Hi All,
A Deadline extension request has been submitted and granted, even at this last-minute. Your GM has a very busy schedule this weekend and won't be able to process moves anyway.

The new deadline for Fall 07 is MONDAY, 6/4 (at) 5PM MST!

Thanks,
Mike

Hi All,Many apologies. I had one request for a deadline extension. The request was for one day, but I am having LASIK surgery this afternoon, so I probably won't be back on a computer until late tomorrow at best. Hopefully all goes well and I can get the results processed tomorrow afternoon, otherwise they will have to wait until Friday. If things go badly (ugh!), then I'll have my wife process the moves and I'll look for a replacement GM.

One thing I can tell you is that All Draw Proposals FAILed.  A very early NO vote killed them off. So be prepared to keep playing!
Thanks for you patience and understanding.

I don't know about you guys but I find Mike's capitalization of the word "FAILed" suspicious... It might be a suggestion that a

Fairy
Archer
Indian
Leprechaun

alliance is secretly plotting... I for one will not tolerate someone just dropping Indians willy-nilly into the game at this point and I think it's a little politically insensitive to suggest it Wink

all kidding aside, hope the surgery goes well Mike. I've considered LASIK for years (my prescription is horride, -11 in one eye and -11.75 in the other) so I'll be asking you in a month or so how you like it Wink

Yes and what kind of surgery is done by Leprechauns, Archers, Samurai, Indians(?) and Knights anyways?  That would be a crazy operating room.

BTW everyone I've talked to that's had it has liked it.

Indians? Aren't they nomadic? And if so why am I unable to see those units on the board and order them around? Or is that the issue...I WAS ordering them around and managed to do so soooo effectively that I led them to extinction too? Garry,
Indians are experts at stealth, which is why you never see them. Have you not wondered why we had so many Map failures this go-round, after so many successful runs of Haven? It was not due to GM or player error, the Indians captured the armies involved. I've been trying hard to stay ahead of them, but they are fairly successful at hiding from me as well.

I don't know about you guys but I find Mike's capitalization of the word "FAILed" suspicious... It might be a suggestion that a

alliance is secretly plotting...

Hi All,
Many apologies.

Howdy Gents,  Not too much to say in this one - things got off to a slow start as I tried to negotiate with France and Germany and pick an ally (or more precisely, an enemy). Negotiations with Russia were difficult, and I got the sense early on that there was at the very least a strong R/T.  I have to admit I did encourage Maslow towards an Austrian alliance and sending his army further into the center - had I known Austria as part of a RAT I certainly never would have done so.  Germany played well, and I admire his tenacity... things got even slower as Russia relentlessly built fleets and stymied my forward progress. Having been Austria in a similar situation, I was
expecting the stab a bit sooner - a very well played and timed event.  Joe was a good and reliable partner, and we just didn't have the juice to slow the RAT once Italy crumbled and flipped. So be it. I would have liked to do better in the tournament this year, but that's the way it goes, I guess. Congrats to John.  N

Everyone,
Well, what can I say?  I went 4:3:1:1:1...... until the fatal blow.  So, what is there to talk about?  This game was awful.
Just kidding.  I had a blast this game.  The first two years were pretty typical, and I 100% agree with John that we were lying to each other and just hoping Nick would take our side.  Unfortunately, I got shafted.  But, in fact, that's where the game was fun.  As soon as I got stabbed, I had to decide between fighting to the death or trying to weasel my way into their alliance, and obviously my decision was to work with them.  While I argued my fleets could be a forward command, I think I ultimately convinced them by agreeing to advise tactical movements, which I did for the first year or two, until John took over and I only gave a few recommendations (mostly to show him I was reading the e-mails, because it
seemed as though everyone else was passively accepting his ideas).

Of course, I'm not anyone's pawn, and I wasn't just laying down easy.  Originally I wanted to be a mole for EF, but they wanted me to betray them immediately, which I refused to do.  Then John/Nick manipulated my position such that stabbing them was basically impossible, and finally I ended up in the Atlantic with no way whatsoever to create problems for them.  When I took Brest, they took Naples, which denied me a build, which I was going to use to cause havoc.  Nick and John, I will not say you played me like a fiddle so much as you completely neutered me in every possible way.  Bravo.

