DC 180: AFG draw proposal - txurce   (Dec 11, 2008, 11:26 am)
Matt and Mick,

I'm sure both of you can see that if the AFG alliance doesn't break up, you can neither win nor stalemate. Speaking for the alliance, I can say that we have every intention of sticking together until the inevitable. Please feel free to confirm this privately. By agreeing to an AFG draw now, we all save time playing out a foregone conclusion, and you both survive. If you would rather continue until elimination, then we will of course oblige. Should you choose to keep playing, don't assume that survival is a standing offer.

Jorge,

Please don't take this the wrong way but I would rather hear what France and Germany have to say about this. It will be they, not you, who control the outcome of the game.

I'll let Mick speak for himself. I've been playing this game since I was 12. I now have grand-children. I have found it appropriate at times to include a player with only one center left in a tie proposal because of exceptional play. And that is how I judge who I believe should be included in a tie--How they play. While I am relatively new to this game I have looked back at how the game progressed and Austria's inclusion in the tie is not warranted. I would be happy to vote for a German/French tie which is well deserved. If that is not acceptable then take me out.

Matt,

I would not have voted in favour if I didn't think Austria deserved to be in this. I think he's played a quite good game, and he's been instrumental in holding R/T back - and that does count for a lot in my book. As for your request, I don't think Austria would accept that. I would, of course Smile

I have to concur with Matt in his views. Austria has played well enough in this game, but I do not feel that he is in as strong a position as Germany or France. If I were to offer to turn on Matt (or him on me) in exchange for Germany & France turning on Austria, I think you may well be tempted! I would be happy to vote for a F/G win. Otherwise I think we will have to slog it out.

Austria's role in this game has pretty much been dictate by Alex and Mikael. Other than writing a number of mutual support orders, assisted greatly by German armies, and now French fleets, that has been about it. Frankly one set of orders for the past few turns and my guess at Alex's request. He did well doing what he was told but I would not define that as great play.

I know my playing this game they way I did has not cover me with glory but I was not interested in playing the role that Austria ultimately did--do Alex's bidding. Frankly I am amazed that Mick has stuck with me because getting Russia off a German leash cost him more than anyone else. Thanks Mick for that. So, I will stick it out to the end with Mick. Germany and France can easily deal with Austria and still hold their own against us and gain a (2) way tie which I do believe they deserve.

Sounds like you haven't learned a lot since you were twelve, Matt! While I was hoping to enjoy being part of a draw with my far more accomplished allies while having fewer centers than the two survivors, it sounds like I'll have to settle for having fewer than one.

Mikael, I appreciate your support, and Alex, thanks in advance for the reply I assume would be coming. After reading the last two epitaphs, please don't bother. I now realize that the two eliminatees-to-be are galled by how much I don't deserve what you and Mikael are so generously giving me. Let's leave it that way. It's a lot more fun.

Seismic frustration! The German provinces say, "Ni!" "Ni! Ni! Ni! Ni!" Terrorforming Der Vaterland ist verboten!

But the K-niggits of the Balkans and the Mediterranean are less intimidating, and the best they can manage is "Nu! Nu! Nu! Nu!" Austria, Italy, and Turkey get their moves.

As a reminder, please remember to look for isthmuses in your moves. This is not (by far) the first time somebody has created an isthmus and not submitted a preference for potential waterways.

There has been a draw proposal made and since we were 'technically' waiting for summer retreats to be confirmed, I'm going to allow it to be proposed.

The draw proposal is F-G-T.

If successful this would take the place at the start of Fall 1905, with the SC count as of the previous winter.

Please vote YES or NO by the Fall deadline.
I will accept 'public' published votes as long as they are sent to my email.
Failure to vote will be seen as a NO.
All players should submit moves as well as votes, in case the vote fails.
All players should vote, I will not 'assume' or 'guess' your vote.

The fall deadline is still next Tuesday 16th.

