Forwarding e-mails - Godzilla (Mar 23, 2011, 9:15 am) |
pedro, you asked about the strong feelings associated with message-passing, and you got the answer, "It varies". Some players hate it, and some are indifferent to the tactic.
As for it being "close to illegal", that is somewhat like being "kind of pregnant": it's a case of either/or. There are very few forbiddens in Diplomacy -- deception of the GM being pretty much universal -- and in all my games I've never come across one in which message-passing was outlawed. Players can react to the message-forwarding as they choose, but there is no legal recourse within the game for such action.[Reply] |

I think comparing "almost illegal" to "almost pregnant" is a little silly. Nevertheless, some players consider it near heresy. I do it rarely, but I'll do it in particularly dire circumstances. I've even been known to falsify e-mails from "others" to make my point. Anything for the game, you know.
Some players oppose the tactic so much they don't care what the e-mail says, they will immediately go after you for being so disreputable. I had one player call me "insulting to the hobby," which seemed a bit harsh. So there are risks, but that's always true. The tactic, however, is not (and really cannot be) forbidden.
I'll add if people forward me an e-mail from someone else, I generally disapprove. Not because I'm a hypocrite, but because it isn't for something ridiculous enough. It is, for me, a last ditch effort. Forwarding e-mails to prove a 1901 FE alliance seems a little unnecessary, and while I won't insult the player or throw my forces haphazarly against them for revenge, I will doubt their cunning and probably consider them easy meat for the rest of the game. |

Silly comparison? Not really. Now the expression "kind of pregnant" is silly, but I didn't make it up. However, nothing wrong with the analogy. One cannot be "kind of pregnant" -- one is or one isn't. In Diplomacy, something cannot be "almost illegal" -- either you can do it without breaking rules, or you cannot do it without breaking rules. For all the strong feelings against message-passing, have never seen a game in which it was illegal. |

I see what you mean here. I've done it in the past, and in my early games I thought I was being clever by doctoring or even faking entire emails from other players - this was on some of the USAK/other name stlye judges where you were unlikely to play the same people again and thus gain a reputation.
I stopped forwarding messages when I realised that if I forwarded something to someone, they would more than likely assume I was doing the same with their mails. I think that was in my first game on this site. Since then I've been clean. Clearly you are going to pass on information occasionally, but being trustworthy with information is a much better reputation to have than the opposite. |

My take on forward emails is this: I don't do it but as far as I am concerned when it comes to diplomacy between players all is fair in love and war. I try not deal with players that letter pass but I don't think you can write anyone out of the hobby over it.
The only thing I consider cheating is having to do more with the GM or the results rather than among the players.l |

My query wasn't really about whether it's good or bad play - like most tactics, it seems to me to be bext used sparingly - but the impression I was given was that it was close to illegal on the site. [Reply] |

We have no community rule on this, not even a "best practices" sort of thing... So as far as any dc game goes, it's perfectly legal.
However, GMs can write their own house rules on the matter. I do know of one GM that does so and prohibits the forwarding of mail.
Like you say here tho, (and like most tactics) it is best used when it's not expected. So building a reputation for such is terrible... but if you have a situation where you can do something creative w a forwarded, quoted, or doctored mail, and you think it will be received well or accomplish your goal, then by all means... |
Forwarding e-mails - Godzilla (Mar 23, 2011, 6:17 am) |
It is certainly true that emails can be heavily edited before forwarding. I've been in the Diplomacy community long enough that I used to play by mail (gasp!), and it is perhaps from that forum that my aversion to mail-passing stems. Because in that format, of course, a letter passed on, in one's own handwriting, was extremely damning. [Reply] |

DC 373 announcement - archimedes (Mar 23, 2011, 5:39 am) |
Gentlemen,
I will be leaving on Saturday Morning to go on a Boy Scout Camping Trip to Gettysburg, Pa. I will return on Tuesday evening. I will take my new laptop with me--assuming it arrives before I leave-- though there is no guarantee that I will be able to access internet on the way. I apologize for any inconvenience this causes. So write early and write often.
Thanks

dc380 game start! - ddz999cat23 (Mar 23, 2011, 12:09 am) |
Cory, as a resident of the Land of Lincoln I was figuring my property
taxes alone would make up about 25% of the state's shortfall.
Bad Round 1 for me in the WB. Hoping to make that up this round... I mean... hoping to help each of you achieve your wildest dreams.
Thanks for GMing and Good Luck All!

