RP Files - diplomacyworld   (Jun 14, 2009, 11:36 am)
I'm still looking for anyone who is willing to build RP files for a few variants (I'm too stupid, and too involved in so many other projects, to get it done myself).

If you're interested, please email me at diplomacyworld(at)yahoo.com

I can't pay you with CASH, but I have a few used games I can give you a choice of, or new and used DVDs you can choose from, and possibly a Diplomacy World t-shirt.

And, of course, others will be able to make use of your work when its done too, so you help the hobby as a whole!

What variants did you need made up? They take about 3 hours to do, if you have a good starting black and white image. There’s quite a few ppl who have been known to make them. Generally if there’s a variant I’m interested to play or see played, I don’t mind making the files for it…

Assuming someone hasn't done these yet (and I haven't found them anywhere if they have):

Colinia VII-B
Balkan Wars VI
Woolworth II-B
1499: The Italian Wars
African Diplomacy (by Phil Reynolds)
Cline 9-Man

Those are the ones off the top of my head. Oh and Youngstown XIII, which I haven't been able to find a copy of in any form recently (Jeff Suchard did that version).

Phil Reynolds - now there's a name I haven't seen in a while.

I have his map and rules from his old zine in the early 90's, is there a "newer" version?

Ambition & Empire: The Relative Merits of the... - vonpowell   (Jun 14, 2009, 12:00 am)
Hey Gang,

I realize I'm late to this discussion and many of you have moved on to other projects, but I still wanted to say a few words about the relative strengths and weaknesses of each of the Powers.

I realize that no one has been calling for the Powers to be exactly equal in strength. If that were our goal, we would all be playing Migraine. Since we are not extolling the virtues of Migraine and we are all fans of Standard Diplomacy, I think we can agree that absolute equality is not a prerequisite for variant design.

The question then becomes this: how much disparity is acceptable in the relative strengths of the Powers before we consider the variant too imbalanced to be enjoyable? Clearly, that disparity cannot be too large or people will shun the variant simply to avoid being stuck with Power X.

Standard Diplomacy's Italy is the one Power that most people complain about as being too weak, yet it is clearly not so badly off that folks have stopped playing Standard.

In 1900, even though only a relatively small sample size was in available (just over 40 games at the time), I was hearing enough negative buzz about Russia's poor play to be convinced that I needed to make a change that strengthened Russia or risk losing my audience. After making that change by introducing the vaunted Steamroller, I again received enough negative feedback to tell me that I had to tone Russia down or again risk having 1900 drift into the category of variants that are imbalanced and unplayable. Hence the Russian Emergency Measures Rule. So far, so good.

The question then must be asked: are the ten Powers in A&E sufficiently viable that a player can be assigned any of them and still have a reasonable expectation of success? While Jeff and I are optimistic, the jury is clearly still out.

Certainly, many of the players that participate in an A&E game do so for reasons that go beyond merely playing diplomacy. I suspect a significant number of A&E players are historians of sorts and that the map/rules of the variant appeal to them in some aesthetic way. If I'm correct, these players are willing to cut the variant some slack, at least initially, because they would be offended on some level by a Poland that could stand toe-to-toe with Russia or a Denmark that could make the Royal Navy tremble in fear. Such circumstances would so violate historical reality that they would seem contrived.

At the same time, even the most ardent supporter of Poland & Saxony as a played Power or the most die-hard fan of Sweden would eventually have to admit that a game where these two Powers are regularly crushed under the heels of more powerful neighbors is simply not that good a game. This being the case, Jeff and I have had to balance at least a semblance of historical accuracy against playability. Over the course of the game's evolution, Jeff and I (and many others) have discussed and implemented several ideas designed to enhance the relative playability of the smaller Powers without completely sacrificing the historical feel of post Seven Years War Europe. These ideas have included establishing buffers where non existed previously (e.g., Dresden initially consisted of all of Saxony...only later did we insert Lusatia), changing the internal configurations of certain Powers (e.g., Spain now is arranged very differently from how it was initially), limiting the number of DPs a power can have, making neutrals more accessible to Powers that otherwise had no access to them (e.g., the addition of Courland and Crimea), and allowing the 2-SC Powers to claim a third home SC.

