Once Within: Lighthouses & Watch towers - FuzzyLogic   (Mar 21, 2008, 10:07 am)
A reminder… Lighthouses and Watch Towers light up 2 spaces on your maps, but they don’t provide intelligence about what other players ordered. I may have mis-clarified that last round in the bit about orders… but your own orders and units (and a few special abilities) are the only things that learn of other players’ orders.

*************************************************

Some of you have asked what the um… “Oil Refinery looking” thing is on your map… (are my graphics that bad?)

These are either a lighthouse or a watchtower! (hopefully you can tell which it is – tho they are functionally equivalent, I just put watchtowers if inland, or lighthouses if coastal). It watches over the two spaces next to it, and keeps them lit up on every map you receive. This makes it harder to sneak up on these key cities. If it’s unclear, feel free to ask. This is a new feature for FOW IV, after having seen some brutal surprise stabs in games past.

If your lighthouse or watchtower is captured, it does NOT operate for enemy occupiers but will stop working for you. If you can liberate the city, it would resume operation.

Enjoy,
-mike

DC141 - Winter 04 Orders - GM Gaffes A-Plenty - former.trout   (Mar 20, 2008, 8:14 pm)
Heya folks,

Truly sorry about this. Turns out I already had the missing adjustments but had mis-filed them in a different game-folder. My bad - the slight delay is on my shoulders...

Winter adjudication is below. England builds a pair of armies, Turkey a pair of fleets. Russia pots a pair of boots in Moscow and Germany removes in Helgoland. And with Italy non-responsive, I took the liberty and removed his non-SC unit in the Tyrrhenian Sea.

Have not heard from the possible replacement players as of yet, but I will let everyone know ASAP what the situation there is. (They are blind-CC'd on this adjudication.)

Spring 1905 orders will be set for Wednesday, March 26th (11:59 PM GMT). Please send your orders to Alex, but copy me in on them in case he is still busy and cannot adjudicate.

Cheers!

Better belay that notice folks. Apologies, but we seem to be short one set of orders for Spring 1905 - the player in question has been notified. I would normally follow Alex's HR's and NMR the position this turn, but due to the dual-GM nature of the last couple turns its possible that the orders were sent but simply not CC'd to me.

Whatever the case, if the last year has taught me anything it is that it never hurts to delay just a few hours to seek clarification. (Lesson learnt the hard-way.) I have given the missing player notice that orders are due by 11:59 AM GMT, or approximately 8 hours from now.

Cheers everyone. We'll get this game firing on all seven cylinders yet. =P

Dc132 Spring 1908 was due Thursday 20th at 9pm, Australian EST.

I have NO moves from Turkey. My records indicate that Turkey has not yet used his grace period, so the 24 hour grace period is now starting for Spring 1908.

This means the only England has a grace period remaining.

I will adjudicate as soon as I have Turkish moves, or 24 hours has passed (Friday 21st March at 9pm, Australian EST)

Any player is welcome to change their moves during this time.

DC138 Winter Of Our Discontent - Spring 2006 - Har... - FuzzyLogic   (Mar 19, 2008, 5:44 pm)
Ah yes - glad to have the expert here to declare what alliances can or cannot work. Shall I take notes? EGF or AIT can and do work in the standard game. In fact they are well-documented. But you say they can't so maybe 30 years of history and thousands of games were wrong. EGF (or in our case NHQ) alliances work if you make them work. If you discount any alliance as impossible, then you're simply playing with a smaller deck of options than the rest of the players. I will keep that in mind for future games! Perhaps you should consider that they dont work for you, cuz you think they dont work and so you preemptively break them. You also think that BC/Cali shouldn't work and one should stab the other, to the extent that you're whining that they should, yet it continues to work to your dismay.

They're simply choosing not to stab. Sorry. That probly hurts your eyes to read.

Now tell me who is handing the game over?

Oh, I don't think you alone caused the predicament that the whole northeast is in. However you were certainly an instigator in the happenings. I know that Heartland moved on me first, and I tried to work w the trio again after that, and then the two of you moved in, and I tried to work w HL yet again, and he still took a center on a retreat. But I chalk that up to inexperience, whereas I know you're a veteran who's supposedly been thru this before. I am pretty certain that without your prodding, if instead you and I had stood solid, HL would not have moved against us alone. As you put it, he probly could have been "manipulated" into sticking w us indefinitely, but you played that card to our destruction instead of our growth.