Guys,
please use my dipcorp.player(at)gmail.com address going forward.
It helps me separate the DC messages from the usual stuff so I will have one less excuse to NMR.
Cory, looking forward to your GM style again.
Will introduce myself properly later.
Frank
2011/3/22 Cory Burris <coryfucius(at)yahoo.com>
Welcome to our round 2 game of DC Winter Blitz 2011, everyone!
For those of you who don't already know me, my name is Cory Burris, and I have been a member of DC for nearly 5 years. Most of my Diplomacy in recent years has been limited to GM duties, as the task of locating billions of dollars for a cratering state budget has taken up a fair amount of my time. I work in the budget office of the Governor of Illinois, an unenviable task, as Illinois has been doing its best to catch up to California as the US state with the lowest bond rating. Even with a big income tax increase that took effect earlier this year, our state still can???t pay all its bills and balance its budget. Does anyone know where to find $8 billion fast?
Since this is a tournament game, there is a common set of rules and season deadlines that all GMs are observing. This can be found at www.diplomaticcorp.com/tournament.php -- be sure to click the "Rules" option near the top of the main screen once you go to this page. Notably, all spring deadlines will occur on a Monday, fall deadlines will be on a Thursday, and winter adjustments will occur on a Friday. GMs are able to choose the time when orders are due, so for this game, I am setting all game deadlines at 3pm Central (US) / 21:00 GMT.
An important note: when submitting orders, make sure to include the game identifier "dc-380" in the subject line, and also cc: the tournament's Orders box (orders-at-diplomaticcorp.com) -- this is for your protection in case your e-mail doesn't get through to me, or if I am not available and need a moderator to run a turn. One of my players in dc-291 sent an e-mail that didn't arrive in my inbox for a day, but fortunately did reach the Orders box, saving him from an NMR.
Press is allowed and encouraged. For those who are unfamiliar with press, that is simply generic messages that are made public as a part of the turn's results. Typically, press is just generic silliness that may or may not pertain to the game. There is actually some good press in the dc-274 game, so you can read the different turns on that game to see some examples. Please be sure to introduce yourselves to your fellow players.
Don't forget to check out the game's page on the DC web site at www.diplomaticcorp.com/game_page.php?game_id=dc380 -- I will update it after each adjudication. I will also e-mail each adjudication to everyone, as well as a .dpy game file for use in the Realpolitik adjudication software.
And now your lineups! We have a nice mix of experienced and newer members of DC for this game:
Austria: Mick Cox (mickstagman-at-aol.com)
England: Poul Hurup (hurup-at-pc.dk)
France: The Czech (theczechatwebdip-at-gmail.com)
Germany: Dan Sinensky (dan.i.sinensky-at-gmail.com)
Italy: Frank Bielschowsky (bielschowsky.f-at-googlemail.com)
Russia: Tim Fuhrmeister (timfuhrmeister-at-yahoo.com)
Turkey: Daniel Dzikowicz (ddz999cat23-at-yahoo.com)
The spring 1901 deadline will be Monday, March 28 at 3pm Central (US) / 21:00 GMT. Preliminary orders are strongly encouraged! Thanks for playing, everyone, and happy stabbing!

dc371: Sp03 Results! - dknemeyer (Mar 22, 2011, 6:59 pm) |
Gents,
A very interesting season with some creative moves thwarted by sound defense. The greater Ionian Sea has no less than four powers squaring off across the impassable deepest regions of the central Med. Rome's trajectory remains stratospheric, while on the other end of the continuum Persia shows fighting spirit but simply faces too many foes - at least, at the moment. Carthage wanes, Egypt waxes, and Greece celebrates rome's disinterest in an eastern campaign. So goes Spring 03!
There is only one retreat this season: Roman A Cappadocia can retreat to Galatia or OTB. I've provisionally retreated the unit to Galatia; Tim, if you prefer OTB just let me know and I will run an actual summer season.
All players, please recall that we are taking next week off to accommodate a player's vacation. Kindly get prelims in for the fall by this Friday, March 25, *but* the fall adjudication will not commence until Tuesday April 5.
Enjoy!

