A&E 090205 / DC240: corrections - NickHiggins   (May 16, 2009, 11:30 am)
A&E 090205 / DC240: So Frank is correct on both counts, and I apologize for these errors. First, I attached the wrong set of press, and the correct press makes a lot more sense. Second, he is correct on the rule adjudication. I must admit that I was unaware of that rule, and had programmed my adjudication program incorrectly. Thanks for pointing out this error. For an example of this in the rule book, please look at Diagram 13 on pg 9 of the rules in this link below:

http://www.wizards.com/avalonhill/rules/diplomacy.pdf

Below, I have included the correct British press, and also the corrected adjudication (the change is in bold, with Prussian A Posen - Berlin succeeding), plus I have attached the corrected map.

Correct British Press:

England to Denmark/Norway: David....too much was being leaked. I had to
either trust Turkey, or trust you. When it came down to it, he seemed
to be more genuine about trying to get both partners seeing success. If
I have misjudged your intentions, I will own that.

England to Turkey: Hopefully we just detroyed the French army. If we did, we're in good shape. If we did not, one or the both of may be in trouble.

England to Austria: Did you attack HeW at the right time? You're in great shape if you did.

England to France:
I couldn't work with you and Turkey. You made a nice argument about
being better positioned to help me, but you are also better positioned
to hurt me, and in fact made an effort to do so last season. Best of
luck from here on out.

England to Poland/Saxony: Did you follow me into Berlin? It would be nice for both of us if you did.

England to Russia: Nathan, are you the mysterious anonymous? I can't wait for end-game comments to find out.

England to Peanut Gallery: Gauntlet thrown down. Now let's all see how I can mess it up.

Frank,

Even in the press you maintain your disinformation!  I have to give it to you for Machiavellian manipulation.  lol

Turkey,  I'm sorry you didn't see through Frank's lies to work with us.  We would have been in position to take Portugal had you followed through.

Subject: A&E 090205 / DC240: The Bulldog makes his move?

A&E 090205 / DC240: The Spring 1769 season has been adjudicated.  Clearly the biggest story of the season is that Frank appears to have made his move in going for the solo, taking Mecklenburg from the Danes, and moving his fleets east towards Scandinavia.  You can read his press for more tea leaves in interpreting British intentions.  Meanwhile, there is a Turkish army in Paris, for the first time in history (both real and surely in the history of the A&E variant).  Finally, one of our two remaining neutrals fell, with the Duchy of Courland finally surrendering to Danish advances.

The retreat deadline is over the weekend, let's say Sat night, although I won't adjudicate until Sun morning (or earlier Saturday if I received them).  Retreat orders are needed from Denmark, France, and Prussia.  The Fall 1769 deadline is Thu May 21st.

Press:
England to France:
Mike, you might have been genuine with me. But from what I concluded
from talks with the board, coupled with what happened last season, I
couldn't buy you forgiving and forgetting. If I was incorrect in that
assessment, I am sorry.

England to Peanut Gallery: I'm sacrificing two centers for consolidation. I
can't wait to hear the roars/boos from the gallery over this move.

England
to Turkey and Denmark/Norway: I honored DMZs with both of you. Which
one (or both) of you is going to make me groan at my decision.

A&E 090205 / DC240: We have had two separate requests (France, Turkey) for deadline extensions for one day. Those requests have been granted. I would ask that, if possible (and it seems like it wasn't this time), that players please ask for a deadline extension further in advance than the day of the deadline.

Our new deadline for Spring 1769 is Fri May 15th at 10 pm USA eastern time. Our following deadline for Spring Retreat 1769 (if necessary) will be on Mon May 18th, and then the Fall 1769 will be back to our usual schedule on Thu May 21st.

Thanks, Nick

A&E 090205 / DC240: Game transformation (more... - NickHiggins   (May 08, 2009, 12:27 am)
A&E 090205 / DC240: The Fall 1768 season has been adjudicated. First, allow me to apologize for the late adjudication. I severely sprained my ankle playing soccer tonight, and I've spent the last couple hours on my bed with my ankle iced and elevated, and with my head a little dizzy from pain and then painkillers. I debated waiting until tomorrow morning to adjudicate, but this season is too juicy to wait.

Where to begin...! The most earth-shaking event has to be the apparent breakup of the western triumverate of Britain, France, and Turkey. H.M. Frank decided he had waited long enough and seized Brest, while Roi Mike ejected the Turks from al-Andalus. The Habsburgs managed to hold onto their gain in Two Sicilies, and fend off a Turkish-Polish attack in Vienna. The final result in the Med is that Turkey is down two supply centers, Austria is up one, and the alliances are scrambled now that the British-French marriage appears to have ended in broken crockery and divorce. Turkey has a very tough choice to make with the disbands, as their hordes are on the rampage in eastern Europe, but the Sultan cannot afford to surrender ground in the Med either, with half of the Turkish SCs located in the Maghreb.

Turning to the east, Prussia has the dubious accomplishment of having all 3 of their armies dislodged in the same turn. Prussia still hangs on to their SC in Warsaw, and will face an interesting decision regarding which unit to retain. Although the Tsar lost Abo, he surely was willing to sacrifice his Finnish sanctuary in order to return to his capital in Moscow. Most impressive is the Danes, who seemed to be facing a potential catastrophe after the spring, and not only averted disaster but actually netted 1 SC gain this year, despite losing Berlin to the Brits. Speaking of the Redcoats, Frank quietly had a huge year, with 3 SC gains scattered across Europe that have pushed him into the clear #1 spot.

