The image of the map could have been named a bit better. Sorry. You
didn't expect a turn to go without any hiccup, did you?

dc393 - Fall 1908 Retreats - kevinokelly   (Feb 03, 2012, 9:46 am)
Greetings everyone.  I am waiting on one adjustment.  I thought I had them all, but one person sent an email that I thought contained his order, but it was just an email.  I have followed-up and given until 5p today for the adjustment.  All other adjustments are locked, since you know this knowledge.

Attached is the RP and files for Autumn retreats for your records.  I plan to update the website today with missed pic files.

Mike, thanks for stepping in yesterday. Do you want to know the worst
thing about not having electricity? Okay, worst thing after not being
able to run a Diplomacy game. No electricity also means no gas
central heating doesn't work either.

DC412 WB12 Rd1 - Fall 1902 Results - Corrino   (Feb 02, 2012, 9:51 pm)
Hey, guys.  Sorry this is a bit late.  We had some technical issues and were down to just one computer.  My daughter's homework had to come first.  But here we are now so, without further ado, it's time for...

Episode 5 - Brunch Menu

French Toast, or The Great Ex-Crepe

It's a terrible, twisted tricolour flying over the French nation this morning.  Instead of blue, white and red, we have navy, black and green.

Brest is British.  Paris is
German.  Marseilles is Italian.  Astonishing!  You have to travel south to Iberia to find French colors.  It has been a crazy bad couple of years for our Gallic friends, and it's hard to see how they might get better in 1903.

Blini on the Baltic, or The Sweetish Crepe

Take 3 cups of flour, 1 cup of sugar, and 1 EG.  Mix in large bowl and shove down the throat of any nearby Russians.

Well, what do want from an alliance?  To Tom and Jerry, good beatings = good eating.

Austrian Omelet, or What the Hell is that Crepe?

The Turks set the table, but the Russians went to the wrong restaurant.  The lovely Hungarian capital was there for the taking, but somehow the Russian army got lost on the way.

As a result, the ArchDuke gets to rebuild his third unit, the Tsar must downsize the white army.  Meanwhile,
the Sultan takes two and is now tops in the East with a solid half-dozen.

RETREATS:French F Brest can retreat to Picardy or OTB.  (Note - I will auto-retreat a unit only if ALL retreating units have only one choice.)
Russian F Sweden can retreat to Finland or Gulf of Bothnia or Baltic Sea or Skagerrak or OTB.

ADJUSTMENTS:Retreats will not affect adjustments this time.  Everybody owes me something.

Building 1:  Austria, Germany, and ItalyBuilding 2:  England and TurkeyRemoving 1:  RussiaRemoving 2:  France
See the tables at the end of this message for complete SC Ownerships and Adjustments.

NEXT DEADLINE:  Retreats AND Adjustments are due tomorrow, February 3, at 18:00 EST.

Cheers,Chris

dc408 fall and autumn 1902 results! - coryfucius   (Feb 02, 2012, 4:24 pm)
Germany regains control of Munich, while Russia and Turkey pick off one Austrian center apiece.  England sails into Belgium, and Russia sails into Norway, thus claiming the last open centers. Two units are dislodged, but only one will have an autumn retreat due:  The Austrian army in Rumania has no valid retreats and is destroyed.  The Russian army in Bohemia
may retreat to Silesia or OTB. I'll take the liberty of ordering that Russian retreat to Silesia.  Brian, if you do want to retreat OTB instead, please let me know. Winter 1902 adjustments, due tomorrow, Friday 2/3 at 3pm Central (US) / 21:00 GMT, will be as follows:   England:  build 2  Germany:  build 1  Italy:  remove 1  Russia:  build 2  Turkey:  build 1 Cory   ----- Fall 1902 results: Austria:

Jeff,
If the order makes some sense, I will usually clarify with the player.  For example: ordering DM -> Ella instead of Dai -> Ella. I know you're talking about Daisy Meadows, so I'll enter that order unless after clarification the player tells me the misorder is deliberate.