ONE PLAYER'S OPINION

I am hoping this is not the case, but should Italy not turn
in a disband
order this winter, what happens?

1. It is my understanding that his Eastern Mediterranean
Fleet would be
the default disband. Is that correct?

2. Would a NBR put him in Civil Disorder, thus leaving his
unit in place
for the next year? Would we pause to fill the (extremely)
lost position?
Would he be allowed to submit orders in the Spring even if
he doesn't
submit his disband order?

I am concerned about this for it does affect the game
somewhat. Should no
orders be given for the Italians, Austria will occupy
Naples in the Spring
and be able to support the defense in the fall. Should an
active and
concerned Italian player still submit orders, Italy will
still very likely
be lost by years end, but he could confound things for
Austria (most
likely), and possibly France, Turkey, and Russia. (not
counting
indirectly Germany and England.)

Please don't try to read any personal opinion as to
what outcome I would
prefer. I am only trying to ascertain what dynamics I need
to consider.
Having been a GM myself, I know the frustrations of losing
players and the
remaining players needing to adjust to the new dynamic. I
am just trying
to understand the possible outcomes of a possible NBR.

Jimmy, I know we haven't seen eye to eye on much in
this game, but for
the sake of the sport, I encourage you to openly let us
know if you are
still with the game.

The draw proposal is F-G-T.

"Pretend inferiority and encourage his arrogance.”

The Good: Chin Armies advance in all directions.
The Bad: Ch'i doesn't gain anything, may lose one.
The Ugly: Yen liberate their home center from the Barbarians, but will it last?

One retreat, and it's a neutral, so I need orders from everyone. Both neutrals were ordered to move this turn, but it came to nothing, as Chin took Handan anyway. A Handan can retreat to Lintse or OTB. Send in your vote ASAP, due by tomorrow night, December 12 at 23:59 GMT.

Thanks!

Dc194 Spring 1908 (dc194) offdisc Dec 11, 01:11 pm
Thanks to Steve for finishing up the GMing of this game! I was the
last replacement to join in the fray and had no clue that you were a
replacement GM.

Thanks to all the other players for keeping to the schedule.

It had been a while since I jumped into a replacement position with
anything more than a mercy position. Kind of fun to be able to not
only survive, but make a play towards a win. If it wasn't for (1) the
upcoming holidays, (2) a tight RL work schedule, and (3) Anthony's
newness to this site, I probably would have continued on to try for
the Solo. But time is short, and Anthony was a great partner, so I
saw no reason to make his first foray into our group a bad experience.
[ Note to Anthony: Every game plays differently. Next time..... Smile ]

When I came into the game, I talked to several players, but focused on
my neighbors: England, Germany, and Austria. England (Joe) and I have
played together before, and he immediately told me that if I chose to
work with him, he'd play, but otherwise he had basically checked out
of the game. I was willing to form an EF until I talked to Germany
and Austria and figured that they would be better early partners.
Sorry Joe, but you saw it coming, so I know there won't be any
lingering grudges.
Austria and I worked out a plan to hold back Turkey, and after I
grabbed England, I had enough units to march into Germany.
At the time I made my first moves in that direction, Turkey and I came
up with a 'Replacements Rule!' plan to take over the map. I kept
directing Austria in ways to 'survive' --- all the while, filtering
the same plans to Turkey so he could attack accordingly. I was able
to convince Austria to let me move into sensitive areas to block the
Turkish advance, and found myself in a position to grab a bunch of
Austrian centers without resistance. That was too much of bonus not
to take.... and thus the FT alliance was in full effect.
Anthony and I continued working together, and I proposed the plan to
knock out Russia as well. He saw the writing on the wall: if Russia
pulled his forces out of Germany, I had a Solo in hand. Yes, that was
my goal! But Turkey reacted strongly against attacking Russia and
when he proposed to Russia to accept a 'survivorship' if we declared
an FT Draw, I felt obligated to go along with it.

Good game all! I had a blast!