Are these changes enough? Jeff and I hope so. I think we both have become rather fond of A&E's small children and we cheer for their success. I for one would be devastated to see an A&E map without Poland & Saxony as a played Power (and I couldn't have been happier when it actually won a game some time ago). Only time will tell, however. If, after a significant number of games have been played, we determine that the variant requires tweaking, then you can be assured we will do so. Right now, however, I don't believe we are anywhere close to that point.

BTW... I have been somewhat amused by the general consensus of this group that Britain & Hanover is one of the "Big Boys" of A&E, along with Austria. Curiously, after a recent game in which Russia raced to a solo, the general consensus was that Russia was a monster that was likely to win more games than just about any other Power, with the possible exceptions of Austria and France. After all, four of Russia's neighbors (Denmark-Norway, Sweden, Poland & Saxony, and Prussia) were all "terminally weak," Austria was likely to be preoccupied in Germany and Italy, and the "rational Sultan" would head for the Mediterranean rather than north into Crimea. By the time Austria and Turkey were aware of the danger, Russia would have crushed it Scandinavian and Central European neighbors, and would be cruising to victory. It would be so easy.

Funny... In this game Russia's northern and central neighbors were weak for many of the early years, Austria did focus on Germany and Italy, and Turkey did sail into Mediterranean waters. Despite all of this and a very capable Tsar at the helm, Russia didn't explode to victory. In fact, it was barely a factor in the game's final outcome. How strange.

The fact remains that all of the people who have been following A&E for a while now have seen every Power, to include the supposed weaklings, have fantastic games where they looked absolutely dominant, and horrible games where they struggled to avoid elimination right out of the blocks. Even mighty Austria has been humbled by bad starts.

All this means that I look forward to Nick's next game. I'm eager to see which Powers will exceed expectations and which Powers will look dead in the water after only one bad turn.

Happy Stabbing

Baron

Ambition & Empire: The Relative Merits of the Powers (dc240) warren_k_ball@yahoo.com Jun 14, 01:31 pm
Hey Baron,

Was it 1900 or A&E, where a 2-sc player got eliminated in only a year or 2? I remember being in that game & u were the GM.

Was the variant changed after that game? I don't know because it's been several years since I played. If things haven't changed, I would argue about the balance.

While I like the historical flavor, I would think it patently unfair that some 2-sc powers can b eliminated at game start, when 3 & 4-sc players could not.

Warren

More fun messages: I should have just marked it a misorder. I thought I was maybe being helpful to one who didn't know better. Bottom line: this is a game about orders and clarity. If you are lazy with your orders you are lazy in your game play.

DC 225 Update - AlanRFarrington   (Jun 13, 2009, 12:49 pm)
Hey Guys,

I know you're all waiting for Fall 1907 Adjudication and I promise I'll have it out as soon as I get the last set of orders in.

In other news though, Jyri is taking a couple week vacation and has stated that he wishes Michael Stroz (Italy) and Michael Holm (Turkey) to write his orders while he is away. Their orders will only be valid if both order the same moves. This arrangement will take place Autumn 07 (if needed) and last until Jyri returns from his outting.

Thank you all,
Alan Farrington

PS If you haven't gotten your orders in or would like to change DO IT SOON.

DC224 Slaughter At StoryTime - Early Winter 07 - T... - former.trout   (Jun 13, 2009, 12:24 am)
Hi guys and better halves...

The Archers retreat to Critter Country, the Wizards take a trip to Anhondo Plain and the Hobbits resign themselves off the board.

My apologies for sending out the Summer .dpw file last turn, instead of the Fall.  Tonight I've hopefully attached the Early Winter .dpw file - which contains the Fall turn plus the happy happy retreats.

Deadline for Winter 07 orders will be set for Monday, June 15th (11:59 PM GMT).  Please note that my build count was incorrect last turn, and the Pirates gain a build which I had failed to note.

Let me know if you spot any other mistakes.  Also, I have attached the latest rev of the .map file which has several of the latest glitches fixed and ironed out.  (Mostly the Land Of Sweets area, which seemed rife with mistakes - but also the Hidden Grotto glitch.)

Cheers!

dc246 winter 1911 adjustments - coryfucius   (Jun 12, 2009, 4:35 pm)
France fails to submit removal orders, so I will order auto-disbands per the Blitz tournament rules First priority is to remove "Units furthest from the nearest home center before units closer to the nearest home center." Here, that settles the matter, as 3 French units are 2 spaces away from a home center, and 3 units are nearer. Elsewhere, England and Turkey each raise fresh armies, England banking one build for later.

