dc-316 summer 1906 retreats - coryfucius   (May 04, 2010, 11:23 am)
France sails to MAO, and Turkey confirms that his unit is staying on the board.

Fall 1906 orders will be due Thursday 5/6 at 3pm Central (US) / 21:00 GMT.   Please be aware that my state's legislature is scheduled to adjourn this Friday, so my availability will be spotty this week.  I'll still run the turn, but don't be alarmed if it takes me a while to send confirmations of your orders.  Thanks for your patience.

Hey all,

I'm irrationally saddened that Italy didn't retreat to Bohemia. Not for any strategic or tactical reasons, but for the loss of the rare opportunity to see two units disband by retreating to the same location. How often do you actually see that happen? Oh well, such is life!

In other news, the old favorite, the FIR 3-way draw, is back on the table for another vote. One of you commented that it appears we might get into the time period of WWII before WWI comes to an end! We'll see if everyone decides to end it, or keep fighting the good fight!

Italy:
A Silesia - Prussia

Russia:
A Munich - Bohemia
A Trieste - Budapest

Subject: FLWC: Nomads

Hey all,
We have a new Nomad leader!  Unifying those random wanderers from around the world will now be Jay North - Everyone say "Hi, Jay North".  Word has it he comes from a strong Nomadic background, and has roamed at least two major deserts, three savannahs, and one great plain.  His credentials certainly fit the bill.  Deadline will now be Tuesday, to give our newcomer a chance to orient himself - track the sun, the stars, find an oasis, and well, whatever else Nomads do!
Tuesday, 5/4.  3pm Central.
Enjoy,
-mike

Nomads:  Jay North  jnatdelta(at)yahoo.com

Greetings!

And welcome to this, the three-hundred and third game of Diplomaticcorp Diplomacy.  This game shall henceforth be known as “Furry Little Woodland Creatures”, in honor of the FLWC - standing up for the rights of little (and furry) woodland creatures all throughout the Haven world.  With a strong presence in this game the FLWC will surely keep a watchful eye on the progress.

I’m glad you came out to play this!  I spend a lot of time thinking of Diplomacy variants and how to make them interesting and challenging…  I know most of you - some have been past opponents in complex games, others are running incredibly tough Winter Blitz games, some are regulars that have been playing at dc since the early years… and a few are completely new.  All of you have had at least some sort of good impression on me regarding your diplomatic abilities to be invited to the game!

Who am I?  (aside from some guy that designs mysteriously ominous looking maps?)  Well most of you probly already know me.  But for those who don’t, I’m one of the moderators here at dc, and have been playing Dip for 5 or 6 years.  I got hooked early on making fantasy variants, and this one is by far my greatest concoction.  It took months of work to get it just right so hopefully you find it enjoyable.  I live in Lisle, IL (a small suburb of Chicago) w my wife and 3 little kids… I do network administration and web design work for a living.  (intros are welcome from all – we’re going to be here a while!)

Keep in mind I tend to run a consistent and predictable game.  If I say results are going to be out, chances are they will be so within a short time after the deadline.  Thus, if you don’t get moves in on time you are subject to a typical NMR (no moves received) in which all your units will hold.  These have a funny way of turning the game upside down unpredictably so if you don’t want to find your race suddenly in chaos and regrouping just to stay alive, use prelims.  Use them all the time.  Consistently using prelims is the best Dip skill you can ever learn.  (right after lying, cheating, stealing, plotting, misdirecting, evading, … )

So what are we waiting for?  Who are you playing?  Find out now!
If any of you don’t have a “Location” on the website, feel free to update that (or let me know and I can) – it’s always fun to know where your enemies are playing from).

(DC 324) A Stab in the Dark - Autumn 1901 Results - Corrino   (May 04, 2010, 7:32 am)
Hi Players,

It's a fine morning here in The Hub.  Hope it's nice where you are, too.  Austria has expedited his retreat orders so we can proceed to the next phase.  Those of you who are privileged to see those retreats will see that info in your country reports to be sent out immediately following this message.

