Mark you have your GM's mixed up. And no I won't let you solo in the other game because there we have a game.

Info on this game is slightly skewed, but the victors write the history.

I thought this game contains all of the elements that makes Dip played remotely bad. No need to rehash the past; but stupid variant, I won't play it again, not that I was really playing it for the last month,

It's 2am and I can't sleep so I might as well get this sent out now and try in vain to get some sleep before the morning, so here we go.

I started off the game thinking it would end in a draw of some sort, due to the relatively large number of starting units, and the ability of these units to defend positions in depth.  I was proven wrong due to the inability of people (myself and Nick excluded) to understand the objective of the game.

For those of you who don't know, the objective of the game is to get a simple majority of supply centers.  As such, the objective of every player should be to attempt to secure these centers, and correspondingly, to stop people who are very clearly in position to solo from getting these centers.  I assumed, of course, that anyone who is dedicated to the game of diplomacy enough to play it over email over a span of several months would have this elementary understanding of how the game works down pat.

That said, Michael, I'd really appreciate your help soloing in DC 225.  I'm England in that game, and I'm reasonably close to soloing.  I figure since you helped England solo in this game that for the sake of consistency, you ought to help me solo in that game.  I'll even let you survive, because I don't need all of your centers to solo.  I'll be expecting to be supported into Munich in the fall, thanks in advance.

Nick summed up the gameplay rather accurately, except the refusal on my part to ally with him.  What he proposed was that I yield two of my remaining supply centers to him.  This was when he was around 22 or 23 centers, and I didn't really want him to solo, so I opted not to.  Little did I know that Germany and Turkey would fall all over themselves to help him solo.

To close, I'd like to thank Andy for running this game, and for running other games on this site as well.  You do good work, and I enjoy the variants that you are willing to run.  I'd also like to thank Jeff, Matthew, and Ilyas for taking over as replacement players as they, and others like them, allow games to run relatively smoothly when players opt out of the game.

[quote:4f3ff3a4a7] Hi all,

It is a pleasure to come out victorious of this bloody conflict. I want to say a few words to explain my vision of the game and perhaps explain my actions to some.
When the game started, I made a protection pact with Russia and tried to gain an alliance with France or Germany. The result was that I ended up the odd man out of the Franco-German alliance. France and I agreed as gentlemen to declare a war on each other the old fashion way... no backstabs. I then manoeuvred to obtain the support of Germany and Italy. Within about two turns France was only a shadow of its former self. He made peace with me and swore fealty in exchange for my protection. Meanwhile Germany and Russia had been waring, Austria was falling and Italy had attacked Turkey.
When Germany became too much of a threat I allied myself with Russia against him. At the same time Italy stroke Germany as well. As a result Germany lost much ground and appealed to find a protector. I responded and in much the same way France became my vassal, so did Germany. To protect my new vassal and use him as an advantage, we attacked Russia. I had also been talking Turkey into doing so which resulted in the fall of Russia rather quickly. But before Russia fell, Germany and Turkey betrayed me. Of course Italy was also facing Germany and Turkey but was not willing to ally with me a third time as I was always the one to rip the rewards. By that time however I had the strength to face my enemies alone.
Shortly before the end Turkey negotiated with me. Turkey was willing to kneel if I assured him that I would destroy Italy before my solo.
As a result only two players survived the game after my solo, Turkey and Germany.

I want to thank all of you for making the game so pleasant. It truely was a game of diplomacy.
I hope to play with you soon again.

Cheers,

Nick

Folks,
Thanks to all of you for getting your orders in well in advance of the deadline. Sorry this is coming out so late - I let my mind slip today.
According to the DipWiki, the solo victory criteria for this variant is 29 SCs, which England has not only achieved, but surpassed this year. Although RealPolitik doesn't seem to recognize this, I am going with the rules laid out for the variant, and calling this game and England solo.
Congratulations to Nick Cherrier for the win, and thank you all for playing. I'd especially like to thank Matt Kelly, Jeffrey Clay, and Ilyas Erzik for stepping in as replacements when we needed them so badly. Of course, Nick, Michael Stroz, and Mark Utterbach also deserve accolades for sticking with this game from beginning to end - thank you for staying true to the goals of the game and the community, gentlemen.
End of Game (EOG) statements would be appreciated, but I won't harass anyone who doesn't wish to provide one. I look forward to seeing you all in future games, whether I GM for you, you GM for me, or we face off across a board. Thanks again, everyone.
