DC104 Invitational - Fall 1908 - Forever For Her (... - test_gm   (Sep 13, 2007, 12:00 am)
I am in.

I will however attend the big gamefair in Essen and have som holliday time. So I
will be aut of circulation until the 28. October.

Yours
Erik

Quoting Stephen Lytton <stevelytton(at)hotmail.com>:

Gentlemen.

Round 2 is likely to kick off within the next week or so. There are a few
adminstrative issues that need to be run before that
starts though.

Firstly, i need the players to confirm to me, if they are able to play in the
second round of the competition.

Could i have yes or no confirmations asap please?

The game/variant for round 2 will be selected by voting on it. Once you have
voted, you
are 'effectively' locked into the game and will score a CD if you choose not
to play
based on the variant.

At this stage, I am waiting to hear from :-

mike(at)southwall.com; stevelytton(at)hotmail.com; tfletch33(at)yahoo.comDeep within
the bomb-proof walls of an undisclosed location in southern Europe, the
leaders of the unoccupied territories gathered. The walls shook as
explosions rocked the ground above them - dust sifting from the ceiling with
each bone-jarring thump to collect on the ground. The Tsar pointed at the map
spread on the table before them. "Nyet, comrades. This cannot be!" His
finger hovered above the black dot that represented Vienna, as if somehow he
could change it back from black to red. The pink-clad Austrian before him
grimaced. "Unfortunately, its true. The attack from Tyrolia was too much
for us to hold.""But can they really be at nineteen supply centers?" The
Italian questioned - his voice cracking. The Sultan smirked. "Their gains
came in the west, from France, not from our Eastern centers." He sat in his
chair quietly smoking his hookah and trying to ignore the sounds of the war
above them. "We might as well all be waving white flags." At that moment,
the door opened and the French President walked in. His wardrobe consisted
of shining white garments, from his stylish coat to his burnished shoes. A
white beret topped his smiling face. Whistling to himself, he stopped as he
suddenly noticed that the other four men were glaring at him. "What?" he
asked. "Something I said?" ------------------------------And with France, so
goes the board. Congratulations to Mike Sims for a sweeping 19 center German
solo victory in DC-104. Finessing his way back into Vienna, the German also
storms into Marseilles and Spain to seal the deal. And with that, the first
round of the Invitational comes to a close. There was one retreat required
from Spain, but it had only the Gulf of Lyons to go to. But of course, that
is purely window-dressing with the game resolved. My thanks to all you
players who made this game a very memorable one. EOG's are, of course,
extremely welcome. I would greatly look forward to what all of you have to
say about this crazy game of ours. It's been an honour being the GM for this
- my hat is off to all of you. As always, please let me know if I've made a
mistake at all in the adjudication. For those who keep track of these
things, the last few Subject Headers came from the great White Stripes album
"Get Thee Behind Me Satan." Cheers! (And congratulations once again to
Mike..)Trout

I climbed a peak called Hoodoos in Kotenei in BC with a couple of women from Edmonton and picnicked atop with what they represented as Canadian delicacies: fried cheese (I think it was Velveeta), boiled (yes boiled) steak, medium boiled eggs and Twinkies--with everything but the Twinkies dipped in miracle Whip. Although it was FAR better than the deep fried Snickers you get at the Indiana state fair, the corn dogs at the Nebraska state fair and the shrimp and peanut butter sandwiches (on white bread) at Big Blow's in Hardeeville, SC.

The march took place in hundreds of cities across Europe and North America. Around the world, tens of thousands of women hoisted their placards and took to the streets. Work everywhere ground to a halt in London as Millwrights, Carpenters and even Policemen left their jobs to join the protest. In Moscow, the cold Spring wind didn't dampen the enthusiasm of the militant mothers calling their sons home. In Washington, the police formed a skirmish line in front of the Lincoln Memorial but could only stand mute as first one lady, then another, then hundreds more simply walked between the raised truncheons - unimpressed by the mere show of force.

All around the globe, the Millions Mothers Marched calling for an end to the war.

And in a dimly lit cave at an undisclosed location in Germany, an evil figure rubbed his hands together - laughing maniacally...

---------------------------------------------------------

Germany tightens the screws in Spring 07 and comes oh so close to a solo. Time, and the Fall orders, will see if the Kaiser can pull it out. On the board, Russia positions southwards while Germany positions northwards, England sails south to Gascony and Turkey provides the key support for the Russians holding in Serbia.

No retreats required - we move on to Fall 1907. I'd like to set the deadline for Friday, September 28th (11:59 PM GMT.) If anyone feels this is too soon, please let me know though.

Also, our CD soundtrack spins to a close with this adjudication. For the last little while, the subject headers have been coming from Paramore - Riot! Just in case you keep track of these things. =)

Cheers all. Please just let me know if you spot any mistakes.

trout didn't you get my final final final set???

I am now doomed to ridicule, again

On Oct 5, 2007, at 10:08 PM, Former Trout wrote:

Hellfire and damnation raged over Vienna.  As the struggling German occupiers paused to catch their breath, a final wave of exhausted Austrians surged through No-Man's-Land, wading through the Kraut artillery and into their enemies trenches.  The battle carried into the streets of the city, and the citizens cheered as they saw their bedraggled troops return home - the Germans returning once more to the mountain passes of Tyrolia.

