The Road not Haven - FuzzyLogic   (Sep 08, 2014, 3:34 pm)
body, p, table { font-family: verdana, sans-serif; font-size:12px; } .disclaimer { color:#900;font-size:10px; }

19 came out to the Haven wood
Eagerly out to lead their clan
Procrastinating, often they stood
Waiting and waiting as long as they could
Although they had no backup plan

Then came the deadline right on time
And having had no moves turned in
Their units cried to their leader: I'm
Standing here not having been
Given any prelims to direct me.

And so that morning, equally lay
In zones and provinces orders lack
They may sit there for another day
Or get dislodged and sent away
I doubt if they would ever come back

I shall be telling this with a sigh
Somewhere hours and hours hence:
19 came to play this game, and I--
I warned them all to submit moves by
Their soonest reasonable convenience

Thursday!

Oceania short one confirmation! - hapolley   (Sep 08, 2014, 10:16 am)
We need a USoA player to replace the unconfirmed player.
This is a fun game with the 'attack where the enemy isn't strategy' possible thanks to the army Island hopping rules.

It is a gunboat game which will attempt to use a game digest for press.

EUROPE 1615 - REWORKED - mmedeiros   (Sep 07, 2014, 12:28 am)
Hello everyone. After a productive chat with Charles Feaux de la Croix, creator of 1648, I went back and made some changes to the rules of Europe 1615. Made some simplifications and reworked the rules on the game modifiers, now called 'sanctions'. Originally the sanctions were voted on by the players, but this didn't work as I had hoped. Now what I have is a set of rules reminiscent of card-driven games. Each player receives a randomly generated list (much like a dealing out of cards) that they may use each year to impose new rules/restrictions in the game. Although they are an optional component to the game, I'd still like to test them out. A new set of rules has also been created to deal with the Ottoman movements. Europe 1615 borrows ideas from Ambition & Empire, Payola, and an old diplomacy game called Origins of WW1. Anyhow, looking for a few folks to play-test the new mechanics.

In a not unexpected turn of events, the start of the new year has old rivalries put aside as the remaining powers form a seeming alliance to keep Italy from the top spot. Is it too late? Only time will tell.. There are a few retreats this turn. Each unit has only one place to go, so in the interest of saving time, I took the liberty of placing them; though technically any or all of you can disband to rebuild in the Winter, if you so wish. R006: Oceania Map Change! - hapolley   (Aug 31, 2014, 12:02 pm)
The Gmes most important feature is that armies can move _directly_ from one island chain to another ("island hopping"Wink as long as both chains (independent of being multispaced or singlespaced) border the same sea
province. This feature is restricted to armies.

I have cleaned up the map so place names are more readable. One change to the map has been made so Japan will not win the game so easily. Davao Island has been changed to a Chained area so it is no longer so easy for Japan to gain control of this region unchallenged.

DC506 - Blitzkrieg variant rules - cbconnell   (Aug 29, 2014, 11:37 am)
In case you haven't seen these already, this is basis for the Blitzkrieg variant.

from http://www.dipwiki.com/?title=Blitzkrieg

Blitzkrieg
aka 1939.Blitzkrieg. created 2002 in France
Author: Stefan Mrdja (text revised by Craig Connell)
In Standard Diplomacy seven nations are standing on the edge of
World War I. Taking place several years later, this 8-player, 53 Supply
Center 1939.Blitzkrieg variant takes us to the beginning of the second
global conflict. 27 Supply Centers are required to win this game.
Rules

1939 Blitzkrieg is played according to standard rules. In addition to
the usual players, Spain is included in this variant; with Turkey and
the Balkans playing a more active role. England starts play at two
locations: the British Isles and North Africa / Egypt with a total of 5
Supply Centers.
There are special features on the map, which is similar to the Modern Variant.
Among the new items is the inclusion of Supply Centers in North Africa,
two additional ones in Eastern Europe, the division of the Black Sea
into two parts, and additional Supply Centers in Ireland, Sardinia and
Sicily.
Coasts: Leningrad is divided into North and South Coast. The only
opening play possible from the Fleet in (LEN) is to (LAP) or (BAR). The
province Rome is divided into an East and West coast. Any unit in
Sevastopol cannot move from (SEV) to (CAU) directly - or vice versa.
Passages / land bridges: There are three land bridges on the map:
between Clyde (CLY) in Scotland and North Ireland (NIR); between Tanger
(TAN) in Morocco and Granada (GRA) in Spain; and between Naples (NAP)
to Sicily (SCI) in Italy. Armies do not need to use Convoy orders, but
can directly use these passages. For example, A Fleet in Naples (NAP)
can not directly move to Sicily (SCI) or vice versa. Only armies can use
these land bridges.
The Sudan/Red Sea: A fleet in Alexandria cannot move into the Sudan (SUD), as the Red Sea is not passable.
Switzerland and Sweden are neutral provinces and thus are not passable.
The following islands are shown on the map, but are not passable: Corsica, Balearen, Cyprus, Crete
Unclaimed Provinces:

At the start of the game, these provinces contain unclaimed Supply
Centers:
Caucasus, Mauritania, Norway, Lithuania, Dublin, Denmark, French West
Africa, Lisabon, Tripolitania, Damascus, Greece, Sicily, Venice,
Bulgaria, Rumania, Piedmont, Hungary, Austria, Warsaw, Danzig, Holland,
Belgium, Sardinia.

