DC190 - Spring 2015 - bielf11   (Jun 19, 2009, 1:33 am)
Wow, that map has so much improved.I like the idea of the Artic Ocean; what I like in particular is that its ownership gives control over the only northern passageway but at the same time make that person very vulnerable to joint attacks; no fewer than 13 (!) spaces border the Arctic Ocean.
Just as nice is the new setup for N-Am and Mex. Only downside I see is for Mexico as it will be hard to move east from its home soil with N-Am in control of Miami and Havana. Perhaps a swap of Nunavut to N-Am and Havana to Mex offers a better balance.

The colours of the map are fine; it's the units I was struggling with . The smaller the image the more the various units' colours were starting to look alike.
If the colours alone don't work then perhaps add a letter to each unit's image representing its Power?

When we can we test-play the new map?

Hey there everyone, now that I have time to actually put forth some of my thoughts I think I will do so...

First of all, thanks for helping me test the map.  It's still a work in progress and the latest version is much different.  Any comments/suggestions are quite welcome.

Wow... sucks to be the guy that sees three people gang up on you (Austria in the standard, Europe in the this particular game).  I have to admit, there were certain powers for whom I was cheering, simply because I've played this map a few times and there are some who always seem to get the short end of the stick.  I'm starting to think that's the map and not the players.

Good job by Mexico in getting armies all over the place... you're right, it's tough to get yourself into places, but you were starting to get there.

South America: I might agree with you on needing more ocean spaces.  We kept the big ones on purpose because we wanted the game to get off to a quick start... don't think I'll change those.  But it might be a good idea to add some small shoreline spaces... we'll see.  Mid-game I got to play SAm for the first time and got kinda frustrated myself.

Africa: Too bad you two couldn't get along.  WAf was making good progress into Europe and I thought SAf had SAm on the ropes, but it wasn't meant to be, I suppose.

Oceania: That spot holds a special place in my heart because I actually managed to solo from there once... it's a tough place to defend though... not sure how to fix that.

Russia & China: Another place where I was convinced you would eventually work together, after meeting over NAm, but my prediction definitely never came to pass there.

Persia: Well done on the diplomacy... Persia can have many enemies, but also many allies... you balanced it well.

North America: Tough playing this game when you don't have allies... eventually people start eating away at your territory... but I know Dan, and he's used to that by now...

I certainly enjoyed GMing most of the time... toward the end it got a little tedious because nothing was really happening.  Rules say I can't tell you what was actually going on, but maybe it'll come out in an EOG somewhere.

A quick question about the colours... I've tried to make them as distinct as I can... but it's kinda tough to find 10 distinct colours... any suggestions?

mvp

ps. I'll attach the newest version of the map... a few things to note:

1) it solves the problem of Mexico being stuck between NAm and SAm right away, but makes it tough to come up with names for those powers.
2) Global warming has made it easier to attack using the Arctic Ocean, which goes across the entire north of the map.
3) I've made more attempts to try to help Europe in the attempt to hold off Russia... don't know if it'll work.

This map has yet to be played.

As for my EGS - thanks to Michael for running this throughout and putting up with my last minute orderingSmile

For an EGS...whew.  Since this game began I've changed my state, job, car, and kept adding animals.  For the lack of diplomacy at far too many points with many of you - my apologies.  I normally try to remain more involved, and having gone into 4 simultaneous games while all that was going on didn't help.

But thanks for all for being patient and working with me (or providing opponents to tax my thought!).

Loved the map, although I'd have liked just a tad more ocean space - just divide ATL, PAC, TON, and SAN in half would yaSmile - but thats not a criticism, just a personal preference - packing together like that drew us into conflict and made things mad from the start!

As to the course of the game...initially I looked for allies and found, to my dismay, that everyone was too friendly for me to want to attack outright - so I intended to play it slow.  A promising non aggression pact with Mexico and promises of neutrality from all my neighbors left me in a spot...but not for long.  My worst nightmare came about when South and West Africa pushed off my shores after both agreeing to DMZs - and after I made most of my buildable centers on the west coast.  Point against my logic there.

From there I pretty much planned to go down fighting - until to my amazement, the joint attack didn't materialize and Africa quickly turned towards squabbling.  Naturally I pressed my advantage and took the seas back - and then dithered.  I couldn't decide which I wanted to back, and contact seemed sporadic with both.  Having talked very little to Oceania (my own fault, and sorry about that Frank) I naturally leaned towards Pacific expansion, and I admit that had been my tendency all along.

