DC201 (Viking) - Winter 959 adjustments - CORRECTI... - bielf11   (Dec 21, 2008, 9:37 pm)
Please note that for some reason RealPolitik removed the army Sweden just built in Przemysl.
It allows me to build it there but when I choose Resolve and the Commit, the unit is gone.
While I try to resolve this, please keep in mind that the unit is actually there.

The Winter 959 adjustments:

SlavicNations: Build A Vitebsk
Sverige: Build A Przemysl

Then the vote for a DIAS: after having received all votes, it appears the proposal was VOTED DOWN.
So, sadly Wink, we have to continue a while longer.

Everyone was okay with the dates so deadline for Spring 960 orders is Monday Dec 29, at 23:00 GMT.
And a note to everyone: since we started I have had to remind several players that their orders were overdue. I like to get the adjudications out as per the deadline. I don't mind adjudicating a few hours later to avoid an impact on gameplay, but at the same time I'd like to ask everyone to watch those deadlines more carefully.

It's because PRZ is a Slavic Home SC and technically Sweden should not be allowed to build there.

Acrimony / dc206 - End Game Statement Russia! - deathblade_penguin   (Dec 21, 2008, 6:33 pm)
End of game Statement: Russia

First of all a big thankyou to John. Once of the first games he has GM'd on our site and I think he did
a fantastic job - consistent deadlines, good communication... good work John - I hope you run another.

Secondly, I have to think my allies Germany and Austria. Thanks Sam and Greg - 2 very good players who let me stab them at the right time.

This game was all about communication for me. In the beginning stages of the game, Austria (Greg) was a much better communicator with me that Turkey (Jyri). It made sense for me to work with Austria, attack and eliminate Turkey. Italy was initially onboard with this plan and sorry to Jyri but the writing was on the wall from the beginning.
In the north, I made peace with both Germany and England and was nicely sitting on the fence being very neutral.

Turkey eventually collasped and Greg/Austria stabbed Italy moving west and I thought about who i would work with in the north. In the end the decision was easy. Sam was an excellent communicator, and we traded many emails whilst Andy (NOTE to Andy - second game with you both times i've found poor communication) seemed to not wish to communicate. France had abandonded the game so I allied with germany, stabbed england in norway and the plan was for me to move on england whilst Sam mopped up in France. I kept trying to sow seeds of doubt between Austria and Germany but they were very focussed on their own problems and just would not move on each other. During this time, I kept promising to return RUMunia to my Austrian ally having snagged all of Turkey's SC but i deloberately kept my orders going so that I was holding onto Rumunia. Eventually Greg had to concentrate on Italy and could not afford the extra unit to come back and take it off me. This allowed me to stab Austria when i wanted too...

In the last stages, it was my own paranoia that eventually brought me the win. Sam and I had split the english and french SC very fairly but I just kept thinking that Sam was going to stab me, so I moved my fleet to Denmark to prevent him looping around behind me. Honestly at this point, I was willing to keep working with Sam but Sam took the move to denmark very personally and stopped all contact with me. It made it easier to then just attack him. Sorry Sam - you were an excellent ally. I then could see that with a few moves I could set up a 3 SC stab of Austria as long as I kept the Ionion sea. I immediately contacted Italy and Austria and negiotated moves with both them, so that I hoped they would not work together to steal the ION. They didn't. Sam had re-taken Munich (which was lossed) but allowed me to position my units so I could steal Berlin. This effectively had the game for me - and i just needed to submit the moves. Even though Austria NMR'd on the last turn, there were no moves he could have made to stop me taking those 3 SC. Germany - could have retaking Berlin if he ordered moves to SlL with support but that would have still left me with 18.

Thanks for the game, everyone.

OK everyone... I'm still away from my regular game computer, but in the interests of getting the game back on I've reverted to the old Paint map just for this winter. So find the Winter 2007 map attached. I'm back at my regular computer on January 4, so let's make the Spring 2008 deadline to be Tuesday, January 6, 2200GMT.

