Mike,
Given the Large Number of Retreats that are expected, and no specification of how many Builds, or Removals are required for each Race, would it not make more sense to have Retreats submitted by Thursday, and Adjustments on Friday? If one of the Retreats is an OTB, it would change the amount of adjustments required for the Race.

I understand you want to keep things moving...

I think Mark was saying he'd like to see the retreats (for example, where CAN retreats) before he makes his removals. Sounds reasonable to me.

Oh, most definitely!  I *always* give 24 hours for Adjustments, and that will never change. So, if I get all the retreats in by 5 PM MST today, deadline can stay the same -- tomorrow at 5PM MST. Otherwise, it slips to Friday.

Seriously, though, we've had 3 straight turns with *5* retreats, and they've all processed on time, with a build phase the following day.
Now we have *6* retreats, with 2 coming from the same power.

This is not a significant increase, so why all the worry *this* time?

Somehow I got it in my head that the retreats and builds were due on the same day. I attribute the confusion to my lack of reading comprehension skills Wink

On a separate note, I don't know how many of you are doing this but I've been sending annual "diaries" to Hoffman for him to publish at the end of the game. A lot happened this turn and I'm not sure I fully understand it but I'd LOVE it if some of you sent something to Hoffman for posterity so that we all could have a better understanding of how the game unfolded. I find that reading those after-action reports (which tend to be much more honest then the in game communications) really improves my skill as a dip player.

Why should I want you to IMPROVE as a dip player?  Its clearly in MY best interest if your skills decay!
That being said, good idea, I will create misleading and disingenuous endgame reports.

To be honest (a wonderful dip phrase Wink, I've found the following maxims to apply to dip (for me at least)

1) Games against better players are more fun
2) Better players are better allies
3) I play my best against better opponents

I used to play a lot in the newbie queues on the judges. I got used to dealing with drop outs but I was always driven absolutely batty by the guy that stabbed me for one SC rather then defending against the rampaging horde behind him all because he was completely incapable of reading an obvious board state.

Besides, the improvement will come at the end of the game when Dwarves are merrily dancing across all the continents in their epic solo victory... just sayin' Wink

DC412 - Turkish EOG - stevec   (Mar 20, 2012, 3:57 pm)
Thanks Chris for a job well done! In a humorous side note, I actually think you may have inadvertently affected the game. It could be sheer coincidence, but after I took Sev and Rum, Russia (Bret) used almost exactly the same language you did to describe what I had done. He did this despite the fact that Rum was a foregone conclusion, I bypassed Bud (although I could easily have taken it), and I only heard about two sentences from Bret during this turn. I didn’t “want” to take Sev, but there were several other concerns. In the vacuum of communication, I had to make my own choices.  As for the game, a few things stand out: it’s no surprise that France and Austria didn’t do well. They didn’t write much and their moves were somewhat puzzling. In fact, it’s almost impossible to do what France did: lose all your home dots by 1902. I’m not slamming him; I’m sure he’s a fine player. In this particular instance, his moves are inexplicable. Austria told me early on he was going to defend on all fronts. As Turkey, that works for me. He offered me Greece, did not communicate on the fall turn, then blocked me out of Greece. Austria and Turkey don’t typically work together, but I had gone to great lengths to explain my willingness to make an AT work. That all pretty much went out the window when he did that and then remained silent. Bret (Russia) insisted on bouncing in Bla. I was “okay” with that, but I’m always concerned about an AIR assault on Turkey, so this left me wondering. Bret was very cautious throughout the game and not very communicative (although more so than Austria). I never actually lied to Bret until the last turn he had a unit on the map. He turned against me after the Rum/Sev debacle, which, while somewhat understandable, was less understandable than trusting EG, who had been after him since early on.  I tip my hat to Nick (England). After his nmr, Germany should have been willing to throw him overboard. It opened Pandora’s Box and there were certainly times Mick could have taken three dots from him. Nick also came up with the single-worst proposal I’ve ever read. He suggested I take my “superfluous” army (which it was) in Arm, convoy it to Bul, sneak it through Serbia to Albania, then take Trieste from Italy and walk the boot. Even a noob would not have gone for that, and while I have certainly been fooled on many occasions, I’m not a noob. My biggest regret in this game was not being able to convince Mick (Germany) of my sincerity. Once I bothered to read the scoring system, I understood the best possible result (probable is a better word) other than a win for me was a 3-way. 2-ways are pretty dicey. In my 30 years of play, I’ve probably had three of them. I was burned once and I’m pretty reluctant to even try for one again. I would have gone to any length to guarantee Mick I would not stab him. I probably would have offered cash if he had asked. Mick was concerned I would go for the win. As often as I asked, he never tried to explain how that would be possible. I still don’t think it was. For Turkey to win, he must get more than Sev/Mos/War, the Balkans, Austria, Italy, and Tunis. Where does the 18th come from? Stp, Munich, or Marseilles. Any of those three would be out of reach without severe German incompetence. I think Mick a very capable player so I’m sorely disappointed that we could not come to an agreement here. Now, for the honest truth. In a thousand years, I never thought I would be working with Eric in this game. First of all, IT’s are rare. Second, when Italy suggests Turkey build armies and promises to go west, it rarely happens. In this case, it did. Eric went “all in,” inviting my fleets west. Initially, this may have looked foolish. I thought it was shaky myself. However, at the end of the day, we had to move aggressively or EG would have swept us from the map. As it was, we claimed the last available stalemate line that would have been sustainable without massive guesswork. Eric was steady to the end—thanks mate! I do believe it should have ended on a 3-way and that Mick will regret this in the second round. I know I will. Best of luck to all, Steve