But somewhere amongst my in game dithering and real life chaos I saw that China was pushing for footholds in North America and seemed happily allied with, well, everyone but Mexico and North America.  Europe was fast falling and so I figured Mexico was soon to get hit from two sides, after seeing North America slowly get eaten by China.  So I figured, heck - why not see if South America could keep China honest and maybe even lead an attack on him.  I admit I made it a bit of a project to see if I could actively do anything to harm China - from whom I was separated by a big wide ocean.  Didn't hurt that he stabbed Persia...

Well, that worked - my fleets flopped around while I kept switching sides in the African wars, and eventually Mexico had North America and Europe was gone.  I pushed everyone to hit China, and probably independently of my pushing they all did - except for Oceania.  While I liked his tenacity in sticking with his ally...I got frustrated that he wouldn't finish China off.  So I started moving on him with a willing Mexico helping.  About the same time the deal I cut with South Africa to take a couple of his centers in exchange for hitting West Africa took shape, and then a combination of lack of communication from him and my own greedy temptation led me to turn and hit HIM.

From seemingly certain defeat I somehow was in a dominant position versus three neighbors, and that continued.  I started proposing 4 way draws when it became apparent that Persia and Russia would not fight, and I honestly voted for them every time.  Heck, I'd vote a DIAS at game start if I could actually convince everyone to go for it.  I and Mexico raced Persia for Africa and tried to get Mexico on every continent.  And just as Mexico and I might have actually broken through in Africa and the Indian (was going for CON and IND and hoping to establish the final stalemate line from Egypt - Mumbai) the draw was voted in.

Good playing with you all and I'd be happy to game with you again.  Take care and thanks!

Andrew

Oceania seemed to do well while allied with China. From the start Mexico and S-America had picked me as their target. My communication with S-America was polite and straightforward. With Mexico however I experienced the opposite. From that moment on Mexico was my one and only enemy. China and I tried our luck at Persia but he impressed me with clever orders to resist our efforts. Russia and Persia in the end gave China such a hard time that he ended up loosing SCs. When China started to go down, Oceania was left facing Mexico and S-America alone. I tried to convince S-America to drop his alliance with Mexico but he wasn't to be persuaded. I tried one more dash at S-America, although had I been able to attack Mexico I certainly would have preferred that, but as expected this foolery of mine only give me a very short-lived victory over a local lord at the cost of my units around New-Zealand.

Early in the game I had tried to get South-Africa to join me and China but hardly ever heard anything back (too many balls in the air, right?).
Loved the map and the flexibility of picking Home SCs. Not as easy as it seems and definitely impacts the game further on.
Michael did a great job as GM; always timely with adjudications and never too bothered with late orders (thanks for all the reminders).
I would definitely sign up again for one of your games.

Couldn't agree more on the colours!Absolutely enjoyed the game until perhaps 4 turns ago. As another player with only few units left, I kept moving them around trying to postpone the worst. Was surprised how little use was made of the power of the small Powers! Would have made it more interesting, I think. Like Mike said, why did we have to wait until now to get all Aye's on the votes? No substantial gains were made since we started voting.

[quote:b5a3642b75] Also just to add, very nice map.  I enjoyed the early game a lot, with the choosing of home centers.  That was a neat twist that I havent seen in any other variant.  If there is one thing to fix, it would be to make Persia and China substantially different colors.  For us red-green deficient ones, those two looked way too close, along with W.Africa.

Thank you all, gentlemen, for an intriguing game. I'm not as
experienced as most of you guys seem to be, and I thought I made a few
avoidable errors - so I was happy to have survived at all. The
Russian/Persian/W African alliance worked very well at the start, but
then I got into a fight with S Africa (which I tried to avoid, and then
had to dive into with a fatal compromise with S Am). Persia was
propping me up at the end.

Favourite moment was landing in Mexica. Nice burritos.

Really enjoyed it, so thanks to everyone for playing, and I raise a
glass in appreciation for Mike's excellent GM work. Like the new map
as well, and I agree on the unit differentiation.

Well done to the big four. West Africa signing off.

