SV: DC 312 End of Game - hurup (May 06, 2010, 2:56 pm) |
Greetings from the Sultan.
I had the fortune of finding a kindred spirit to the north, which
more or less ended Austria’s existence. Austria had Italy for an ally,
but he saw the light after having fended off, and then there was only one way,
west. I am a bit surprised Alan/England bought the draw so soon; after all he
might have had at least 2 more years before withdrawing to his homelands, but
as a wise chessplayer could see – the end would come ….at the end J
Thanks for a nice and sober game; I really enjoyed it.

Emne: DC 312 End of Game
Hey all,
Peace reigns across Europe today as the world leaders sign an accord ending
hostilities. I'm honestly a bit suprised the draw passed so relatively early in
the game, so I've checked and rechecked, but it appears I have a yes vote from
every surviving player. The motion carries. Congratulations to Russia, Italy,
and Turkey, the members of the 3 way draw!
I'd love to see End of Game statements from all the players. I'll comment
myself after everyone has had time to get their EoG's in. Congrats again
everyone, especially RIT!

Youngstown Anyone? (Variants) FuzzyLogic May 07, 11:36 am |
Wow.
The Youngstown game is the most popular of the many Diplomacy variants.
That's quite a statement. I'd like to know where the writer of that article came up w that. It's certainly not as popular (2 games) as say Ancient Med (6 games) or Colonial (8 games) in terms of activity here at dc.
The original Youngstown variant was pretty pathetic. The rendering for Realpolitik was choppy, with hard to understand off-board locations. A couple years back tho it was redone, and the new one is actually quite nice. I would say it's really good since the redo.
In my opinion, the desire for it comes from the two most popular games, Standard and Colonial. It simply bridges the gap between the two. |
Youngstown Anyone? (Variants) Kenshi777 May 07, 01:54 pm |
i should probably shut my mouth right now so as not to be perceived as
arrogant or offensive
but i can't
so...
Youngstown was okay - for its time. The variant design community has
come a long way since then however. The explosion of online groups in
the late 90s caused a sort of rebirth of the Diplomacy hobby, and
dramatically increased the opportunities for variant designers to
collaborate and refine their games.
Even the name Youngstown reflects this trend. The variant was
designed by a Dip community in Ohio that at the time still primarily
played face-to-face. Today, Diplomacy variants are subjected to a
truly global court of public opinion, one that expects much higher
standards of balance and aesthetics out of a variant. And rightly so.
Nothing is more annoying than drawing France in Colonial and knowing
the odds of even scraping out a survival are against you, or trying to
make sense of
Youngstown's off-board regions while looking at the unusual blob that
is supposed to represent Asia.
I have many fond memories of working with Don Hessong to playtest his
early versions of Ancient Med, and working with David Cohen to refine
Sengoku back in 2000. Out of these early partnerships, the DVWorkshop
was born, and though that group has certainly passed its heyday in
favor of gaming community groups like this one, the current group of
successful variant designers still collaborate extensively. Case in
point - Oliver Auth's recent coding of SengokuRev5 and South American
Supremacy for webDiplomacy, and Mario Huys' and Manus Hand's coding of
Sengoku Rev5 for the DPjudge. During those processes, all of them
contributed valuable advice obtained through playtesting.
I don't claim to be the authoritative voice in variant design, or that
mine are the best around. In fact, my favorite variants *aren't* my
own. Those honors go to Ancient Med, with up-and-coming variants like
Known World 901 and WW2-1931 deserving honorable mention. Nor do I
mean to be overly critical of Youngstown - just saying it needs a
facelift, and to be subjected to the same painful process of playtest
and revision that say, Ancient Med (finalized on Version 9) did.

All,
I was myself very surprised not to see more than one order, and in a normal game I would have reminded everyone that the orders were due, and held on the adjudication.
However, this is the Winter Blitz, with its standard deadlines, and I think that everyone should be aware of the rules by now. I've always kept to the same deadlines (although I might be an hour late sometimes) so when the game is due should be no surprise to anyone. The deadline has been published both in the mail I've sent out to everyone and at the Diplomatic Corp site.
Last week was an unfortunate accident in the normal schedule. This was due to the fact that I became sick. I don't think I've been unclear with when the deadlines are, nor why the adjudication was late. Things like that happen, and had I not been able to do the adjudication Garry would have had to step in and do the adjudication. The end result might have been that the spring and summer turn might have been moved a day as well, but in the end we would have fallen back to the same schedule.
There is no problem with sending in preliminaries immediately when the adjudication is sent out.