Ah wouldn't you just know it. I finally fill the game queue after a month of trying, and then the very next day another player comes along to fill the post!

Thanks for the offer Max. I've asked the 9 original players to reconfirm that they're still happy to play in this game, given the fact the game was frozen for so long. If any of these players needs to drop out, then I'll gladly drop you back in. Otherwise, thanks for your help - but you'll need to wait for the next Stonehenge game to be launched.

I'm hoping someone else offers to GM a game of Stonehenge soon. I'd love to play in that variant... Wink

dc407 Austrian EOG - untitled36   (Mar 20, 2012, 8:56 am)
I like to give myself as many options as possible in a new game. The GAR was discussed early, but I would have preferred the EG alliance had it been possible (after the GF was very obviously not happening). Had england been willing to work against the french, I would have gone that route instead. It was only as the EF came to light that I threw myself solidly in with the GAR. As we saw in this game, a GAR is worse for the G than it it for the AR. Austria and Russia can take on turkey right away, but Russia can't immediately help against England, and can't help at all vs france. Not to diminish Russia's help, which is the only thing that kept me alive, but I just wanted to point out that, at least for me, the GAR wasn't a sure thing until the full EF was clear.

Ah as I suspected.. Germany's claim that the alliance came later in the game was a bit disingenuous.. you guys were allied from the start (which was a rumour I had previously heard).
Guess I never stood much of a chance then lol..
Note to self.. dont bother playing games that are stacked against you before you write your first word  ;-(

Not got a huge amount to say beyond that which has been outlined by Germany - he approached me early on to agree we wouldn't attack each other, and my inherent belief that Turkey and Austria can never be solid allies for long was already leading me to work with Russia to knock out Turkey.  As such the three way alliance started early on in the game, albeit with some slight misdirection to try and convince others that Russia and I were at loggerheads.  The alliance was solid throughout the game.  I wavered at one point, and almost flipped sides to work with Turkey against Russia, only changing my mind 15 minutes before the deadline and share with Russia the Turkish moves, which accelerated Turkish decline.  For the first few years of the game I was on good terms with Italy, but he gradually realised that no good was coming of Turkey being knocked out by Russia and I, and after Turkey was gone it was a matter of time
before his demise.

I suspect like Germany and Russia I considered whether I could make a dash for a solo, and also considered whether one of them could as well.  I think Russia had the best shot, but he stayed with the alliance, which his to his credit.

Didn't have a great deal of communication with England and France (none at all from France from memory)

I think if the other four powers had figured out what was going on a bit earlier, then they could have stopped us, whcih would have made for an interesting scenario. I get the impression that communication between the other four wasn't all it could have been - in addition, pretty much every player noted that communication with France was very poor.

Overall, happy with a three way - it's a tournament, so it sets each of us up in good stead for Round 2.  Suggestions that a three way isn't an achievement if agreed from the start doesn't wash for me - it just so happened that an alliance developed in the first year lasted through to the end of the game.  I didn't see any good opportunities to stab and shoot for a solo or a two way, so there wasn't exactly much incentive for me to break the alliance.