I knew I was dealing with real criminal masterminds when I decided, as EF was collapsing, to try to cause tensions in the alliance by bringing up the end-game.  John skillfully deflected the question, saying he'd seen too many alliances break down on questions of center-splitting, and that the focus had to be on eliminating EF.  Of course, John also deflected the possibility of a post-conquest alliance breakdown by boldly ATTACKING EVERYONE except England and taking a truly admirable 8 centers in one turn.  Eight.  8!!!  I'm thoroughly impressed.  I tip my cap.  Has anyone ever ever seen someone grow from 10 to 18 in one turn??!

This year I was considering bring up to Nick that he should stab John, but I've been busy getting ready for a big move, so never found the time to type what would've needed to be a work of art. Nick, would you've been at all responsive to such a suggestion?

The one odd thing in this game for me has been Russia, who responded in S01 by saying he thought my ideas (which were vague) were OK and we'd talk later, but then never ever talking to me later.  I was convinced he was stone-walling everyone, but apparently John had  agood deal with him.  But I'm astonished a player dealt with one person while systematically ignoring basically the whole board.  Do I have that right, Stuart, or did you just ignore me :-p

A great game with a comically wonderful ending.  I just got a panicked e-mail from Tim Crosby (he solo'd round 1) saying he now needs to work to maintain his lead if he wants to win the Blitz.  But I dunno.  John - you really earned this win.  You stomped us this game.  I hope you stomp the tourney, as well!

Hey all,

The game started right out of the gate with an RAT triple. We tried some misdirection to try to throw off the rest of the board, but from my very first email to A and R until the very last turn it was RAT all the way. Maslow (italy) was the first casualty of war, as he believed he had a strong AI alliance as well as an IT alliance, though his ultimate goal was my destruction. I was actually a little worried which side Nick (austria) would take. When maslow was brutally betrayed by Austria and I he sent us a great email expressing his congratulations on such a well done stab, and offered to join our merry band. We agreed to allow him to survive until the end if he would be our pawn. The rest of the game was just as it appeared, the iRAT alliance slowly rolled over the board turn by turn. Russia pretty well exclusively built Nothern Fleets, I build Southern Fleets,
and Nick built Armies. This helped relieve a lot of the stress of the triple by making stabs difficult.

My original goal was to stab Russia with Nick's help once we had most of the centers, but our unit divisions made that difficult. Then I thought I would have to settle for a three-way. The last probably 3 seasons I started looking for a way to solo all in one fell swoop. I was basically writing the moves for the whole team at that point, so I knew I could have a chance at it, but if something went arwy with even one center, I was not at all sure I could hold my far flung dots from the retribution that would come. Belgium, in particular, was my biggest concern. I had to convince Nick to move out with no real good reason why he should. And if he smelled a rat (no RAT pun intended there), then I would be up the proverbial creek.

The Western Powers were nice guys. I enjoyed talking with you when I did, although with a solid RAT in place, I never had much of a chance to engage in real conversation. Basically, by the time the full extent of the RAT was revealed, there wan't really anything they could have done without getting one of us to stab. Good game guys.

Stuart was a relatively quiet ally. At first his reserved nature concerned me, but he followed the plan flawlessly each turn, and we worked well together.

I really enjoyed having Nick on my side. He was very involved in all the early discussions, and we hit it off well from the get go. But because of some issues he was going through in real life, he faded away mid game and was basically relying on my orders each turn (at least that's how it appeared to me). Real life has to come first of course, and in my case I think that was the only reason I was able to pull this off. Had Nick been more fully engaged in the game I don't think I could have made this happen. Sorry, Nick. I hated having to stab you. You were a great ally.

Maslow... What can I say, man? We had great talks in the beginning. It was fun talking to you because I knew I was going to attack you and you knew you were going to attack me, and I knew that you knew that, and... well you get the idea. It was fun lying through our teeth at the other. And like I said, I wasn't sure until it happened which one of us was getting the shaft by Nick. It could just as easily have been me, and then of course this game would have ended far differently. And then after the stab hit you, you still never gave up. You were definitely the most engaged other member of the alliance by the end. You threw out suggestions until the very end, and I appreciated your involvment. In fact, the worst part of the stab for me was taking away your survival. You deserved at least a survival, if not more. If I had an option to take a different center besides brest, I would have. Sorry for
the ultimate betrayal there. You deserved better.

