PS f06 results! Dont forget... - FuzzyLogic   (Jun 02, 2008, 2:45 pm)
Note one error in the adjudication:
F athenae Supports F saronieus sinus (*Void*)
Should be:
F athenae - F saronieus sinus (*Fails*)
No change to the map, but noting for correctness.

DC-134 Southlands EOG - Garry.Bledsoe at allte...   (Jun 01, 2008, 9:51 pm)
Okay...sorry to be last here. Been out of town and getting through both personal and work emails is proving challenging [oh yeah...and trying to reconnect in my current games].

I really enjoyed filling in in this game. I reluctantly took it because I had so many games going on but decided to try to help the cause. Plus, I honestly thought that the Whitecloaks were doomed and that it wouldn't take any time for me to bungle it further. The NMRs were unfortunate and I am sure that getting replacements was tough. I fortunately, as it ends up, wasn't in too bad of a place to pull a rabbit out. All in all I was quite happy to get/take the draw although I do think that I was definitely in a position to get part of a final 3-way. Unfortunately, like the rest, I felt that a Borderland replacement would have too dramatically altered the game.

Quick notes on the game itself:
Jorge - enjoyed working with him. He was first to offer an alliance and I saw no other alternative than to take it. We were able to work well together...unfortunately we just couldn't make progress. I think that the nature of the SeaFolk make them always an enabler unfortunately.

Stephen - always enjoy working with him. Not surprisingly, I quickly realized that not working with him would be foolish. At the minimum, he and I always had to have a bit of an agreement due to our proximity. However, in the end, I think that that strengthened things a bit.

Trout - {sigh}. You should have taken my offer a few turns back. Things might have turned out differently.

Sean - didn't get a chance really to do much with you given our schedules but our common work in the middle worked nicely.

Jules - sorry that someone had to be the odd man out and that that was you. I just couldn't see any scenario where we could work together and me gain on any front. Unfortunately that meant that I had to ally against you to get anywhere.

Notes on the map/variant:
1. Really liked the random Trollocs and Seanchan. Add a unique element.
2. Maybe should consider aberration builds for the game? I, for one, was constantly hamstrung by having nowhere to build [but did not seem to be true for BL/WL].
3. Agree with Trout's comments about the sea spaces. The SeaFolk can effectively lock down the coasts, especially with the rule about the Oceans being unpassable to all but them. Even if I had taken back Ebou Dar from Jorge I would never have been able to make any progress anywhere. As such, it was unlikely that I could ever see a way to stab.
4. Agree about some of the other spaces being constricted a bit. It honestly felt like I never had any way to stab Stephen had I wanted to because I could never bring forces to bear against him [because of the mountains]. That same thing made taking areas in the Midlands tough. The nature of the unpassables made several bottlenecks that truly would have made any solo really tough. Additionally, it seemed that they existed in some places and at some borders, but not at others [i.e. the Eastland/Midland/Southland/Whitecloak borders].
5. Might have been interesting to allow adjacent corners to be touching. There were several places where four areas came to a point but the two opposite corners could not "touch" one another. I understand the logic and nature of that but it still could have been interesting if several of them [say 3 of the 4] bordered one another.
6. I really think, without modifications, it could be very hard for anyone to solo on this board and it certainly will be hard to get down to less than three [and maybe four]. Nonetheless, it does have some interesting characteristics that would make it a fun game to play in again and certainly, with the right players, make a whale of a diplomacy battle.

The ending - who knows what could have happened? I cannot say for sure if I could have/would have swung to a Jorge/Trout alliance or not. I think that the comment that the game would swing on me in the future was correct, simply based on the position I had. Honestly the one thing I kept telling Trout and Jorge though was that I needed some real good reason to turn because I would be facing the brunt of the attack. Who knows if they would have been able to convince me or not? If so, the game could have lasted forever!

All the best to all who played and many thanks to Jason!

