dc193 ~ Manefested Destiny - test_gm   (Sep 13, 2007, 12:00 am)
We have our DC number now - DC193. You should also find a section of the forum dedicated to DC193.

Remember, two players leaving town for a week or more this Saturday (6/7), so the deadline for the Spring 1841
turn is...

June 20th, 2359 gmt - the first day of Summer.

You'll find a 2x size, easier to read map, a map showing the start positions, and the files for RealWorld at my Diplomacy Tribune site: http://mainecav.org/diplomacy

I am the other. I'll be out of the country from midday Saturday until

then I'll replay to any and everything as soon as I get back.

dc187 fall 01 results - test_gm   (Sep 13, 2007, 12:00 am)
French forces roll unhindered into Iberia and Belgium, Holland stands
as a lonely independent caught between England and Germany, the
Balkans become crowded, and Italy's army finds the hotel rooms in
Trieste are already occupied. Any hopes of peace in Europe seem
misplaced as always.

Images attached showing the orders and the results.

The deadline for winter 1901 builds will be Thursday, 12 June, at noon
BST (11am GMT). I'd like to make retreat and build phases just 3-days
in future, but one of the players has contacted me to warn they'll be
unavailable over this weekend and for a few days after. Of course, if
I get final build orders from everyone then we'll move onward.

Hamish

My next thought on games… (perhaps more practical than the previous one, and also more likely to attract mainstream players)

===== Colonization =====

The year is 2101. Europe has been at war for 200 years and nothing has changed… except technology: Every player has invented space travel.

Each player may now attempt to either play like normal (on a standard 7-player map) or, send a unit out to colonize one of two planets (moons?). The planets can either be pre-drawn and known to all, or hidden discovery.

Each player has 3 spaceports, one in each of his home centers (Russia-4). An army (not fleet) may order to colonize… (coloninze planet alpha or colonize planet beta)… in which case it would then go up into space, and land on one of the planets. The planets would have around 15 sc each. The player would choose their intended landing space (must be a city)… conflicting landings will bounce and result in a failed trip (no movement). If landed successfully, they can capture the sc in the fall. Then use that sc to build… either back on earth, or, in their spaceports on one of the planets.

Additional spaceports may be built by ordering an army to build a port in a captured supply center. That port then becomes a home center / space port, allowing the player to build on the moons if they so desire. Any unit in a space port may order back into space, either back to earth (again, choosing where to land – must be a city). If an enemy city, the enemy must approve it. If neutral, the neutral residents don’t mind you landing there. If your own, obviously ok.

To win: Capture 18 sc on Earth… or… fully colonize both moons. (i.e. capture 8 sc on both of them).

Some caveats:
The decision to stay on earth or travel abroad would be paramount. The first person to lay claim to a moon could get established there and have access to a swathe of uncontested neutral centers, which may be used to build at home. However sending units off in the first turn means you aren’t capturing neutrals on earth, and are sacrificing position there.

My initial take on balance is that the game would favor England and Italy, for they could send a traditionally useless first year army to colonize with little recourse… thereby ensuring them 2 builds instead of the usual 1 build. Central nations like Germany and Austria would be hard pressed to spare a unit away from defense so early.

Thoughts?

Colonization - test_gm   (Sep 13, 2007, 12:00 am)
Hi Mike,

I'm going to admit no strong feeling with regard to the variant's subject. Additionally, I always find it difficult to comment on variants until I see them play-tested. Strange little quirks often come out that often take people by surprise. The one thing that would turn me off this variant would be the 34 (Earth) + 15 (Planet A) + 15 (Planet B) = 64 SC total which definitely puts it in the 'Behemoth' category as far as I'm concerned. I don't like large games. I do note that your victory proposals do seem manageable though, which is a great plus point, and as the actual victory requirements is either just 18 or just 16 then this leaves the game potentially very open and probably quite free-wheeling in the early stages. Good stuff. A very positive thing is that by adding an off-world dimension sure makes the traditional stalemate lines obsolete. [u:5cd7dd8f86]I think.[/u:5cd7dd8f86] Conversly, it could mean that given the number of potential SCs and therefore increasing unit density as the game progresses together with the small number of SCs required for victory that there could be a danger of multiple stalemate lines forming quite quickly. That's what I mean about the need for play-testing.

The only other thing that occurs regarding the variant is - why?

Cheers,

Paolo.

Aegean & Pericles tomorrow! - test_gm   (Sep 13, 2007, 12:00 am)
Stay tuned for the Greek-fest tomorrow as both Pericles and Aegean are due at 10am Pacific! I am missing some moves from both games. As a bonus, the first 3 players (in both games) to get orders in on time will get a bonus* unit to place wherever they want!

