dc308 - Spring 1905 Results - z93blom   (May 28, 2010, 1:21 pm)
Gentlemen,
The spring moves eliminate Russia and Turkey takes a beating. It's going to be very exciting to see what happens over the next seasons...
The only retreats that were needed were for our friends who were in civil disorder - and all units have retreated OTB, so we move immediately into the next season - Fall 1905. I'm currently very busy both at work and privately, so we'll allow a week for the turn.

Next turn: Fall 1905 Movement

Next Deadline: Friday, 4th of June, 18:00 GMT (6PM).

Gentlemen,
There's about 22½ hours left before the moves are due. I have confirmed all order sets that I have received so far. If you do not have a confirmation from me I don't have your orders...

I'd vote for a 4-way BRSG if someone proposed that, but Nigel should be part of a draw.

I will be voting in favour because I proposed it: due to RL issues that I don't want to go into, I need to finish playing dip for a while, maybe for good. So although theoretically I can defend some dots for a long time, i'd rather not have to try. Just thought I'd make that clear.  If the game continues, i'll try to keep my end up

Just because one player already gave up doesn't mean the other ones will. I will do everything I can to stop the win. Good luck, sir,

Whichever force you take off, your line springs a hole, and I''ll leap on it.I don't need to get to Rome: Greece and 2 more will do. Most fun if Douglas and I try to make those two the French ones rather than Italian, so your line could even hold and you would still lose. (Though taking Liverpool is a bit harder than going for Venice say) (what is the emoticon for an evil chuckle anyway?)

Realpolitik help - dknemeyer   (May 28, 2010, 9:13 am)
Kind thanks for the reply Matthew. Mike Sims actually replied to me privately and pointed out an old forum thread that showed how to overcome the issues I was having. My Mac appeared to have it properly installed and loaded when in fact it was not yet fully installed as an application. The pointers also helped me figure out how to add new variants which I may not have been able to determine without it.

I am glad to be up and running. Smile

DC302 Game End Statement - Slangers   (May 28, 2010, 8:45 am)
Well, first of all a big French thank you to Michael for running the game so well. We had no GM errors in this game at all, and I know that is a great achievement. Everything ran like clockwork and that kept the game enjoyable to the end. Thanks also to all players for their contributions, but especially to England, Germany and Russia who gave me the best interactions.
Congratulations to Mike and Sean for their part in this draw.
So... How was it from my point of view.
As France it was clear that I would have to deal with the eternal E-F-G triangle. The first German player was somewhat flaky and not interested in this issue at all. He was hell-bent on destroying Russia for some obscure reason. I played on this and encouraged Russia to kill him in return, whilst plotting with England. Matt was a very good ally and we clicked quickly and came up with a plan to take out the German. The outcome of this was the German drop out. When Frank joined the game I remained determined to work with England to remove Germany and I remember telling Frank this. I was also poised to attack Italy, who had said virtually nothing to me throughout the game. However, at this point Matt got very greedy and advanced a plan that would give him 4 sc very quickly with me gaining nothing. I couldn't let this happen so worked a stab with German support. Matt was caught completely cold and I even scammed him with a not particularly honourable follow up whereby he disbanded a very annoying army that had retreated to Picardy. I gave up on the plan to attack Italy to focus my attack on England and I guess I was lucky that Brian was so focused on Turkey. This gave the space to throw a great many fleets northward.
Frank and I worked well together and gradually pushed England back and then when the right time came I went for the German centres too. This was a big gamble as together Frank and Matt were a formidable force to contemplate taking on. I think I judged it just right though, particularly as I had the help of Sean. Sean played a great game here and after a really poor start ended up holding the balance of power. He wielded this to great effect and I am happy to say I had his support for a lot of the middle portion of the game. His disruption of G-E operations in Scandinavia really helped me a lot.
It became clear at the start of the last game year that I was not going to be able to force a solo win, although up to that point I had very high hopes. Throughout the game R and T had been skirmishing and did not appear to have much of a working relationship and too many of the Turkish units were fleets. However at the end Russia and Turkey formed a good alliance (Russia saw my final stab coming a mile off) and Italy just folded rather pathetically. Italian actions really annoyed me as the Italian centres were just handed over to Turkey without any fight at all. Turkey grew at an alarming rate (finally getting some armies into play) and that was that. The way Italy played the last 2 years turned an interesting game into a stone dead draw. NMRs are always annoying but when coupled with play that is so ill-considered really wrecks a game.
Overall, DC302 was one of the good games- I will remember it fondly.