I'm guessing in dc136 you probly got hit from the other side, and so didnt have the chance to stab. No doubt if say Florida or Cuba had come up at you from the south, you'd have been all for our alliance. But when given the choice, well... it is a game of choices so we need not beat that one. Unfortunately there is no disputing that I gave both yourself and Heartland a huge effort to make this work, whereas your diploming was from the start of the alliance to get HL to stab me, since I outright told you I wouldn't stab him. That was truly my mistake in this game, when you asked me to stab Heartland so early, I should have realized you were playing that both ways, and Heartland wasn't as resistant to giving in.

What was the word... yes... perspective.
Or in your case, perspecttive.

Sims,

All in the perspective of the wronged. I have played this game long enough to know that a geographic situation like ours would not sustain a long term, successful 3 way alliance. In the same way a E/G/F alliance or a T/I/A alliance in Vanilla Dip cannot last. A wise friend of my tought me this valuable piece of advise (occasionally the hard way) in some FTF games. An ally is no longer an ally if they have a shot at 2 or more SC's. And in 8 years of actively playing this game I have found that theory to be true 95% of the time. Sooner or later our borders would have ended up establishing that exact status.

If you want to see whether I am capable of being a solid and secure ally, look at DC136 where I have worked with Germany from the start to both of our benefit. Germany unfortunately made a wrong guess one turn that hurt him significantly and is just climbing back up from that with the trusted help of yours truly. So yes it can be done. But more often than not, it falls apart.

Lastly before you go blaming me for my choice of adjustments, I suggest you look more at HL and him vacating his line and cooperating with BC dispite my continued support and petitioning to ensure he did not lose MIS to Cali 3 years ago. So don't point the finger on me for the advance of Cali and BC. The line that fell apart which will open the door for them was and is HL. Period. so cus him out too while you are putting the blame on me handing the game over to them. I did my level best to restore peace and support HL and he chose to side with BC. Now tell me who is handing the game over?

Perspective.

Rob

Please refrain from declaring my moods. I am not mad, or upset. Rather I've been enjoying the game since you (Rob) devoted an empire 4 times my size to eliminating me, and you have nothing to show for it... and in fact lost 2 centers last round. You're so worried about BC rounding that corner or me living to say "hah" that you are conceding the center of America to California and BC so as to ensure my demise. That is in a way the ultimate compliment that you are giving up your own game to take mine.

However in the same breath, you're bitching about how Cali and BC wont stab each other, when you're bailing on the center of the map in favor of retaining an army in Gas is just handing them more centers and growth w/o having to stab the other. You are feeding the monster that you're complaining about, while getting very unlucky in the battles agaisnt me.

"You're just mad and upset that you were jumped on first - before you got yourself established enough to turn on HL or I."

I think Andrew's comments are right on, and this edifies them. For had you (and Heartland) not stabbed our trio, we would be in the 3 power positions, and everyone else on the map would be encouraging us to stab the other. See this is where your logic falls apart, for you ASSUME that an alliance wont work, and that someone will stab it. However we can see that if players stick to it, then it works. You didnt give ours a chance. You basically stabbed, admittedly so that I couldnt stab you first, and anyone who approaches an alliance like that, will find themselves often alliance-less, facing those who are stronger, urging them disappointedly to stab the other.

"Your in a position to lose both your SC's this turn "

Are you proud of this? You've spent your whole game trying to elim one player, I've survived way longer than I should have, and you're coming up on the short end of the alliance stick after our trio had the best opening possible in this game. Andrew would be toast if you hadn't turned, and Heartland and myself would now be beating on the door of California (sorry Ray!). However, yes, I am in a position to lose my SC's, so kudos to you for a great start well squandered. Smile

Aw Sims... in this game there was no disconnect between my words and my orders to anyone until HL decided to fudge a foolproof (or so I thought) plan to take MON and QUE from you. And not since I sought retribtution for his actions has there been disconnect. Twice HL screwed me since (justifably) and for several turns BC has spoken great things towards peace in the NE, yet his rush of units to the region paint an entirely contrasting picture.

You're just mad and upset that you were jumped on first - before you got yourself established enough to turn on HL or I. I'm just mad because I had too much confidence in the compotence of HL. I put too much trust in BC when clearly he didn't deserve any, and at present you are just an extension of him.

The fact of the matter is HL will lose his centers before he gains anything significant from me. Your in a position to lose both your SC's this turn and surprisingly even after my misorder, I am not in terrible position in the short term.

