate a heads-up. I've checked in my Control Panels and in my browser preferences. My computer refuses to acknowledge that I have a magical Back button.

DC-272 Map Color Test (Again) - TheWhiteWolf (Aug 24, 2009, 4:10 pm) |
Folks,
I know, I know, still no arrows. Don't despair, they'll be on the map before the end of the day. Right now, I'm really concentrating on getting these colors right so that nobody has to worry about being confused - color deficient or not.
I've changed the color of the unowned spaces again, and hope that you all approve. It's subtle, but I tried to remove some of that nasty orange hue. I've attached two versions of the map here, one with patterns for the powers, and one with solid colors. Please tell me which you prefer.
Oh, and to those players who haven't been participating in the discussion, I'd like to offer my apologies for absolutely flooding your inbox. ;o)

DC-272 Map Color Test - TheWhiteWolf (Aug 24, 2009, 3:52 pm) |
Okay, I forgot the arrows for the adjacencies...Working on that now. As for the other suggestions, I'm looking into different patterns. Black mixes with France's purple, so that won't work, else I'd have used it for Austria (whose color in the box set is light gray - hence the white.)
I tried to remove any traces of orange from the map, but I can double check my palette and see if there's a better color for the land. As for the "real world" in full color, I'm not the guy to ask. Apparently my color deficiency isn't as bad as Mike's, but some colors are too close for my comfort (such as the purple/black I mentioned.)
I'll add the arrows, and see what I can do to separate the Florentine and Papal powers a bit.

I pulled out the old box set, and tried to match map and power colors as closely as possible. Of course, I couldn't get the land spaces exactly on, since the board coloring is so complicated. I got it as close as possible though.
Since these colors are based on the actual published game, they are my strong preference. However, I'll still happily accept comments and constructive criticism. Please let me know what you think.

Interesting idea... - Kenshi777 (Aug 24, 2009, 3:36 pm) |
I had to study Huntington's rather biased book during college (where Africa was reduced to a quasi-civilization) - but nonetheless the idea of a religion based Diplomacy variant remains an interesting one.
A possible alternate twist on this that I would propose would be to either make the variant anachronistic (or take a particular snapshot in time when most of the religions were still young) and have them expand, rather than try to capture them in the modern day, where the major religions have saturated the far corners of the globe.
I think the exclusion of Judaism is perhaps unwarranted, though it would certainly make for a difficult balance (with Arabia and Constantinople/Moscow containing them sharply in Israel).
Let's see - where would the powers be in the Middle Ages...
Orthodoxy in Moscow, Constantinople, and Athens???
Catholicism in Rome, Paris, and Vienna perhaps?
Protestantism in London, Amsterdam, and Berlin? or maybe a Scandinavian or Swiss SC?
Islam in Makkah, Madinah, and Jiddah? (split into Sunni and Shi'a?)
- Sunni - Makkah, Madinah, Jiddah
- Shi'a - Najaf, Karbala, Damascus
Hinduism in Varanasi and...? Angkor? Delhi?
Buddhism in Bodh Gaya and ...? Lhasa? Angkor? Yangon?
Atheism in Beijing, Moscow?, Wall Street?
Judaism in Jerusalem, (several others to choose from here, depending on the period of history) - Persian, Ethiopian, Syrian, etc.
All random thoughts...but this is an interesting idea. Someone should run with it...perhaps multiple flavors of it.
Perhaps Jerusalem should have some special status, like being a home SC for any Christian, Jewish, or Muslim power. In fact, if you split them into their sects, you could have a whole variant comprised exclusively of those who consider themselves Sons of Abraham, with a map radial from Jerusalem. Finding a start date would be a challenge though, as the Protestant Revolution occurred rather late in the game...

Well me and my lame-ass reg-green color deficiency have a hard time telling the 3 center'ish powers apart. Particularly the P, R, and M, and of those, the P and the M are super close. I think this is cuz the background is orangey, and those colors tend to blend in with the background a bit, or it washes them out. Again, it's solely cuz I have a hard time seeing red-green, and can never tell what the flipping numbers are on those card-tests. I wonder what the world really looks like in full color...
I would also use things like Random, ThinDiag, Hatch, Vert, Sparse, and any other fill pattern to make the powers fill by different shapes too instead of just colors for those of us who have a hard time w them.

Since these colors are based on the actual published game, they are my strong preference. However, I'll still happily accept comments and constructive criticism. Please let me know what you think.

DC-272 Map Color Test (dc272) TheWhiteWolf Aug 24, 03:52 pm |

That aside - where are my last three brave souls that are ready to enter the age of ironclads (yes, they *were* used outside of the U.S.) and seize power in South America? The borders of South America as we know it today were anything but certain in the 19th century - when Paraguay held the largest standing army, Bolivia still held the Pacific Coast, and Chile dreamed of dominating both Peru and Bolivia...so sign up already, and grab the reins of an ambitious young post-colonial nation for yourself...

Folks,
Seems I forgot a couple of potentially very important arrows on the map. I've just checked the box set, and the following army movement IS allowed:
Between Corsica and Sardinia (the two islands in the NW of the map)
Between Messina and Otranto (Naples home SC in the south of the map)
Sorry about this folks - I'll add arrows to the map soon (hopefully today) and send out a new version.