Forwarding e-mails - DancingQueen (Mar 22, 2011, 3:32 pm) |
As a long time F2F player, I have never understood the problem that the email community has with forwarding email. I have always taken it just as I would someone telling me what another player is saying. The tangible artifact of the email is so easily edited that it is almost valueless.
Which, IMO, makes it a particularly poor tactic when used against good players, who will recognize it for what it is -- an attempt to gain influence that isn't based on the merit of the speaker, but on the (supposed) bad behavior of someone else.[Reply] |
Forwarding e-mails (Community) Godzilla Mar 23, 06:17 am |
It is certainly true that emails can be heavily edited before forwarding. I've been in the Diplomacy community long enough that I used to play by mail (gasp!), and it is perhaps from that forum that my aversion to mail-passing stems. Because in that format, of course, a letter passed on, in one's own handwriting, was extremely damning. |
Forwarding e-mails (Community) pedros Mar 23, 06:33 am |
My query wasn't really about whether it's good or bad play - like most tactics, it seems to me to be bext used sparingly - but the impression I was given was that it was close to illegal on the site. |
Forwarding e-mails (Community) Godzilla Mar 23, 09:15 am |
pedro, you asked about the strong feelings associated with message-passing, and you got the answer, "It varies".
Players can react to the message-forwarding as they choose, but there is no legal recourse within the game for such action. |
Forwarding e-mails (Community) Blueraider0 Mar 23, 11:03 am |
Forwarding e-mails (Community) Godzilla Mar 23, 12:23 pm |
Silly comparison? Not really. Now the expression "kind of pregnant" is silly, but I didn't make it up. However, nothing wrong with the analogy. One cannot be "kind of pregnant" -- one is or one isn't. In Diplomacy, something cannot be "almost illegal" -- either you can do it without breaking rules, or you cannot do it without breaking rules. For all the strong feelings against message-passing, have never seen a game in which it was illegal. |
Forwarding e-mails (Community) rodtheworm Mar 24, 05:22 pm |
I see what you mean here. I've done it in the past, and in my early games I thought I was being clever by doctoring or even faking entire emails from other players - this was on some of the USAK/other name stlye judges where you were unlikely to play the same people again and thus gain a reputation.
I stopped forwarding messages when I realised that if I forwarded something to someone, they would more than likely assume I was doing the same with their mails. I think that was in my first game on this site. Since then I've been clean. Clearly you are going to pass on information occasionally, but being trustworthy with information is a much better reputation to have than the opposite. |
Forwarding e-mails (Community) FlapJack Mar 26, 02:42 am |
My take on forward emails is this: I don't do it but as far as I am concerned when it comes to diplomacy between players all is fair in love and war. I try not deal with players that letter pass but I don't think you can write anyone out of the hobby over it.
The only thing I consider cheating is having to do more with the GM or the results rather than among the players.l |
Forwarding e-mails (Community) FuzzyLogic Mar 23, 12:13 pm |
We have no community rule on this, not even a "best practices" sort of thing... So as far as any dc game goes, it's perfectly legal.
However, GMs can write their own house rules on the matter. I do know of one GM that does so and prohibits the forwarding of mail.
Like you say here tho, (and like most tactics) it is best used when it's not expected. So building a reputation for such is terrible... but if you have a situation where you can do something creative w a forwarded, quoted, or doctored mail, and you think it will be received well or accomplish your goal, then by all means... |

You still choose which unit to remove, tho if no unit is chosen the F ION will default off the board.

dc380 game start! - coryfucius (Mar 22, 2011, 1:37 pm) |

Italy: Frank Bielschowsky (bielschowsky.f-at-googlemail.com)
Russia: Tim Fuhrmeister (timfuhrmeister-at-yahoo.com)
Turkey: Daniel Dzikowicz (ddz999cat23-at-yahoo.com)
The spring 1901 deadline will be Monday, March 28 at 3pm Central (US) / 21:00 GMT. Preliminary orders are strongly encouraged! Thanks for playing, everyone, and happy stabbing!

Hi Folks,
4.5 scant hours until final orders are due!
Please note I am at a conference this week. While I will adjudicate before going to bed it is possible it is many hours later than the deadline. As always, orders can only be changed after the deadline by invoking your single extension for the game.
Thanks and good luck this season!

dc382 - Game start England's hello - ponkwilliams (Mar 22, 2011, 11:27 am) |
Hey all,
I'm excited to be joining this, the second round of the 2011 Winter Blitz, and playing your England in DC382. I tend to be pretty good about replying to mail quickly but I'll let you know what days I might have hiccups in negotiations.
Unfortunately - for example - the 28th is a busy day for me and I won't have any time to make last minute decisions.
I see that I know everyone's location and thought it would be fair if you knew mine. I live in Kansas City, MO, US. I've been here all my life. I studied Electrical Engineering at UMKC and currently tutor for a living.
I send good luck to all in your dip negotiations.
Cheers,
-Robin Carroll-Dolci

Diplomats,
There has been a slight hiccup in the players for this game. It appears that Bruce was unable to play in the second round. To replace him we have
Robin.
Please take your time and introduce yourself to Robin, who is taking over as England.
Oh, and get those preliminary orders in...