In the long term, unless BC and Cali crack or Mexico makes immediate moves to flex some naval muscle in the Pacific, then the game is over. Not one to throw in the towel, but another season or two on the current course and our little love triangle in the NE will be a distant thought.

Rob

Andrew,

firstly I think you are thinking of the wrong foolproof plan as our communication when HL fudged it wasminimal long before my "easily manipulated" statement. And the funny thing about your declaration of my statements further solidifies my statement regarding HL. If there is anyone on this board than can say without a doubt that HL has NOT been sporadic and flip flopping all game and show proof then I will resign... right I guess I play on...

And if you accurately read what I wrote - not interpret what you want and how it suits you best - you will clearly see, and I quote "unless BC and Cali crack or Mexico makes immediate moves to flex some naval muscle in the Pacific, then the game is over." If those things happen then yes there is much to play for. But last seasons moves show Mexico edging more and more into the Caribbean and shows only the faint and probably staged movement north of a lone Cali fleet.

So like i said, and again I quote "another season or two on the current course..." and there won't be much left to discuss.

Just to set the record straight Rob (in case you or anyone else is interested) - the HL 'fudge' of the foolproof plan came at least in part due to my instigation - I thought he might be interested to know that you thought of him as being (I quote) "easily manipulated" and passed along those words of yours.

I have to admit, once I found that you viewed your relationship with your allies as one of mere manipulation, I lost interest in any long term relationship with you, even if that meant risking HL and Quebec combining to hit me in the future.

Frankly I wonder why Florida still sticks by you, and how manipulable you think he is.

That all being said, I don't see how this game is at the point of being proposed as a BC/Cali draw, when there's an alive and powerful Mexico and Florida that could easily contest that draw. And nothing says Cali or Florida couldn't pursue a solo venture. There's a lot of game left, methinks, and I'm sure there's plenty of chance that I'll also enjoy the feeling of clinging to a last few provinces (Artic Pirates Ho!) at some point...

And I hope you'll enjoy that feeling as well, before the end.

Andrew

DC138 Winter Of Our Discontent - Spring 2006 - Har... - FuzzyLogic   (Mar 19, 2008, 1:23 pm)
Ya know if you’d stop dropping your front line units maybe you could stop those huge empires in the west. I’m sure you’ll keep going at me tho, the little guy with two measly fleets just trying to stay alive, and Cali/BC will keep expanding. But of course you prefer me as your enemy, you’ve made that clear.

guess I have swallowed my words eh Sims

I didn’t know you used words. Based on the complete disconnect between what you’ve said this game and what you’ve ordered, I figured you were just speaking gibberish.

Fuck... Fuck.... Fuckitty Fuck Fuck Fuck!!!

Our sage guru of all guru-ness plucks this from his Spring 2006 Fortune Cookie: You will soon be more aware of your growing awareness.

Course, we're all aware of hind-sight. Mexico puts on an eye-patch and peg-leg, moving into Carribean waters. New York continues to struggle against the wrath of the previously-stabbed and the weather channels split in disagreement over the coming Canadian cold front or Sunny Californian glow...

One retreat required after all of that - the New York fleet in the Gulf of St Lawrence finds itself finding a new port. Either Newfoundland or Quebec, the American sailors will soon find themselves in a land with strange-speaking people. Deadline for the Summer 2006 retreat will be set for Sunday, March 16th (11:59 PM GMT).

DC138 Winter Of Our Discontent - Spring 2006 - Hard On Equipment (dc138) roback80 Mar 19, 04:03 pm
Andrew,

firstly I think you are thinking of the wrong foolproof plan as our communication when HL fudged it wasminimal long before my "easily manipulated" statement.

Andrew

Aw Sims... in this game there was no disconnect between my words and my orders to anyone until HL decided to fudge a foolproof (or so I thought) plan to take MON and QUE from you.

Rob

DC138 Winter Of Our Discontent - Spring 2006 - Hard On Equipment (dc138) FuzzyLogic Mar 19, 05:44 pm

Rob

…pretty much confirms that.

Either Newfoundland or Quebec , the American sailors will soon find themselves in a land with strange-speaking people. Deadline for the Summer 2006 retreat will be set for Sunday, March 16th (11:59 PM GMT).

Cheers all. Please just let me know if you spot any mistakes.

On this I differ. I have successfully played both all game to a three way. Of course, not with Sims as a partner so if you are making a SPECIFIC argument in his case, I'll concede the point.
