ONE PLAYER'S OPINION

I am hoping this is not the case, but should Italy not turn
in a disband
order this winter, what happens?

1. It is my understanding that his Eastern Mediterranean
Fleet would be
the default disband. Is that correct?

2. Would a NBR put him in Civil Disorder, thus leaving his
unit in place
for the next year? Would we pause to fill the (extremely)
lost position?
Would he be allowed to submit orders in the Spring even if
he doesn't
submit his disband order?

I am concerned about this for it does affect the game
somewhat. Should no
orders be given for the Italians, Austria will occupy
Naples in the Spring
and be able to support the defense in the fall. Should an
active and
concerned Italian player still submit orders, Italy will
still very likely
be lost by years end, but he could confound things for
Austria (most
likely), and possibly France, Turkey, and Russia. (not
counting
indirectly Germany and England.)

Please don't try to read any personal opinion as to
what outcome I would
prefer. I am only trying to ascertain what dynamics I need
to consider.
Having been a GM myself, I know the frustrations of losing
players and the
remaining players needing to adjust to the new dynamic. I
am just trying
to understand the possible outcomes of a possible NBR.

Jimmy, I know we haven't seen eye to eye on much in
this game, but for
the sake of the sport, I encourage you to openly let us
know if you are
still with the game.

Gee, I don't know about that idea.... You know, the
moral dilemma of GM-to-player transition, the potential of
players already having revealed sensitive information to
you, the fact that I signed up to play for Packrat, not
against Packrat... These are important considerations,
especially the last!

Okay folks, Elise is just to loaded down with work at
school.  I'm
not sure why, but they have loaded the kids up pretty good.

I am going to need a replacement for the English player.

Now, I have an idea that might work to make this go a bit
faster but
I have to run it by all of you first.

I am guessing I can get someone to GM and I will take
Elise's place
AFTER this season is adjudicated.  Trout, can you submit
orders for
Elise (England) and then take over as GM and I will take
over as England?
Unless, of course, you want to play England.

Lets see what Trout says so I know what my options are.

DC215 Spring 1904 Results - MattTheLesser   (Dec 10, 2008, 9:52 am)
Sorry for the delay - my games club meeting ran really long last night
thanks to too many rounds of "Race for the Galaxy." Also it turns out
that England sent his orders with his retreat from the Autumn and I just
missed them, so he retains his grace.

On the map, England manages to keep team RG out of Edi, Germany pushes
further into France, and some shifting in the Balkans leaves Austria
with only one home center and Turkey with only his home centers.

The only retreat is for Austria's A Alb and it only has one option, Gre,
which I have ordered. Brian just let me know if you want it OTB. This
pushes us to Fall 1904, which I will set for this coming Monday,
December 15, at 9 pm eastern.

Folks,
Italy is not in Civil Disorder. Italy did not send in a retreat, so therefore the unit was a no move received. I use a program called realpolitik, so when I put the orders in and then commit and resolve those orders. His unit is automatically disbanded due to not retreating. I will be replacing Italy if he does NMR one more time. End of story.

DC224 Late to the Slaughter - Spring 01 Grace Peri... - former.trout   (Dec 10, 2008, 7:34 am)
Heya all,

My apologies but it looks as though our friendly Nomad is still in transition. I've given Heath his 24 hour grace period and we'll extend to this evening at 11:59 PM GMT. Which is roughly 10.5 hours from the sending of this email.

I do have alternatives if orders are still not forthcoming at this time. An unaffiliated party has volunteered to serve and send in random orders for the Nomads - turning the position into an "armed neutral". This person is not involved with the game in any way and would send orders in based solely on the map.

Why the "armed neutral" rather than enlist another player to play out the position? There are two reasons in my mind:
1. I do not wish to delay the first turn any more than necessary - which would have to happen if we sought out another player and gave him time to diplome.
2. I feel that with the first week already gone by, any player stepping into the Nomad position - with their unique starting layout - would be SEVERELY disadvantaged. All of their opponents will have already had over a week to conspire and lay plans that would take quite a lot of work to shift.

My hope is that Heath will send in orders so we can avoid all of this. I do welcome all opinions about the "armed neutral Nomads" if you have them, though.

Cheers,

Trout

Gee, I don't know about that idea.... You know, the moral dilemma of GM-to-player transition, the potential of players already having revealed sensitive information to you, the fact that I signed up to play for Packrat, not against Packrat... These are important considerations, especially the last!

Okay folks, Elise is just to loaded down with work at school. I'm
not sure why, but they have loaded the kids up pretty good.

I am going to need a replacement for the English player.

Now, I have an idea that might work to make this go a bit faster but
I have to run it by all of you first.

I am guessing I can get someone to GM and I will take Elise's place
AFTER this season is adjudicated. Trout, can you submit orders for
Elise (England) and then take over as GM and I will take over as England?
Unless, of course, you want to play England.

Lets see what Trout says so I know what my options are.

DC196 Heroes & Villains - Fall 1908 Revisited - former.trout   (Dec 09, 2008, 4:36 pm)
Heya folks,

Made a couple errors concerning France with the Fall 08 adjudication - my apologies for the oops. France actually ordered to Mid-Atlantic, not the West Med as I inputted. Also - France gains a build as a result of the forced disband in Piedmont.

The corrected adjudication and maps are attached. Deadline for Winter will remain set for tomorrow (11:59 PM GMT).

Just let me know if I was sniffing glue and you spot any further errors. Cheers!