I started the blitz with the grand plan to blitz England with France's help, and hopefully get Russia to at least bounce England in Norway, making it a simple, quick conquest. After the fall of England, France would sweep into the med while I rolled East, and eventually we would have a two way GF draw, or maybe I could even earn the solo. That was the great plan. The issue was France would barely talk to me, much less commit to any such alliance. If fact, it became clear he was out to get me. In the process of negotiations, I found I enjoyed chatting with England, and I proposed my second great plan, Work with England Vs France. However, England was far more concerned about Russia, and was unwilling to intervene on the continent. So that was strike two. Meanwhile, I'd hit it off with Russia. We knew each other from a previous Haven Variant. In that game we were enemies, and I tried to get him to betray his allies then, and he wouldn't do it,
so I pegged him as a good potential ally for this game. I also favorable contact with Austria, so the three of us formed the GAR alliance. Austria and I had the general dmz, so mainly we just watched each other's back, while Russia worked with both us us in the north and south. As a side note here, I initially had good discussions with Italy, but at the crucial moment Italy went east to help Turkey instead of moving west to help vs france. So I essentially felt it was Me vs E/F with my only possible salvation being Russia. As the game moved on, and Russia kept growing while I was locked in mortal combat with France, I feared Russia would stab, but I didn't really have any other option than to trust him. I had the proverbial tiger by the tail, and I had to hold on for dear life. Eventually, though, I began to grow, and by that point the game was pretty well done. I got some flak from a couple players about "settling" for the 3 way. For me, I'm just
tickled to have survived. As a German with antagonistic French and aloof English, I wasn't sure I'd pull through. I think only Russia really had the opportunity to solo this one. I figure he was afraid Austria and I would team up and defeat him. Or maybe he was just that much of a team player. I feel like I did the best I could with the hand dealt to me, and I'm proud to "settle" for the 3 way. It was a good game, and a textbook example of a GAR alliance. Thanks to Austria and Russia for the Alliance. it was a very very smooth alliance. We never had any major dispute. Sometimes we discussed various possibilities for orders, but it was never heated or strained (at least as far as I know!). Good game guys! I'd mentioned enjoyed my talks with England and Italy, and essentially, they and I just had different goals. I barely talked with Turkey, but I knew he was a high-ranked player, so seeing him eliminated early was a load off my mind. I wasn't sure until
the very end that he wouldn't find a way to break the alliance. Thanks to our GM for a great game. As a blitz GM I know how much time this can take. You did well! John

Firstly let me thank Chris for Gming the game so well & his quips on how he interpreted the moves.

Initially I had written to both England & France to see if I could make an alliance with either of them. To be honest, I was hoping to work with France rather than England, but I had a gut feeling after the initial correspondence that England would be a more solid ally & as it proved, I was right.

Got off to a flyer with 3 builds after the first year, but then had to move east earlier than I had wanted, as Russia was very nervous & told me he would be moving to Sil. I was hoping to ally with Russia to move against England once France was finished, but that wasn't to be.

Early on, (in my opinion) it looked like E, G & I would end up against A, T & R.

Once A was on his way out I wrote to him a number of times to see if we could cooperate against R/T, but he never bothered to reply.

Once A & F were out & R was a spent force, T & I tried so hard to get me to stab E (& I must admit, I came very close to doing so) but in the end decided it was not worth handing a 2 way draw to I/T & settled for "the bird in the hand"

A big thanks to E who proved to be a good ally, who early on had a chance to stab me in the "Low Countries", but refused the temptation. Thanks to everyone else & best of luck to you all in round 2.

Mick

Subject: DC412 - Game Over!

Greetings, Gentlemen.

The votes are in and the AYES have it!  The DIAS passes.  Our official result is a 4-way draw including England, Germany, Italy and Turkey.

Final SC Tally:

England (Cool:   Edinburgh, Liverpool, London, Moscow, Norway, Portugal, St Petersburg, Sweden.

Germany (9):   Belgium, Berlin, Brest, Denmark, Holland, Kiel, Munich, Paris, Warsaw.

Italy (7):     Marseilles, Naples, Rome, Spain, Trieste, Tunis, Venice.

Turkey (10):    Ankara, Budapest, Bulgaria, Constantinople, Greece, Rumania, Serbia, Sevastopol, Smyrna, Vienna.

I'll have the results posted to the DC site shortly.

I want to congratulate Mick, Nick, Eric and Steve for a job well-done.  That was as solid an EG as I've ever seen.  You quickly got over the stalemate line and pretty much forced the east to resolve as it did with Italy and Turkey set against you.  In my experience, it is a rare thing to see a IT pairing last into the mid-game, but there was little choice in this game.  Any break between those two and EG would have swept the board.  There might have been a chance in there somewhere for E or G to stab the other and try for the solo or a strong 3-way, but it would have been a risky proposition.  As it stands now, I'd say it will difficult but still possible for one of you to win the tournament.  A solo in round 2 would give you a few fractions of a point less than when I won two years ago.

Naturally, EOG statements are encouraged.  Please send directly to the group, and go ahead and include the blitzforum address, as well.  There are actually Dip junkies out there that want to hear what you have to say.

Finally, I'd like to thank all of you for being a great group to GM.  Only one NMR, and only one or two times where people were in slightly late.  If you've ever GM'ed, you know what a hassle it is trying to track down missing orders.  I really appreciate that there was very little of that in this game.  Best of luck to everyone in Round 2.  See you around!