Mike and I have had brief discussions about the rights and wrongs of our strategy, so I'm not going to get into details. But there are some pretty strong players in this game, and half of them are just as close to home as me. Regardless of that, I'd say you just have a more innovative approach to the variant than most. I treat the variant as a fun twist on the regular game, but still assess the best tactic for success to be running for home rather than staying put. Anyone's approach to a variant is valid and ultimately tested by results.regards,Stephen

A couple of things here folks -
Orders were due Friday and I will get to them at some point
today. We had 1/2" or more
of ice on EVERY thing and my son was almost killed by
falling branches. Sorry, but that
took priority.

Michael - I am sorry you feel that way but how, exactly,
does your being a poor sport
and running for the hills help this game? You may see
this game as over, but I think it
is a far cry from that and I also believe you are wrong.
Unfortunately me being the GM
precludes me from commenting beyond that. There is a new
Enland on the board and
his first set of moves has yet to be seen by anyone but
me. Trust me, I have thrown
similar temper tantrums to yours (some worse) and this too
will pass. I would prefer
that you stayed in the game and played it to the end but I
am not going to beg you to.
I already think you are an ass as a GM, please do not give
me reason to think you
are as a player as well.

ALL: I will adjudicate later today if I can, there are
family events going on from
1-4 and 9-midnight so I will try and get it done between 4
and 11. I will run
this season with the orders Michael submitted already and
take it from there.

Michael - if you still want out just let me know and I will
replace you. Otherwise
I will assume you were just blowing off steam and keep you
on board.

Starting Out - xPhile   (Dec 21, 2008, 7:54 am)
Greets All

I have been pbem dipping for a couple years now (I don't count my one FtF game in the early '80s in my dipping experience) and have only played using the Kevin Lowe judges in games from the Diplomatic Pouch's queuing system (and a couple from the Diplamcy Direct grp.)

From what I gather, dc games are adjucated by an GM as opposed to a judge. So, my main question - how is communication handled? Just through email?

I could't find a FAQ about dc iteslf and how games are run, so if there is such a page I would appreciate direction to it.

I have been using jDip as my 'scenario generator' but always felt it lacking when it came to variant support (though kudos to its developers - I love the gui.) I will download RealPolitik and I am looking forward to trying a variant or two (suggestions or opinions on the most popular ones gratefully accepted.)

I have three games on the go and won't likely join any dc games until the two older finish up (the other is just out of the blocks.)

Cheers and happy holiday!
Tom

his first set of moves has yet to be seen by anyone but

Otherwise
I will assume you were just blowing off steam and keep you
on board.

to stop him.

Worst played game imaginable & they still don't acknowledge it. Dead wrong: Stephen can not lose unless he tries to by continuing to negotiate when it is needless to do so just to pretend a game is going on. Have played & run dozens of these - interdict 1st or don't enter the game. Running home means you want to play Standard - plenty of that simple stuff available elsewhere. Sorry about your son but this game is hopeless. Both E's moves were fine (blocked Ven as R should have & the like) so no issue there.

Of course, the other possibility is that he is just a better diplomat than you are
and they are listening to him rather than to you.

A couple of things here folks -
Orders were due Friday and I will get to them at some point
today. We had 1/2" or more
of ice on EVERY thing and my son was almost killed by
falling branches. Sorry, but that
took priority.

Michael - I am sorry you feel that way but how, exactly,
does your being a poor sport
and running for the hills help this game? You may see
this game as over, but I think it
is a far cry from that and I also believe you are wrong.
Unfortunately me being the GM
precludes me from commenting beyond that. There is a new

his first set of moves has yet to be seen by anyone but

Fellow DC 215 players and GM -

I apologize for any delayed replies to email lately, I am backlogged by about a hundred messages. As some of you may know, I'm currently transitioning from active duty US Army to the Reserves, and moving from my current station in Germany to our new home in Dallas, Texas. I may lose internet access intermittently during that time, depending upon availability of places I can log on. My service at home ends tomorrow, and I will be moving out within the week. I do not need to do so yet, but I may need to ask for a deadline extension until I get settled in Texas, which should be second week of January or so. Thanks for your patience -