DC 260: The Butchering of Japan - AceRimmer (Aug 24, 2009, 8:23 am) |
The world converges upon Japan, and there's not much he can do about it. Shanghai is dislodged and must disband. Manchuria is dislodged and may retreat to Korea, Vladivostok, or OTB. Honshu just isn't defended.
Japan, please submit your retreat within 24 hours... better yet, within 2.4 hours (or however soon). Then, we'll have 24 hours for Winter 1904, and hopefully we can have S1905 on Friday.
For those peaking ahead to W1904, expect:
India (9 SCs): 1 build (from Pakistan)
Indonesia (: 1 build (from Shanghai)
Siberia (9): 2 builds (from Manchuria and Honshu)
Japan (4): 2 disbands (assuming no OTB)
Persia (10): twiddle thumbs and wait for the Spring

Thanks Bill.
The one thing that bugs me the most in this game is my misorder in Spring of '13, when I moved the wrong fleet in the Mediterranean. Had I ordered the moves correctly this would have been a much shorter war (FYI: GoL should have moved instead of TyS).
Bill, I think that had you not focused so much on the Mediterranean situation you could have brought some more troops into the Baltic area faster which would have stopped me from getting to the solo.
Key areas for me this game were Munich and Prussia. Munich stopped you from entering east. Prussia allowed me to move up through Russia.

Congratulations to Fredrik! I missed most of the interesting parts of the game, but the endgame had enough intrigue to keep me excited.
He seized the beautiful ground firstest with the mostest. I had recognized that I was essentially fighting a delay since I joined this game. I simply couldn't get enough combat power into the Baltic fast enough to breakthrough anywhere. The Fall that I seized Kiel and Joshua disbanded his German units was in my opinion the end of the game. I considered trying to eliminate Pat and Joshua to maximize my points, but just couldn't justify handing Fredrik a victory. Joshua did even better than I expected at delaying the Austrian conquest of the Russian heartland. We made him work for it; Fredrik earned the victory. Kudos.
Cheers all!

Subject: DC212 Peace In Our Time!! - Fall 1915 - Game Result: Austrian Solo Victory!
Heya folks!
The Arch-duke in red holds onto Moscow and the banners go up as Fall 1912 rolls around, Austria victorious. A hearty congratulations go to Fredrik for coming into the game and marching the position straight to a win. Hats off to our three survivors as well, though - Bill, Joshua and Pat. This game had it all - drama, passion and face-bending excitement. =)
There was one minor piece of business to take care of before the ribbon ceremony - the Russian unit in Norway was dislodged and forced to retreat. With only Finland available however, and with the game ending, I took the liberty and moved the piece there. (Joshua, if for some reason you'd prefer the piece to be removed on the final map then just let me know and I'll send out a correction.)
End-of-game statements are, of course, welcome and highly encouraged. My thanks to all of you players for taking part in the war effort. And with a happy heart, we sign the peace - though we know the next set-to is just around the corner.
Cheers everyone. Again, let us know what you think about the way things went with an EOG statement, if you'd like. See you all in the next one!

DC 218 SHIFT LEFT: Spring 1913 results. Fall 1913... - stephenworthy at rocke... (Aug 24, 2009, 1:34 am) |
To my mind:
Win = good result
Draw = okay result
Survival while other people draw = Survival while someone else wins = elimination = bad result
It doesn't matter how many centres you've got if you don't get a win or part of the draw, and that's exactly the approach the game rules imply. As it happens I've been going against my principles and voting for the draw recently, but only because I'm trying to pull out of diplomacy at the moment.

Stephen

pengie---that's not what i meant...i simply meant what i said, namely i won't vote for any non-DIAS draws....i have no illusions about my ability to decide the winner (i don't have that ability nor would i use it if i had it unless it were to help me win.)
as for my my caliber of my play--my position speaks for itself, i'm terrible...
for the record i think italy and germany are doing the best the can and both are in a far better position than i am so i'm the last one to cast aspersions on anyone else's ablity in this game and i will heartily and sincerely congratulate whomever wins or is in the draw.

Hey guys. I just wanted to send out an apology to you all. I have not been spending the proper amount of energy on this game and you all have been fantastic. Things have been a bit crazy with my semester starting again and I getting moving. Have you ever noticed that when stuff is really really slow and you've not much to do that when there is a hectic day or things start really moving again that you find you've just become lazy because you were so used to not doing much?? I hope so, so that you know I've been thrown from laze phase to need for speed. I apologize for the lack luster GMing over the last few weeks.
It is too late for me to adjudicate now, I have to be up in 6 hours and still have some assignments to finish but it will be done tomorrow. Also, I think I am missing a nation's orders. I will confirm what I have tonight, so make sure you're submitted for tomorrow.
I'm excited to see the results, it has been a good game for you guys.

DC212 Peace In Our Time!! - Fall 1915 - Game Resul... - former.trout (Aug 23, 2009, 11:47 pm) |

DC212 Peace In Our Time!! - Fall 1915 - Game Result: Austrian Solo Victory! (dc212) CPT23862 Aug 24, 01:05 am |
Kudos.
Cheers all!

DC 218 SHIFT LEFT: Spring 1913 results. Fall 1913... - FlapJack (Aug 23, 2009, 10:44 pm) |
pengie---that's not what i meant...i simply meant what i said, namely i won't vote for any non-DIAS draws....i have no illusions about my ability to decide the winner (i don't have that ability nor would i use it if i had it unless it were to help me win.)
as for my my caliber of my play--my position speaks for itself, i'm terrible...
for the record i think italy and germany are doing the best the can and both are in a far better position than i am so i'm the last one to cast aspersions on anyone else's ablity in this game and i will heartily and sincerely congratulate whomever wins or is in the draw.
game on!

I reaad those comments as
"Italy/Germany are not playing for the best position they can achieve but are happy to allow someone else to get a solo by Kingmaking."
At least now I know the calibre of players in this game,

[quote:8a4eb17177] Italy has taken that approach also. Neither one of us is big fish, but we're still here. Deal with it. ;o)

I'm afraid you're going to have to explain that comment to my slow Italian self. If you haven't been paying attention, I certainly AM playing for my best possible position, and it seems to me that Germany is in the lead...
