DC224 SAS - Spring 07 Extension - former.trout   (May 22, 2009, 2:30 am)
Heya folks,

Apologies to all of ya.  There was an extension request made last weekend, and due to other things happening at the time it almost slipped my mind.

Due to player request, the Spring 07 deadline is pushed forward to Tuesday, May 26th (11:59 PM GMT).

Cheers all.  Have a great weekend!

DC-230 Lost Kings Of Lore - Fall 1905 - Long Night... - former.trout   (May 22, 2009, 2:25 am)
Hey folks,

A few twists and turns this Fall season.  Germany supports the Tsar in his Sevastopol bunker, Italy manages to cover the land but not the Sea and the Arch-Duke secures a seat in Smyrna.

There was a single retreat owed from the Italian in the Tyrrhenian Sea, but as the Ionian was the only open space on the board I took the liberty.  Bruce, if OTB is preferred, then please just let me know.  Otherwise, we'll set the Winter 1905 deadline for Sunday, May 24th (11:59 PM GMT).

Let me know if you spot any errors in the adjudication.  Cheers!

A&E 090205 / DC240: Auf Wiedersehn, Kaiser Mar... - NickHiggins   (May 21, 2009, 10:17 pm)
A&E 090205 / DC240: The Fall 1769 season has been adjudicated. We've lost our second player, Mark Utterback, whose last army was expelled from Berlin this fall. Thanks for playing Mark.

It was a weird season, at least from my view. Frank apparently made up with both Denmark and France, with the result that the British gains from the stab of Denmark last year were reversed, and the Turkish army's stay in Paris was short-lived. Overall, there was not much movement in the standings, with Britain (+1) and Denmark (+2) strengthening their holds on 1st and 2nd place respectively, and France and Prussia (both -1) at the other end.

I need one retreat order, from Turkey for their fleet in the Western Med. I will adjudicate as soon as it is received. The deadline for Winter 1769 is Mon May 25th.

We have 3 sets of press this week, including an always appreciated "peanut gallery" submission.

PRESS #1: Russian
Russia to UK: I'm not the anonymous press writer, but I appreciate it as well.

PRESS #2: British
England to Denmark/Norway: Might have been too tough to do, David. Did we both proceed as planned?

England to Turkey: Robert, it came down to your unwillingness to let me help.
All information I had this year is that you will be losing the Western
Med, which cripples your defense of North Africa. Assuming that Jorge would continue to press, and that he has easy builds for the taking in Budapest,
Savoy, etc, I needed to side with somebody who could help me stop an
Austrian solo. I don't plan on taking any Turkish centers (after Paris, which I needed to shore that front), but my fleets are heading through Gibalter, if they can.

England to Austria: I'd trade positions with you if I could. You've done a masterful job winning the DP battle in Italy all these years.

England
to France: If I were in your shoes, I would have stabbed me. I gambled
that you did not. If you didn't, then I'm in Paris and our wall against
Austria and Spain will look very nice.

England to Prussia: Sorry Mark. I was with you in the spring, but when I needed to reconcile with David, I couldn't support you.

England to Peanut Gallery: I suck. I won't be surprised in the least if France and Denmark worked against me, and I just stabbed the only person still on my side.

PRESS #3: Peanut Gallery

There once was a player named Frank
Draw claims were only a prank
He went for the win
Let's toast him with gin
He better hope he's not shooting a blank

dc246 fall 1908 results! - coryfucius   (May 21, 2009, 4:29 pm)
Both remaining central powers fall victim to the neighbors at their respective backsides, although Italy's attack on the Ionian Sea actually contributed to his being overrun by French forces. Meanwhile, England grabs the vacant Holland and holds on to the French centers he occupied in the spring.

Two autumn retreats are due, both from France.
The French fleet in the Ionian Sea may retreat to Aegean Sea, Apulia, Tunis, Tyrrhenian Sea, or OTB
The French army in Tyrolia may retreat to Piedmont or OTB.

Winter adjustments will be as follows:
Austria: remove 2
England: build 3
France: remove 1 (no change or build 1 depending on retreats)
Italy: remove 2
Turkey: build 2

Both the retreat and adjustment orders will be due tomorrow, Friday 5/22 at 3pm Central (US) / 20:00 GMT.

Orders required tomorrow from Austria, England, Italy, and Turkey.