Now it is time to post the Supply Center counts for 1901.  This is like publishing the salaries and tax returns of your local public officials.  Who knew he made that much?  He's not doing so well.  Maybe a bad investment?

Enough of my tortured analogy.  The chart:

COUNTRY    SC
Austria     2
England     5
France      3
Germany     4
Italy       5
Russia      7
Turkey      5

==================================================

NEXT DEADLINE:

Winter 1901/Spring 1902 are due Friday, May 7, at 8 pm Eastern time.  If all orders are in and marked Final I may adjudicate earlier.

Reminder that you can only build on your home SC.  It was only the starting turn where you could position your units in other spaces.

NOTES on Retreats:

I received a couple of good questions about retreats that I thought I would share with everyone.

Q:  What happens if austria retreats to a space with a unit already in it? Disband?  My guess then would be disband the fleet and retreat to bul (disbanding) and build 2 armies.  If that happened, would russia see that the retreat fails? Would the rest of the game?

If Austria does not submit a legal retreat, Austria's unit will be disbanded.  That would include all of these scenarios:
1.  retreating to an occupied space
2.  retreating to a space where units bounced the previous season
3.  colliding with another retreating unit (his own or another player's)
4.  an invalid retreat based on the map.  e.g. Retreat A Rumania - Warsaw.
5.  NRR - no retreat received

The opposing player(s) who caused the retreat would also learn of the disband, but not where the unit was ordered to or why the disband happened.  In other words, whether the retreat succeeds or fails, the opponent is told the RESULTS of the retreat only.  Austria, himself, would be given the exact reason in the case where the retreat failed.

For example, England dislodging a German army from Kiel might be told "The German army has retreated to Denmark" or "The German army has disbanded."  In the latter case, he wouldn't know whether the disband was ordered by the German or was the result of one of the situations noted above.

Hi all,

I???m
back. My internet issues are fixed in the end and I have a new and fast
connection.

I???m
not surprised to see that my country is eliminated of course J but I???m surprised to see the bad atmosphere which
prevails in this game.

I
just read the past adjudications and I saw that there were many NMRs (including
mine of course) in quite each turn which distort the good running of the game
and falsify the results of the whole tournament.

It???s
a pity too to see messages like the latest where people insult themselves. It???s
a game. Don???t forget that!

It???s
unfortunate to be stabbed of course and one don???t like that (even me) but
it???s not a reason to utter insults.

Maybe
seeing some of you in the WB11???

Regards,

Jluc.

Objet : Re: DC317; Spring and
Summer 1906 Results

Hello all,

Since the message was sent to everyone, I wanted to take a brief second to
respond in front of everyone.

I have been the recipient of quite a few stabs and have orchestrated a few
myself. I feel bad every time I screw someone over, and kick myself for being
so stupid when I myself am the victim. When it comes down to it, however, this
is why I play Diplomacy. The pieces are a backdrop to the personalities, and
tactics are subordinate to tact, in my mind. This is exactly why I do not play
gunboat variants;  I enjoy matching wits with other players. I know that
everyone is playing to win themselves. I find the tension created while
simultaneously working with others and for yourself engaging. I am sorry,
Scott, for lying to you and that I stabbed you, but I am not sorry that this is
how the game is made. Maybe I am just another idiot, maybe this specific move might
not work out the best, but I made a judgment call and went with it. Maybe no
real tactician/strategist would do such a move, but a diplomat might.

I do not want to enter into an argument with you. I did not attack you for any
personal reasons, and hope that you can look past my moves in this game when
judging me as a player, or indeed as a person. Good luck,

- Greg

behind

us, but that isn't likely.

Anyway - this is what I sent to Italy and, yeah, it really is how I see it.

Yup - believe it or not, that is as I expected.  Thought I'd take
the chance

anyway.  This is one reason I only play gunboat now.  People have no

honor in this game and that's quite the shame.  Sure stabs are part of the

game but they lack creativity and don't show any real tactical prowess,

No strategy.  ANY idiot can stab but a truly good strategist/tactician

plays the GAME and doesn't let the game play him.

