But if we miss our moves, we'd better blame it on the train, 'cuz the bus is already there...ok, this should probably end now.

Wow is it Monday already? You know, I wish it were Sunday. That's my fun day. My I don't have to run day. Sometimes it seems like it's just another manic Monday...
In any case, moves are due at 3pm today! That is in precisely 7 hours from now. Most are in, but I think a couple have yet to make their way to my inbox.

The stage is set, all tied up... in the quest to lead the Kingdom of Hearts... when from afar we hear the [BOOM] of canon fire! The Barbarian armada sends several rounds raining down on the Archer camp, while the thugs tear off their competition jerseys and club their way into the KOH.
It's conflict everywhere!
The Nomads get plowed in the south by a combined Ogre-Elf-Samurai eviction. Area declared a "no-roaming zone". Bounces occur in several provinces, leaving the critical build spots of Myth Drannor and Dargaard Keep unclaimed... and man the Magicians. Not only bounced from where they sought, but lose two home centers in one bang. On a bright note, some nations manage rather peaceful and plentiful epansion. 4 nations pull off the first turn hat trick and build 3.
There is one retreat! But Centaur F Cathal can only go to Anvard, so I just moved it there. Our Centaur leader may opt to take that OTB and build something else instead.

Hey folks, today is the big Fall 01 day!
Tho the question is... which Civ is it that's going to take the big fall of 01...
Many people have sent in prelims. Only a few have not - So please do not get in the habbit of turning nothing in till the last day! You can always change them throughout the turn. When revising orders, be sure to turn in a complete new set. i.e. when you turn in a new set, I delete the old, so don't just turn in the changes or you'd be missing the rest of your orders.

dc354 s01 results - and a competition! - FuzzyLogic (Jan 06, 2011, 3:28 pm) |
Forces mobilize all across the world... but for all the action, we have but one... single... bounce... as the Barbarians and Archers sit down to politely discuss who would make a better ruler for the Kingdom of Hearts. It is DECIDED! A competition shall ensue.
FIRST. The two shall face off in a battle of nimbleness... first running thru a tangled mesh of vines... then swinging from tree to tree... and last firing an arrow, mid-flight to split an apple off the other's head.
SECOND... A battle of might... where they will first trudge across a waiste-high muddy swamp... then topple the tallest tree with but a single blow... and last, hurl the heaviest boulder at the largest dragon with the hottest breath in the darkest sky...
Phew. All tied up... One more competition... who will win? Find out... Next Wednesday! 3pm Central / 8pm GMT.
Enjoy!

dc354 - New Year - FuzzyLogic (Dec 31, 2010, 10:18 pm) |
Hey all,
Your Civs have their New Years resolutions ready to go? “I will not club other races on the head”… “I will refrain from fluttering about in creatures ears”… “I will always turn in prelims”…
That last one is my recommendation. It’s never too early to turn in prelims!
“What’s a prelim?” You may ask…
Well… a pre-lim is not what comes before a post-lim. Rather, it’s the orders you turn in, before you know what you really want to order, just to have something turned in! It’s your first instinct on what to order… so that later, when you get called away on last minute business, or you stub your toe and have to go to the hospital, or your dog eats your computer… or aliens land in your back yard, abduct your cat, and you run off on a whirlwind quest to galaxies far far away to rescue him from the evil Vogons… then before you know it, the deadline passes and your units all hold – but NO… you turned in prelims! You’re covered. Woohoo! Two thumbs WAY up! So you can heal your toe, extract your computer, rescue your cat, and save the galaxy, knowing all the time you’ve got a backup turned in.
Yeah.
Anyways.
You get the idea.
About half of you have turned in at least something. Everyone should!
Enjoy!
And may all your races prosper in the new year…

Ok folks here we go!
The only race not requested by anyone... was... The Magicians. Who go to one of the lucky "give me what's left" players.
Of which, there were only two!
The other unpopular ones were the Barbarians and Undead, which only made one list each.
The most requested? Well the Dwarves are no surprise, but we had a tie... with the Leprechauns! I found that interesting. Those two made 8 lists, including being the first choice on 4. The Ogres and Dwarves were tied for the most popular 1st pick, being the first pick for 3 people each.
All the rest not noted above made 4, 5, or 6 lists, so pretty balanced for the rest of them.
Now on to our lineup! It wasn't easy, but everyone got one of their top 3 picks. 9 got their top 1. 3 got their 2nd. 5 got their 3rd. 2 had no pref.

A good guess, but no. The Elves, along w the Leprechauns, are by far the worst performers in Haven history. Rounding out a performance score of 0 (zero!) they have never even survived to the end, getting eliminated in all three games to date:

Each player should (ok, must - but I just hate laying down the law like that!) turn in a set of prefs, even if your preference is "I'd rather leave my future civilization which I will henceforth lead from infancy to world domination in the hands of the fates"... you should still turn something in.

You can use the first letter of the civ name, each one starts with something different... like A E I O U... if your pref is to play the Archers, Elves, Ogres, Undead... or if you just have a liking for vowels. Note that would only be 4, not 5, since I is invalid, and I'd have to write you back a nasty letter requesting you pick a 5th one, thereby expanding your horizons beyond those of just vowels.