For correctness, can we have an exception (or at least an honest attempt) to catch invalid orders due to references to invalid territories? Because of the tightness of the board, sometimes a unit is placed over a territory name (the Pirate army in "The High Way" is a good example) and it's easy to make a mistake there... Just a thought

I'd also suggest that no one submit orders on a phone with autocorrect... I've already had my phone screw me a couple times (or try to)

I also learned that "UNDEAD" gets auto-corrected to "Infrastructure" (at least on an android)... go figure...

The powers that be declared that Mist -> Crystal is an *invalid* order.  And I learned something new about the way RW works.

Usually I catch these and allow the player to fix the error before processing. However, I did not in this case.

So, with the eye of fairness watching over my shoulder, I will NOT be checking future moves for correctness.  Feel free to *ask* me about the validity of a move, but any typos or misorders from this point forward will be accepted as intended.

I usually invoke this rule in 1904, so only early by 2 years.

DC406: Spring 02 Retreat Results! - offdisc   (Feb 02, 2012, 2:04 pm)
Hi All,
So, I was at work last night until after 9, and then back at work at 3 AM, and now back at work at 9 AM.  Needless to say, the time in between was spent travelling and sleeping -- and thus the Retreats have not been entered onto the map.

Luckily, there are only 2, so not much changes!

DEADLINE FOR FALL 02 is Tuesday, February 7!

Retreats:
--------------
Undead retreat Everglot -> Istar
Leprechaun retreat Fitz -> Tuatha

And remember there was a missed move of
Archer Endor -> Rift Canyon.

A new map will come out later tonight, unless some kind soul would enter those into their version of RW and produce a map.

Thanks,

Mike

Mike, thanks for stepping in yesterday. Do you want to know the worst
thing about not having electricity? Okay, worst thing after not being
able to run a Diplomacy game. No electricity also means no gas
central heating doesn't work either.
Austria, Germany: as the man says, builds due 1800 GMT.

auto-Judges and Grace period for NMRs - FuzzyLogic   (Feb 02, 2012, 1:19 pm)
Blue had a lot of good points. In fact I don't think I could have expressed them better.

As to dc, we were created to be a friendly gaming group, not an automated move submission "system". Because people get personally vested in these games, I think it leads to a higher caliber of game than what you'll find on one of the automated submission sites.

Remember Dip is at heart, an interpersonal game.

A "system" could be more methodical in many ways. Always on time, never making mistakes -- But board games do not generally exist w such dynamics. I don't know how much you play Face to Face... but in those games, things get hectic. There are people complaining about someone turning in moves past the buzzer, ppl arguing about legibility, and so on. It is human-judgement oriented. We have strived to deliberately keep that human element to the game.

In any case, here another fundamental is that every GM sets his or her own rules. This leads to a diverse array of styles being enjoyed.

Some GM's will give grace periods. Some will run faster games. Personally I like games that move at about a week per turn - around 5 days for the spring / fall and 2 days for the retreats / builds. That seems a good balance of keeping the game hopping and edgy yet still allowing everyone time for real life.

Then there is the WB, which has speedy 2-day turnarounds! How come you aren't playing in that? It seems like just what you're looking for. You might not like the NMR rules tho, of not waiting for missed orders.

If you want to run a game per your style - 24 hour turnarounds and grace periods for missed results, just fill out the "GM a game" form and we'll make it happen! It has been done before, Felix was always a fan of the speedy game, and he had no trouble GM'ing them to a fast schedule.

DC397 - Spring 1908 Results - politesociety   (Feb 02, 2012, 12:38 pm)
Summer 1908

Turkey retreats from Ion to Aeg (no RP on this PC, sorry, so no pic/dpy)

ALSO:

End of game proposal - Solo concession to Germany.

(All surviving players can vote. See also the section in house rules on end of game proposals. http://www.diplomaticcorp.com/info.php?type=houserules)

The deadline for EOG votes is the same as Fall orders (Tomorrow, Friday Feb. 3 at 10 PM GMT). Not voting is considered a "No" vote.