Hey everyone,
You are all probably wondering why I have been so slow lately, and to tell you the truth, I don't know. I'm really sorry about it though. For some reason I keep forgetting when I set deadlines and what season I'm on, and thought I had already sent this out and was waiting for winter adjustments. My mind is going crazy. So again, sorry about that, that autumn was way longer than it needed to be.
Here are the orders and winter statuses:

Hi Everyone -
Just a quick update. I had my medical procedure Tuesday - 6 hours under general anesthetics - really knocked me out. I was discharged from the hospital yesterday. Now we have to wait to see the results.
Thanks for all your good wishes.

As France I got off to a very poor start, and things went downhill from there. Neither England nor Germany was on for a Triple, and both seemed to have their minds made up early about working together. I made a few mistakes, allowing England into Eng for one, then a beautiful own goal when I ordered Build Army Mar instead of Par!
However I hung on long enough to convince England and Germany we could all work together against R/I/T. But without any assurances from either of them that they would allow me survive I had to pull the plug and take my chances that a grateful RIT might let me do just that, and so it came to pass!
Many thanks for a good game guys, see you all around again sometime,

Austria was a tough draw after my first round pick of England that ended in a 2-way victory - things did get off to a good start, but I just couldn't get Turkey and Russia to fight one another fast enough. I tried every trick in the book, begging, bargaining, threatening, and got some movement, but not nearly enough.
The "master diplomat" compliment's very flattering, but unfortunately I am quite "dead" in this one.
Italy's defection wasn't much of a surprise given the way things were shaping up - what was really frustrating was Germany's failure to capitalize on early gains in sweden and the opportunity to help Italy and I take Warsaw/fight off the Russians. I couldn't get him over the recation to the unit in Tyrolia and focused on the big picture - how Austria and Germany's interests are really intertwined. Very frustrating.
Good game, fellas, and thanks for the opportunity. Clearly I won't win this tournament, but I think the first round 2-way and the points here aren't a bad showing.

I too am a little surprised the EOG proposal passed this early, but am glad it has.
Well done to all and thank you to Poul and Charles for a successful game.
When I discovered that I was Russia I was not pleased. Yes, it begins the game with 4 units but also seems to attract attention from 4 other bordering countries.
I began trying to make contact with as many potential allies/enemies as possible. England and Germany had a plan to divide Scandinavia evenly and then move our units elsewhere. Easier for them then for me as my opening northern fleet is locked in the Baltic region. Peace with Germany was important as an Anglo-Saxon Alliance normally means Austria is involved and Russia makes a quick exit. Thankfully, England and Germany had their eyes on France. Plus, peace with those 2 means I can focus my attention (and units) in the Balkans area.
The leader of Austria proved to be a master diplomat. Placed in the most difficult position on the map, he convinced no one to attack him. For some reason, Turkey (Poul) and I clicked fairly easily. We ended up on the same page regarding Austria -- that he must be removed -- and the quicker the better as England and Germany would soon conquer France, move towards us and become unstopable.
I always suspected that Germany and England would work together until they were the only major powers and then somehow stab the other going for a solo win. So I didn't want to be caught flat-footed, but I didn't really want to provoke either of them as well. It was a precarious line to walk in the northern part of my empire.
The key to victory was convicing Italy that Austria was on the way to defeat, England/Germany were on their way to victory just west of him and that he would soon have to worry about the English entering the Mediterranean Sea and taking him over. When Italy decided to change sides (ala real life), I knew we had a chance ... if I could maintain a fleet in the north and occupy as many English fleets as possible -- until the Italians and Turks rushed their armies up to the German front.
Charles (Italy) helped the French hold back the English and then took advantage of the situation to ensure the English would not have an easy time soaking up French supply centers and entering the Mediterranean Sea.
Turkey proved to be the perfect ally. He worked with me to destroy my Black Sea fleet so that it can be repositioned as an army in Moscow to battle the stabbing Germans. I could have stabbed Turkey (Poul). Turkey could have stabbed me. The trust that existed between Russia and Turkey was the key ingredient to holding back the Germans and winning the game.
Thx for the fun and a good game, John.