Nice new map!  Again, having only played South America I can only speak to my experience there, and I suspect that many of the other powers had similar concerns - but SA does seem more than others to have the potential to get stuck in mid game or easily crushed by an early WA/SA push west - by end of the first year its probably that alliance could take the Sandwich, St Helena, and Ascencion Seas and maybe even drop an army into the Amazon.  That happens and South America is effectively done year 2 - and there's not really anyone who can directly help.  And since WA and SA look to me to be natural allies as long as they have any trust, I think they could pull that off and be in amazingly good position versus everyone else.

Any way there could be an additional sea space south of ARG - maybe allow transit of the Antarctic waters?  If we're talking global warming perhaps even Antarctica as a ownable space could pull Oceania, South Africa, and South America into an interesting triangle...

Maybe Sudan could be an SC for South Africa in place of Luanda or Dar Es Salaam?  Might allow for a bit more tension in Africa and entice South Africa to look more north?  Would make the Red Sea awful funSmile

I actually didn't get that frustrated with playing SA - just once the Africas were under control and Mexico was allied, my choices of outlets were few.  But hey, I got to influence in a minor way the war over China so hey, can't complain!

Just thoughts though - I've zero experience building these maps (though I'm getting tempted to try my hand).

Thanks again!

I've thought about adding Antarctica, but the map I used to build this off of didn't have it and also with the concept of choosing starting spots, I'd have to decide whose spot that would be to begin with.  If I added Antarctica it would just be as a space to land, much like Greenland or Iceland.

Just so you know some of the things that went into thinking the map over:

1. No power's starting spot is next to another players starting spot (which is why Sudan wouldn't be an sc, because it's right next to Cairo).

2. Any sea space that is shared by more than one power is shared equally at the beginning.  So the Red Sea borders one sc each from Persia, WAf, and SAf; the Gulf of Mexico borders two sc's each from Mex and NAm (in lieu of better names).

The idea of the Arctic Ocean was an attempt to make Russia more vulnerable to attack... every game that was played on the other map had a strong Russia, so I figured something probably had to be done about it.

I'll work on making more differentiable units, if that was the main problem... but for now, does anyone have ideas as to how I can name these powers?  It doesn't really make sense to call them Mexico and North America any more...

West America/East America, or Pacific/Atlantica?

Yeah, I'm boring

I thought of Antarctica as just an empty space.

My only thought with South America is that WA can hit Ascension from turn one with two, and SA can hit St Helena with two.  No matter what, SA can lose one, and when one goes the other is likely to follow.

Just a thought.  If you've seen more games where SA has done fine all is well!

Oh, I almost forgot, we've tried to spice up the rules a bit to make the game perhaps a little quicker and more likely for someone to go for the solo:

1. Solo victory at 25 sc's
2. When a player gets eliminated, those powers controlling his home centers may trade their original building centers for one of the conquered centers.  So, for example, when China was eliminated, Russia could have given up the ability to build in Moscow for the ability to build in Taiwan.  This trading could only happen during the same winter in which a power is eliminated.

I think these rule changes would make the game much more interesting in the later stages of the game.

It's over? Really? I've been getting more and more paranoid and had
convinced myself that a stab was coming this year.

What can I say about DC190? Well, firstly, thanks to our GM for running
it and running it well.

Those were probably the best opening years I've played. A combined
assault from me, Persia, and West Africa left Europe without a chance.
It was lovely. Well, I enjoyed it.

That left me with a problem. North America to the west was already
falling and too far away for me to grab more than a nibble, Persia to
the south was an ally, and China to the east (while not an ally) had
certainly been friendly and could easily have taken advantage of me in
the early years. In the end I went with continuing my alliance with
Persia and spread east. A good choice and it was a good alliance until
I went into hold-mode.

With China as good as gone and North America fallen there didn't seem
much left to do. I could stab Persia, but that would've been suicidal.
A couple of times I considered slipping some fleets south to see what
could be done, but I always decided it would be risk for little gain. I
went into hold-mode, settled for a draw, and went quiet (not that I'm
ever a great communicator).

The Paris problem and my worries towards the end could've ended the
four-way draw that finished, so I'm pleased with the result.

Did Russia have a strong opening position on the map? Certainly one of
the stronger positions. The globe circling Arctic Ocean will reduce
that. When there's a game recruiting for the new map then I'll put my
name down.

