WWIV s01 results! All things considered... - test_gm (Sep 13, 2007, 12:00 am) |
All things considered, a relatively peaceful start!
2 bounces to note: Argentina and Brazil stand off over the Southwest Atlantic, while Asia and Iran bump in Ashgabat. One failed order, the Japanese navy gets marooned in port while the Philippines take the NPS by force. Other than those, all others succeed as ordered!
NEXT: Fall 01 – 1 week: Wed July 2, 10am Pacific / 5pm UTC!
Then Winter 01 (retreats and builds): Monday July 7, 10am Pacific. If you’re going to be away for the holiday, be sure to turn in conditional retreats and builds with your fall orders!
Enjoy,
-mike

DC196 Heroes and Villains - Game-Launch!! - test_gm (Sep 13, 2007, 12:00 am) |
Hi folks,
Welcome to DC-196, which I've affectionately titled 'Heroes and Villains.' Thanks to all of you for your patience while I collected confirmations from everyone. With that behind us, we're set to rock and roll.
You'll find attached a copy of my house rules - I know they're somewhat intimidating but please take some time and run through them. Any grey areas that will come up during game-play will be resolved using these, so its best to know whats in them. If you have any questions or comments, please just let me know.
A couple notes to bring up - English is not everyone's first language in this group so please be aware of that. As a grumpy redneck Western Canadian, its best to use single syllable words with me. =) Also, please note that Jean-Luc and Laurence are related - this will have ZERO affect on game-play but there it is for the record.
With that, we're off! Happy dipping folks! Spring 1901 orders will be due Wednesday, July 2nd (11:59 PM GMT).
Cheers everyone!

Gerry,
I saw something today that may be a "feature" of the Youngstown
variant. I did not see any note in the wiki to the contrary, so want
to bring this to your/Italy's attention for next turn. I presume that
if my interpretation is incorrect, you will correct me.
In the Youngstown variant map file (both the one sent out and the one
on dipcorp), the Off Board Boxes reference the other OBs that they can
go to (in their respective box). In general, we've understood that
this means each can touch it's neighbor(s), and some more (e.g. k can
touch B, C, J, L). Off Board Box I (eye) and Off Board Box J do not
specifically list each other. OBI does list C and H while OBJ does
list C and K.
That may make a difference to Italy and my movements. As I do not use
Realpolitik, I do not know what the dpy file allows.
Just a heads up, thanks!

DC136 Avenging Disco Godfathers - Winter 1913 - Ni... - test_gm (Sep 13, 2007, 12:00 am) |
We groove on up the mountain-top... Fleets are the modus operandi in this funky bunch, with new navies arising in Smyrna, Constantinople and Kiel. Meanwhile, the French bid adieu to Albania and Trieste.
Onwards we battle - it looks bad for the French now, but then it looked bad for Germany for a time as well.. And can the Turkish continue their twelve-step recovery plan? =)
Deadline for Spring 1914 orders will be set for Tuesday, July 1st (11:59 PM GMT). Cheers folks!

Sorry for the delay in getting this out...I got far too involved in the football game on the TV last night (Germany v Turkey for anyone that's interested) and clean forgot about the adjudication...
Anyway, Fall 1904 sees the squeeze continuing to be put on England and Turkey...despite England's best efforts, he can't get back either Belguim or Denmark, and loses the North Sea to boot. He holds on to Kiel though, which finally sees Germany off the map...
Out east, Turkey loses Constantinople to Italian invaders and drops to two units.
I'm gonna go for retreats and builds at the same time, and set a deadline of Monday 30th at 2000 GMT. I need one build each off France, Italy and Russia, and a retreat and (if the retreated unit doesn't retreat off the board) a disband from England. Should I get confirmed retreats and builds/disbands prior to the deadline, I'll adjudicate early...

DC159 Russian EOG Statement - test_gm (Sep 13, 2007, 12:00 am) |
Hi folks,
Well, thanks to Penger for an excellent game as always. Also thanks to all my fellow players for joining in. It was kindof a quiet game, but one that I really enjoyed. I have to admit that I did spend quite a bit of time looking at the maps to see which provinces would soon be submerged and planning out how to move the troops.
Things started out fairly well - I managed to have good relations with all the powers - most importantly managing to secure a peace with England in the north and a neutral border with Germany. Fairly confident that the West would be duking it out, I hooked up with Nick and initiated the R/T Steamroller. It worked with smashing success.
The thing is, this whole game is a simple race to the middle of the board. Its one of the only variants I know that the middle powers have the advantage - they are already in position to win. The outer powers need to first smash their way through the central defenses before being able to gain high ground in Switzerland.
Weirdly though, the strategy articles for Deluge suggest that Russia should attack Turkey and take the Turkish high-grounds that last till near the end of the game. This didn't really strike me as a good idea - as Turkey is always a tough nut to crack. Getting involved in a turf war that would last several years would do nothing but impede Russia's chances of getting to the middle of the board in time.
Nontheless, I did try to convince folks that I'd be going for Turkey. It was a nasty trick on my part, but happily it worked out for me. =P
By 1904 I believe I had over half the remaining centers on the board. At that point, IF France, Italy and Turkey had banded together they MIGHT have had a chance to stop me.. But as I told Penger, there's a reason why most variants declare the winning condition to be half + one. I felt the key province to the puzzle was Tyrolia, and did what I could to protect it. In the meantime I allowed France to be first into Switzerland before knocking him out and pretended that I was interested in a Russian / Turkish draw to Nick in an attempt to keep him onside. (Sorry Nick, have to admit that the only thing I was interested in in this game was a solo... Hope you can forgive me there..)
So once again, my thanks to my valiant opponents. Congratulations to Penger for running yet another fun and successful game, and kudos to Nick for being with me there all the way to the end and surviving the flood. =P
Cheers everyone. See you all on the next board - where I totally expect to be creamed. *grin*