So POR/SPA and MAR fall to you.  Enjoy your victory - ANY idiot

could have done what you did.  ANY.

GM???s remarks:

Not sure it would have made much of a difference; but, Turkey NMR???s
again.

With no viable retreat, Turkey???s army in Constantinople is
disbanded.  And, with only one viable retreat, Germanys retreat was
performed automatically.  Doug, if you would have preferred the unit was
retreated off-the-board, please let me know before tomorrow evening so that I
can post a correction.

Dear Players,

Thanks to all of you for submitting orders. It is really appreciated considering my GMing gaffs of recent turns.

The Frankish Fleet in the Gulf of Lyon has been dislodged by combined Italian and Turkish Naval power and must retreat to the South Coast of Spain or OTB. Default is Spa (sc) and will be posted in 24 hours unless I hear otherwise Smile

Fall 1904 Orders shall be due next next Tuesday 11th May at 12noon GMT. Please send prelims as I cannot guarantee reminders will be sent.

If any of you are still interested, there now follows a synopsised version of recent events concerning the missed MPC builds. This is attached more for Mike Sims info than anything else Very Happy

Best
D

1)
After receiving various notes concerning Italys NBR, I send out apology for failing to include Italys builds on the map or the email.

I've double-checked and had received no build orders from Italy.

Annoyingly, I had failed to include the adjustments on the email - and also even more annoyingly, I did not include Italy's adjusments on the map. Nor did I send a reminder

2)
Michael sends opinion against awarding builds. My judgment: Apparently partisan but legit. argument.

I vote no on the builds. It will benefit me but it was his responsibility to question your lack of a build. In fact I wrote him an email trying to negotiate a non build in TUN, so he knew he had a build (I can provide that email if you want to see it). I know this serves me but he knew and didn't get it done. Enough said

3)
Dirk says yes to builds!!!

4)
Dirk then says no to builds and accuses Italy and Austria of RL alliance

My judgment: completely contradictory opinion = Discounted Very Happy

5)
Michael continues partisan but legitimate argument

6)
Mike (Numpty) votes in favour of Italys builds.
Apparently partisan. No argument offered.

7)
Vaguely Off-topic discussion between Me, Michael and Dirk for several mails concerning Italy and Austria.

Cool
David votes for builds - cites same reasons as I offered for allowing builds. ie. 'Spirit of Game'

9)
I receive mail from Mike Sims from DipCorps wondering why I am considering allowing the Italy builds

10)
I decide - despite my map errors possibly playing a part in Italys confusion and despite the affect on the game - that MPC will NOT receive the builds: Ultimate & Defining reason: He STILL has not sent any!

In conclusion - there are various reasons already discussed why it could be decided that Italy should or should not have been allowed the builds (Fleets? ;D). I have had to chalk this one up to experience and have duly sacrificed my next game to the Curse of the Flying Dutchman. One thing is for sure. I have decided that:

A) I shall not GM more than one game at a time in the future, if more than one of them is a hand-adjudicated map:- The room for human error is too great and time for corrections is greatly reduced.

B) I shall never again bother asking the players opinions on an in-game issue. Very Happy

The reason that Mike Sims apparently got involved was due to the complaint about Italy / Austria's real-life alliance.

As far as I am aware:
Austria, England & Russia were all drafted into the game from Redscape, whether or not they also already play on DipCorps. Turkey is a personal friend of mine. Germany and Italy both signed up through DipCorps with no apparent redscape connection.

I think this suggests that there is no obvious evidence of RL collusion between Italy and Austria. If anyone knows any different, as both Dirk and Michael seem to assert - I suggest you talk directly to Mike Sims at DipCorps about it. I want no further discussion about it in this game.

Good luck,

- Greg

DC317; Spring and Summer 1906 Results - txurce   (May 03, 2010, 11:57 pm)
Standing here on the sidelines, I would say that most stabs have little to do with tactical prowess. They may or may not show strategic prowess. The only thing that's certain about stabs is that the person stabbed made a tactical error by not guarding his centers, probably due to a diplomatic miscalculation.