Hi Folks,

Well - here we are... A successful four-way draw with one survival. Not quite what I had in mind when I started my Captaincy of the Southlands, but a result I'm quite content with nontheless. Congratulations to my fellow draw-sharers, a tip o' the hat to Sean for his work in the Borderlands and my thanks to Julz and Tim for their efforts. (Julz - you deserved a better neighbour, that's for sure.)

Above all, a huge shout-out goes to Jason who designed and GM'd this exciting new game variant. It was a lot of fun to play, brother. I totally enjoyed it.

Although, I have to admit to being greatly frustrated - but this was mostly at myself. I am the first to volunteer that I did not pay the diplomacy in this game nearly the attention that it deserved. The biggest result of this was my long stalemate with Jorge and the Seafolk - a situation that finally began to resolve itself at the end of the game. (Surprisingly enough, it changed up when I wrote a few emails to him... Weird, eh?)

During the mid-game, I was once again stung by my failure to pay attention to the play. I think I had several opportunities to start working with Garry - all of which I squandered by timidity or lack of focus. I spent pretty much the entire mid-game propping up Julz against the West/Border/Whitecloaks alliance while trying to defend my own south from Jorge.

Things started to roll in the last turn - I managed to start talking to Jorge again and with some concessions made, he opened the front against the Westlands. If things had continued, and we had talked Garry into joining our northward-heading group, things could have gotten fairly interesting.

However, I agree with Steve when he points out that another replacement at this point would have blown. After the lack of attention I paid this one, I'm more than happy to be part of the draw - and I'd look forward to the next playtest where I can focus more on the game. =)

Map notes:

- I might open the sea zones up a little more by adding a few more over-lapping shallow water zones. With just two fleets, the Sea-folk can pin down three or four units for any nation with a coast.

- Windbiters Finger - make this a passable space?

- Another pass through the Mountains of Mist - sounds good... How about another through the Spine Of the World?

- Make the passes through the Spine of the world navigable by players and open up part of the Aiel Waste for traffic.. This would help eliminate part of the stalemate-ness of the board and take away the 'Southern Fortress' aspect.

Those are my thoughts. Thanks for the game everyone! And once again, nice work Jason...

Trout

DC176 - News from Turkey - bielschowsky.f at goog...   (Jun 01, 2008, 2:20 pm)
Apologies. Did not have any time earlier to inform you.

From: Eirik S. <rodegned(at)hotmail.com (rodegned(at)hotmail.com)>
Date: 2008/5/31
Subject: RE: DC176 - Winter 1903 - Adjudication
To: bielschowsky.f(at)gmail.com (bielschowsky.f(at)gmail.com)

Ah, the adjudication came as I had assumed... Due to both a lack of time and unforeseen technical circumstances I was sadly unable to deliver my builds for the Winter 03. This, one "informal" email account of mine, was not functioning at all yesterday, in that I could not proceed to login. Also, when I did log in only moments ago, I noticed I had not received much email save for spam as well as this adjudication. I had heard earlier that Hotmail was experiencing server difficulties, so there was a combination of this and my severe lack of time in the past few days which made me unable to deliver.

It has been like this at other occasions too, once resulting in a lack of communication between allies before a crucial deadline. But things to not look bleak for the Turks merely because of technicalities, but in great part of my own ignorance.

I look forward to building up the Empire again.

Guns, Germs and Steel 1264 / DC110 - Spring 1873 -... - former.trout   (May 31, 2008, 10:47 am)
- USA NAVY TAKES UNEXPECTED VACATION IN HONOLULU
- JAPANESE LEARN RUSSIAN FOR HELLO IN VLADIVOSTOK
- THE TSAR RETURNS TO TOUR THE BALKANS - COURTESY OF THE FRENCH
- CHINA MANAGES TO JUGGLE FLAMING AXES WHILE WATER-SKIING - AND FOILING ALL DUTCH ADVANCES

Well, Holland does its way into Bengal - but all across the rest of the Eastern front things stay the same. The arrival of the new Japanese Emperor seems to salt things up a bit and Europe continues to be a muddle.