Diplomats,
Welcome to the second round of the 2011 Winter Blitz at Diplomatic Corp. I've looked through what you've played in the first round and assigned each of you a new country to play for the second round.
Orders
By this time you should know the drill:
Spring movement on Mondays
Summer retreats on Tuesdays
Fall movement on Thursdays
Autumn retreats and Winter adjustments on Fridays
I will not go chasing you to get your orders. There will be occasions when I send out a reminder, but don't count on it. Send in preliminaries as soon as possible to avoid getting those NMRs.
Voting
I'm fairly certain that you know of the voting rules as well, but here they are:
Proposals are sent in with your orders or made public to everyone.
I will present the proposals along with the next adjudication.
Votes are due in the Spring or Fall.
A unanimous "Yes" is needed for a vote to pass. A missed vote will count as a "No".
Administration
When sending me orders, always include at least the name of the game (dc382) in the subject line. I would also prefer if you include the year and season as well as the country name in the subject. I try to confirm all orders within 24 hours.
The adjudications will include a "dpy" file, the orders and their adjudications, as well as maps of the game. The "dpy" file can be opened by using RealPolitik. For those of you who use RP to enter your orders, I would appreciate if you copy the name of the country as well as the orders when sending them in. It makes it a lot easier for me to enter the orders correctly.
I'll also try to run the adjudications between 8pm and 9pm in Sweden. This will mean that the adjudications will be due by 8pm. For those in Europe, this is in the evening, while in America it comes out at sometime during the early afternoon. I will include the due time in GMT for all adjudications. Note however that the GMT is not subject to daylight savings, etc. It seems that by the first adjudication we'll all have entered daylight savings time however, so that should cause no trouble once you're all used to the time schedule.
If there are any other questions, feel free to send them my way.
With that out of the way, here is the setup for the game:
Next turn: Spring 1901 Movement.
Next Deadline: Monday 28th of February 2011, 18:00 GMT (6PM).
Good luck to you all.

dc382 - Game start (Winter Blitz) z93blom Mar 24, 03:19 pm |
Diplomats,
I hear concerns that some people are not responding.
First off - know that that can be a valid tactic in and of itself. Perhaps not the most successful tactic, but a valid one.
Secondly - the Winter Blitz waits for noone. The adjudications are planned to run parallel for all the games - on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday. If you have not sent in orders for that turn by the time they are due, you are awarded an NMR. There will be no chasing around, asking for people to submit orders.
Also, something that I forgot to tell you all about:
Remember, that since we are keeping a tight schedule for the Winter Blitz - if for some reason I do not adjudicate on time there are backup GM:s ready to take my place. They will also not go around asking for orders. Instead they will get their orders from the common orders(at)diplomaticcorp.com mailbox. Be sure to send a copy of all orders there as well as to me.
Next turn: Spring 1901 Movement.
Next Deadline: Monday 28th of March 2011, 18:00 GMT (6PM).

DC 373: F1901 Adjudication - AceRimmer (Mar 22, 2011, 10:59 am) |
???There is a tide in the affairs of men
Which taken at the flood, leads on to fortune;
Omitted, all the voyage of their life
Is bound in shallows and in miseries.???
- The Tragedy of Julius Caesar
It has been my observation that, due to their multinational borders, Rumania and Belgium often receive lots of love and fawning attention during Fall 1901. Such proves the case this year. Four units engage in Rumania. And the victory goes to Russia. *Five* units engage in Belgium (including the convoying fleet??? one of a staggering three convoys this season), and the victory goes to??? Tintin, who retains his independence whilst the English and German units bounce. Belgium (and waffles) for the Belgians!
Elsewhere, players gobble up unclaimed centers. There are no retreats. Thus, we come to the momentous Winter 1901 builds. Friend, what will you build? Will you build boldly to brazenly announce your intentions for 1902? Or will your builds ambiguous be? In hopes to lull your ???allies??? into trustfully exposing their backsides to you?
We shall learn soon enough! Winter 1901 orders are due Thursday at 10:00 a.m. CST (15:00 GMT). Your adjustments are as follows (Supp = supply centers; Unit = current number of units; Build = number of units you get to build):
Austria: Supp 5 Unit 3 Build 2
England: Supp 4 Unit 3 Build 1
France: Supp 5 Unit 3 Build 2
Germany: Supp 5 Unit 3 Build 2
