DC140 "Never Ending Story" fall 1902 res... - test_gm   (Sep 13, 2007, 12:00 am)
First things first, I apologize for running a bit behind, as we have hit a particularly busy season at work. At least the legislature won't be back in session for a few weeks...

Both of our early leaders find themselves on the losing end of an engagement this turn, as England knocks Germany out of Denmark, and the combined efforts of Italy and Turkey push the Austrian fleet out of Greece. The Archduke can't complain too much, however, as he gains Venice to offset the loss of Greece and also hangs on to Bulgaria. England gains control of previously neutral Sweden. France convoys to Wales and moves into Piedmont, Russia moves an army to Livonia, and Turkey occupies Armenia.

Both dislodged units have only one valid retreat:
The German F Denmark can retreat to Helgoland Bight or OTB.
The Austrian F Greece can retreat to Albania or OTB.

Both the Autumn 1902 retreat and Winter 1902 adjustments will be due Tuesday 1/22 at 3pm Central (US). Only the following countries have pending adjustments:

Austria build 1 (or build 2 if retreating OTB)
England build 2
Germany remove 1 (no change if retreating OTB)
Turkey remove 1

Thanks, everyone!

DC140 "Never Ending Story" winter 1904 r... - test_gm   (Sep 13, 2007, 12:00 am)
A mix of armies and fleets joins the fray, with Russia's timely build in Moscow potentially saving Sevastopol from a Turkish invasion. Meanwhile, Germany vacates the recently captured Vienna.

Spring 1905 orders will be due next Tuesday 3/11 at 3pm Central Daylight Time (US). The US and Canada switch to daylight time this weekend, so for those of you located elsewhere, that may change the deadline by an hour in your local time.

DC140 "Never Ending Story" fall 1904 res... - test_gm   (Sep 13, 2007, 12:00 am)
The vultures set upon Austria quickly, as 3 different powers swoop in to grab Austrian-controlled centers. Germany succeeds in hanging on to Munich, but is not able to regain control of Kiel and Belgium. England defends London as well. The big winner is Italy, who gains both Trieste and Greece while retaining control of Bulgaria.

No retreats are due, so we move directly to the winter 1904 adjustment phase, for which orders will be due Tuesday 3/4 at 3pm Central (US).

England - build 1
Germany - remove 1
Italy - build 2
Russia - build 1

DC140 "Never Ending Story" 22-hour remin... - test_gm   (Sep 13, 2007, 12:00 am)
Don't forget, fall 1904 orders are due in 22 hours, at 3pm Central (US). I am missing orders from at least one player, so please send them in!

Also, I want to extend well-wishes to our departed Archduke Andy, who has encountered a real-life situation that has taken him away from Diplomacy for the time being.

First of all, I held off sending the adjudication an extra day in case the Archduke returned. However, it appears he made a trip to Sarajevo 10 years earlier than in real life...

With a second consecutive NMR, Austria plunges into Civil Disorder. All Austrian units will be ordered to Hold from this season forward, and if any Austrian units are dislodged, they will be automatically disbanded -- as you will see below.

Germany comes under heavy attack, and finds that two of his units have been dislodged. England sails unopposed into Belgium and also provides a support for Russia's march into Kiel. France moves into Tyrolia and also gains the English Channel. Turkey and Italy trade Balkan provinces, and a Turkish fleet makes its way into Albania. Russia moves an army into Ukraine, possibly just in time to counter the Turkish move to Armenia.

Austria's dislodged F Albania is automatically disbanded. Germany has two retreats due; since each of the dislodged units has only one valid retreat, I'll take the liberty of ordering them: F Kiel - Holland and A Tyrolia - Bohemia. Nick, if you wish to retreat OTB instead, please let me know right away.

The fall 1904 deadline will be next Thursday 2/28 at 3pm Central (US).

Cory

P.S. With my busy season at work now over, I won't be around on weekends again for a while. Hurray!

DC140 "Never Ending Story" 6-hour warnin... - test_gm   (Sep 13, 2007, 12:00 am)
Hello, everyone! As I suspected, I did not have time to send my customary 24-hour reminder yesterday. Now that I have time to catch up, I can at least send out a 6-hour reminder. Although I have received orders from most players, I am missing at least one set of orders. Thanks!

DC140 "Never Ending Story" 6-hour remind... - test_gm   (Sep 13, 2007, 12:00 am)
The winter 1903 deadline arrives in about 6 hours, and I am still missing adjustment orders from at least one player. I'll offer a reminder of what happens in the case of No Build Received (NBR), a term I also apply if your missing order is a removal.

If you have a build due and suffer an NBR, your build is waived. That doesn't mean it's gone forever, but you would have to wait until winter 1904 to use your build, assuming you are still entitled to it.

If you have a removal due but go NBR, I will automatically remove the unit farthest from home -- I'll use England as an example, since it has units farther from home than Germany or Austria. England has 4 units in spaces adjacent to a home center, a unit in Denmark 2 spaces away from the nearest home center, and a unit in Sweden 3 spaces away. He must remove one unit this turn, but if he fails to submit orders, I would disband the army in Sweden.

Thanks, everyone!

Cory

DC140 "Never Ending Story" fall 1903 res... - test_gm   (Sep 13, 2007, 12:00 am)
Sorry for the long delay, I was having e-mail problems yesterday, so I decided to wait till today and see if the Archduke's orders were hung up. Unfortunately, no such orders arrived today, so Austria suffers an NMR. Andy, are you still out there?