Enjoy,
-mike

* Bonus units may not be used in CA, NV, PA, NJ, states west of the Atlantic, or countries that begin with a letter of the alphabet. Bonus units must be placed immediately upon receipt, and before the next deadline. Players will take delivery of bonus units after the next deadline. At that time any player still in retention of an unapplied bonus unit will be subject to bonus units being removed from play. If a bonus unit is removed from play that never entered play, the subject player will be required to hold his bonus unit on his head for the remainder of the game. Bonus units, once placed, cannot move, support, convoy, or claim centers. Additionally the existence of a bonus unit in any territory will not affect the movement of other units into or out of said territories, cut supports, or dislodge units. Bonus units are considered otherwise identical to normal units, except for the above features, and their invisible nature when placed on the map.

Star Trek - test_gm   (Sep 13, 2007, 12:00 am)
Space, the final frontier...

This is the continuing story of Diplomacy variants based on the Star Trek universe.

This approach includes the main races as brought forth in ST: TNG, ST: DS9, and ST: Voyager; those being the Borg, Cardassians, Ferengi, Klingons, Romulans, the Dominion, and of course the United Federation of Planets.

The variant uses only fleets, no armies, and therefore no convoys, but it should be pretty fast paced. The map of the galaxy was simplified and rescaled a bit so the major powers are close enough to go at it PDQ. The only special rule is Borg assimilation, which allows only the Borg to build in any vacant SC they own, everyone else builds only in their home centers, a-la standard Dip. The Bajoran wormhole is also represented which simply makes the Bajor province adjacent to the Idran province in Dominion space and vice-versa.

The files for RealWorld are available at my site: The Diplomacy Tribune

I'd like to run a game as set-up, but I also think a fog-of-war (hidden movement) game would be very interesting.
BW map with province abbreviations.

Playing with this I had some ideas for a grander version that would be larger and have more special rules - so you might think of this one as Star Trek lite.

Spring 2001 Results - test_gm   (Sep 13, 2007, 12:00 am)
A lot of bouncing going on in the oceans around the world... everyone's either feeling it out or pretending to attack? Lots of headway made over land though... very interesting.

One quick note, especially for those of you on the edge of the map... any time a unit moves into a sea that rolls over the edge I'll move that unit to the other side, just so there are no surprises. Then, on the side the unit came from I'll add in a colored arrow to denote that there's a unit there (see Pacific Ocean)

Aegean - s02 results! - test_gm   (Sep 13, 2007, 12:00 am)
Surprisingly not a single unit is dislodged…

Bets are now being taken on whether the Boeotians or the Persians will be first out… the Macedonian Market is hedging on the easterners while the Peloponnesus 500 Index puts the demise of the Boeotians as a “sure bet”… perhaps a visit to the fates is in order before laying down your drachmas.

Unknown - test_gm   (Sep 13, 2007, 12:00 am)
I propse another race be added in the middle of the delta and gamma quadrants to average out the dominian and borg supremacy: Species 8472. I think without some sort of other power in the Northern Hemispheres either the Borg or the Dominan are going to run away with this game.

On a side note it looks like a very interesting variant and I would sign up for it if I were not running so many other games at the same time.

Thank you

<With apologies to the memory of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle>

It was a particularly rainy night when Dr. Watson stepped through the front door, doffing his rainy over-coat and heading straight for the study. There he found the fire already crackling, its warmth suffusing through the room, and his friend Sherlock Holmes already ensconced beside it in his arm-chair. Without looking up, the detective removed the pipe from his mouth.

"You are worried about the recent affairs in the Baltic, are you Watson?"

Watson paused mid-stride. "Holmes, you constantly amaze me. I was just about to ask you about this recent swirl of unpleasantness."

"It was elementary, my dear Watson. You have just come from your club, where you and the other members sit and discuss the recent news of the day. The recent military mobilizations are, of course, the front page news in the Times today and would be the main topic of discussion. And since you did not even stop by the kitchen for your usual cup of tea before coming here from the front door, I know that you wish to discuss something with me... What you have heard at the club has obviously worried you. And with the emminent Mary Watson is currently visiting cousins in the Scandinavias, it is not too far of a stretch to understand the cause of that worry."

His friend gathered himself in his own arm-chair and began stuffing his pipe. "Still, Holmes, it is a wonder. But, you are correct - war is about to break out in the Baltic and my wife is there travelling. What do you know of this Baltic affair?"

Holmes leaned forward.. "Well, the signs point to four nations mobilizing for war. I'm sorry Watson, but this looks to be quite the messy affair..."

Apologies to you guys for getting this out a day late - purely the GM's fault and I regret the work pressures that caused it. However, the action from the first turn looks extremely promising - although it might be a little hot for Finland. Then again though, is any power's back-door truly safe?

No retreats needed - we move onto Fall 1901. Deadline will be set for Thursday, June 19th (11:59 PM GMT). Please just let me know if you see any errors in the adjudication.

Cheers!

Haven't done a thorough checking of it, but it looks correct... that really is interesting. Would never have thought of doing anything like that. Good work!