I've only played one gunboat game in my life, and promptly manipulated the press option to circumvent it. If I want a real tactical challenge, there are many better options than Diplomacy. Good tactics can make the difference in a given game, but like Greg said, it's a game for diplomats. With larger variants, it's also a game for strategists.

(DC 324) A Stab in the Dark - Fall 1901 Results - Corrino   (May 03, 2010, 10:31 pm)
Players,

Well, I was just about to go to bed so I checked my Inbox one last time, and lo and behold, there was the last "Final" authorization.  So I propped up my eyelids and dove into it.  Please check carefully!

News of the Season:

> Our two eastern hot spots remain the same, but this time Austria is on the wrong side of both transactions, losing Trieste to Italy and Rumania to the Russo-Turkish team.  Did  he say team?  Yes, he did.

> In the west, A Burgundy, which went for Munich last time, changes course and goes for Belgium, only to find a German army already ensconced therein.

> Every country shows at least one unit except for England.  Where are those crafty Brits, anyway?  That's what this game is all
about, isn't it?

=========================================
Orders resolved:

Austria:
A Rumania Supports * (*Dislodged*)
F Trieste - Venice (*Dislodged*)

England:

France:
A Burgundy - Belgium (*Fails*)

Germany:
A Belgium Supports * (*Cut*)

Italy:
F Adriatic Sea Supports A Venice - Trieste
A Venice - Trieste

Russia:
A Sevastopol - Rumania

Turkey:
F Black Sea Supports A Sevastopol - Rumania

============================================

Retreats needed:

Austria
A Rumania
F Trieste

Retreats to be submitted within 24 hours please.  Retreats are reported to all countries which participated in the dislodgement.  Hence, A Rumania's retreat will be reported to Russia and Turkey.  F Trieste's retreat will be reported to Italy.

Reminder that Austria is NOT informed of the available spaces for retreat.  He must submit his orders blind.

============================================

Next
Phase:

After retreats have been posted, I will send out a new public report containing the SC counts for each nation.

I recommend that you wait until you receive this report before submitting your Winter/Spring orders, even if you know the Austria retreats do not affect you.

Cheers,
Chris

DC317; Spring and Summer 1906 Results - MDemagogue   (May 03, 2010, 10:17 pm)
I guess I'm confused as to how a significant gain in territory by one party is not proof of tactical prowess.  I don't know about you, but if I had the opportunity to stab and increase my territory by 50% in one fell swoop, I would be hard pressed not to do it.

All I will say at this point in time is that I do NOT, for one second,
think this is anything personal about what happened.  It is, after all,
a game.

Hello all,

Since the message was sent to everyone, I wanted to take a brief second to respond in front of everyone.

I have been the recipient of quite a few stabs and have orchestrated a few myself. I feel bad every time I screw someone over, and kick myself for being so stupid when I myself am the victim. When it comes down to it, however, this is why I play Diplomacy. The pieces are a backdrop to the personalities, and tactics are subordinate to tact, in my mind. This is exactly why I do not play gunboat variants;  I enjoy matching wits with other players. I know that everyone is playing to win themselves. I find the tension created while simultaneously working with others and for yourself engaging. I am sorry, Scott, for lying to you and that I stabbed you, but I am not sorry that this is how the game is made. Maybe I am just another idiot, maybe this specific move might not work out the best, but I made a judgment call and went
with it. Maybe no real tactician/strategist would do such a move, but a diplomat might.

I do not want to enter into an argument with you. I did not attack you for any personal reasons, and hope that you can look past my moves in this game when judging me as a player, or indeed as a person. Good luck,

- Greg

Not sure why any of you would care - but this is the message I just sent to
Italy.  Please bear in mind that he will jump to 12 and will more than likely
turn on Russia next.  I'd like to think Germany and I could put things behind
us, but that isn't likely.

Anyway - this is what I sent to Italy and, yeah, it really is how I see it.