Spring 1912 orders will be due Monday 6/15 at 3pm Central (US) / 20:00 GMT. Prelims are strongly encouraged!

Cory

DC262: Angstskrik - Dark Ages Game Number Assignme... - Kenshi777   (Jun 12, 2009, 2:21 pm)
Players -

The public peanut gallery option has been voted down, but no worries there, we proceed with the game.

Mike - if you still want to participate in a private (sent to GM and other kibitzers only, not the list or players) kibitzer panel, I can assemble one (I think I know a few others that might be interested) and receive all commentary privately, which I will collect and publish with a full Realpolitik game history upon completion of the game.  Let me know, and I'll be glad to do that.

In other news, we have our game number!  This is game of Dark Ages V3 is now officially branded as DC 262: Angstskrik, with much gratitude to our hosts at Diplomatic Corp.

Enjoy your game!

Your GM,
B.

I had not yet posed that question to the players Mike, but this seems a suitable time to do so.

Players - there has been some discussion of possibly running this game as a peanut gallery game, where a set panel of commentators maintains an ongoing public commentary on the DC message board on anything and everything with the game - their thoughts on the strategies and tactics of the players, their predictions of what they'll do next, map design and variant dynamics etc. etc. plus of course, all the comical press they can think up.

This can be very entertaining, and is priceless from a variant design perspective, to iron out any bugs in the variant.  First and foremost however, this is *your* game, set up for *your* enjoyment.  You seven have absolute veto authority over this, and need not identify yourself publicly with your vote.  Please contact me privately with your preference on whether or not to run this as a peanut gallery game.  I will announce the results when all votes are in.  Peanut gallery games can be great fun, but I have also found some people that did not like them in the past.  So if anyone is opposed, we will not allow this feature, but I do ask all to consider the option.

That said, we have received confirmation from all seven players, so Mike, if I may have a game number, we'll get the game underway.  Once I have all the votes, we'll see if the peanut gallery option is enacted, and if so, assemble a panel of commentators.

Everyone was able to get either their first or second choice of position, courtesy of a few kind souls that voiced no preference Smile  Without further ado, may I introduce:

Appears as: DCXXX: Angstskrik - Anglo-Saxons Spring 825 Final Orders

This helps me ensure that only your final set of orders are used in adjudication.  Thanks for your assistance with this.

Finally the all important part - Spring 825 deadline is Thursday, June 23 2009, 1700 EST.  Please send prelims as soon as possible, to ensure that we have no NMRs.  I ask that everyone submit prelims as soon as possible after adjudications to ensure that this is an NMR-free game enjoyable for everyone.  Don't forget to send your votes on the peanut-gallery option ASAP too.  Please use and check the Diplomatic Corp page often for most current maps and all other game materials.  I have attached the starting map here for your convenience.  I also encourage everyone to download and use the Realpolitik files for this variant, available on the Diplomatic Corp variant page.  This game is being played on the most current version of Dark Ages, Version 3 - *be certain YOU are using that version* - on both the map and the Realpolitik files.

*whew* - that should be it.  Please, if anyone has any house rules, DC core rules, variant specific, or any questions at all - let's hear them as many of them as possible during this period before the first season is adjudicated.  That aside, have fun - let the negotiations and the plunder of nations begin!

Your GM -

Just a quick confirmation before we kick off the latest round of Dark Ages -
please give me a reply to this email to confirm that you are still on board
and committed to playing this game.  Include a copy of your country
preferences (if any) if I do not have them already.

If anyone does need to back out for any reason, we do have an 8th player,
Jorge Saralegui, ready and waiting.  Please advise if so...otherwise...as
soon as I have 7 confirmations, we'll open this game and get it underway!

Welcome to the Dark Ages!

Gene, I take your point about extending the deadline and sending out an email to see if you were still OK. However, if I had done that, your reply would not have got to me either, so all that we'd have seen is a one week delay, followed by your NMR.

It has been suggested by another player that NMR does in fact mean No Move "Received". This means the onus is on you as players to make sure I have received them, and not on me to chase around to see if you have sent them.

