DC-244 Deadline Reminder - TheWhiteWolf   (Jul 29, 2009, 11:13 am)
Folks,
We have just under 50 hours until the deadline. I'm giving extra notice because we've been on hold for so long. I need four sets of orders - if you don't have an order receipt, you are one of the four. I also have yet to receive a draw vote from one player, who I will email separately now.

Hey everyone,
The Spring 1459 deadline is in less than 19 hours, and I'm still missing orders from most of you. Don't make me NMR over half the board! Surprised) But seriously, get 'em in, or risk it.

DC 260: S1903 & S1903R Adjudications - AceRimmer   (Jul 29, 2009, 8:41 am)
Personally, I still cannot wrap my brain around the idea of Moscow as a coastal space. Really? Moscow?!? But the Persians make good use of its port, parking an entire armada there and (one fears) fatally weakening the center of the Russian position. What with the Siberian yetis invading Ural, the Czar had better start scrounging around in his Chest of Desperate Measures.
China is ousted from Chongqing, but I'm not sure his position is any worse. Indeed, he may survive into 1904.
Elsewhere, there is a fair amount of repositioning and some curious thrust and parry along the Indian-Persian border. Oh! for a Cyrus the Great to establish an Achaemenid Empire or an Akbar to constitute a New Mughal Empire. It would simplify things.
There are three retreats. One (F Ural) is a disband. The other two have only one viable retreat, so I am adjudicating:

Chinese Army Chongqing - Hong Kong
Indian Fleet Pakistan - Arabian Sea

Fall 1904 will be next Tuesday at 10:00 CST / 15:00 GMT. But spare yourselves the worry and submit prelims now.

Charles, the crusades maps are not "yet another map variant".

They are made specifically for royale play, and they were designed by someone who previously had, out of the first 7 royale games, played 3 and gm'ed 2.

I have the impression you analyze the Crusades maps and pure map variants. You have to look at them as royale map variants. I will not list here all the special conditions that make a royale game different. If you consider them, then they are among the best.

Royale games tend to be longer in real-time span (twice more turns per year); at the same time, after just a few game years (decades, in the case) the players are already playing a mid-to-endgame situation. The map must be small. The powers must be small. The neutral SCs must be few.

I don't know of any other map suited to play the clergy papacy rules. And, having learned potential flaws of royale, the clergy and the papacy rules were made to improve playability, specially regarding the acceleration of the shift of alliances. It avoid early loss of interest by players who find themselves unable to change course of things in the short-term, as they are used to do in any Diplomacy game.

Usually, the crowd get very interested in the Crusades map. In any case, if you point some maps that can be used to play a royale game with its most developed rules, great. In the end, among the options given, the players can chose what map they prefer. THe game is for the player, not a property of the GM.

Each Royale game ever played by the core developers of the rules (John Pitre, Jeff Ladd, Tommy Larsson) presented rules evolution from the previous one. It would be a pity everything experience taught them not-to-do get repeated, to be learned again. We must restart from the point they were, and this is why the only thing I define as potential gm of a royale game is that it must include Clergy rules, from Priest to Pope. Do you want to play?

Mark you have your GM's mixed up. And no I won't let you solo in the other game because there we have a game.

Info on this game is slightly skewed, but the victors write the history.

I thought this game contains all of the elements that makes Dip played remotely bad. No need to rehash the past; but stupid variant, I won't play it again, not that I was really playing it for the last month,

It's 2am and I can't sleep so I might as well get this sent out now and try in vain to get some sleep before the morning, so here we go.

I started off the game thinking it would end in a draw of some sort, due to the relatively large number of starting units, and the ability of these units to defend positions in depth.  I was proven wrong due to the inability of people (myself and Nick excluded) to understand the objective of the game.

For those of you who don't know, the objective of the game is to get a simple majority of supply centers.  As such, the objective of every player should be to attempt to secure these centers, and correspondingly, to stop people who are very clearly in position to solo from getting these centers.  I assumed, of course, that anyone who is dedicated to the game of diplomacy enough to play it over email over a span of several months would have this elementary understanding of how the game works down pat.

That said, Michael, I'd really appreciate your help soloing in DC 225.  I'm England in that game, and I'm reasonably close to soloing.  I figure since you helped England solo in this game that for the sake of consistency, you ought to help me solo in that game.  I'll even let you survive, because I don't need all of your centers to solo.  I'll be expecting to be supported into Munich in the fall, thanks in advance.

Nick summed up the gameplay rather accurately, except the refusal on my part to ally with him.  What he proposed was that I yield two of my remaining supply centers to him.  This was when he was around 22 or 23 centers, and I didn't really want him to solo, so I opted not to.  Little did I know that Germany and Turkey would fall all over themselves to help him solo.