My thanks to everyone for waiting for this long-anticipated deadline. We have several retreats due up - deadline for Summer 1873 orders will be set for Monday, June 2nd (11:59 PM GMT).

Both end-game proposals meet with defeat - we battle on. As always, please let me know if you spot any errors.

Cheers!

dc 167 Germany Eog Statemant - psychosis1973   (May 31, 2008, 2:48 am)
My view on the game...

Firstly, I really don't like playing Germany - in the past I've got to 6-8 centres then hit a wall...

Anyway, similar to Mikael, I reviewed the records in the first round of all the players and noted soloes for England, Italy and Austria. However, I also knew that the French player had just NMRer in a couple of games I was already playing, so I figured I'd have to at least work with England initially to divide up France - and Mikael proved to be a communicative and sharp ally in this. Ideally, I'd have worked with Russia and Turkey, but given England was guaranteed to get a fair few builds due to France NMRing, I figured I had to go with England on this and hope to get some opportunity for stab (which I figured would be diffcult and so it proved).

England and I worked out an arrangement for me to be land based, him to build fleets, and a division of france and the surrounding neutrals. I was nervous about this a little, as it involved England vacating certain SCs for me to take, but he proved good to his word.

Communication from other players was limited in the early part of the game - Italy and Russia made warm noises, but came across as non-commital, so nothing much happened with them.

Russia was on my back from the start about Sweden - I chose to bounce him out, which annoyed him no end, and, thankfully, he didn't get any builds in the first year, which put me in a good position. A couple of good guesses about his fleet moves in the Baltic/GoB kept him out of Sweden, and I was able to mobilise armies to push on to Warsaw and Moscow and eliminate him with Turkey and England's help in north and south.

Austria's moves in the early part of the game seemed very odd to me - almost suicidal. The thought did cross my mind that he was deliberately throwing this game to give him a chance of a win in Round 1, but anyway, he was quickly gone...

The game quickly descended into a EG v IT stalemate which, if no one was going to budge, was going to result in a four way draw. Turkey and I discussed things a little, but I was unwilling to stab England (as it would have proved very difficult) and Turkey didn't seem interested in a stab on Italy. I figured at this stage that a four way draw with me and England on an equal number of SCs would be the best outcome for us both, leaving the tournament result down to a tiebreaker (a tiebreaker which I couldn't quite work out!)

England was also diploming with Turkey, and I got an email from Mikael implying a Belguim stab which was Turkey's price for a Italy stab...i picked up the subtext and bounced in Belguim, with Turkey carrying through the Italy stab. I became paranoid over the next few turns, as Mikael had plenty of chance to stab me, but didn't.

In the meantime, Italy got squeezed - his ultimate downfall was partly my fault for not supporting him in the way I had suggested, plus him not making the guaranteed play for NAP on the same move.

Just after this, England stabbed me, just as I'd convinced myself that he wouldn't due to him keeping his word over the previous few seasons. This gave him a couple of centre lead over me, and a much stronger position in the tournament - Mikael noted that he only carried out this stab due to the tournament nature of the game, and I believe him. I tried to play England in the next couple of turns (somewhat unconvincingly), by pretending to acede to being a junior partner in a continuing alliance, but I worked with Turkey for a couple of turns, taking venice myself and taking back Moscow. I genuinely think we could have beaten back Germany if Turkey had kept to our arrangement, but he grabbed Venice for himself, and that was the end of that.

Following this, I veered back to the English side, a three way draw proposal came up, and I voted for it - England and I could force a stalemate, and I'm pretty pleased with a three way draw at that stage, as Turkey could have grabbed Warsaw and Moscow, giving him two more centres, and me two less.

