BUILDS due Thursday, tho I will post any time I have a full set.

Tho I may or may not state this in the future, any retreat or build phase can be released early, unless you specifically mark orders prelim or ask me to hold till the deadline. This is just to keep the game moving on these minor turns.

You will NOT get a new map for Winter – 2 maps per year: Spring and Fall. I’ll tell you what you build, and if you see any other units pop up, I’ll tell you that too, tho no new map will be forthcoming.

Enjoy!

Once Within: New Archers! - test_gm   (Sep 13, 2007, 12:00 am)
"Any NMR in the first year and I’ll replace"

I really didnt envision having to use this, but welcome to the game Jason L leading the Archers!
githraine(at)yahoo.com (githraine(at)yahoo.com)

(Note, dont confuse with Jason B of the Knights!)

Results will STILL be out tonight!

I have moves from all, and it's just a matter of time when I can get to the game, likely around 8pm when the kids are off to bed. So you're welcome to change up until then! Hard cutoff: 8pm Pacific today for any last minute revisions.

Enjoy,

How would I handle NMR’s?

If you’ve either played in one of my games or read my house rules (www.sims-family.net/dip/houserules.htm) you’d already know! Expect results to go out same day of a deadline, come rain or shine… or fog. Any NMR in the first year and I’ll replace, after that, it’s most likely just an NMR but handled case by case. Given the players in this game, I don’t envision NMR’s will be a problem at all.

********************************************
What are the red arrows?

So that Rolf’s trolls may have a home, we can call them bridges! Even tho they’re not technically, they just mean the two spaces they point to are connected for direct movement (or support).

********************************************
How many SC are needed to win?

52. A full deck.
There are a total of 102 supply centers.

********************************************
Where are the space names from?

The names are taken from over 75 fantasy books, movies, shows, games, songs, places, mythologies, fairytales, folklore, and a few of them completely made up. The more you can relate to, the more you were probly a geek growing up!

Once Within: Fear the Wizard's Cat - test_gm   (Sep 13, 2007, 12:00 am)
Last night across the north of the imaginary country of England, an earthquake struck (5.3 Richter), shortly before 1 am GMT (or the far better midnight, portuguese time).

I and my wife were awoken. I naturally claimed it as an earthquake, but my wife, far more astute than I, pointed out the real reason: I must have forgotten to put the cat out, and the way in which the bed bounced was therefore the cat jumping on to and off the bed.

Even then BBC (Barbarian Broadcasting Cabal) were deceived.

Now that I know the truth, I shall bend all my endeavours to harnassing this mighty power: where ever you may be hiding in the fog, fear my cat, the mighty Jet (he's jet black)

You should have your s01 results and map!

You may have discovered a new type of supply center… the Eternal Build centers. Standard centers are the typical Circle-Dot, and are normal supply centers. However there are a few Eternal Build centers, marked by a larger symbol, a square with a plus thru it. These centers may be built in by any player, any time! (provided it’s vacant, under your control, etc)

Once Within & AAWF - test_gm   (Sep 13, 2007, 12:00 am)
To the players of Once Within and Ancient Art…

It has been brought to my attention that your Leprechaun (dc15Cool and Space Quest (dc122) player has been burdened with an unfortunate part of real life, and has not had the time to put into either game (I’ll defer any personal specifics to him). He’s said that moves will be in for both games appropriately, but any lack of diplomacy from him should not be taken in a negative way. Best wishes, Mike…

Expect AAWF on Thu, and Once Within on Fri as planned.

These are either a lighthouse or a watchtower! (hopefully you can tell
which it is – tho they are functionally equivalent, I just put watchtowers
if inland, or lighthouses if coastal). It watches over the two spaces next
to it, and keeps them lit up on every map you receive. This makes it harder
to sneak up on these key cities. If it's unclear, feel free to ask. This
is a new feature for FOW IV, after having seen some brutal surprise stabs in
games past.

If your lighthouse or watchtower is captured, it does NOT operate for enemy
occupiers but will stop working for you. If you can liberate the city, it
would resume operation.

Once Within: Roster - Black Knight seeks leg to s... - test_gm   (Sep 13, 2007, 12:00 am)
Mike,

Great game - really. Fab!

However, there are two errors I note already that cause me to thinks that we will have to start over. (Shouldn't that be "I thinks"Wink

First and most obvious, seriously - you made the Rogues color pink? Shouldn't that have been the Faeries? Faeries, pink...get it? Anyone? ....No offense to Robert, King of the Faeries, of course.

Second and more important, you will all note that I am the Knights. The Knights are of course, black. So thereforethwith, I am a Black Knight.
So, logically, according to Monty Python and the Holy Grail (which certainly applies in this Fog of War game) I quote: "the Black Knight always triumphs!"

Therefore, before we have started, I have already won. Whooopieee!

Of course, I am sure someone who likes to wreck a good story with the truth will remind the other players I might be missing an arm, or leg or two after a tussel with King Arthur - but it is really just a flesh wound!!!

And now for STRATEGERY - will the fine Band of Brothers that can see Aslan province, please drop me a private line? We should chat....I have this plan involving a large wooden rabbit.....

Jason

Once Within: Abilities - test_gm   (Sep 13, 2007, 12:00 am)
Abilities are all out!
Many have already asked, and it goes w/o saying if you have questions, let me know!

The abilities are all very experimental - they are designed to add some fun to the game, a little something to discover as you explore, and keep everyone in the dark (hehe) about what's going to happen next.