To close, I'd like to thank Andy for running this game, and for running other games on this site as well.  You do good work, and I enjoy the variants that you are willing to run.  I'd also like to thank Jeff, Matthew, and Ilyas for taking over as replacement players as they, and others like them, allow games to run relatively smoothly when players opt out of the game.

[quote:4f3ff3a4a7] Hi all,

It is a pleasure to come out victorious of this bloody conflict. I want to say a few words to explain my vision of the game and perhaps explain my actions to some.
When the game started, I made a protection pact with Russia and tried to gain an alliance with France or Germany. The result was that I ended up the odd man out of the Franco-German alliance. France and I agreed as gentlemen to declare a war on each other the old fashion way... no backstabs. I then manoeuvred to obtain the support of Germany and Italy. Within about two turns France was only a shadow of its former self. He made peace with me and swore fealty in exchange for my protection. Meanwhile Germany and Russia had been waring, Austria was falling and Italy had attacked Turkey.
When Germany became too much of a threat I allied myself with Russia against him. At the same time Italy stroke Germany as well. As a result Germany lost much ground and appealed to find a protector. I responded and in much the same way France became my vassal, so did Germany. To protect my new vassal and use him as an advantage, we attacked Russia. I had also been talking Turkey into doing so which resulted in the fall of Russia rather quickly. But before Russia fell, Germany and Turkey betrayed me. Of course Italy was also facing Germany and Turkey but was not willing to ally with me a third time as I was always the one to rip the rewards. By that time however I had the strength to face my enemies alone.
Shortly before the end Turkey negotiated with me. Turkey was willing to kneel if I assured him that I would destroy Italy before my solo.
As a result only two players survived the game after my solo, Turkey and Germany.

I want to thank all of you for making the game so pleasant. It truely was a game of diplomacy.
I hope to play with you soon again.

Cheers,

Nick

Folks,
Thanks to all of you for getting your orders in well in advance of the deadline. Sorry this is coming out so late - I let my mind slip today.
According to the DipWiki, the solo victory criteria for this variant is 29 SCs, which England has not only achieved, but surpassed this year. Although RealPolitik doesn't seem to recognize this, I am going with the rules laid out for the variant, and calling this game and England solo.
Congratulations to Nick Cherrier for the win, and thank you all for playing. I'd especially like to thank Matt Kelly, Jeffrey Clay, and Ilyas Erzik for stepping in as replacements when we needed them so badly. Of course, Nick, Michael Stroz, and Mark Utterbach also deserve accolades for sticking with this game from beginning to end - thank you for staying true to the goals of the game and the community, gentlemen.
End of Game (EOG) statements would be appreciated, but I won't harass anyone who doesn't wish to provide one. I look forward to seeing you all in future games, whether I GM for you, you GM for me, or we face off across a board. Thanks again, everyone.

dc268 GM - game - notasb   (Jul 29, 2009, 7:59 am)
I still have not heard from OZ/ Warren. I'm surprised because in the past Warren has always been a reliable player. He still has an hour before the 24 hours officially ends but should I not hear from him I will begin seeking a replacement player today and will adjust the deadline as necessary. I will update you as needed.

The player who asked for an extension still has not gotten his orders in. I do not NMR in the 1st year so I've sent him a note asking for his orders. I will adjudicate as soon as his orders are received.

After this year I will adjicate with NMRs, I will not send individual reminder notes.

Hey Cristiano, I think any good variant set between say 500 and 1789 would lend itself well to Diplomacy Royale. Papacy rules though perhaps not for the entire time-span.

I myself am however not all that convinced that the Crusades variant is all that polished.

Re: dc265 ~ European Onion - ccr   (Jul 29, 2009, 5:33 am)
Hi! I have just asked to join as Italy.

And I already have a comment.

Austrian F retreating from Greece can retreat to Albania or Ionian Sea. The GM retreated it to the Ionian, if Austria would prefer otherwise, please notify me ASAP!

I ask you not to do this in the future in any games you GM. When a player have options, the GM cannot assume his choices. Cannot decide the player do what makes more sense. Cannot decide something is obvious.

As Italy, I argue to Austria that given Turk and Russian moves were anti-Austria, and given Italy is facing french southern drive, then Italy and Austria must to be ally on the defense, and if Austria don't do that then Italy will play suicide against Austria. And that if Austria retreats to Alb, then Italy will move to ION just next, and help against Greece, if by the time the french will have already realized he must be more careful about the lots of idle german armies before committing his units far away from home.

Also note that GM interference is not right because it goes against your own house rules, section 8, and it hurts another topic of the same rules, section 5.

8. If I can skip a retreat phase because all retreating units only have 1 possible retreat, I will order the retreats and skip to the next phase.

Not the case. You must allow the 24 hours to receive a valid retreat order.

