1648 091010: Winter 1657 Retreats/Adjustments - charlesf   (Apr 30, 2010, 5:02 pm)

Hallo zusammen,

the Sejm has passed an ambitious naval armaments bill. The Polish Vasas may
perhaps want to enforce their Scandinavian birthright. The English, Swedes and
Turks however appear quite uninterested in expanding (or, in the case of Sweden,
reestablishing) their navies.

Given Harvey's upcoming medical procedure and
Aidan's leisurely foray into Russia, we're now looking at a May 12 Spring
1658 deadline, it being subject to me having heard from these to players prior
to that date.

Happy Labour Day!

Charles

Hi Everyone -

Just a quick update.  I had my medical procedure Tuesday - 6 hours under general anesthetics  - really knocked me out.  I was discharged from the hospital yesterday.  Now we have to wait to see the results.

Thanks for all your good wishes.

Harvey

1648 091010: Fall 1657 Moves - charlesf   (Apr 28, 2010, 7:16 pm)

Hallo zusammen,

this season marking the end of the Lord Protector's
Russian adventure. Clearly puritanism hasn't caught on in the Russias. Perhaps
zealous Jesuits sent out from Poland shall fare better with the Russia's
recalcitrant peasantry, intransigent clergy and stuffy boyars?
The English proselytisers have left utterly disillusioned...

Talking of religious affairs, the call of the
muezzin can now even be heard in the Eternal City and the Pope has recognised
the Sultan as his protector.

And what about the champion of Lutheranism?
Sweden's feeling the squeeze in her corner of Germany. A whopping 86%
of key territories (i.e. SCs) within the Empire are now under Catholic rule. If
that ain't the mark of the counterreformation...

The Winter 1657 deadline shall
follow on 30 April, 6 PM CET.

Liebe Grüsse,

Charles

1648 091010: Spring 1657 Moves - Correction - charlesf   (Apr 23, 2010, 5:02 am)

I'm afraid a mistake crept into the past
adjucation. Apparently by misclick I managed to enter "A Trieste - Greater
Poland" rather than Mike's actual order "A Trieste Supports A Venice Hold".
Thanks, Mike, for pointing that out. Not that it makes any material difference,
but we obviously want an entirely correct record. You players checking things
over is the last line of defence against such snafus.

Anyway, you'll find the corrected adjucation further below.

Hallo zusammen,

well, Novgorod must now be no more than a heap of rubbles. The city has now
changed hands six times over the past decade and perhaps the suffering
inhabitants shall now find some peace under Polish rule.

John II Casimir also will have received welcome news from his naval
commanders as a Polish squadron has for the very first time (in variant history,
I might add) made a successful naval sortie.

The territorial status quo in Germany remains much the same, yet in Italy
the old order has taken another hit as the Spanish viceroy in Naples chose to
pack his bags rather than trying to mount a spirited defence against the
oncoming Ottoman hordes.

Well, I hope Bayern Munich will display more of the élan the Turks have
shown (and they've got the Turkish player Altintop in their ranks!) than them
simply surrending the midfield to Olympique Lyon in the manner Spain has
relinquished Italy. Okay, totally specious analogy... I'm just looking forward
to tonight's game! Smile

The Summer deadline follows on Friday, while the Fall 1657 prelims are due
on Monday and the final deadline shall follow on 28 April, 6 PM
CET.

Liebe Grüsse,

Charles

1648 091010: Draw Proposal Vote - charlesf   (Apr 22, 2010, 8:33 am)
Hi guys,

A DIAS draw proposal has been submitted to me and
I'm now putting that to a vote. The deadline coincides with our Friday 6 PM CET
deadline.

I might adjucate prior to the deadline should the DIAS fail.

Well, well... Seems like Bayern had some of that Turkish fervour I spoke
of. Though in the case of Ribéry, arguably too much so. :p Poor guy's having a
nightmarish week. Though I can't see the French authorities actually sending him
to prison...

1648 091010: Spring 1657 Moves - Addendum - charlesf   (Apr 21, 2010, 12:33 pm)
Didn't mean to imply any criticism in regards to
the Italian situation in my football analogy. After all, in the beautiful game
you don't have a third team involved. Just wanted to note that since having
reread my remarks, I can see how my comments might be taken as overstepping the
bounds of neutral "flavour talk".