ALGIERS - Sources indicate that the war has finally come to an end!
In a meeting hosted by the Algerian president, the G4 (consisting of
Mexican, South American, Russian and Persian dignitaries) signed a
peace treaty, agreeing to end hostilities. This comes after 14 years
of bitter fighting and many attempts at reaching that elusive peace
deal. A signing ceremony is scheduled for tomorrow after official
documents have been prepared.

Just to make it clear to everyone: we've agreed to a four-way draw
between Mexico, South America, Persia and Russia, with West Africa and
Oceana getting survivals. Good game everyone... I look forward to
hearing more about it.

dc246 fall 1912 results! - coryfucius   (Jun 18, 2009, 4:00 pm)
England continues to flood the Med with blue fleets, while both Turkey and Austria overcome French resistance around Italy. England overwhelms the Turkish army in Bohemia and defends Munich against an Austrian invasion.

A total of 3 units are dislodged, but only two have autumn retreat orders due:
The French army in Piedmont has no valid retreats and is destroyed.
The French fleet in Tyrrhenian Sea may retreat to Tuscany or OTB.
The Turkish army in Bohemia may retreat to Vienna or OTB.

Winter adjustments will be as follows:
Austria: remove 1
England: build 1 (banked from 1911)
France: no change, regardless of retreat
Turkey: build 1 (or build 2 if retreat OTB)

Both the autumn retreats and winter adjustments will be due tomorrow, Friday 6/19 at 3pm Central (US) / 20:00 GMT.

Here's the short version of the Fall 1912 adjudication:

France:

There are no retreats, so the only order due tomorrow is the French adjustment (from the S1912 disbanded fleet in Apulia).

The draw proposal fails. Perhaps somebody knows something you don't? It's probably your ally. Stab him now, before he stabs you!

Simon,

I don't like the game to end this way. I think the game deserves an proper finale to give credit to the players that enjoyed it and also for the efforts you have put in. I'm not just saying that because I'm in the lead, if that's what people might think.

There must be another way.
Can't we ask the Light Brigade to step in for players that no longer (want to) play?

OK, it’s bad news gentlemen.

The deadline has passed. I have received orders from just 2 players (France and Germany), but votes on the game end proposal from 3 ( 2 votes for a DIAS and 1 against). I am guessing that other players have voted with their feet, or their emails to both of my addresses have disappeared into the void (which I consider highly unlikely).

I have decided that this game is null and void. Clearly some strange technical issues have come into play and have hopelessly compromised the game. I deeply regret this as DC251 was shaping up nicely. Thanks for your time and interesting play. Sorry that it has had to end like this.

Best wishes

I would like to ask that each of you always double check that the orders you have sent me and what I post as the results match. I don't make many mistakes, but they probably will occur from time to time and the more eyes looking at it the better the chances that they are caught. Especially as the game gets more complex.

Emperor,
Your request for assistance in removing the Turks from Vienna comes as a bit of a surprise to me. You see, my only means of support comes from Budapest, which is sure to be cut from Rum & Bul. On the other hand, if Boh supports Bud -> Vie, that support cannot be cut. But if I don't hear back from you, I will order Bud to support your attack and hope for the best.

England,
We face a strong foe with the Turk. He does not talk to anyone, and yet he has the lion's share of centers right now. This is not a good sign for our future. Let us not fight over the Med, but support each other and hold the stalemate line.

Best wishes
Simon

All,

I sent in orders on June 14. I've been on the road, so I couldn't check for acknowledgement.

I don't like it either, but as Russia (despite his protests about lost orders), Austria and turkey have made no contact I cannot see how we can proceed. It is not feasible to replace half of the players when the game is at this stage.

Dear all

Although I got this message from Matthew to both of my addresses, I did not get his orders. The game is hopelessly compromised and I no longer have any appetite for finding a solution.

DC 220 Update - Verticallychallangedcutie   (Jun 17, 2009, 12:50 pm)
Folks,
As much as I would love to set a deadline for you guys, we are still waiting for a new Austria. As soon as someone joins I'll send out the information and a new deadline. Also I will be on the road starting on the 23rd. My husband is getting out of the Navy after 7 long years and we are moving to Maryland to be close to family. We should be on the road sometime on the 23rd and I'm guessamating that we should have some type of internet access around the 26th or 27th. I'll shoot an email out when we get back online.