5. An NMR on a retreat phase means the unit disbands.

And after the 24 hours, if the unit remain unordered, it is disbanded. How do you want to apply rule 5, if you give orders for the players?

(...) Diplomacy Royale (a rules variant which fleshes out dynastic politics - fascinating stuff, if you ask me. Best combined with a medieval or early modern map variant)

Hi Charles and all. I have just registered to DC and of course the first exploration was on my favorite topic - variants (check to the left - joined: today; posts: the first).

And it happens this whole month I have been wondering where is the best place to start a game of Diplomacy Royale, which I want to GM. Read again - i want to GM. I am experienced at it. I took over for Tommy Larsson the GMing of game "Heir", when he left the hobby, and later in 2001 I GMed the first and only known game with the optional Papacy rules.

I plan to GM a new Diplomacy Royale game with Papacy Rules, which of course include Clergy Rules.

The suggested maps are the two Crusades 1200 maps made by Tommy, of which version 1.2 is known, and version 1.4 only exists in my computer. These may be played respectively by 18 (or 9 major-minor double power) players and 14 players (or 7 major-minor double power).

These suggested maps, and, more importantly, the only COMPLETE set of Diplomacy Royale rules can be found here: http://aefgirt.atspace.com/

I say this is the only complete rules because, when Tommy decided to become a professional bridge player, then I became the final depositary of the amended rules, detailing which are the additional rules, and with an Errata on one FAQ.

DC-227 Fall 1922 Adjudication - MDemagogue   (Jul 29, 2009, 2:04 am)
It's 2am and I can't sleep so I might as well get this sent out now and try in vain to get some sleep before the morning, so here we go.

I started off the game thinking it would end in a draw of some sort, due to the relatively large number of starting units, and the ability of these units to defend positions in depth.  I was proven wrong due to the inability of people (myself and Nick excluded) to understand the objective of the game.

Folks,
Thanks to all of you for getting your orders in well in advance of the deadline.

DC 212 - Fall 1914 - So Near, So Far - former.trout   (Jul 29, 2009, 12:18 am)
Heya all,

Well - with the deadline and date confusion out of the way we can move on into Fall 1914.  Sometimes I really am a bear of little brains.  =)

But its the age-old story of the last yard being the hardest to cross, as Russia puts up the good fight and puts up the wall.  Austria makes it close, but can't seal the deal this turn.  However, with Russia forced to disband will next year be different?  Or can England somehow pick up the slack?

We have two proposals that have been tabled for everyone's consideration.  One is an Austrian solo proposal, the other a proposal for a 2-way English/Austrian draw.  Your yay or nay votes for both of these options would be appreciated, with the Spring 1915 turn.  Please remember that failing to vote counts as a 'no'.

So we play on!  Winter 1914 adjustments are owed by England, Austria and Russia.  Deadline will be set for Thursday, July 30th (11:59 PM GMT).  And I think that date matches the day.  =)

Cheers all!

DC-227 Fall 1922 Adjudication - zeclient   (Jul 29, 2009, 12:13 am)
Hi all,

Cheers,

Nick

DC255 Spring 1907 Results - MattTheLesser   (Jul 29, 2009, 12:09 am)
Another spring full of positioning, as Yellow sails closer to Blue's
boot, Dark armies continue to march west, and Blue beefs up his
defensive position. There were a couple attacks on centers, but neither
successful as Red repels Black's assault on Snow and Yellow thwarts
Red's attempt to sneak into Magenta.

We have no retreats, so we progress directly to Fall 1907, which will be
due this coming Monday, August 3, at 9 pm eastern. However, if you are
sure of your orders be sure to mark them final, as 4 sets of final
orders and an early adjudication are entirely possible!

DC-227 Fall 1922 Adjudication (dc227) MDemagogue Jul 29, 02:04 am

Hi all,

Michael

DC267 Winter 2010 Results! - MattTheLesser   (Jul 28, 2009, 9:05 pm)
Our first winter sees an increase in the action, with everyone earning
at least one build. Russia and the USA keep fairly quiet and each pick
up two close-to-home neutrals, but the Atlantic is much less peaceful,
with the Canadians and Danes keeping each other out of the Queen
Elizabeth Islands and Norway thwarting Denmark's attempt to sneak into Oslo.

There are no retreats, so we move directly to Winter 2010 adjustments,
which will be due this Thursday, July 30, at 9 pm eastern. Builds due
are listed below the adjudication. Per my house rules, all adjustments
are considered final unless specifically marked otherwise, so if
everyone sends their adjustments in quickly then I can adjudicate
early. However, I do consider conditional adjustments (that some of you
sent with your winter movement orders) preliminary, and I will only use
those if I do not hear from you by the deadline.

Also a heads up that I'm currently in the process of programming the
variant for RealPolitik, so that should be incorporated very soon!

Matt