ALSO (this is important) If I have five votes in favor prior to tomorrow at 10 PM, I may end the game at that time, and not wait until Friday night to adjudicate.

Thanks,

Eric

dc408 GM is back! - coryfucius   (Feb 02, 2012, 11:48 am)
My apologies, everyone, I picked up a sinus infection over the weekend that laid me out flat for a few days.  I am back in the saddle now.  Many thanks to Garry for taking care of business while I was away. A reminder, the fall 1902 deadline is today, Thursday 2/2 at 3pm Central (US) / 21:00 GMT.  I have spent the morning wading through my work inbox, so I will be getting to confirmations of fall orders shortly. Cory

It barely seems a moment since we began and *BAM* 1902 is drawing to an end.  <Sniff> They grow up so fast.  Soon, you'll be executing vicious stabs and eliminating opponents.  <Sniff> I'm so proud.
This Winter, England and Russia will claim their delinquent builds.  Even so, I fear the English feel no joy in life... or, perhaps I should say no joie de vivre.  After all, one-third of England is busily straining to learn French.  That convoy to Yorkshire is a killer.
In the South, Italy sides with Turkey against Austria-Russia... but it's only Russia who gets any builds.  Still, Austria cannot like the looks of that Italian fleet in the Adriatic.

Retreats:
The Austrian fleet in Greece auto-retreats to Albania (if you wish to disband, please submit a disband order and a build order by tomorrow's deadline).
The Russian fleet in Sweden may retreat to Finland, Gulf
of Bothnia, Skagerrak, or off the board.

Turkey:    Supp  4 Unit  4 Build  0
(This assumes that neither Austria nor Russia chooses to retreat off the board.  If either does choose to retreat off the board, please submit an extra build).

The Winter 1902 adjustments are due *simultaneously* with the Fall 1902 retreats.  I will adjudicate *both* tomorrow at 2:00 p.m. CST.  [Note the change of time... as we have an Alaskan, I thought it wise to adjust the time for the future].  If you choose, you may make your Winter
orders conditional... e.g. "If Russian F Sweden retreats to Ska, then build xxx; if Russian F Sweden retreats to GoB, then build yyy; if Russian F Sweden retreats off the board, then waive build".

auto-Judges and Grace period for NMRs - DucatiRider   (Feb 02, 2012, 9:39 am)

There are a lot of websites that use automated judges.

You sure? Where? There are a lot of judges that you submit orders to. But very few actual website based judge sites. The only one I know of is playdiplomacy.com. But they exclusively use CD for NMRs.

I don't see the need for exclusivity. Why can't this site run both judge based games for those that like quicker deadlines as well as human based judges? Why can't it have CD NMR games as well as grace period NMR games? Why the need for just one version?

There are pros and cons to both NMR systems. Really no need to debate the differences. Both are systems used in the Diplomacy world so why not allow for both?

DC 413 Fall 02 Adjucation - untitled36   (Feb 02, 2012, 9:16 am)
*Germans Reach Caspian Sea!*
*Stabs in the East and West?*
*Six Centers Have a New Owner!*

Hey all,

What a turn, ladies and gentlemen! Russia takes a hit in the north and in the south, while France fends off an attack on Belgium. With all the excitement, though, only Russia has a net loss of centers. Russia also has two retreats. F swe can only retreat to bot, and F sev can only retreat to arm. Of course, either or both could instead retreat off the board. While both the retreats and the builds/disbands are both due tomorrow at 8:00 AM CST, technically the retreats happen first. This means you can submit conditional builds based n the retreats (for example, "If Russia retreats swe-bot, build A smy; if Russia retreats Swe OTB, then build F Con"Wink. Note though that Russia could also retreat Swe-bot and then choose to disband bot in winter.

Builds:
Austria even
England +1
France even
Germany +1
Italy even
Russia -3 (or -2 or -1 if one or both fleets retreat otb)
Turkey +2

My grandmother went into the hospital this week, and I may be away from internet tomorrow, so please make absolutely sure you cc the orders box, as I might have a Blitz moderator run winter for me tomorrow.

John