And lastly, to our GM, you were great! I enjoyed your comments and the fun we had all the way through. Thanks for doing the Blitz. Being a Blitz GM myself, I know the work involved. You handled the responsibility well!

Thanks all! I've never had a solo on the DC site before, so this is a first for me.

John

Well, what to say? I have to admit that I was stunned by what happened last turn. Perhaps I should have seen it coming and taken better precautions but I didn't. In any event I must admit that John thoroughly deserves his solo and has my wholehearted congratulations. He has been the driving force behind what appeared to be a winning alliance and I have no problem at all being the victim of an extremely well thought out and executed final stab. It just didn't occur to me, lazily, that a jump from 10 to 18 was even on the cards. Anyway, back to the beginning. I was not exactly delighted to see that I had been allocated Austria but I think my greatest good fortune in the game was to have heard from the board’s two great communicators, Maslow and John, within three hours of the GM's initial message with solid offers of alliances (in John's case the ART triple alliance). I have to admit that I was slow to respond initially thanks to the organisers starting the game over the Easter weekend which I don't think was the greatest idea. 1901 was a great year with intensive diplomacy and both of my alliances were working well with excellent exchanges of ideas and I felt I could trust both of them to work, although in my mind I was more committed to the ART alliance and was lying to Maslow throughout. See my dilemma at the beginning of 1902 was to choose sides. The reason I chose to go with John and Stuart was partly because in my heart I was genuinely with them from the very beginning and partly because going with Maslow would involve moving eastward which would result in a delay before being able to engage the Western powers with all my forces. This latter point was decisive because I really wanted to get at Germany before the EFG triangle had the chance to resolve itself. Having said that, the scenario in which I choose to go with Maslow is one of those games which I would love to have played. Both John and I clearly enjoyed our communications with Maslow and so it was an easy decision to bring him into the alliance rather than eliminating him. Having said that we were cautious about letting him have more than one unit, and judging from Maslow's EOG clearly we were right to be so. The low point for me in the game was at the end of 1902 when I ended up being hospitalised for two weeks. I went from intensive communication and thinking about the game to checking my e-mail once a day and my involvement as a result plummeted. The problem was/is a bacterial infection of my knee, which doesn't sound too serious but left me unable to walk. Even though things are much better now and I don't need crutches, the doctors say it will be three more months in the best case scenario before I'm back to normal. The game was moving along smoothly but I have to admit that John was doing all the thinking and planning and I was just moving as he suggested. My heart just wasn't in it anymore and I merely did the minimum necessary to keep things rolling along. In any event, even if I had been fully engaged, I am quite sure the game would have unfolded in much the same manner. Having said that, I was always a bit suspicious of John leaving units lingering in the rear near my unguarded SCs and had I been fully on the ball I would have addressed this matter with him. In answer to Maslow’s question, I was starting to look at the board to judge how I would fare if I stabbed John. My problem was that I needed to wait one more turn due to my failure to build last time. My germ of a plan was to try to destroy the Marseille fleet and see if I could get enough fleets built to block Ion. So, yes, I would have been responsive to a suggestion from Maslow, but John beat us to it anyway! Overall, despite my limited engagement in the latter stages, it was a thoroughly enjoyable game. Many thanks of course to Adam who GM'd the game immaculately and even kept things in context of the tournament as a whole. I look forward to playing with you all again. Nick/Austria

Pardon the expression, but some of you gentlemen have balls of steel.  There were some gutsy decisions with home centers at risk, but as the Latin proverb goes, fortune favors the bold!  Either that, or some of you are just really good diplomats.  And I think we had a breakdown in German efficiency, but I can never truly tell with these sorts of things.  I've had plenty of misorders-both real and feigned-in face-to-face matches.  If any of you feel you need a regular reminder, tell me.  I know most of you are new on the site, but I shouldn't need to send them out; preliminary orders take care of the problem for both you and me.  Deadlines are regularly five days long, plenty of time to figure things out and send a second, third, etc. version.

Winter 1901 adjustments (given below the orders) are due at 9:00pm US Central Time on Wednesday, 6th June, or 02:00 GMT on Thursday, 7th June.

Russia pretty well exclusively built Nothern Fleets, I build Southern Fleets, and Nick built Armies.

Sorry for the ultimate betrayal there.

