DC305 - Spring 1901 Moves / Orders - ignite107   (Mar 08, 2010, 7:06 pm)
And the quest for world domination has begun.  What will come of the Italians who have begun to make progress into the Austrian lands?  Will the spaghetti makers be able to hold up against catapults of Wiener Schnitznel?  Meanwhile, the French will celebrate everyone retreating from their every move.  Who knew the French could be so scary?  Everyone made progress, well mostly everyone.  Half the Russian army was stopped by a single Turkish fleet.  That only leaves the Germans and the English.  Maybe they are working together for a world filled with Sauerkraut English Muffin sandwiches, perhaps they will solidify the deal over tea and bratwurst in Mother Russia?

So many questions, I guess well have to wait until Fall when the true allegiances really show themselves.

Yeah, I agree with making it all anonymous and qualitative. I'm just throwing ideas out there. It would be nice though, as a GM, to gain feedback after a game to improve or whatever.

dc291 spring 1909 results! - coryfucius   (Mar 08, 2010, 3:56 pm)
First of all, the draw proposal fails, so we continue for at least one more year. Fortunately, there is some movement again, as Russia succeeds in taking Munich this time. English and Turkish fleets each sail towards the waters around the Iberian, solidifying their respective positions at what looks to be a stalemate line. Elsewhere, everyone seems to be content to stand still.

There is one summer retreat due:
The Austrian army in Munich may retreat to Bohemia, Burgundy, Ruhr, Tyrolia, or OTB.

Laurence, since there are multiple retreat options, I won't auto-retreat that army - your summer 1909 retreat is due tomorrow, Tuesday 3/9 at 3pm Central (US) / 21:00 GMT.

Blitzers,The spring rolls into high summer, and we find ourselves with a French Fleet that needs to retreat.

Draw between Austria, France and Russia, survival for Germany.
The votes are due with the Fall movement (since only France needs to submit orders for the summer).

French F Ionian Sea can retreat to Tunis, Naples, Apulia, Albania or OTB.

DC 293: Priceless Russian Treasure Discovered - AceRimmer   (Mar 08, 2010, 3:22 pm)
Mistakenly attached to the backside of Repin's "Ivan the Terrible and His Son Ivan: November 16, 1581" (a truly great Russian work of art)... we have discovered the lost Russian orders. [They were accidentally not sent to me, but they did go to the orders confirmation address. This may lead to a revision of the Blitz rules, as the rules do not clearly address this situation. In the future, failure to correctly designate the GM's address may disqualify orders, even if sent to the confirmation address]. Anyhow... it's a new adjudication! As you might guess, England is probably not going to be happy.

Because there is no Russian retreat, there is no need for a Retreats phase. The Turkish fleet in Western Med still retreats to North Africa. The English army in Belgium is disbanded. Fall orders are due on Thursday.

Finally, a note to Mr. Morse: the Russian army in St. Petersburg does not exist. However, your Finnish army received no orders, so it stands.

My apologies... in a situation eerily similar to Chris' wrong Adam, I sent this re-adjudication to the wrong 'Blitz' in my address list. Chris is right that there was a re-adjudication. I am sorry this didn't go out to all of you yesterday! But as there are no retreats due today, perhaps all will be okay.

1648 091010: Fall 1654 Moves - charlesf   (Mar 08, 2010, 2:55 pm)
Hallo zusammen,

as you know, I'm keeping track of the number of times Swabia flips. Well, here's our sixth flip! Not bad for the few years we've been playing, particularly considering the by design congested circumstances in the Holy Roman Empire.

It's quite a different picture in the Med, where the Spaniards and Turks aren't gaining a single inch on each other. Must confess that I'd love to see my changes I've implemented since starting this game loosening up matters down there. But perhaps a future diplomatic realignment will yet do the trick...?

But hey, what's Swabia and the Med when probably all eyes are on how things shall shake out round the Baltic? Spring left us wondering whether the rzeczpospolita might hold on to its conquests. And then there was the matter of the itinerant Polish army over in the Empire: Would it have to surrender to surrounding forces or yet proudly fly the White Eagle's banner in far distant lands?

Well, we have our answers! Courland and Riga shall be covered in pink before long. But so will Copenhagen as they marched into Jutland with Army of Flanders hotly in pursuit. No Polish winged-hussars vs. Castillian tercios showdown just yet! Sounds bad-ass doesn't it?

