Mori Motonari was the daimyo of Aki province, and a vassal to the
great Ouchi Yoshitaka. When Yoshitaka was betrayed and forced to
commit seppuku by an Ouchi retainer, Sue Harukata, Motonari attacked
and defeated Harukata's forces. Motonari then continued to
consolidate his control of the Ouchi provinces, continuing the
campaign against the Amago and Otomo clans, and eventually rising to
become one of the greatest rivals to Toyotomi Hideyoshi in his
campaign to unify Japan.
***TEAHOUSE COMMENTARY: The Mori clan was also known for possessing
one of the more powerful navies of any daimyo in the Sengoku era, and
our Motonari (Jim) seems to be similarly inclined. Mori builds an
additional fleet in Iwami, though his Chosokabe ally builds two,
keeping Mori in second place in the naval arms race. Shimazu
continues his attack on the Mori lands, abandoning his final holding
in Kyushu. Asakura strengthens his core holdings by building an army
in Settsu, while Oda disbands his southern front in favor of facing
Hojo, who has build two new fleets and an army of his own. Uesugi
lines new forces also along his border with Hojo, placing a fleet in
Mutsu and an army in Kozuke.