Trout - this may also affect my ability to start the January DC tournament and the dwprep demo game on time, but I will do all I can to avoid that. You'll notice that means I'm playing in 3 DC games and 0 ACD ones at the moment - looks like you might make a convert out of me yet Smile

Of course - people might have qualms about my integrity - so I don't know how far that would go.. =P

Folks,
A fellow player of yours has suggested that my husband take the Russian position. I have asked my husband and he has conditionally accepted. He wants to make sure that everyone in the game is okay with it first. I do want to put it out there that my husband does NOT watch any game I am GMing. As a matter of fact my husband is usually not home when I input orders or do the adjudications. I need a yes vote from all of you before I add him to the game. If one person says no then he will not play and we continue to wait for another player. I need all your votes in by Monday Dec 22nd at 7pm EST. I would like to run one more turn before Christmas and before we take a little break.

Jon,
I don't want it to sound like I am being rude but playing on the site you are going to run into people you have played with before. Such is the case with my husband and Trout. Trout lives in Canada, we live in the United States. We have never met him. I have GM'd for Trout, played in a game with Trout and he is currently my GM in two other games. Trout can vouch for Andy only because Trout knows he is a reliable player who does not NMR, always submits prelims and always communicates.

I am missing the orders from one player and since I did not announce the
deadline was approaching I am going to extend the deadline. Since the
player in question never provided me with his weekend availability I have
to assume he does NOT have weekend access.

I will adjudicate Monday night at 2100 EST with what I have.
Actually, I have put all the orders into RP except the missing

Guys,

Having taken part in creating the default HRs I can assure everyone that it was never the intention to create a set of rules that conflicted with the Standard Diplomacy rules.

The quote I just pasted from the rules says essentially the same thing as our house rules do - only our HRs throw in the SC condition as well. Instead of a bullet-point list, the standard rulebook just wrote it into a paragraph.

The bullet-point list is only to eliminate options to reduce the auto-disband to a single choice. All four conditions should be viewed as a set and taken together.

The final word is up to Jackson, of course. But the rule-book says that he made the right call, the HRs say that he made the right call and as the player whose unit it is I agree with it as well.

1) I actually requested a Fleet in Trieste. I've re-sent that email to the GM, not sure how I ended up with an Army in TRI instead.

2) I'm not sure I quite understand the "take the rules as a whole" argument. Don't you use alphabetically only as the last resort? And don't you use fleet over army only as the next-to-last resort? It would make more sense to me to keep a unit in a supply center, so I'd think that comes first. In which case, BLA should be disbanded and not MUN. I don't really care too much how this ends up, but that is the outcome that makes the most sense to me.

Number of spaces is counted regardless of unit type. Whether the unit is a fleet or an army is irrelevent. For the purpose of calculating distance from a home SC, the unit is either X number of spaces or it is not.

You guys are adding sub-text where there isn't any.

Exactly. Because both are two spaces away from Russias home SCs. Then you take the one that is not on an SC itself.

Go one step further. Same example but add a fleet in the Norwegian Sea. In that case, it would be the fleet that gets disbanded and Munich and Syria would both stay on the board.

None of those take precedence over each other - they are meant to be taken as a whole.

i.e.

The unit disbanded is the one that is furthest from a home center.
If more than one is equidistant from a home SC, then the unit removed is one not on a supply center.
If more than one are not on a supply center then you take fleets before armies.
Then you resort to the alphabet if there choices still have not resolved into one.

In this case there was only one unit that was two spaces away from a home SC. That was Munich.

Good grief. How did I miss sending in that order. Sorry guys.

Packrat is right though - the default is usually the unit furthest from the home centers. (Not just any center.) But default removals are covered by the HRS - which are in this case the default DC house rules.

"On a Winter turn an NMR (NBR/NDR) would mean that if the player was building - the builds would be waived and if the player was disbanding, units would be disbanded under the following rules [list:caa09ac68a] [*:caa09ac68a]Units not in a supply center before units in a supply center [*:caa09ac68a]Units further from home centers before units closer to home centers [*:caa09ac68a]Fleets before armies if equidistant per the above [*:caa09ac68a]Alphabetical"[/list:u:caa09ac68a]

Both of my units that are not on a supply center are only one space from a home center. Munich is two. As such, Jackson made the correct disband.

