Cutting Support Where It Shouldn't - test_gm (Sep 13, 2007, 12:00 am) |
Mike, I think you're right here.
It looks as though the Austrian attack from Vienna is succeeding in cutting support in Galicia. That obviously can't happen in a case where the support is being used for an attack on Vienna.
Looks as though you found an RP glitch. Interesting. Wonder who we would notify about this...[Reply] |
Unknown - test_gm (Sep 13, 2007, 12:00 am) |
My understanding is (and perhaps it is because i play a lot of variants), although I dont have anywhere near the experience of my nemesis.. Mr Cohen..
The 'beleagured garrison' rule is in effect that the unit does not have to retreat because it is attacked by 2 opposing attacks of equal strength.
It does not imply that the unit still retains it's supporting power bceause it is under attack. It merely does not have to retreat. I'd call this a soft hold because i've been talking to Kornel too much.
So in Mike's example, I would break it down like this
(1) The unit in Galicia is taken out of the attack because it is attacked by Vienna with support. At this stage it's support is cut and it needs to retreat.
(2) The attack in galicia by russia means he is forcing the beleagured garrision rule - this Galica does not have to retreat. (it's soft holding)
(3) The attack on Vienna fails because there is no support.
Now i know, diplomacy moves all happen simultaneosuly and at the same time, but i think the way realpolitik is designed it would take these process steps as it goes through...
so I would definately lean in favour that realpolitk has got it right in this case.[Reply] |
Unknown - test_gm (Sep 13, 2007, 12:00 am) |
and to follow up
because in this example... where GAL receives support in holding even though it's under attack from 2 sides of equal strength.. the support on Vienna is allowed.
So in my example above
(1) The unit in Galicia is attacked by Vienna with support. At this stage it's is not dislodged from Galicia because of support from the Italian army. Therefore it is NO subject to the beleagured garrison rule.
(2) The attack on galicia by russia has no effect in this case.
(3) The attack on Vienna by germany then suceeds because Vienna cannot cut support from Galicia and Galica was not dislodged.
Many people make this mistake. They assume the Beleagured garrison rule means the unit is fine. It acutally means the unit is 'dislodged' but does not have to retreat......
and dislodged units dont provide support...
Interesting discussion though, thanks Mike.[Reply] |
Just to be argumentative - test_gm (Sep 13, 2007, 12:00 am) |
Surprise, surprise.. I disagree.
The 2:2 standoff between Austria and Russia in Galicia make it so that neither attack actually occurs. How can the army in Galicia actually be 'dislodged' if the Austrian attack did not actually take place?
In addition, I have never heard of a situation where a unit was dislodged but not forced to retreat.
Of course, because of the 'planned' attack by Austria that would typically mean that the support fom Galicia was still cut. Except where that Vienna cannot cut support for an attack on itself.[Reply] |
Good Old Dip Rules... - test_gm (Sep 13, 2007, 12:00 am) |
Yup - it's right there on page 6 of the standard Dip rules:
http://www.wizards.com/avalonhill/rules/diplomacy.pdf
A standoff does not dislodge a unit already in the province where the standoff took place. If two units (or forces of equal strength) attack the same province, thus standing each other off, a unit already in that province is not dislodged.
So, based on that, the army in Galicia remains unaffected by the Austrian attack and its support for the German attack should remain in place.[Reply] |
Unknown - test_gm (Sep 13, 2007, 12:00 am) |
Well I think that rule clears it up. Good find. So the unit is not dislodged at all (as opposed to dislodged but not forced to retreat)...
The support is valid, and Boh-Vie should succeed.
I think this is a RP glitch, because the moves should never be ordered that way, save by mistake. In EVERY case, Russia is better off simply ordering Rum S Gal, instead of Rum S Ukr-Gal -- If his goal is to preserve Gal by supporting Ukr into it, he should just support it directly instead.
Given this, I bet it was just never thought of that anyone would ever do a self standoff to try to protect a country that's not moving anyways... Self-Standoffs like that are typically used when you plan to MOVE Gal instead. Thus it was probly just never even considered in writing the logic.
I guess I can think of some extremely rare cases where it could be used in game...
Say the Rumanian is Turkish. Turkey will agree to support Ukr-Gal, but not agree to just support Gal directly (he wants Russia to move away from him) so Russia tells him he's moving Gal-Vie (with support from Germany) and Ukr-Gal (with support from Turkey).
Then Russia goes BAM (Emeril style) and instead, orders the support for Boh-Vie, and uses the Turk support to create a standoff in Gal... thereby helping the German, and well... not sure what it does for himself.
Note, Russia could have just ordered Ukr S Gal, but say he was expecting a pesky Englishman who took Warsaw to order War-Ukr, so he knows Ukr cannot support. Thus he uses the support from Turkey, and the fact that his own move of Ukr-Gal does not cut his own support, and this scenario has now existed in a real game.[Reply] |
Re: Cutting Support Where It Shouldn't - test_gm (Sep 13, 2007, 12:00 am) |
Looks as though you found an RP glitch. Interesting. Wonder who we would notify about this...
You should probably post in the RPforum (I think that is the spelling) yahoogroup.[Reply] |
Unknown - test_gm (Sep 13, 2007, 12:00 am) |
Nemesis? Hah! The rule is pretty clear that the suppport is not cut by an attack from the province to which the support is being given, and here the unit is not being dislodged, it is remains in its province due to the beleaguered garrison rule.
My understanding is (and perhaps it is because i play a lot of variants), although I dont have anywhere near the experience of my nemesis.. Mr Cohen..

dc151 f02 results! - minor detail - test_gm (Sep 13, 2007, 12:00 am) |
Slight change!
The Italian convoyed to Smy, not Syr!
The convoy therefore fails, everything else is the same.
Retreats & builds still by tomorrow!
-mike
One unit is dislodged - English North Sea. Two others are disbanded, NRP (no retreat possible).
Many builds and disbands due tomorrow 4pm Pacific, tho most of the new units go to nations that either start with Fra or end with Ussia… (no, not Fraussia)
** Given the short deadlines, I will send out results as soon as I have a full set of 5 orders **
England: Retreat NTH and Remove 1
France: Build 2
Germany: Build 1
Russia: Build 3
Turkey: Build 1
Builds may be ordered conditional upon the retreat, tho they are all due together.

DC147 - Minor Builds Count Adjustments - test_gm (Sep 13, 2007, 12:00 am) |
Hi folks,
My most sincere apologies. I flubbed two errors into the DC147 Winter builds counts in my rush to get the results out this evening.
1. Turkey may retreat the army in Serbia to Albania - it is not Automatically Disbanded. If retreated to Albania, Turkey is at zero adjustments - if retreated OTB, Turkey gains one build.
2. I failed to credit England with the gain of Kiel. With it in hand, England gains 3 builds.
Sorry for the errors. I will update the gamepage tomorrow morning and issue an official revised build count at that time.
Cheers,
Trout[Reply] |