Meanwhile, in Paris at the broad end of the Champs Elysees the Kaiser excitedly jabbed his finger towards the towering form of the Arc d'Triomphe.  "I want one," he demanded.  The French President, standing beside him, nodded.

"Oui.  This, we do."

--------------------------------------------------------------------------

Brave struggles in the east are undercut by French movement in the west.  But you never know - miracles can happen.

One retreat to worry about after the Spring moves - the French fleet in the Mid Atlantic was dislodged and needs to find a new home.  Felix, I've set the deadline for Sunday, October 7th (11:59 PM GMT).  I will adjudicate sooner if you get me a retreat marked final.

Cheers everyone.  Please let me know if you spot an error.

DC104 Invitational - Winter 1907 - The Nurse - test_gm   (Sep 13, 2007, 12:00 am)
In a message dated 10/2/2007 1:21:52 A.M. Eastern Daylight Time, former.trout(at)gmail.com writes:

"Ach. I am here." A small mountain stepped into the room. The thickly muscled, and even thicker moustached, German was a colossus. Easily seven feet tall, his bulk filled the antechamber. The Kraut shrugged his shoulders and a sound like boulders falling down a hill filled the hall.

"Right then, well that's it for me." The Englishman threw in his towel. "I'm off for a spot of tea. You chaps have fun now. Cheerio."

But the Austrians had been smart enough to send a Jew named David ben Jesse who instantly went for his slingshot.

DC104 Invitational - Winter 1907 - The Nurse - test_gm   (Sep 13, 2007, 12:00 am)
The Champions of England, Turkey, Russia, Italy and Austria met in the anteroom of the Arena. The crowd could be heard roaring and chanting above them, the thunder of applause reverberating through the halls. The five men, all ultimate fighting medalists in their respective countries, paced, did push-ups or otherwise tried to loosen up and not show their nerves. The bout was only an exhibition - but all five champions had felt the pressure from home to come back with the win.

"Where's the Frenchman?" the Italian finally asked.

The Austrian shared a grin with the Turk. "Last we saw him, he was on a plane for Edinburgh. Kept muttering something about something called the Fiafranchetto."

The Turk laughed. "Yeah - that and he kept saying 'Gold gold gold'..."

The Russian snorted. "It's not the Frenchman I'm worried about, comrades. Where is the German?"

Cheerio."

---------------------------------------

Germany builds two armies and a fleet, Russia disbands in the Black Sea and we wish our friend Steve a fond adieu. The Invitational carries on, with Spring 1908 orders due on Friday, October 5th (11:59 PM GMT).

Thanks everyone,

DC104 Invitational - Fall 1907 - Blue Orchid - test_gm   (Sep 13, 2007, 12:00 am)
The trio of Italian boats navigated the Venice canals, speeding through the twisted maze of waterways. Around them, the sinking city burned as all hell rained down upon it. Twisted hunks of metal - ruined vessels from previous forays, created jagged obstacles in their path. The high-pitched whine of gunfire sounded all around them. Suddenly, the gunfire ceased.

"Three German boats behind us," reported the junior pilot, Green-Five

"Stay on target.." replied Green-Seven as he began evasive maneuvers. "Stay on target."

Machine-gun fire raked across Five's stern, his motor began to smoke. "I'm hit!"

"Get out of there, Five!" Green-Two, the lead vessel yelled back. "You can't do any good back there!"

"Sorry!" Green-Five rounded a corner, exiting the main canal trench. The German boats let him go, zooming after the two continuing Italian vessels. Green-Five weaved back and forth, desperately trying to shake them off. With merciless precision, the central German boat tracked him, then fired a burst of rounds into the boats fuel tank. Metal spewed in all directions as the fireball filled the canal.

Suddenly alone, Green-Two began his evasion pattern. Behind him, the central German boat tracked him, waiting for the Italian ship to fall into his gunsights. "Hmm, the Captain thought. The Luck is strong with this one."

Ahead, the German command post loomed. A dark metallic egg rising above the canals. As the Italian readied his bomb, the German behind him prepared to fire. Suddenly, a torpedo fell out of the sky, exploding the German boat on the right flank. Overhead, a Turkish plane zoomed by, the pilot giving a thumbs up and yelling "Yee-haw!!" The planes machine gun began to strafe the canal, pulverizing the German boat on the left. The central boat, spinning to avoid the explosion, hit some wreckage and launched up out of the canal and onto a city street.

"You're in the clear, kid!" Yelled the Turkish pilot. "Now blow this thing up and lets go home!"

Grinning broadly, Green-Two launched his bomb. Seconds later, explosions rocked the city as the German command post erupted in flames.... Venice had been retaken...

-------------------------

Apologies to Lucas for the above hack-job. Yes, with a daring raid on Venice and a joint Austro-Turkish foray into Trieste, the rebel alliance deals a blow to the dark side and prevents a German solo. The Kaiser reaches 17 centers, a whisper from the 18 he needs for world domination. Meanwhile, receiving no help from France, England loses their last center in Brest and becomes eliminated.

Two retreats were needed after the Fall moves, but one was an automatic disband and the other had only one option so I took the liberty. The German army in Trieste was disbanded and, as mentioned, the black army in Venice was forced out to Piedmont. Mike, if OTB is preferred please just let me know. Otherwise, I'll set the Winter 1907 Adjustment deadline for Monday, October 1st (11:59 PM GMT).

Please let me know if you spot any errors in the adjudication. Cheers all,

Trout
