PREV Spring 1909 Adjudication: NEXT

I am a liar. "I'll adjudicate tonight." I fear my credibility has sunk to John Edwards and Richard Nixon status. My apologies. This is not something I wish to make a habit of. Good GMs make trains run on time. Dammit. And besides, to stray from my post at this moment, this particular moment, when so much hangs in the scales... I will not allow this to happen again.

Each side compiles five *Flags* this round, and yet the fates of the two sides could not be more different. The non-Hamsters *Fail*. And *Fail* and *Fail* and *Fail* and *Fail*. If you were Mitt Romney, you'd keep a binder full of your failures. You are the Charlie Browns of Diplomacy.

The Were-Hamsters, on the other hand, display a veritable diversity of futility: they *Fail*. And *Cut*. And *Void*. And *Dislodge*. And even *Disband*. About the only tricks unturned are *No Convoy* and *Ordered to Move*. Oh, and *Bounce*.

At the mid-year, only two centers change sides. (Not included is Greece, which swaps from Wu Tang to Blurbia). Wu Tang retakes a piece of its Fatherland: Venice. The Hamsters back their way into Holland. If that were all I had to report, then the season would be a victory for the anti-Hamster coalition -- over time, a standstill in SC counts does not help solo bids.

But that is not all I have to report. At heart, I believe that Diplomacy games are won with naval power. And this season, two vital sea provinces fall into Hamster claws. In order to accommodate an ill-fated assault on Bulgaria, the Black Sea is left uncontested. This complicates the defense of the South. And on the other side of the map, Norwegian Were-Hamsters float into the North Sea. With Denmark vulnerable, with London undefended, and with pocket-gophers holed up in Holland... I fear the season belongs to those wily Hamster from the North.

There is but one retreat:
The Were-Hamsters of Ruhr retreat to Holland.

Fall 1909 will be due on Wednesday. For real, this time.