Yup - believe it or not, that is as I expected.  Thought I'd take
the chance
anyway.  This is one reason I only play gunboat now.
People have no
honor in this game and that's quite the shame.  Sure
stabs are part of the
game but they lack creativity and don't show
any real tactical prowess,
No strategy.  ANY idiot can stab but a
truly good strategist/tactician
plays the GAME and doesn't let the
game play him.

So POR/SPA and MAR fall to you.  Enjoy your
victory - ANY idiot
could have done what you did.  ANY.

Maybe I am just another idiot, maybe this specific move might not work out the best, but I made a judgment call and went with it. Maybe no real tactician/strategist would do such a move, but a diplomat might.

I do not want to enter into an argument with you. I did not attack you for any personal reasons, and hope that you can look past my moves in this game when judging me as a player, or indeed as a person. Good luck,

- Greg

Good luck,

- Greg

Hi all,

I’m
back. My internet issues are fixed in the end and I have a new and fast
connection.

I’m
not surprised to see that my country is eliminated of course J but I’m surprised to see the bad atmosphere which
prevails in this game.

I
just read the past adjudications and I saw that there were many NMRs (including
mine of course) in quite each turn which distort the good running of the game
and falsify the results of the whole tournament.

It’s
a pity too to see messages like the latest where people insult themselves. It’s
a game. Don’t forget that!
It’s
unfortunate to be stabbed of course and one don’t like that (even me) but
it’s not a reason to utter insults.

Maybe
seeing some of you in the WB11…

Hi all,

I???m

DC-322 Deadline Delay - TheWhiteWolf   (May 03, 2010, 6:28 pm)
Guys,  Frank let me know before the fall deadline that he was going on vacation this past weekend, and expected to have internet access. Since I haven't heard from him since then, I'm going to assume he's run into an issue with his connection. I'm delaying 24 hours (to tomorrow) to see if I get any word from him. If I haven't heard from him by tomorrow evening, I'll reassess the situation and try to decide where to go from there.

DC319: Spring 1937 Moves - charlesf   (May 03, 2010, 6:25 pm)

Hallo
zusammen,

it appears that a second Polish-Soviet War is afoot
since the Poles invaded the Ukraine whilst attacking the newly established
Latvian SSR despite having supported the Soviet claim to
that territory only last year! In light of the USSR's manifest willingness
to support Polish interests in Sweden, one can only imagine Uncle Joe's dismay
regarding this latest turn of events. Perhaps he shall even consider this part
of a wider capitalist conspiracy since Soviet-Turkish relations appear to have
equally broken down.

More promising news for the socialist camp hails from the Iberian
peninsula. As Franco's forces reach the Mediterranean shore following a thrust
into Catalonia, a Republican counter-offensive has netted the Popular Front
government Madrid. At the same time, the great powers may well have abandoned a
policy of non-intervention in the Spanish Civil War. The Regia Marina has
assumed stations off Valencia, while the Western powers look to possibly
influence events in Northern Spain.

Events in Africa have also taken a new turn as the Royal Navy has seized
Tripoli. As for the Reich, it has made strengthened its hand in South-East
European affairs. Add to all those developments the infringement of the Danish,
Dutch and Greek sovereignity and you have about as eventful a Spring '37 as one
might wish for.

Further below, you shall find the first non-GM press in this game! Smile While
the "Pic of the Day" images were previously chosen by yours truly, this time
over the Spanish Republicans have some revolutionary artwork on offer. I mean to
always have one period image attached to every adjucation, player submissions
taking precedence over mine.

On a less happy note, I'm afraid that Nigs' orders were late for this
season and he thus used up one of his two six-hour grace periods. Too bad that
the first safeguard of early prelims didn't avoid this matter, though I must say
you guys generally do a decent job in getting those preliminary orders
in.

Anyway, the Fall 1937
Moves prelims are due NLT 6PM CET on Saturday, 8 May, the final
deadline being presently planned for 10 May. Though I may possibly extend
the final deadline, should a player's travels not allow him to sufficient time
to negotiate. But for now, the deadline's set for the 10th.

Liebe Grüsse,

Charles

Sirs, it is deplorable that the brutal Turk has been allowed to seize