So, the irony has not escaped you, I'm sure. Just when the Black Knights had repulsed the White Knights, along come little green men (and little red men, too) to suddenly reverse the trend. England storms the Lowlands -- we sadly bit adieu to Michael, who held out valiantly past any reasonable hope. France surges into the Ionian, setting off a chain reaction that ends in the destruction of the Russian army in Trieste.

And so it's time to build! (Both retreating armies, in Belgium and Trieste, have nowhere to go). England wins two builds. Italy wins one, too. Turkey re-builds. Austria must remove.

DC-244 Summer 1456 Adjudication - TheWhiteWolf   (May 21, 2009, 6:28 am)
Thank you, Ross. That saves me the trouble of finding that rule. I never can remember what order I put those darn things in.

Louis, if this is your resignation, then I accept it. You will be assigned an "Abandon" status under this game, which is in itself a form of punitive action. You will also earn the disfavor of every player on this board, and I believe word of mouth to be stronger than any other existing sanction.
If, however, you misunderstood my house rules, and still wish to remain in the game, we'd be happy to have you. Please just let me know as soon as possible, so that I don't assign you that "Abandon" label or put the game on the recruiting page.

Folks,
This turn we say goodbye to Germany as his last remaining unit is disbanded off the board. Josh thanks for playing and we hope the rest of your deployment goes well and that you are home soon.

Also I know I may not always sent out a deadline reminder but I am not required to do so. After some rough events in another game and after some advice from the Mods I've decided to crack down on the deadlines just a bit. If you do not have your orders into me by the deadline I will NMR you. No more waiting a few days after writing the person to see if they send in orders. Once I start writing the adjudication the NMR goes into effect.

DC 216 Children of the Light EoG - coebq   (May 21, 2009, 3:16 am)
All,

I only have a limited perspective as I jumped in late as a replacement.

First, thanks to my fellow players and thanks especially to Jason for GMing. Jason always has a lot of patience for us "orders laggards," and I both appreciate that as well as apologize for the any delays I may have caused in this one. I don't really have a legitimate excuse, but no sooner had I signed on to play, than I came under fire from what seemed to be every direction in the real world.

The upside was that Midlands, it seems, had recently been the big dog of the board and I had been handed what appeared to be a pretty solid starting position and all the other players were immediately open and communicative. The downside was that Midlands had been the big dog of the board and what looked like a solid position was actually a strategic retreat in progress as a couple of other players had just handed Midlands its shorts.

And while indeed everyone was open to a conversation, it was apparent from the beginning that there was little hope to change the already well established balance of play around the board. Again, not that people were not open to ideas--everyone listened and commented (or at least paid lip service to my BS) I just couldn't find any strategic logic (even the fuzzy type) that I could use to persuade either Borderlands or Westlands to attack each other, or support me in some other way. Conversely, it was a no-brainer that I'd work with the Sea Folk and the Whiteclouds.

I was actually prepared to continue this one and support the Seafolk who did have a plan with some merit to it. Producing any significant results from that plan, however, would be a long haul it was agreed and I was personally concerned I'd dash our joint hopes by acting the blockhead and either miss-ordering or pulling a NMR out of a hat. So as they say in free-fall parachuting, I pulled everything red and shiny...

A Final note. Although I didn't play Borderlands, and thus was not the harass-ee, I generally enjoy the quirks of some of these non-standard games, such as the sudden appearance of units or other similar "act of god." Given the geography of this board, it's probably one of the most effective ways to help ensure there is not an early stalemate.

No matter, thanks again to all and until next time!

Subject: Re: DC 216 Children of the Light EoG

Thanks again, Jason, for a second round of a variant where your interest shines though so clearly. You've made both my forays a lot of fun.

I think Alan's analysis is excellent, and a great jumping-off point. He is a good player who was totally stymied by Eduardo Kyono, the original Sea Folk leader. (I had similar issues with Eric Shum, playing Southlands.) The major drawback to this otherwise very enjoyable variant is that geography limits the diplomatic options of almost every player. Borderlands and Midlands have to fight. Westlands and Whitecloaks almost certainly have to fight. Southlands has two options - Whitecloaks or Midlands - and the Sea Folk have three. This sense of being locked in continues throughout the game; it's almost impossible to for most of the powers to solo. It may be telling that the two tests so far have resulted in two large draws.

I would recommend taking the same beautiful map and adding more provinces, with more ways around the all-too-limiting impassable spaces. (This applies to the sea as well: two Sea Folk fleets can seal off a Westlands armada from touching either the Sea Folk homeland or making the turn to attack the Whitecloaks or Southlands.)