Fwd: RE004 - Blitzkrieg now DC506 - cbconnell   (Aug 29, 2014, 11:03 am)
We've got eight confirmed players, so we're ready to play! Our game number is DC506

Our player are as follows:

ID Country Name Email Location
BigJim Spain Jonas Mikaelsson *** Stockholm, SE
bret_pollack France Bret Pollack *** Marriottsville, MD, US
Cartesian USSR John Langley *** Nottingham , NOTTS, UK
hurup England Poul Hurup *** Holbaek, DK
jesterstear Germany Jan Willem Omlo *** Groningen, GR, NL
john_kelly Italy Jeremiah Attento *** Manila, PH
pedros Turkey Pete Dale *** Touring the canals!, YORK, UK
sinistersamxiii Balkans Sam Peters *** Glenwood, MN, US

To reiterate: Blitzkrieg adds an another player playing as Spain and the balance of power is different as well: England has 5 units, France 4 units, Germany 4 units and Turkey has 4 units (the other countries remain the same as the Standard game). This game will also be using "Chaos builds" - new units can be built in any supply center controlled by you. This new map contains land 3 bridges for armies (not for fleets) to cross, plus makes Switzerland AND Sweden impassable.

Since there are 53 supply centers, 27 will be required to win the game solo. This could be a long game.

Our first move deadline will be Monday, September 8 at 8:30 PM MDT (9-9-14 at 03:30 GMT)

A couple of notes:

1. Be sure to check out the house rules, which are linked on the game page and included on this email.
Diplomaticcorp House Rules.pdf

2. The facility to send anonymous messages exists (gray or black press) - just forward me the message you want sent, and I'll pass it on.

3. I'd encourage you to send preliminary orders in - you never know when technology will let you down or you'll be caught without email access!

4. Any questions about the game or rules I'm happy to help - just drop me an email

5. This game starts in Spring of 1939. When submitting your orders, please use our starting season of S39. The accepted format for orders is: DC506 [country name] [season] [order version] examples: DC506 England Fall 41 v1; DC506 France Winter Builds 1947 v3; DC506 Germany Spring 45

6. I attached the Realpolitik variant file for your own use while playing.

This is a different map and there are some changes -- familiar territories have new names or have been divided. Here is a list of all the official territories and their abbreviations that are used: Please be sure to use the new names as it may cause confusion if you don't - you may end up in a different location than you expected!

Several ppl seem confused by the lack of a dedicated retreat phase.  I will generally combine Retreats and Builds into one turn.  I've done it that way in most games I've GM'd.  This saves us one adjudication per game year (better efficiency) and reduces down-time where ppl are just sitting around waiting for a single order.

Even tho the retreats technically occur first, I will post the retreats and builds at the same time.  However if the retreat would affect your build in some way, you are welcome to submit builds conditional upon any retreats.  (if he retreats here, build this... otherwise, this) and I'll adjudicate accordingly.

In some turns where the retreats are particularly complicated and might affect builds in ways that would be tough to write conditions for, I reserve the option to do a separate fall retreat phase, but those should be rare.

This is just a matter of keeping the game flowing and minimizing down-time.

These first years are so much fun!  Treachery abounds -- so many contested zones!

The Leprechauns and Ogres clash over Whoville...
The Shades and Elves battle for the Valley of Lost Honor...
The Centaurs skip out on the fight, only to see the Rogues and Trolls bounce 2:2 over Orboros.... the Rogues clearly getting the worst of that deal as they get bounced on both gains and lose a home center.
The Barbarians get stuffed invading the Kingdom of Hearts and lose a home center... but still manage a build at the Centaurs' expense

Who actually did well?

It would seem the Undead, Hobbits, Wizards, Pirates, Dwarves, and Magicians all had relatively peaceful turns.  No battles to speak of and everything they moved went more or less where it was ordered to.

The Gnomes, Knights, Pirates and Hobbits pull off the magical BUILD 3 opening salvo.

Haven storytime - Operations   (Aug 28, 2014, 1:34 pm)
Ah, but that uses only the strict economic sense of the term. There are many ways to "make it". Homer is still referenced over a thousand years after his death. One could certainly argue that he "made it" in terms of recognition and reputation.

I disagree with your assessment of "made it". Your joke might still
be repeated a thousand years from now, yet unless you can cash in on
it, you didn't make it in a comedy business Smile

Um, Homer would have approved!  He had more sex jokes, in colloquialisms like that one, then south park and George Carlin combined! Also I reject your premise that Homer did not make it in the entertainment industry!  Look at how many movies are based on his works! Not to mention references in TV and books!

Two bounces!  The Magicians and Undead
clash over the West Sea of Shadows, while the
Centaurs and the Rogues fight for the Orboros dot.
Everyone else got more or less what they ordered...
tho it would seem as an uninformed bystander that
many of these were not as expected from ones
neighbors.  A few points catch my eye... Of the 4
nations that could, not one went for Dargaard Keep!
Usually hotly fought over, that will remain a
neutral into year 2... And another highly contested
space, the High Seas went completely vacant.
Interesting start!

Let's set the
Fall for a little over a week... Thu 8/28.  12
noon.  Builds after Labor Day (9/1 in the US).
Things are a little slower than normal since there's
some vacations criss-crossing and I want to be sure
everyone has at least a few days.

I disagree with your assessment of "made it". Your joke might still
be repeated a thousand years from now, yet unless you can cash in on
it, you didn't make it in a comedy business Smile

Ergo, I refuse to burn

Ah, but that uses only the strict economic sense of the term. There are many ways to "make it". Homer is still referenced over a thousand years after his death. One could certainly argue that he "made it" in terms of recognition and reputation.