Oh, before I forget: If anyone wishes to amend his Keppler Award predictions, winter seasons are the time to do it. Smile

As Mike shall be travelling and without any internet access from the 10th until the 20th, I've granted an extension of the spring deadline until the 22nd. Furthermore, to accomodate Mike's departure, I've scheduled the coming winter season for tomorrow, Tuesday, 6PM CET. I hope that works for everyone. Just want to make sure Mike gets to see and possibly react to the winter adjucation before leaving.

Liebe Grüsse,

Charles

Re: Suggestions - AceRimmer   (Mar 08, 2010, 1:59 pm)
I like the feedback idea. Giving ideas to a GM on how to run a game better is definitely worthwhile. I think the club could have a role in this by promoting player feedback. Perhaps by providing a generic feedback form to GMs, which the GMs could then forward to players at the end of a game (but who'd design the form?). Or the club could contribute by having an online form (even anonymous drop box) where players are encouraged to leave comments for the GM. But I think the feedback should be strictly for the GM to read and learn from.

On numerical ratings, I agree with Mike... only more so. I wouldn't even want games rated. It is also my own experience that 1-to-5 ratings are minimally helpful. Numbers give a score but no practical advice for improvement. On evaluations, I always skip the numbers and read written comments where available. Again: I'd emphasize feedback over rating.

If there is a concern that a GM is bad -- really bad -- then I imagine players should notify the club Moderators. Let them deal with it.

ACD236/DC288: Balkans1860Rev1 Names Map - Kenshi777   (Mar 08, 2010, 1:47 pm)
I have seen multiple prelims come in with unknown abbreviations
recently. Please see the attached map as a reference. First three
letters is usually safe, but not always! (i.e. Burgas/Burgas Bay,
Salzburg/Salonika.

Also - remember that the bridges in the map also indicate sea borders
- i.e. a fleet in Sea of Marmara does not border the same provinces
that a fleet in Thermaic Gulf does. This goes for all bridges on the
map.

Thanks!

Russian solo? Not today.
Russo-Turkish draw? Maybe next week.
French orders? Right here, right now.
Russian orders? None.

Throw in an unlikely (and ultimately disrupted) attempt to convoy A Constantinople - Spain (while armies in Albania and Tunis just twiddle thumbs). Yeah, it's kind of an odd season. Perhaps normalcy will be restored on Thursday with the Fall 1909 orders.

But first! Russia must retreat! And Turkey auto-retreats!

Russian army Burgundy may retreat to Gascony, Picardy, or off the board.
Turkish fleet Western Mediterranean retreats to North Africa.

The Day of Reckoning for F1909 is on Thursday as normal. However, for the Fighting Illini, there's Day of Reckoning in the form of a repeat date with Wisconsin on Friday... Bruce Weber's boys had better bring more than they brought against the same squad yesterday, or it's relegation to the NIT.

Dc 299: Autumn/Winter 1908 Adjudication - PeaceWithHonor   (Mar 08, 2010, 12:37 pm)
" 8 years down and only one person eliminated? "

I understand that Alan Callahamer, the inventor of Diplomacy (and someone I had the honor to meet at Weasel Moot II in Chicago) was known to have said that in a perfectly played game of diplomacy by perfect players, no power would ever be eliminated and the game would never end but by 7-way draw.

I happen to think that this greatest of games was not designed so perfectly as to make such an outcome feasible even among perfect players, but I get his point.

So in that regard, we are playing a pretty good game, and for the reasons i think he was driving at -- the alliances have shifted quickly in response to any player's seeming good fortune -- a reality I observe only too well of late.

Re: suggestions - FuzzyLogic   (Mar 08, 2010, 10:55 am)
I think I lean toward #2 personally. #1 has the potential to be discouraging and personal. GM's volunteer their time, so if a GM is new and trying it out, the last thing he would need is to get some flame ratings permanently attached to his profile for what might be a rocky first game.

Rating the game on the other hand is a bit more disconnected, and then you could have a "games list by most enjoyed game" sort of thing. This would allow GMs to possibly have a bad game, but then on the next game get better and have some really great games.

The drawback to #2 is it would open up the door for GMs to lobby their players to give them great ratings so that they could top this or that chart.

As we're working on a new message board system to ditch this clunky phpbb stuff, features like this could be tied in nicely w the site going forward... so if you have ideas bring'em up!

-mike

Hey everyone,

I was just thinking about some additional features that could be added to the site. Just wanted to see what people thought of these.

1) I think it would be cool to have a "rate your GM" or some kind of survey thing after a game is finished where people can give feedback to their GM and the site on ways the GM can make the game run better, and then keep track of each GM's scores or something to see who the best GMs are.