Cheers,

Chris

Turkey Inches Closer to The Magic Number...
Or At Least to a Pretty Large SC Count for a Draw!

Our EGPs Both Fail

We Have a Lot of New Ones Though

Will Russia Live to See the End?

Oh...and We Have Retreats Needed!

All,

It seems that Cory needed my glorious services again (and by glorious I mean free of course, especially given his dentist visit!).

Unfortunately I could not get Cory a end-game last time I showed up but maybe I can this time. But before that let's go retreat-style (due tomorrow afternoon at Cory's regular time):

Turk F Spa(sc) can retreat to GOL or OTB

German A Mun can retreat to Kie, Sil, Ber or OTB

Now, our second order of business - EGPs. Remember to vote on each. A non-vote is a NO vote. Votes are due with Fall on Thursday.

DIAS (draw including all survivors)

E/T

E/T/G/I

E/T/G

Wow...what's missing? Heck I propose a Russian solo at this point. Everybody getting in on the act.

Good luck. Should be an interesting finish.

SV: dc407 Blitz DIAS passes!: England mini EOG - rickyp   (Mar 20, 2012, 4:31 am)
lol... well I think John has a point (I guess no one wanted to win a game designed to be won).

I enjoyed reading Germanys end game.. I think I was outplayed to be honest.. kudos to Russia for some excellent tactics.
Thanks go to France who I really got on well with.. in another game we could be excellent allies.
I quite enjoyed chatting to Germany.. but as you say our aims were never aligned for long enough.. but if our paths cross again I think we have enough common ground to establish some rapport.
As for the rest of you I didnt really get to chat to you much but there was no one I didnt like.. Thanks to the GM(s) who kept the game smooth and I hope to see you all again another day.

Hi there,
Personally, I do not think that a three-way draw is anything to be congratulated for, if that three-way draw is negotiated from early in the game. Call me old-fashioned, but a three-way draw should be something one is forced into, otherwise it is just the refuge of players who know they are not good enough to win on their own and will do anything rather than be eliminated. It is boring Diplomacy for the faint of heart.

Turkey Inches Closer to The Magic Number...
Or At Least to a Pretty Large SC Count for a Draw!

Our EGPs Both Fail

E/T/G

Wow...what's missing? Heck I propose a Russian solo at this point. Everybody getting in on the act.

Good luck. Should be an interesting finish.

DC 409: Spring 1909 Adjudication - AceRimmer   (Mar 19, 2012, 7:39 pm)
My apologies for the late adjudication tonight; I had some minor yet annoying computer troubles. On the bright side, there are no retreats, so everything's still on track for Thursday.
Ah! Sweet, quiet treachery! Well, that's what it looks like, at least. An Italian who told Turkey one thing and then quietly, duplicitously enabled something quite different.
Germany re-occupies Trieste without opposition! France conquers Naples! The Turks and Italians bounce in Ionian! It sucks to be Gareth. But, here's the question I have: can France and Germany sustain a two-player alliance all the way to 17-all? Don't know. But we'll find out soon enough.
No retreats. Orders due on Thursday.

DC412 - Game Over! - Corrino   (Mar 19, 2012, 5:55 pm)
Greetings, Gentlemen.
The votes are in and the AYES have it!  The DIAS passes.  Our official result is a 4-way draw including England, Germany, Italy and Turkey.
Final SC Tally:
England (Cool:   Edinburgh, Liverpool, London, Moscow, Norway, Portugal, St Petersburg, Sweden.
Germany (9):   Belgium, Berlin, Brest, Denmark, Holland, Kiel, Munich, Paris, Warsaw.
Italy (7):     Marseilles, Naples, Rome, Spain, Trieste, Tunis, Venice.
Turkey (10):    Ankara, Budapest, Bulgaria, Constantinople, Greece, Rumania, Serbia, Sevastopol, Smyrna, Vienna.
I'll have the results posted to the DC site
shortly.
Please send directly to
the group, and go ahead and include the blitzforum address, as well.

Cheers,Chris

Consider it so!  Faeries officially retreat to Dragon Coast.  New Faerie-centric map attached.  It’s sort of like looking at the Earth upside down so that North America seems tiny compared to South…  From: Michael Penner [mailto:mvpenner(at)yahoo.com]

dc407 German EOG - untitled36   (Mar 19, 2012, 4:43 pm)

In that game we were enemies, and I tried to get him to betray his allies then, and he wouldn't do it, so I pegged him as a good potential ally for this game.

For me, I'm just tickled to have survived.

I wasn't sure until the very end that he wouldn't find a way to break the alliance.

Thanks to our GM for a great game. As a blitz GM I know how much time this can take. You did well!

John