Sure you want to play out the next two years or so?
Whichever force you take off, your line springs a hole, and I''ll leap on it.I don't need to get to Rome: Greece and 2 more will do. Most fun if Douglas and I try to make those two the French ones rather than Italian, so your line could even hold and you would still lose. And publicly vote NO to the 3-way.  I'll vote in favor if Greece is included.

Allen

>>> Benjamin Hester <screwtape777(at)gmail.com> 5/27/2010 6:02 PM >>>
Word of the day is: Fail.  RP printed the word *Fails* in this
adjudication more than you'd see in a whole day on failblog.com.  The
curse of the fail struck indiscriminately - Romania, Bulgaria, Greece,
Serbia, and the Ottomans all failed at something or another that they
tried.  Better luck next season.  That leaves Austria - who has the
one retreat order needed for this season, and Italy, who caused said
retreat.  On to the history blurb, at the site of the fiercest
fighting this season: Tirana.

Tirana before the First World War was one of the great bastions of
Islam in Europe.  No Ottoman territory in Europe embraced the culture
and religion of their Turkish overlords more than Tirana.  This
favored status led to regional prominence for Tirana under the Ottoman
reign, though the city slipped into decline as the Ottoman hold over
the region waned.  Independence (and communism) brought even greater
disaster for Tirana and Albania as a whole, which is struggling even
today to emerge and assume its place as a European capital.

***NEXT DEADLINE: I would really like to see Allen's retreat by
tomorrow, though the deadline will have to actually be Tuesday, 1700
EST.  If we *do* get that retreat broadcast before tomorrow, then the
Fall 1867 deadline will be Thursday, June 3rd, at 1700 EST.  If not,
then I will extend the deadline accordingly.

***RETREAT DUE:  Army Venezia may retreat to Trent, Bologna, or OTB.

***DRAW PROPOSAL:  A 3-way BRS draw has been proposed.  Please include
your votes on that proposal with your next set of orders.

***PLAYERS:

Kind thanks for the reply Matthew. Mike Sims actually replied to me privately and pointed out an old forum thread that showed how to overcome the issues I was having. My Mac appeared to have it properly installed and loaded when in fact it was not yet fully installed as an application. The pointers also helped me figure out how to add new variants which I may not have been able to determine without it.

I am glad to be up and running. Smile

PC I think. It's a emachine with Windows XP.
The new forum look - sunchung   (May 27, 2010, 11:23 pm)
I think having the summary of the message also confuses things a bit. You only get a glimpse of the topic, and sometimes things can meander in a thread. My 2 cents (and by the way, I really appreciate the thoughts and efforts in improving the site) is if there's an infrequent visitor to the site, then they don't quite know what people are responding to.

If you want to include the summary of the topic, and have it display on the landing page, then why not the first post of that thread? And then if you showed what the number of responses are to that topic, then you can see which are the "hot topics" currently on the site.

Lastly, I think the other thing is I think the font may be too small...

Notice this, too...
With the concept of only the most recent post in a thread being shown, it is too easy to never see the older ones, unless you show them all.

E.g. I just posted 3 messages in this thread. But when I go to the home page now, my posts about the colors and the arrangement will never get seen, unless someone happens to deliberately go into that thread and read it intentionally.