On a personal note playing Borderlands, I wound up pretty frustrated by the too-frequent appearances of Men In Black. I mis-ordered once vs Midlands well before Bruce took over, and that may have made a difference - but that one instance aside, every time I had a head of steam going, I had to deal with an attack from behind. To be clear, I'm not saying that the game is unbalanced in this way - more that it's not a lot of fun to have such frequent random elements in a game designed to have none (no dice, simultaneous moves, etc.). Or not fun for me, anyway!

Hello again everybody,

I dont have a whole lot to say about this game so this should be a relatively short EoG. First of all let me say thank you to Jason who ran this game. He did a great job at GM and I know he's really put a lot of time into making this Wheel of Time diplomacy idea work.

As for the actual game, the whole time I felt like a caged mouse. My biggest success of the game was taking Ghealdan. I built an army in the fall and figured it was time to get down to business. Boy was I wrong. Expanding West was a poor option for me because of the Mountains of Mist. Likewise expanding north was equally as challenging. I set my sights to the East and hoped to take Illian from the Soutlanders with some Seafolk help. I still curse the seafolk name, as far as I'm concerned it was one of the worst diplomacy experiences I've ever had.

The seafolk just could nto be reached. I tried to negotiate me taking Illian in exchange for my help with him taking Tear. Tear Gordon and Mayene would have all been his I would have been happy with Far madding and Illian. The relationship with seafolk never really got off the board so I tried to set my sights on the Ocean. Maybe With some cunning strategy I could get some fleets out to see and cause some real problems for the Sea Folk. The West seemed on board so around spring 1002 I believe I planned to move on Illian with support from the Soutlanders. After taking Illian I would then allow my army to be popped for a Southland army. This would give me a build, in which I could raise a Fleet to take on the Sea Folk. It was a desperate time and a desperate measure, but the plan never sunk in with anyone else and ended up being a flop.

Shortly after the West and the Midlands took me out of the game quite handily. A painful game with a painful end.

Thank you all for playing, If I were to play this board again i would enjoy to see some changes. The impassable territories in the West make the game very difficult for The Whitecloaks and the West. If Ghaeldon touched more provinces it would have made my lfe a lot easier as well. Only one outlet into Emonds field made negotiating above me very difficult.

Thanks,
Alan Farrington

You're quitting because you missed a deadline and defaulted? You know that this site has a "not recommended" list that GMs can access and decide whether or not to allow you to join their games...?

It's not as though you're completely finished either - if Russia hadn't NMRed, I'd probably be on one or two centres right now and as good as out, but I'd have stuck it out to the end because that's what you agree to when you join a game. As WW's House Rules say:

"2. Delays will be kept at a minimum. Missing a deadline (even by a few minutes) will result in punitive action. The first missed deadline will earn a public warning and an NMR. The second missed deadline will result in immediate replacement."

it's automatically retreated OTB, per my house rules. Louis, now it's your
turn to contact me within 24 hours.
I heard from Jason and Ross, so we're good on that front.

DC 211: GAME OVER - The Day the Earth Stood Still - AceRimmer   (May 20, 2009, 6:30 pm)
I now have draw votes from all four surviving players. DC 211 Terrorform is declared a 2-way draw between Matt and Trout. Mike and Steve survive. Greg, Guile, and Mark, um, don't.

I invite all 7 players to write EOGs. If necessary, I will get out my gold-ink pen and fine stationery to hand-engrave invitations, because (especially as this is my first game GMing seismic) I really would like to know all of your experiences. Somewhere in there, I will also write a GM's EOG.

At the end of his concession, Mike declared with a lot of exclamation points "Until the next Seismic game!!!!" That should not be too far into the future. I will take a short time to revise the Seismic rules (hopefully incorporating brilliant, incisive comments from your EOGs), and then I will advertise for another game. I would like your advice on a map/scenario. Did you like it with Standard? Would you prefer more players (i.e. more chaos)? Is there a different map (say Modern, or Aberration, or Five Italies, or World War IV -- NOT)? Do you think it would work better in a game with early expansion or with nations starting cheek-to-jowl? You get the idea.

Thank you all for making this first experience with seismic so easy to GM. You're an excellent septet of players.

Russia.

Adam - I really enjoyed the game. I think you are an excellent GM.

I honestly believe that Austria and I could have beaten France - England has I not made that terrible stuff up a few seasons ago but not checking any of my moves or emails and submitting blindly. Either way the game was locked.

I'll write more AFTER i'm done with my reports.