DC 298 Fall 1917 Adjucation - untitled36 (May 06, 2010, 9:37 am) |
Most of the action this turn revolves around the continuing dance between Russia and Italy. The two are fairly well matched, and they merely trade centers. However, Russia does gain a build from france. So I need a retreat from France (Edi can go to Nth or Cly), and then a french disband and a russian build.
Thanks all!

DC 298 Fall 1917 Adjucation (Winter Blitz) untitled36 May 13, 08:17 am |
Hey all,
The FIR failed. So the war rolls into another year. And the net center total remains the same for all players. This could be a long one, folks! (or longer, I guess!). Russia still sits a mere two centers from the win, but those Italian units behind the lines will likely cause all kinds of problems for the Russians.
So I need two retreats (Italian A Vie can retreat to Gal or otb, and French A Mun can retreat to Boh, Ruh, or otb). Assuming no OTB retreats, we have NO builds needed. So I'll shoot out a quick update tomorrow (if both retreats are marked final, possibly even before). THen after that I'll see ya on Monday!

Hey All,

will have 48 hours before I seek a replacement. To be clear, ANYONE
that wants to update their orders can do so between now and when I
start the adjudication.

Congratulations to the victors -
Austria was a tough draw after my first round pick of England that ended in a 2-way victory - things did get off to a good start, but I just couldn't get Turkey and Russia to fight one another fast enough.

Thanks to John for his GM'ing of this game and for staying cool when I wasn't. Nice job done John!
Many thanks for a good game guys, see you all around again sometime,
Joe

Thanks for GMing John! And this is the first tournament I've played with DipCorps, indeed only the 5th game I think. The group dynamic is quite good, some serious negotiators in the corps. I think I'm pretty good tactically, but the intrigue is top caliber here. Two three ways draws for me, so I can't complain. I'm surprised this one didn't go a bit longer, but there weren't many strategic options left.
Speaking of strategy, mine was not too complicated. France offered a non-aggression so I took it. In my opinion italy is usually better off with an AI in the early going so I went with that. My moves started off with a sort of Lepanto, which never seems to work for me. Nor did it here.
Austria was collapsing so I did what I had to do and was expecting to be the next victim of RT. However I think that concern over a rapid English advancement led them see value in the Italian forces. I signed on and they proved to be good allies, coordinating very well. The only other point I should comment on is my grab of Marseilles. Nothing against Joe, but I was sort of the jr partner with RT and really wanted to get a bit stronger. the opportunity was there and France realistically continued to work with us.
Thanks to all for an interesting game,
Charlie

Anthony was right to be afraid. My initial plan was to ally with England and Austria and fight France and Russia.
I didn't like it when Austria orchestrated the Italian army into Tyrolia to move against Russia. I had armies doing nothing and they could have marched eastwards and reach the front much easier. So, i decided to attack Austria together with Russia.
When Russia demanded Vienna, i began attacking him, because i feared being destroyed by the Russian army afterwards.
I was a bit confused about the interplay between Russia, Turkey and Italy, but it all seems to be play to distract me from the strength of the RIT cooperation.
Congratulations to the victors! And i am really glad to have ended with 5 centres, given the circumstances.

DC 312 End of Game (Winter Blitz) untitled36 May 11, 08:31 am |
Hey all,
It was great to hear the closing remarks from everyone. It appears looking at the game history that the east started in a AIR alliance vs turkey, which then quickly devolved into the RIT that won the game. In the west England and germany appeared to work fairly well from the beginning, taking down France slowly but surely. The RIT advance was quick, and the level of trust and cooperation allowed the team to advance rapidly. I was suprised, for example, by turkey's ability to walk around all those russian centers in Austria without nabbing them. I'm sure you had russia biting his nails those last couple of turns!
I'm also terribly suprised everyone voted yes on the draw. It seems everyone kind of expected everyone else to vote "no," but no one did. I think this may be due to the tournament scoring, in part. The three way knew they had a good score to end with, and were probably afraid if they waited it might become a 2-way, with them being stabbed by their former partners. The western votes also suprised me, France was clearly happy to pull a survival through this, and I suppose England and Germany could just see the writing on the wall. It was suprising, though, to see Alan conceed when he had the same number of scs as two of the winners, and *more* than the third winner. But again, I think he was cutting his losses and taking his points while he had them.
All in all, a quick, fun game. We had some minor spats over various issues, but I think they all worked themselves out. Good game all!