Long story short, the lapse on my part was unforgiveable and the forced disband is my fault. I think Jackosn made the right call.

Folks, I have a dispute about these adjudications.

The default by Russia seems to be incorrect adjudicated, according to the DiplomaticCorp House Rules.

The rules specifically state that the first unit to be removed is a unit that is not in a supply center. Clearly, MUN is a supply center.

Then, the next criteria states that the unit which is further from a home supply center is to be removed. Both FIN and BLA are one space away from a home supply center (even though STP is not owned by Russia, it is still a Home supply center).

The third criteria is a fleet before an army will be removed. BLA is a fleet. FIN is an army. Therefore, BLA should have been removed.

Thanks,
-kevin

What good did "breaking france" do? It just lost you the game. Spain was the one with the clear shot at the win, so then that baffles me too that you'd want to see France go down so that Spain could win. Instead, a BF stab of Spain would have left Spain damaged but alive, and BF a bit stronger, but nowhere near the size that Spain was.

I'd say, Mike, that that is the main problem with the map. There are 4 Imperial powers who simply dominate many of the continents. Europe is crowded with powers, and Britain or Spain could essentially write off Europe and consolidate in their colonial holdings. I thought from the start that a Britain-Spain was likely to form, as they had relatively few contested centers and great opportunity to crush France and Holland between them.

If I were to throw in my two cents, it'd be to suggest knocking the colonial powers back a starting unit or three in their disparate holdings, and/or restricting their home centers somewhat. If it took fewer turns to consolidate control of the colonial regions, it would keep the smaller powers like China and Russia from becoming sideshows, as they'd be gaining power bases and be threatening the Imperials.

Aside from a slight starting power imbalance that somewhat relegates the Austrians, Ottomans, Chinese and Russians, I think this is a great map. Be happy to play it again, even as China. However, Mike, you should know I was lobbying HARD for Britain to ally with Spain and stab you. I just want to take some small modicum of credit for helping to break FranceSmile While on the grand scale that did probably help along a Spanish solo, from the perspective of one of the smaller powers it was kind of pick your poison. A French-British assault on Spain would have left China in about the same situation, even if I'd joined in. One would have gotten stabbed, and a different Imperial power would have gone on to solo.

It's a good variant. The problem with this game was that we had 3 large powers... one on around 30 sc (spain) and 2 on around 20 sc (britain and myself, france). When Britain stabbed France, that was just downright foolish, and handed the game to Spain. We two were the only two that could contest the remote Spanish holdings in Africa and S.America. Then Britain dropping off the face of the planet, and not even trying once to start up a discussion about reversing the stab and stopping Spain - led this game downhill. Jerry I dont think the variant is particularly broke, tho I have some ideas on some improvements. Overall it's very good, and the play in the game led to a solo that simply should not occur in this variant with so many sc needed for the win. I'm sorry Mick, but I thought your stab was awful, and that the ensuing lack of diplomacy and seemingness to care afterwards made for a long drawn out loss. Not to take anything away from Steve - Steve, convincing Mick to make that stab of course won you the game, so kudos to a good snowing there.

Another small drawback was the lack of early diploming from the first Holland, which saw one of the four imperial powers go down quick. This game does require a handful of active players, cuz there are so many centers at stake around the board.

My over ride of the single nay vote was not simply because Spain was
certain to win the last 4 centers he needed - it was because several
players also voted with their feet by not submitting orders with their
vote. Had I adjudicated the turn with the orders I had, Spain would
have gained more than 4 centers and been in position to gain yet more in
the fall turn. By virtue of orders received, Spain had no opposition.

This variant is going into the shop. Play of the game brought problems
to the surface, some technical items that were fixed on the spot, and
some that couldn't be dealt with with the game in progress. I've gotten
some good ideas for improving the variant from most of you, and hope to
hear more of your ideas while the games fresh in your minds.

If all goes well and there's nothing in the way, I hope to start another
game in February.