Hallo zusammen,

well, Novgorod must now be no more than a heap of rubbles. The city has now
changed hands six times over the past decade and perhaps the suffering
inhabitants shall now find some peace under Polish rule.

John II Casimir also will have received welcome news from his naval
commanders as a Polish squadron has for the very first time (in variant
history, I might add) made a successful naval sortie.

The territorial status quo in Germany remains much the same, yet in Italy
the old order has taken another hit as the Spanish viceroy in Naples chose
to pack his bags rather than trying to mount a spirited defence against the
oncoming Ottoman hordes.

Well, I hope Bayern Munich will display more of the élan the Turks have
shown (and they've got the Turkish player Altintop in their ranks!) than
them simply surrending the midfield to Olympique Lyon in the manner Spain
has relinquished Italy. Okay, totally specious analogy... I'm just looking
forward to tonight's game! Smile

The Summer deadline follows on Friday, while the Fall 1657 prelims are due
on Monday and the final deadline shall follow on 28 April, 6 PM CET.

1648 091010: Deadline Schedule - charlesf   (Apr 17, 2010, 3:54 am)
Hi guys,

let me give you a heads-up as to how I mean to
handle both Harvey's (2-9 May) and Aidan's (1-16 May) absences:

    o Winter 1657 Retreats/Adjustments: 30 April
    o Spring 1658 Moves: (10) 12 May***
    o Summer 1658 Retreats: 14 May***
    o Fall 1658 Moves: (17) 19 May***

As Aidan shall be over in Susdal (Russia), he's as yet not sure whether
he'll be able to access the internet (I would think the internet café density
would be arguably higher there than in say the US, UK or Germany). I shall
view the lack of a Turkish set of orders during that time interval as an
implied request for a deadline extension. Similarly, I'll regard the
12 May deadline as being conditional on me having heard from Harvey since his
return from hospital.

So, at the very latest, the Spring 1658 Moves deadline would be on 19 May
(barring some other deadline extension requests).

I hope this course suits everyone well.

Cheers,

Charles

Hello to All -

I have just made a request of Charles.  I have asked him to not schedule any deadlines between 2 May and 9 May.  During that period I will be away from home, having a medical procedure done in Los Angeles.  Although I will likely be hospitalized for just two days, I am not certain how much internet access I will have during the entire week that I am there, nor am I certain as to how much energy and focus I will be able to devote to the game.

Hallo zusammen,

the good burghers of Frankfurt are revelling in the celebrations
surrounding the imperial coronation, hailed by pamphletists in the pay of
Mazarin as the restoration of Charlemagne's empire (and to be sure, the
Bourbon-controlled territories almost entirely match those under Charlemagne's
rule). Meanwhile the cardinal is busy coordinating an ambitious armaments
programme. Both wharves in Brittany and in Flanders have been furiously working
on state-of-the-art ships-of-the-line for the Sun-Emperor.

Alarmed by rumours of a possible French naval descent and planned royalist
risings, the Lord Protector has hastily scraped together a bunch of armed
merchantmen in the "capital of the West country" as the bulk of the
Commonwealth's forces remain engaged in Eastern affairs. Is it "1588" all over
again?

Down in Castile, bards are immortalising the long march of the valiant Army
of Flanders that recently surrendered to pursuing French regiments. And these
songs and tales evidently have resonated with Castile's youth as they've joined
the king's regiments in great numbers.

I'm curious what 1657 shall hold for us!

Spring 1657 prelims are due on Monday and the final deadline shall
follow on 21 April, 6 PM CET.

Liebe Grüsse,

Charles

1648 091010: Fall 1656 Moves - charlesf   (Apr 14, 2010, 12:36 pm)

Hi guys,

the Electoral College of the Holy Roman Empire convened for an
extraordinary session in the imperial city of Frankfurt to elect a new King of
the Romans and future Holy Roman Emperor of the German Nation following the
death of Kaiser Ferdinand III of Habsburg. The Margrave of Brandenburg backed a
Protestant contender. The Habsburg candidate only won the vote of the Dukes of
Bavaria and Saxony, next to the one vote he himself was able to cast in his
capacity as King of Bohemia. Yet it was the Bourbon bid for the imperial
crown won the day as all three Archbishops and the Count-Palatine
ended up casting their vote for His Most Christian Majesty.