Dc214 Draw Proposal - deathblade_penguin   (Dec 11, 2008, 3:22 am)

DC224 Slaughter At StoryTime - Spring 01 - Very Ba... - former.trout   (Dec 10, 2008, 11:19 pm)
The stage was set, the curtain drawn and Haven all a-hush
Heroes loomed with weapons drawn and war-plans inked with brush
Inately soon arrived the Spring and forward went the crush.

Some Centaurs were the first of them, to Cathal and Sunless Sea
In view the ominous fleets of Knightly hue in Crystal Lake did be
Snarling Barbarians to Eridu did rampage hastily...

To scholarly quests the Gnomes turned to in Groves of Academe
Hearing Archer cries of sharp surprise in Country of Critter Theme
Elsewhere in Land of Sweets did Faerie feet polish golden boots a-gleam

Sharp Roguish blades did twirl around deep in Daisy Meadows
Elvish fleets in Morva Marsh did practice with bows and arrows
Capering 'long the Razor's Edge the Wizards sought the narrows

Resting not the Undead swept into the Savage Sea
Evading lucky Leprechauns in Merrow handily
Telling tales of Ogre might in Ogrun - far to lea.

Meanwhile 'twas the High Seas stakes the Magicians rolled the dice
Eking out o'er Pirate foes who did not pay the price
Sought out by Trolls of Kahvi shores for support thats oh so nice.

Soft-footed routes did Hobbits take to Brandywine Beer-Hall
Anhondo Plain the Samurai sought for parties till last call
Gulped down the ale did Dwarven Beards in Hollow Earth's dark pall

Ending the round in Splendour Town the Nomads complete the score.
. That's it, its over now. Till Fall, there is no more.

-------------------

Exciting times in Haven. Unfortunately Heath will not be joining us for the game as the grace period expires without Nomad orders. So I took our armed neutral option and ordered the Nomads as per our neutral players request.

No retreats being required, we'll set the Fall 01 deadline for Wednesday December 17th (11:59 PM GMT). Please just let me know if you spot any errors in the turn adjudication.

Cheers everyone!

Thrakkorzog: Quite frankly, that's why I was so glad to find this great apartment. You'd be surprised how hard it is to get a place in the city. Never mind that most folks are hesitant to rent to a slime-based organism, much less one with intentions of taking over the world...
Thrakkorzog's Sentient Tongue: And eating brains. Don't forget the brains.

Some interesting things happening in the North Seas this turn as Russia retreats to the North Atlantic and then disbands in Edinburgh. The neighbourhood is far from crowded as Germany disbands in Liverpool and England in the Norwegian Sea. Meanwhile France builds in Brest, Austria in Budapest and Turkey enlists new forces in Constantinople and Ankara.

Thanks to everyone for the quick work getting all the orders in. We'll take a short stretch now while one of our players is on the road. Spring 1909 orders will be due Friday, December 19th (11:59 PM GMT).

Many thanks to our noble England, who fought hard to the end.
Germans advance to Livonia and St. Petersburg as the Franco-Austrians take the Aegean, forcing the Turkish Fleet to Constantinople.
One retreat possibility. Mick, if you want to retreat OTB and get a build instead, let me know within 24 hours.
One build for Germany, so as soon as Alex can get that to me, we can move on. Let's set the Winter deadline for Tomorrow, Dec. 11 at 23:59 GMT
Also, there was a proposed AFG draw with the fall orders. I'll remind you again with the German (and possibly Turkish) build, but if you want to vote for the AFG draw, with RT Survivors, before the Spring orders come out, that will be an option. I will only publish the vote instead of the German (and Turkish?) builds if everyone votes yes before I get the build orders. Votes for the draw aren't due until the Spring orders.
Thanks!

Well, well... the carving up of North America is nearly complete and the move into China has started in earnest. What follows is the story of the fall of 2007 in which a few made their bid for board leader, a few others tried to solidify their ranks and others fought for simple survival.