2) another survey, "rate your game experience" I think this would be helpful so the moderators and GMs can see how new players or veterans are enjoying their game experiences. They can write how much negotiating went on, or whatever they want.

Again, I just think these would be good additions to the site to give people more feedback on how games are running. Thanks.

Blitzers,

So the spring comes around once again. This time with fewer powers as both England and Turkey were eliminated last winter. I'm not going to analyse what's going on, but I think that a lot of diplomacy has been happening in the background to accomplish the situation that we are faced with in the spring.

I shall be treating NMRs with the utmost seriousness in this game and hope that an excellent game so far will not be unbalanced by any player failing to submit orders in a timely manner.

DC 298 Spring 1909 adjucation - untitled36   (Mar 08, 2010, 7:37 am)
Hey all,
The biggest news this time around is Turkey losing both(!) armies, making him a strictly naval force for the moment. The ramafications of this could signal a complete upset in the balance of power in the east, while the two titans in the west remain mostly deadlocked, though the Kiel does fall to the french for the moment.
Retreat-wise, the two turkish armies had no where to retreat, and thus were disbanded. English Army Kiel could only retreat to Denmark, so I auto-adjucated the move. Rob, if you'd prefer OTB, let me know by tomorrow at 13:00 GMT. Otherwise we move on to fall on thursday at 13:00 GMT.

1926 091119: EOG Report - charlesf   (Mar 08, 2010, 7:32 am)

Charles, your comments on the strengths of the various powers has me wanting to play this variant again, right away, to see it all play out. Smile

Dirk, You're unlikely to ever have a chance to play 1926 in its present form. I've been lately reworking my 1936 variant (after not having touched it for five years or so).

Many of the ideas I've now worked into 1936 would also apply to its sister variant, 1926. So were I ever to run another 1926 game, it'd be substantially different from what you know.

To clarify some of my comments, I never fully "got" the travel between Britain and the Suez. Once I was already down a diplomatic path that resulted in my abandoning the region I started asking Charles about it and he gave me the information on how it worked. But it's absence in the rules, at least so far as I was able to tell or find, kept it invisible from me. Even after Charles' informing me of how it worked, lacking an easy way to "check up on" the nuance of the rule kind of kept that strategy from seeming viable to me. Making this more explicit in the rules would not seem to have a down side.

The map is entirely explicit and ought to be taken at face-value.

That being said, checking over the dipwiki rules entry, I see it still refers to an "African Coastal Waters" sea space, which has been done away with in last map revision. This obsolete map clarification certainly needs amending. I suppose an extra comment on ATO wrapping around Africa might be added, as much as the map already shows that being the case. Can't hurt.

I do want to echo Darryl's comments about the lack of territory designations on the map. I expect, given this is only one of three of Charles' games I've played, that I've spent more time on DipWiki pouring over the official maps than any other Internet site over the last year! This was at times not at all convenient, particularly when working on a small laptop screen and struggling to reconcile actual board situation with the labels. The counterbalance is that Charles' maps are quite lovely without the designations. Still, the usability would be increased by having at least a version that shows the board positions and the territory designations. It would just make these excellent variants even better!

Not on my watch! :p I don't want any further clutter getting in the way. Nor do I consider it at all necessary.

I recommend players do the following:

1) Print out the map with space labels. You might want to laminate it to ensure longevity and ease in handling. Keep it around as a handy reference. (Hey, you could also make a mousepad out of it!)

2) Take some time to familiarise yourself with the space names and labels.

3) Test your own geography knowledge. Take a blank map (i.e. without labels) and label each space. When you've done your best, make note of those space names you still have to learn. You might want to repeat this geography quiz later. Rather than doing cross-word puzzles, sudoku and such, do the 1926 quiz! Smile

Point 1 is easy and adresses the matter entirely, I should think. Point 3 is certainly very optional, but might soon have you as fluent in space names as I am.

As a final comment, I've never heard myself called a "conservative" game player before. Certainly no insult taken, but it did make me cock my head and ask aloud, "really?!" I suspect it is more a product of my dislike of stabbing and preference for draws than the way in which I push the pieces around the board. I've been getting more stomach for it recently though and may just "go for it" next time...

You do stab. But I haven't yet seen you engage in a risky stab against as strong a power. If you merely aim for a draw, that might suffice. But if you actually wish to win, risks and tough challenges will have to be taken on. But hey, not like I follow my own advice always myself and am generally not that successful a player. No wonder the bulk of my Diplomacy time is spent designing/running my variants rather than playing. Smile

Cheers,

Charles