Turkey:

A Smyrna - Ankara (*Bounce*)

Now, the reason Turkeys order failed was that no coast was specified for the Con --> Bul move.

Retreats:

Russian F Sweden can retreat to Finland or Gulf of Bothnia or
Skagerrak.

Deadlines: Lets have that retreat by Dec 11, 20:00 Gmt. If I get a final retreat before that, I will adjudicate early.

For Adjustments, I'd like them by Dec 12, 20:00 Gmt.You may send conditional builds that factors in the Russian retreat (for example, if F Swe retreats to Ska, build F Lon, otherwise build F Lvp).

Adjustments:

Austria: Supp 6 Unit 5 Build 1
England: Supp 6 Unit 4 Build 2
France: Supp 3 Unit 3 Build 0
Germany: Supp 6 Unit 6 Build 0
Italy: Supp 5 Unit 4 Build 1
Russia: Supp 4 Unit 5 Disband 1, If Swe retreats off the board, no Adjustment required
Turkey: Supp 3 Unit 3 Build 0

Other: Get prelims in on time folks, saves all a bit of trouble. As a result of being late, Russia and Turkey have now officially used up their grace period. This means that the next time they Nmr (if any), the turn will be played out regardless. A tip to avoid this: As soon as you get the map out, send in a set of prelims.

And as always, let me know if ya spot any errors!

Have fun!

Hi all,

Late-breaking news on the Baltic Diplomatic front. A 3-way Finnish/Polish/Swedish draw has been proposed. If we have all votes in regarding this by the Winter deadline, I'll announce the result. Otherwise, I'll schedule a deadline for following the Winter turn.

Cheers!

DC191 - Three-Way Draw Proposal - former.trout   (Dec 09, 2008, 11:05 am)

Cheers!

DC191 Study In Baltic - Fall 1911 - Black Peter - former.trout   (Dec 09, 2008, 10:31 am)
The latest news from the Baltic:

Poland continues to have all the answers regarding Malmo - fending off yet another Swedish attack. Yet despite their best efforts, the Poles cannot wrest Konigsburg back from the Finns.

A center changes hands and we battle onwards. Poland removes one, Finland builds one. Deadline for Winter 1911 adjustments will be set for Thursday, December 11th (11:59 PM GMT).

Regarding the deadlines - I'll try to shorten them up a little bit so that they are not week-long. However, there was no consensus reached among you players. We'll do what we can, though - and if I ever receive all four sets of orders marked 'FINAL' then I will adjudicate early. =)

Please let me know if you spot any errors. Cheers!

DC196 Heroes And Villains - Fall 1908 - Sidekicks... - former.trout   (Dec 09, 2008, 9:48 am)
You know, evil comes in many forms, be it a man-eating cow or Joseph Stalin. But you can't let the package hide the pudding. Evil is just plain bad. You don't cotton to it. You gotta smack it on the nose with the rolled up newspaper of goodness. Bad dog! Bad dog!

-------------------

The eastern countries continue their race to the Atlantic - only to find the Germans a few laps ahead of them. Eastern Germany is vacated in favour of Northern France - and the only two arrows on the order map NOT pointing westwards are two French arrows in the south...

Definitely a pretty exciting game-year. One retreat due from Russia as a result - in the frigid waters of the Norwegian Sea. As we're about to break for roughly a week to accomodate player scheduling, I'd like to rope in the retreat with the Winter adjustments. Deadline for both the Early Winter 08 retreats AND the Winter 08 adjustments will be set for tomorrow - Wednesday, December 10th (11:59 PM GMT).

Following that, Spring 1909 orders will be due on Friday, December 19th (11:59 PM GMT).

Just let me know if you spot any errors. Cheers all!

DC205 The Pleiades - Spring 1906 - Follow The Rain... - former.trout   (Dec 09, 2008, 9:27 am)
Hey guys,

Russia looms on the horizon - but as so often happens in this cases - find a rainbow coalition allied against him... However, the alliance comes one step too late for Germany as the Kaiser is forced out of the last Kraut stronghold of Berlin.

That was the only retreat but the German army had only Prussia to fall back to. I took the liberty, Mark, but if OTB is preferred than please just let me know. Otherwise we bring the battle to Fall 1906. Deadline for orders will be set for Monday, December 15th (11:59 PM GMT).

Also - please let me know if there are any holiday scheduling conflicts. It is Christmas time and if we need to adjust the deadlines around everyone's vacation plans than we can easily do so. =)

Cheers everyone!

DC 222 Two Steps To Anarchy - Fall 1901 - The Dani... - former.trout   (Dec 09, 2008, 8:47 am)
The Danish Donut

1 bowl of Swedish donut-dough
1 pinch of Baltic Sea-salt
White Russian frosting

Roll a handful of Swedish dough into a Kaiser-bun
Sprinkle Baltic Sea-salt onto white Russian frosting
Punch a Denmark-sized hole in middle and leave empty

--------------------------------------------------------------------------

Yeah - there are some shenanigans in the north as Russia deftly side-steps the anticipated German bounce in Sweden - leaving Denmark open. Norway, as expected, falls easily to the British who also land their expeditionary force in Belgium. The big story has to be in the south though as the Austrians can't buy a break from their neighbours...

Apologies about not getting the turn out last night. Yours truly was stuck on the highway for four hours on the drive home... Needless to say - the laptop did not even get turned on...

But weather and traffic be damned - we move onwards. Winter 1901 adjustments deadline will be set for Thursday, December 11th (11:59 PM GMT).

Let me know if you spot any errors. Cheers!