The Louis XIV, the Sun-King, may now style himself "Louis V, by the
grace of God elected Holy Roman Emperor, forever August, King in Germany, Most
Christian King of France and Navarre, Coprince of Andorra, Count of Provence,
Forcalquier and the lands adjacent; Dauphin of Viennois, Count of Valentinois
and of Diois etc." I guess Cardinal Mazarin will regard that as the
crowning achievement of lifetime and probably will pass away happily (died
in 1661).

The archchancellory of the realm has already drawn up a new imperial coat
of arms (well, I guess it would have in reality also featured
Navarre's arms, but I didn't find a suitable template to superimpose on the
imperial double-eagle):

Congrats, Nigs, for being the first player to wrest away the Imperial Crown
from the House of Austria. Eternal bragging rights come piece and parcel with
this crown and sceptre!

Strictly speaking though, the actual coronation ceremony will only take
place this winter. So for now, to be quite pedantic (and I enjoy being quite
pedantic!) Louis merely is the new King of the Romans (rex romanorum) and
Emperor-Elect.

Now turning to other matters, it has to be said that this season has also
been quite momentous in a number of other respects. Copenhagen, the United
Provinces, Tuscany and Venice are now controlled by new masters! Does this
mark a new era in European affairs...?

There are quite a few adjustments now in store for us and the deadline for
Winter 1656 shall follow NLT 16 April, 6 PM CET.

Liebe Grüsse,

Charles

1648 091010: HRE Rule - charlesf   (Apr 13, 2010, 5:07 pm)
Nigs, Jorge and Marc,

thanks for your input. I've now added the following to the variant rules after the previously cited excerpt:

"Therefore, the imperial crown may only change hands during winter turns. As adjustments follow in Diplomacy upon winter SC control changes, it follows that a newly elected Holy Roman Emperor may immediately make use of his newly acquired building privileges."

If anyone can come up with a better phrasing, I'll happily accept suggestions. Smile

I think that everything could be inferred from the last paragraph, but the one that precedes it makes the game specifics very clear. Adding a version of it to what you already have makes the rule more immediately comprehensible.

Hi guys,

just a friendly reminder that our deadline's now in less than 24 hours. Wednesday, 6 PM CET.

While I've touched upon this point in quite a few private mails, I think a more general reminder can't do any harm:

The Imperial Crown only changes hands in winter since it is then that actual SC control changes. As builds follow upon winter SC control changes, it follows that HRE privileges may be immediately used upon receiving the imperial honour.

Now, I think this is quite clear from the following sentence in the variant rules: "The Great Power owning the most HRESCs is considered the Holy Roman Emperor and enjoys the described building privileges. The title only is transferred whenever one single Great Power other than the present office-holder (initially Austria) controls the most HRESCs." But my question is to you: Do you think I ought to further elaborate on that or is that sufficiently clear? Did anyone not understand how these things work from reading the rules?

Cheers,

Charles

But my question is to you: Do you think I ought to further elaborate on that or is that sufficiently clear? Did anyone not understand how these things work from reading the rules?

1648 091010: Deadline Reminder - charlesf   (Apr 13, 2010, 4:02 pm)
Hi guys,

just a friendly reminder that our deadline's now in less than 24 hours.

1648 091010: Summer 1656 Retreats - charlesf   (Apr 09, 2010, 4:38 pm)
Hi guys,

I guess it comes to nobody's surprise that the DIAS proposal for this season equally failed.

As for the Polish retreats, Jorge chose to retreat to Pskov and bolster a contiguous line rather than establish a presence behind enemy lines.

Today also marks the day my 1936 playtest has begun! Can't wait to see how the "Spanish Civil War" will pan out! Smile If anyone yet wishes to observe the contest, let me know and I shall add you to the mailing list.

Preliminary orders for Fall 1656 are due on Monday and the adjucation deadline follows on 14 April.

Enjoy your weekend!

Charles

1648 091010: Spring 1656 Moves - charlesf   (Apr 07, 2010, 12:21 pm)
Hi guys,

first of all, let me say that swords won't be turned into ploughshares as the DIAS game-end proposal failed.

On to a brief summary of this season's events: As in recent times, the focal point of military action remains in the wider North. Thus, the English Navy has now reclaimed Novgorod for the Commonwealth, leaving the Poles to decide whether they will to retreat to Pskov or enter the Karelian wilderness.

Further West, the Poles have equally been compelled to retreat from Greater Poland. Though their retreat route back to Warsaw is blocked as Turkish Janissaries have entered the city on the Vistula.