Italy, France, and Turkey all take shots at the missing Archduke, Italy gaining Venice and Turkey taking Greece. Russia walks unopposed into Berlin, and France sails into an undefended Liverpool. England does successfully defend Denmark against a German attack. Austria's army in Rumania comes under fire from two directions, but the attacks by Russia and Turkey are not coordinated, so the unordered defender successfully holds his position.

Austria has two retreats due, and each unit has only one valid retreat. In the interests of keeping the game moving, I will take the liberty of ordering the Austrian retreats:
F Greece - Albania
A Venice - Tuscany

Andy, if you wish to disband both of these units instead, please let me know, as that would entitle you to rebuild 1 unit.

Everyone gets to participate in the winter 1903 adjustments, as follows:
Austria: Remove 1 (changes to Build 1 if the Archduke changes both his retreats to OTB)
England: Remove 1
France: Build 2
Germany: Remove 1
Italy: Build 1
Russia: Build 1
Turkey: Build 1

Because of that e-mail glitch, I'm running a day behind. In order to get back on track, I'll set the winter 1903 deadline for Friday 2/15 at 3pm Central (US). Thanks for your patience, everyone.

For those of you who have submitted orders marked as final, in response to the effort to accelerate the current turn, thank you. I have not received orders from at least one player, so at this point, I can't yet adjudicate. I am prepared to run the turn as soon as I have received a full complement of orders. Thanks, everyone!

DC140 "Never Ending Story" fall 1903 dea... - test_gm   (Sep 13, 2007, 12:00 am)
I have had a player inquire about accelerating the current turn, so that we don't have to wait over a week to resolve the fall 1903 season. I set the deadline that late because I'm not sure who has e-mail access on weekends -- normally, I don't myself, but I'll be working weekends through mid-February. I don't want to advance an already announced deadline, but I do have a way to speed up this turn if all players choose to do so:

If everyone submits moves to me that are listed as "final", once I receive a set of final orders from all players, I will run the turn, regardless of what day that might be. For instance, if all players send me final orders by Friday 2/8, I'll send the adjudication that day and I can then set the fall 1903 retreat (if necessary) and winter 1903 adjustment deadline for Tuesday 2/12, and we will have saved at least 2 days.

For those interested in a faster-paced turn, and without springing a nasty surprise on any player who might need extra time, I hope you find this to be a reasonable strategy.

DC140 "Never Ending Story" spring 1903 a... - test_gm   (Sep 13, 2007, 12:00 am)
Sorry for the long delay, your humble GM had a nasty run-in with the stomach flu and actually spent a few hours at the hospital in the early hours of Tuesday.

Lots of action this year, as Italy and Turkey combine forces against Austria, but will it just mean that A/I trade Greece and Bulgaria? France and Italy offer support for a German attack on Venice, but the Germany army in Tyrolia instead is ordered to Vienna! England's defense against France not only prevents another army from being convoyed there, but also drives out the French army already on Britain. Russia pushes all-out toward Berlin, leaving the Tsar well-positioned for the fall.

Both dislodged units, the French army in Wales and the Austrian army in Bulgaria, had no valid retreats and were forcibly disbanded. Since there are no retreat orders to be issued, we can proceed directly to fall 1903. Because I was not able to send out the adjudication before the weekend, I'll give everyone a bit of extra time and set the fall 1903 deadline for Tuesday 2/12 at 3pm Central (US).

dc140 (re001) game start! - test_gm   (Sep 13, 2007, 12:00 am)
I am pleased to announce the start of our game, which will now be numbered dc140. This game will be named "The Never Ending Story," a little commentary about my current work environment. (Kevin, if you're out there, they're coming back again next week!) The player roster and country assignments appear at the end of this message. Martin, I hope you are able to join another game soon, a fresh re001 should be coming very soon.

Please indicate the game number, your country, the season of play, and a version number for your orders in any e-mails to me: e.g. "dc140 England spring 1901 orders, v1". I am involved in two other games, so as you might expect, I have lots of Dip-related e-mail traffic -- the header allows me to use mail filters so that I don't lose anything, or inadvertently mix up your orders with those I saw in another game. If you have any questions of a technical nature that are not addressed in the official Diplomacy rules or my House Rules, I'll do my best to answer those. However, I can't address strategy or divulge any information about another player's orders/plans (or lack thereof).

Also, don't forget to subscribe to the dc140 forum on the group website. I will send all my notices to everyone's individual e-mail addresses as well, but it doesn't hurt to have a backup. On that theme, I maintain a secondary e-mail address, coryfucius(at)gmail.com (coryfucius(at)gmail.com), to ensure that the game isn't hindered by any problems that periodically arise with Yahoo mail. Please feel free to send e-mails to both of my addresses; I would rather receive 2 copies of a message than take the chance of the only copy getting lost.

I encourage each of you to introduce yourselves to the rest of the players. My name is Cory Burris, and I have been involved in Diplomacy for nearly 2 years. This is my second time serving as a GM with the DC club. In real life, I work as a budget analyst for a large US state, am married, and have one child.

About 24 hours before each deadline, I will do my best to send out a reminder notice. But this is not a promise, and the deadline won't be delayed if I am unable to send a reminder, meeting the deadline is your responsibility. With each adjudication, I will include both a .gif file and a Realpolitik .dpy file. If you don't have RP yet, I highly recommend it -- the club website has a link to this program. The adjudication text, .gif file, and current player stats can also be found on the club website.

Our first deadline, for the spring 1901 orders, will be Thursday 12/13 at 3pm Central (US). I strongly encourage preliminary orders, especially on the first turn. With the holidays approaching, I would like to get in a full game year before vacation schedules slow us down.

Thanks for playing, everyone!