Oh, ok. I must have dreamed that part about the Ogres using Devils Canyon to attack the Knights. God, I need a life outside Dip.

Wow... a 'shout-out' slam before the game even starts! That's a first for me. I feel .... honored???
Hi all,
I'm Mike Hoffman. I've been playing Dip for roughly 30 years, but at this stage, who counts anymore. Started out FtF, then to mail, then to the Judges when the Internet was finally built.
Some have said I play with a split-personality, but I'm on good drugs now, so hopefully the voices in my head will stay quiet (PARTY TIME!!!! WOO HOO!!!!)
I am in now way anywhere nearly as devious and conniving as Garry paints me. (HA!) I am a truly loyal ally (To
Yourself!) who rarely, if ever, stabs anyone (Rarely ... in reference to maybe geologic time!).
I hold no pre-conceived notions about players or the races represented in this map (Dwarves Smell!), and I've played in all 3 games so far. By far, my favorite map to play. So many twists and turns, alliances are so important (and variable), and the secrets of the board reveal themselves as you play (Like I'm going to divulge any to you guys now. Good Luck!).
Looking forward to seeing how the new rules will change the game play. I can assure you one thing: I will not be playing Ogres again --- unless Sims has it out for me.

I apologize in advance. My dealings with several of you will be by needs brief given that we will unlikely have anything to discuss early on if we are not in the same hemisphere. Consider me officially on the intro bandwagon.
Nathan Deily - first introduced to Diplomacy about 15 years ago in high school. Quite a lot of ftf and even light variant play at that time, and then got into pbem in college on CAT-23 and other places.
I was very excited to join Diplomaticcorp a few years ago and have played there fairly actively (in
addition to some other new groups I have had the pleasure of being exposed to), very often because it affords the opportunity to try new variants and stretch my brain in new ways I can bring back to Classic.
I agreed to take over an ailing Hobbit position in the "Slaughter at Story Time" run of Haven and was rewarded with a long, slow, painful death in that game. Suffice it to say I'm looking to try my hand in a different corner of the board this time (or at least make my own bed before I have to lie in it).
Winter Blitz is the only tournament I've ever had the pleasure of playing in (2nd time in a row this past year, and very excited for my third run at it). Managed to get a 2-way draw in the first round but then got shellacked in the 2nd round... hope to see you all there as well.
One question for Mike - I gather this is not the "Fog of War" version of Haven, but just in case it is... can you confirm? That does have several important implicaitons. I seem to remember that "Slaughter" wasn't.
Nathan

Subject: Re: DC354: Can the Elven King of Old Return? It WAS Foretold...
Wow... a 'shout-out' slam before the game even starts!
(HA!) I am a truly loyal ally (To Yourself!) who rarely, if ever, stabs anyone (Rarely ... in reference to maybe geologic time!).
Mike Hoffman

Halloo to all and well met. I know several of you (and have had the pleasure of being stabbed by you) and others I am just prepping to get used by. I have had the pleasure of several things:
1. Playing in WB before
2. Helping run WB before (as I will be again)
3. Playing on the site for a while
4. Racking up an impressive list of eliminations
5. GMing a Haven game before
6. Playing a Haven game before....
which brings us to the Elven King. It was foretold that the Elven King sailed away to Middle-Earth (escaping Ogre tyranny in Haven) and would someday return to take his vengeance. Mayhap now is that time? (I was the ill-fated, much hated, under-rated Elves in DC224).
I apologize in advance. My dealings with several of you will be by needs brief given that we will unlikely have anything to discuss early on if we are not in the same hemisphere. It doesn't mean that I wouldn't LOVE having you as a mid-game ally if I can survive Mike Hoffman that long.

Consider me officially on the intro bandwagon.
Nathan Deily - first introduced to Diplomacy about 15 years ago in high school. Quite a lot of ftf and even light variant play at that time, and then got into pbem in college on CAT-23 and other places.
I was very excited to join Diplomaticcorp a few years ago and have played there fairly actively (in addition to some other new groups I have had the pleasure of being exposed to), very often because it affords the opportunity to try new variants and stretch my brain in new ways I can bring back to Classic.
Nathan

Somehow that doesn't seem too common a request - but in this game you never know! Here is our final 19. Since we have a little time to kill, we can sit here and twiddle our thumbs, or we can bake some Haven Holiday treats, or we can turn in some preferences!
So I'm going to go w option 3. I don't in most games, but in this one so many have already voiced an opinion on what they'd like to play that I'll open it up to prefs. Each player should (ok, must - but I just hate laying down the law like that!) turn in a set of prefs, even if your preference is "I'd rather leave my future civilization which I will henceforth lead from infancy to world domination in the hands of the fates"... you should still turn something in.
If you would like your preferences to be more particular than that, you should turn in a list of at least 5.
There's a lot of eager energy here, do you want me to assign powers and send out the player list pre-Christmas? I can do that if y'all want. First deadline still wouldn't be till Jan. I would only do this if everyone confirms they're ok w this and wouldn't be put out or left behind.
Note - some of you I know well, others are completely new. So intros are welcome too! Feel free to copy the group. Heck it'll pass the time. Like you know what I do in my spare time? I build w LEGOs. No - really. Some pretty big scale stuff.
Enjoy!
-mike