Congrats Nigel!  And "Great job" to the rest of you who kept him at bay for so long!
When I left the game in 1906, everyone claimed that I handed Nigel a victory and the game would end very quickly.  You played your hearts out to make the game last until 1911.

Finally, thanks to Garry for GMing.  And good luck all in the rest of the tourney.

French armies, ignoring the threat to Paris, slide westward toward Italy, and the French navy supports England's advance into the Mediterranean. We bid farewell to Italy - thanks for playing, Michael! There is no change to the Turkish or Austrian positions compared to the results I sent yesterday.

Two units are dislodged, but no retreat orders will be due as a result.
The French fleet in Naples has no valid retreats and is destroyed.
The Italian fleet in Tunis could retreat to North Africa. Since Italy has no centers left, it would be removed in the winter anyway, so I'm retreating it OTB.

Winter adjustments are as follows:
England: build 3 (Garry, you get an extra build vs. yesterday's result)
France: remove 3 (unchanged vs. yesterday)
Turkey: build 2 (unchanged vs. yesterday)

The winter 1911 adjustments will still be due at the same time, which is now today, Friday 6/12 at 3pm Central (US) / 20:00 GMT. Sorry for the confusion, everyone!

Cory

DC251 Shadowplay, Winter 1904 adjudication - Alcore   (Jun 12, 2009, 8:46 am)
I accept the fault of not having dug up your alternate email address
sooner.

I suggest that you treat failure to recieve orders for a power as
grounds for extending the deadline one week, and send out a "are you
still alive email" specifically to missing powers.

I don't know what the fundamental issue is, but It's game changing.
Which is a shame.

I vote in favor of both game end proposals. If both win, I prefer the
all-way draw.

AAAAAAAARGH!
Problems:
It seems that we have some major problems here. It is claimed by
certainly Russia, and maybe Germany, that for some reason my email
account (Simon.Langley-Evans(at)Nottingham.ac.uk
<mailto:Simon.Langley-Evans(at)Nottingham.ac.uk> ) has taken a dislike to
some of you and is not letting orders through. This is obviously a
disaster, but I cannot see any reason for this to happen:
1) None of your messages are in my Junk e mail folder. This is
where most material that our system rejects ends up and I have checked
through it all very carefully.
2) All of the players in this game are on my Safe Senders list.
3) I have checked that none of you are on my blocked senders list.
4) I have previously received orders from you all using this
account, without any problems.

So, as you can see, this is a mystery that is beyond my IT skills to
solve. From my perspective, I can only process the orders that I
receive. If I see nothing then I must assume that nothing has been sent.
I'm just a humble GM trying to do a good job, but can only work within
my technological limits.

Whilst I appreciate that this causes major inconvenience to players who
have been affected, I would point out that I contacted everyone quite a
long time ago to give an alternative email address (
Simon_Langley-Evans(at)o2.co.uk <mailto:Simon_Langley-Evans(at)o2.co.uk> ). I
would recommend that you all send your orders to both of my addresses to
make sure that they get through. I always acknowledge orders as they
come in, so if you send orders and hear nothing from me, then it means
there is a problem and you need to chase them up.
Simon_Langley-Evans(at)o2.co.uk <mailto:Simon_Langley-Evans(at)o2.co.uk> has
no spam filters so everything should get through, but queries can always
be posted on the message board.

Solution:
There is nothing I can do to reinstate any Fall 1904 orders that may
have gone astray. The game has moved on since then and neither of the
players who NMRd at that time took steps to indicate that there was a
problem at the time of that adjudication, which was some time ago now.
It would be relatively straightforward to have done so, either through
the DC message board, through another player or through Steve or Former
Trout. So, the Fall 04 adjudication stands.

However, I will make an amendment to the Winter 1904 adjudication and
allow Russia to build his Army StP. I will send out the amended maps
with this email. This seems to be the fairest thing I can do, and I hope
that you're all happy with this.

Game End Proposals:
We have two game end proposals for you to vote on. Please send your vote
with your next set of orders. Remember, for a proposal to be carried, it
must be an unanimous decision. If you abstain it will be treated as a
"no" vote. The proposals are:

1. Draw including all survivors
2. 2 way victory for France and England.

Sorry for all of the troubles. I really do not have a clue what is going
on here and am desperately disappointed that whatever it is has impacted
on your enjoyment of the game. New maps are attached. Deadline is next
week as advertised.