Next to retaking Novgord, England has sought to pave a path further south through Turkestan, yet Polish winged-hussars blocked that route.

What about the Empire? Well, French troops now also control Holstein as the Spanish Army of Flanders has continued its long trek up into Jutland. Louis XIV now has reason to hope that the eight German electors shall convene later in the year to bestow the Imperial Crown upon the Most Christian King (provided the territorial status quo is maintained through the year's fall).

After this tour d'horizon, let me announce that another DIAS game-end proposal has been submitted to a vote. Its deadline shall coincide with the Summer Retreats deadline, meaning that I shall only adjucate prior to the Friday Retreats deadline should I have both the Polish retreat orders and a clear picture on how the game-end vote goes.

Now, almost time for that critical Bayern vs. ManU game! At least in our circle, sympathies appear to be with the Bavarians. A 3-0 vote so far based on what I've heard. So time to avenge 1999 and show that money ain't everything! Smile

Cheers,

Charles

1648 091010: Draw Proposal Vote - charlesf   (Apr 06, 2010, 3:49 pm)
Hi guys,

I'm now back from my "A Bra-Ste" bike tour and there's one matter at hand I need to write you about. A DIAS draw proposal has been submitted to me and I'm now putting that to a vote. The deadline coincides with our Wednesday 6 PM CET deadline.

Tomorrow, I shall try to get the adjucation done prior to the Champions League kick-off. Looking good for Bayern vs. ManU after that classy first-leg game last week. Smile

Hi guys,

as you know, I've scheduled the coming Spring 1656 deadline for next Wednesday, so please get your prelims in no later than Monday.

I shall be offline until late Monday (a bank holiday over here, as is Good Friday) as I'm heading for the Baltic shore (hoping the weather shall remain decent!).

Frohe Ostern!

Hi guys,

just a friendly reminder that our deadline's now in less than 24 hours.

Cheers,

Charles

I think that everything could be inferred from the last paragraph, but the one that precedes it makes the game specifics very clear.  Adding a version of it to what you already have makes the rule more immediately comprehensible.

1648 091010: Winter 1655 Retreats/Adjustments - charlesf   (Mar 31, 2010, 9:50 am)
Hi guys,

since I received a full set of orders and no request for me to delay the adjucation until after the deadline, the winter chill's arriving somewhat early this year. And as the Baltic freezes over, the wharves in the Duchy of Courland are being kept busy by Poland's first-ever building of a Baltic squadron! This is a first for this variant. Roger, the Pole in the previous playtest, was however the first to build a Polish squadron, albeit one designated for Black Sea duty rather than for patrolling Baltic waters.

That being said, it's a long way for Poland to project such naval power from Courland, the erstwhile "Holland of the East", as the enterprising Kettler dukes of Courland were able to. After all, they founded Courlandian colonies as far off as Africa and the West Indies...

1655 AD has been by all accounts a year of continued East-West struggle, with Russia and Northern Germany being arguably the focal points of military action. Shall these trends continue into 1656? Stay tuned.

Given players' Easter schedules, I've shifted the spring deadline to Wednesday, 7 April.

Cheers,

Charles

Hi guys,

as I wrote you players, I only noticed that I had not adjucated with the proper orders right after pressing the mail send button. I thought I had cancelled the mail transfer in time, but unfortunately that was not the case. I apologise for this gaffe of mine. Perhaps I should not drink any wine on adjucation nights! Anyway, what's below has been amended so as to reflect the proper events of this season.

---

If you thought the English would hold on to Novgorod, well, you were mistaken. The Poles retook the ancient city as Cromwell's men focused on securing territory in the East (in doing so, routing the Turkish auxilliaries that had been assisting the Poles these past seasons).

Malicious rumours of Sweden's continued decline proved quite false as Charles X managed to hold on to Brandenburg. Louis XIV earned another easy conquest, next to forcing the Polish Jutland army to surrender after its many exploits.

Now, there are no retreats pending, so it's just adjustments this winter (31 March). Thereafter, we may either move on to a Monday or Wednesday deadline, depending on what players' holiday schedules. I'm expecting some deadline extension request, so Spring 1656 probably will be on post-Easter Wednesday.

Cheers,

Hi guys,

as I wrote you players, I only noticed that I had not adjucated with the proper orders right after pressing the mail send button.

Cheers,

Charles