DC175 - 7 Pedigree Rats GAME END SPRING 1910 - test_gm (Sep 13, 2007, 12:00 am) |
DIPLOMATICCORP DC175 - 7 PEDIGREE RATS
STANDARD GAME, STANDARD MAP, 2-SEASON GAME YEAR
ADJUDICATION SPRING 1910 (TURN 19) GAME END
WEDNESDAY 25th JUNE 2008
GM Comment:
As we entered Spring 1910, a vote was called proposing a solo win for Turkey and survivals for Germany and France. This proposal was carried by the remaining players. Consequently we have a final result.
TURKEY WINS A SOLO VICTORY (Congratulation to Drew)
FRANCE SURVIVES
GERMANY SURVIVES
My thanks go to the above players and the others who were eliminated. Particular thanks should go to Tom (France) who kept on with the game even having been reduced to 1 SC (which he upped to 2 SC in the previous turn).
The game was slightly unbalanced by Austria being abandoned in Fall 1905 when the strongest power, however as a central power both Turkey and Germany had the potential to take advantage of the CD. In the end Tirkey was probably best placed as Germany still had England to contend with.
The game was notable for one of the largest fleet engagements I've seen in a long time up in Scandavania between Germany and England between Spring 1904 and Fall 1907.
I'll put a GM end of game report onto the DC175 Message Board in due course.
A link to the GM House Rules and information on 2-season Diplomacy showing the way retreats and adjustments were ordered can be found DC175 game page at http://sforza.50webs.com/
The Rules of the Game of Diplomacy (2008 5th Edition) can be found at http://wizards.com/avalonhill/rules/diplomacy_rulebook.pdf
These results will also be posted to the DiplomaticCorp DC175 game page and message board.
Orders (none required as vote called prior to deadline):

England: ELIMINATED AFTER ABANDONED BY PLAYER

DC 175: Seven Pedigree Rats...End Game - test_gm (Sep 13, 2007, 12:00 am) |
Hey Paolo…as you requested,
End Game Player Commentary (Germany 13 centers)
This was the first Diplomacy game I have played in a while and only the second time I have ever played online. Our GM was very helpful in getting me (as a relative newbie) acclimated to the game. He clarified rules and referred me to specific section when I had questions. His direction coupled with his timely return of results made the game very enjoyable.
The two season system took a little getting used to. It allows for a very fast pace to the game, which I liked. But it can lead to some very convoluted planning…Especially during the fall turns when move orders, retreats and builds must all be anticipated at once. This system really forced me to think into the future. It was like playing chess and having to write three moves out in advance. Very tricky!
Then there’s my fellow players: I guess it is common for folks to drop out of these games, and that is too bad. The game would have ended much differently had Austria remained in the game. But on the positive side…I have to say I really admired how Tom/France stuck it out all the way. Sitting with one center for several game years, he kept in the game when others might have just bailed out. Tom…Even though you were a thorn in my Spain, I appreciated you staying in the game. And of course I have to congratulate Drew on the solo win…blah blah blah…I should never have let you in my back yard. Like I mentioned before…It wasn’t your units taking over the Austria centers that killed me, but the ones that had my guys pinned in place that finally forced my surrender. Great game guys, I look forward to playing with you again sometime…and maybe I’ll try to GM a game in the future. Till then…I’ll just sit here and sharpen my knives.[Reply] |

dc177 reminder (dc177) MattTheLesser Jun 27, 03:33 pm |
Italy, having already used his grace, NMRs, and as a result loses Bud
and Tun to invading forces. In other news we have our first
eliminations, as England and Austria bow out of the game. Thanks to Joe
and Mike for their participation. And lastly I'd like everyone to take
an extra second to appreciate the battle of wits that went on over Edi
this turn, in which France gained the upper hand.
There were only two retreats: Italy had only one option, Bud - Tri, so
that has been done automatically, and Austria is eliminated so his unit
has been cleared from the board.
Thus we move directly to Winter 1904, which is due this coming Monday,
June 30, at 9 pm eastern. Adjustments due are listed below the
adjudication.

DC166 (wb0821) - Fall 1914 - test_gm (Sep 13, 2007, 12:00 am) |
Things get tense as Africa falls to the English, Turkey finds itself surrounded and all signs point to quite a party soon to come in St. Petersburg...
No retreats are required, and only one adjustment for Winter - a build for England. However, we do have two end-game proposals to munch on:
1. An Austrian/English draw
2. An English solo.
Please have your votes for both in with the Winter deadline of Friday, June 27th (11:59 PM GMT). Any abstentions will count as a 'no'.
Cheers folks. Please let me know if you spot any errors.