And in answer to Mikael - no I wouldn't have settled for a two way draw...I held the balance of power in the game at the end - neither you nor Turkey could have soloed without my cooperation, so I'd have blocked any two way draw votes, with the (implicit) threat of a solo for the other player. My Gas army could have proved a distraction for England, and, although English gains could have been made in my northern holdings, Turkey had most to gain in the east.

Lessons learned from the game? Tournament conditions change the dynamics of the game, and I still don't like playing Germany!

As a final point, many thanks to Christine for GMing the game and the players for making it a challenging and entertaining game, particularly Mikael, who was a pleasure to work with!

DC172 - Replacement England And Ottomans - former.trout   (May 27, 2008, 12:50 am)
Heya Folks of 1600,

As I've previously announce, unfortunately we've had to replace our England and Ottoman players. Ideally replacements are never the best situation, but in this case I felt the positions still had sufficient game impact to warrent new players into the fold. As such, please welcome Jerry Todd as England and Rob Bristol as the Ottoman Tiger. Their emails are included in the player roster below.

Happily, both players have provided prelim orders - which means I now have orders from everyone for the Spring 1603 turn. However, I wouldn't mind giving you guys a chance to meet and greet our new arrivals, and for them to get a feeling for the knives that lay about the land. Revised deadline for Spring 1603 will be set for Thursday, May 29th (11:59 PM GMT).

Thanks for the continued patience everyone. Thursday will be here before you know it. =P

Cheers,

Jerry, I think a change there makes sense. It certainly allows the Spanish an additional option.

I don't remember, but does Spain also have a fleet starting in CRN? If so, France will still have to deal with a potentially very crowded BOB in order to get their fleet out.

Germany partitioned - is this a surprise? Often first to go or last man
standing there is no middle ground for her. Their leader stood bravely
before her populace and admitted defeat.

"We fought bravely against steep odds..." was how the speech began but
quickly segued into stronger words, "... Germany, reunited. Germany,
stronger than before. Germany, armed to the teeth, not cut off at the
knees..."

The leader of the Red Army was non-plussed, but words like this may yet
prove a thorn in the side of the partitioners as they could inspire a
resistance movement.

Hi,

Aegean looks like a great variant and is definitely one I've never played. I've played a handful of Diplomacy games at DC, but quite a number at the sister site of Redscape. You can often find my opinions posted on Redscape's political forum, however I am sick of the Reverend Wright topic.

Look forward to hearing from you.

Cheers,

Player list re003 Welcome Dip Friends,
To this game of Aegean Diplomacy!

This is the first time this game has been played in dc, and really the first time I've heard of it being played anywhere - so it should be a pretty experimental game - hopefully a lot of the basic strategies of standard 7-player dip will be equally applicable here, so you're not totally in the dark about what to do.

Being the first time played, I'll run it completely random for the countries. So take a moment to reply to me (or the group) to let me know you're still interested, committed to play to the end, and if you like, a bit about you, especially the new players that I dont know here.

See you soon with country assignments once I hear from all 7!

DC138 Winter Of Our Discontent - Early Winter 2008... - former.trout   (May 08, 2008, 11:41 pm)
This weeks fortune comes courtesy of the Hitchhiker's Guide To The Galaxy ... What the strag will think is that any man who can hitch the length and breadth of the galaxy, rough it, slum it, struggle against terrible odds, win through, and still knows where his towel is is clearly a man to be reckoned with....

New York quietly scuttles the Atlantic fleet. Deadline for Winter 2008 adjustments will be set for Saturday, May 10th (11:59 PM GMT).

Cheers!

Trout

DC170 spring 1907 addendum - coryfucius   (May 05, 2008, 9:52 am)
I did it again... there is an endgame proposal open for voting in spring 1907. It's a 3-way draw among England, Germany, and Turkey. Please be sure to cast your vote. Sorry for the short notice, I'll try to keep these in mind when I send out future adjudications.

Cory