John

"It's like in the great stories, Mr. Frodo. The ones that really mattered. Full of darkness and danger they were. and sometimes you didn't want to know the end because how could the end be happy? How could the world go back to the way it was when so much bad had happened? But in the end, it's only a passing thing. The shadow, even the darkness must pass. A new day will come. And when the sun shines it will shine out the clearer. Those were the stories that stayed with you - That meant something. Even if you were too small to understand why. But I think, Mr. Frodo, I do understand. I know now. Folk in those stories had lots of chances of turning back only they didn't. They kept going because they were holding onto something."

"What are we holding onto, Sam?"

DC421 - Fall 1908 Results - Corrino   (May 31, 2012, 7:52 pm)
Hi Players,
Can't find a lot to say about this turn.  A couple of gambles turned out badly, but not so badly that they seem likely to swing the game balance in the long term.

Before we look at those, let's take care of the political business.

EXISTING END-GAME PROPOSAL:   3-way Draw to include France, Germany and Turkey FAILS to gain unanimous acceptance.  The game continues.
NEW END-GAME PROPOSAL:    DIAS, which amounts to a 7-way draw including everybody.  Please vote with your SPRING 1909 orders.

HIGHLIGHTS:
The Kaiser gambles and loses in St. Petersburg, not realizing that the Tsar would rather see his
former capital in English hands.
Silesia is the opposite story, however, as the Russian gamble to take Prussia fails and he is forced to retreat by the German counterattack.
Turkey maintains some semblance of benevolent big brotherhood by vacating Venice and leaving Budapest and Vienna untouched. And the stalemate in the Western Med continues.

RETREATS:    Russian army Silesia can retreat to Galicia or OTB.
ADJUSTMENTS:  Germany gains position but loses a unit.  All others remain unchanged, since England has no home SC in which to build.
NEXT DEADLINE:    Russian retreat and German removal are due tomorrow, June 1, by 18:00 Eastern
time.  If I get them tonight, I'll post them tonight.

Cheers,Chris

Hey all,

The game started right out of the gate with an RAT triple. We tried some misdirection to try to throw off the rest of the board, but from my very first email to A and R until the very last turn it was RAT all the way. Once again, multiple centers change hands.  Russia sails into London and Ankara, Germany marches unopposed into Moscow, and France gets a support into Norway. There are two units dislodged, so there will be Autumn 1908 retreats:
The German fleet in London may retreat to Wales or OTB.
The Russian fleet in Norway may retreat to Barents Sea, Skagerrak, St. Petersburg (nc), or OTB. Winter 1908 adjustments will be as follows:
Germany:  build 1 (or build 2 if retreat OTB)
Russia:  no change (or build 1 if retreat OTB)
Turkey:  remove 1 Both the Autumn 1908 retreats and Winter 1908 adjustments will be due tomorrow, Friday 6/1 at 3pm Central (US) / 20:00 GMT.

Sorry guys, your GM can't count.

Assuming both retreats stay on the board, then Germany and England get one build each, not two. Your dumbass GM is forgetting to count the retreating units.

FINAL dc415 Stonehenge Autumn 853 deadline extensi... - jerome777   (May 31, 2012, 3:44 pm)
I'm still waiting for moves for two players. If it were just one I'd have NMRed them by now - but two questions the integrity of the game. But we can't hang around forever.

Tomorrow, 2000GMT, is the final deadline that I'm willing to set. The adjudication, with NMRs, will take place then. If you've not got your moves to me by then, you've been warned.

Best,

Jerome

I am copying the DC Mods on this one...

The time has come to break out the John Philpot Curran quote (1790).  Indeed, it is proper and entirely just:

"It is the common fate of the indolent to see their rights become a prey
to the active. The condition upon which God hath given liberty to man is eternal vigilance; which condition if he break, servitude is at once
the consequence of his crime and the punishment of his guilt."
I can say it no better.  Never, until today, have I witnessed victory so slyly pilfered from the unaware.  John Reside, I tip my hat to you.

Turkey steals *eight* centers and claims to solo.  In the process, *three* players are eliminated.  Oh, and France NMRs.

Turkey: 18
Russia: 10
Austria: 6

End of game comments are welcome.

Special thanks to Maslow and Nathan for continuing to fight in lost positions.  Thanks and condolences to Stuart and
Nick for success and dashed expectations.  Good luck in the final standings, John!