By listing all the messages, yeah, this thread does appear to dominate Help & Suggestions today, but isn't that appropriate if it's really that active? If ppl want to see older inactive threads, you can scroll down and see them in the "Threads in this Topic" section.

Just brainstorming...

The new forum look - sunchung   (May 27, 2010, 11:17 pm)
I think a single line per topic, how many postings, and the date of the last post makes sense.

In terms of threaded versus flat (I think that's the term) I realize it's a personal preference. It's just that it's sometimes hard to follow the conversation if it splits out. Where as a flat structure makes sure that the conversation is a single one... There's a website that I've seen that actually has both options. If you go to www.dpreview.com and go to the "forum section" and then click on one of the topics, there's a toggle button at the top that allows you to switch the view.

Ok, so that is something we can change... I clicked thru how you said, and yes, "Variants vs Standard" fills approx 40% of the messages on the 1st page of the Community forum. So what would you rather see here, "Variants vs Standard" have one line? One line with an indicator of how many replies it had? Sort it by date of last post in the topic, I presume, right?

This comes down to taste. Some forums, I've seen it where popular posts will indeed fill your general view. On others, you just have one line per thread.

Try this...
Go into like you described, then click on "Variants vs Standard" (any one of them). Read the message if you like. Then scroll down. Toward the bottom, you see two columns...

1st column is an indented tree of the current thread, showing who all replied to who.

2nd column has all threads in the Community Forum. I presume a list like this column is how you'd prefer to see the initial list? This gives you a grand overview of every thread that has been posted in Community, but very little feel for "what's being talked about, today".

That's what the other view was designed to show you. Today, these issues are hot... sort of thing.

Thoughts?

dc224 W19 - The Prelude to the Roaring Twenties - garry.bledsoe   (May 27, 2010, 10:55 pm)
Well, for all of the chatter, we should see an interesting Spring. We have the following action for Winter:

Trolls Build an A in Niflheim and a F in Kahvi

Rogues Build an A in Ashan and a F in Julianthes

Pirates Build a F in the Neverwood

Faeries Build a F in Ella

Ogres Remove A in Fitzgibbon

It would seem that my need to add commentary is dwindling...the Mikes have more than made up for my poor attempts at entertainment. Magic missile? Come on that's funny.

Shameless plug - remember your Elven friends and vote yes for the DIAS + Elves! (sounds like a vitamin)

Seriously...remember that Spring 20 is June 1st and that you need to vote yea or nea to the DIAS.

Garry

I think post volume matters. Traditionally DC has a very LOW post volume outside of the games themselves. Thus, if you only show the most recent single post of n topics you are going to have a small group of recent things and then a bunch of stale ones. If we assume the forums will remain lightly used into the foreseeable future, what we have now seems right.

On the other hand, in an active forum with lots of posts and diversity, it is far better to simply show the last post on each topic as Sun is mentioning.

Beyond that it is just personal preference. I'm not sure what mine is I suppose it changes on context. It sounds like Sun's is the single post/many topics. Both ways are valid in some absolute sense.

It would take some testing. The key is lots of contrast; the optimal is near-white on near-black or vice-versa for readability, but you don't need to be that pure. Given the aesthetic that you've established here I might suggest making the grey darker, maybe quite a bit darker, and get the font as close to white without breaking your overall colour palette as possible. That should do it. The only thing to be aware of then is whether or not those changes clash with other font/backgrounds elsewhere on the site so it no longer seems coherent.

DC289: End of Game - JeffreyK   (May 27, 2010, 9:27 pm)
I agree with Mark on this one - I thought we had a decent chance at controlling Turkey about a year or so ago when I was advancing on the Med and Austria was almost out - then Russia teamed up with Turkey and turned against Germany.  Not that I'm blaming you, John... well, ok I am. Smile  After that, I was pretty sure it was only a matter of time before Turkey would gobble up enough to win...

But very enjoyable to play!