They are not intended to be game-breakers... and tho I have put a lot of thought into the wording, balance, etc, plus run them by numerous people and revised the wording on them about a thousand times, I am only human... and if I feel any power needs to be tweaked as the game progresses, I reserve the right to do so! Especially in the case of loopholes, paradoxes, or unclear wording that results in actions or problems I didnt envision being within the intent of the ability.

Other than that,
Enjoy!

Once Within: Maps out! - test_gm   (Sep 13, 2007, 12:00 am)
Greetings all,
By now you’ve each received a starting map. You see it’s not like most maps you get, it’s hand edited to blank out that which you cannot see…

You’ll get a new map each spring and fall, with only “move” updates for retreats and/or builds. Your map is your diplomatic tool to do with as you please! Trading maps is fair game, as is altering them. Since everyone asks, I use Paint Shop Pro 5 to do my editing.

Newbies: There are so many new to the FOW variant this time! Some things to consider…

Remember that once your map gets out there, then it’s out there and it can get passed around freely by others! As well, anyone can fake anything they want. Doctoring maps is perfectly legal.

************************************

Some notes about orders, in particular the “Hold” order:

Each adjudication, you’ll be told the results of your orders like normal. However you’ll also learn the orders of any unit that affects any unit of yours. You’ll also learn a lot more if you HOLD. If you hold, you’ll learn every order that affected every space adjacent to you. So consider the Hold order like an “Observe” order. The vets of this game will know that getting a centrally positioned unit and holding with it tends to learn a lot of information.

************************************

Lay of the land:

The Haven is laid out in a few continents that are all connected in unique ways. In the middle of the map are some lucrative neutral lands.

In general, the players are spread out around the edges. Somewhat. Wink

The world wraps around from east to west. So there are no safe corners. Some of you already see points where the world wraps.

Rivers can be traveled by fleet. If you see a river (many of you already do) then you can move a fleet along it. One space at a time of course, just like normal movement. The river just means that fleets can move along the river spaces, much like Kiel in the standard game.

************************************

Other Stuff:

I’m still refining some of the wording on the abilities / powers, so they’ll be out later this week.

Feel free to cc me on any negotiations! Early stuff in particular, I’m interested to know how players go about selecting their opening moves since that’s what I use to build future maps!

Prelims are highly recommended. Especially with this large of a map, it’s good when I have orders in on time since I typically set aside an evening to prep all the maps. When I get to the turn, I do enforce NMR’s – anyone who’s played in one of my games and missed a deadline probly knows this already.

First deadline: Friday Feb 22, 2pm Pacific

Questions? Ask!
Enjoy,
-mike

Once Within - PreGame - test_gm   (Sep 13, 2007, 12:00 am)
Once within a fog so dreary, embark a group to test their theory
O’er many a quaint and curious set of foggy maps galore
Begins this game of warful scrapping, alliances, and clever stabbing
Of unfortunate souls that are caught napping, mapping at the very core.
Tis a neighbor you’ll discover – attacking, he will try to score
A victory, and nothing more.

Welcome Dip friends to this 5th game in the increasingly inaccurately named Fog of War Trilogy!

Fog of War IV
Once Within a Fog so Dreary

Inspired by the original trio of 4 games, I’ve pushed the limits here with the 5th game in the series, a 19-player variant. The map is completely drawn from scratch, toiled over for the last few months by myself, Jerry, Trent, and Felix… and it is far and away the best FOW map ever.

For those unfamiliar with the Fog of War, it is a variant that has run for 4 consecutive years now in diplomaticcorp – every year getting more challenging.

A brief history:
**************************************************

Fog of War (www.diplomaticcorp.com?game_id=dc074) was run in 2005 with some great dc players. Standard map, but concealed movements. Dc74 ended in a 3-way draw between Steve, Derek, and Mikael.

FOW II: Return of the Fog (www.diplomaticcorp.com?game_id=dc096) was run in 2006. This time, the battles were taken to the shores of England, played on the Stonehenge IV map. Dc96 ended in a 4-way draw between Steve, Rob, Trent, and Mikael.

FOW III: Dark Side of the Fog was begun in 2007, and has not yet completed – going on 10 years of game time, 7 of the 10 starting players still remain. The game was played on my first ever home-drawn map, to be discovered as the players explored.

FOW III-I/II: Ancient Art of War in Fog was begun shortly after… There was so much interest in the 3rd FOW game that there were enough players to fill a 2nd board! So I tweaked a few problem spots on the map and a 2nd board was launched. Also still active (but down to 6 players), FOW III-I/II runs about 1 year behind FOW III.

Improvements:
**************************************************

All the rules implemented for the FOW III games will be in place for this and future games:

- Rivers are in play. They operate just like canals but can span many provinces.
- Bridges were cool, but there are no bridges in this map.
- Vision will remain like it was in FOW III – Armies on a coast can see inland or adjacent sea zones, but Fleets on a coast cannot see inland.
- Fonts are very crisp and clear.
- Units do not cover the names, and fit in the spaces better.
- Movement around this map is MUCH more fluid than in the FOW III series.
- Every power has a special ability or feature – more on that at the game start!

This is DIPLOMACY at heart, so it will not be gunboat in any way – open diploming. You don’t know where the players are, but you will know who is what power, and have their email address to talk it up.

Information:
**************************************************

General FOW info: www.dipwiki.com?title=Fog_of_War
FOW IV Icon set: www.diplomaticcorp.com/images/haven_icons.jpg

Surprises:
**************************************************

There are many surprises to be discovered along the way in this map – but if I told you any more, they wouldn’t be surprises!

Enjoy,
-mike