Retreat orders are needed from Prussia and Turkey. They are due Fri May 8th. Winter adjustment orders are needed by Mon May 11th.

We have two sets of press before the adjudication.

Press #1 (Peanut Gallery)
"The Peanut Gallery to Britain: Frank, playing for a shared victory with Dave Denmark & Norway?
How would you sleep at night? A shared win? PLAYING for a shared win? I
will be truly disappointed in you, Frank, if this game ends up in a
some antiseptic draw.
Is the day where people play to win the
game now past? Am I in an ever-shrinking pool of players who would
understand if I were stabbed by another in the search of SOLO victory?
Maybe I just need to stick with playing chess on-line. There, draws
actually mean something."

Press #2 (British)
England to France: Sorry Mike.

A&E 090205 / DC240: Brits in Berlin - NickHiggins   (Apr 30, 2009, 9:04 pm)
A&E 090205 / DC240: The unrelenting high drama of this fantastic game continues with a British stab of Denmark-Norway. The Danish possessions in the Prussian homeland have been occupied, and Konge David (King David) has some difficult tactical decisions to make this fall. In a further setback, the Danish bid to conquer Koenigsberg fell short, with a Polish-Saxon army bouncing there also.

In the Mediterranean, the Austrian fleet recaptured Two Sicilies, one season after spurning the support of the army in the Papal States. It remains to seen whether the Archduke can hold it down in the critical fall season. The Alpine battleline moved slightly east, with Spain surrendering Marseilles to a British army (which apparently will now turn it over to a French army). In Iberia, the problematic Austrian unit was destroyed, which can be viewed in Vienna as both a curse (that army was a nice tactical piece tying down many units in the back lines) and a blessing (Austria can rebuild a unit of their choice... if Austria gets a build).

It will be very interesting to see how this plays out in the "money" Fall season, when the gains of spring are either consolidated, expanded on, or reversed. The deadline for the 1768 Spring Retreat season is Fri May 1st, with the only order needed from Turkey for the fleet in Two Sicilies. The following deadline for the 1768 Fall season is Thu May 7th.

Before the adjudication, the entertaining press war continues, with the new twist of a contribution from the Peanut Gallery (thanks!).

Press #1 (Peanut Gallery)
The Peanut Gallery to Britain: The Mike Matusow of Diplomacy? You, Frank? After watching the Apprentice with Donald Trump, I would have pegged you as the mischevious and manipulative Annie Duke. But at least you don't have Joan Rivers out to get you.

Press #2 (British)
England to France: Mike, I don't expect we made Marseilles, but if we did, I will return it to French control as soon as possible.

England to Denmark/Norway: I had to attack somewhere, David. I wouldn't be surprised if you stopped me, or if you even attacked Han. haha...it was good while it lasted, but I think we both knew the day would come where it had to come to blows.

England to Anonymous: One to add to your list.

England to Peanut Gallery: Was this the moment? Should I have played for the shared victory with Denmark/Norway?

Press #3 (Anonymous)>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>The notion that it's Austria talking to you this way is certainly flattering. Were I ever so big, I would be making deep gashes in you about now. Face facts, Frank: you've got this whole game wired. Everyone's jumping when you say so. But it'll come crashing down on you ... if they wise up in time. If they're all chumps, well, you'll win. Which basically means that you can only beat chumps, champ.

A&E 090205 / DC240: Winter 1767 season adjudic... - NickHiggins   (Apr 27, 2009, 9:17 pm)
A&E 090205 / DC240: The Winter 1767 season has been adjudicated, with a lot of armies built. The next deadline for Spring 1768 is Thursday April 30th.

Before the adjudication, we have some press:

PRESS (British)
England to anonymous: Let's recap. Stabbed France. That was noted in my press. Happen to be working with France now, and the government there seems to feel that England is being fair in our negotiations. StabbedAustria. Yes....you are correct there. I wonder why I overlooked that in my previous posting. Perhaps it was related to the fact that Austria (it would be so much easier to write "you" there, but since you're anonymous, I can't do that) was growing unchecked at that time, and I felt that if I did not act immediately, Austria would overrun Turkey and then be very difficult to stop. "Stabbed Spain". This is quite a reach. When one finds out that a certain country has been subtlely working against him and his allies for several seasons, I don't feel calling an attack on that country a stab. But....we are all entitled to our own opinions. By the way, one might think by glancing at the board that Austria should have bigger issues than caring about what England is doing. If Austria keeps its focus all-consuming on England for too long, Austrian civilians might be learning a new language (and it won't be English, either).

England to peanut gallery: No silly changes of pace by me for several seasons now. Who's reading each season's orders with incredulousness? For you poker players out there, maybe I am the Mike Matusow of Diplomacy. Wait long enough, and I'll blow up....sure as the sun comes up.

A&E 090205 / DC240: Turko-Danish Delight - NickHiggins   (Apr 24, 2009, 10:40 pm)
A&E 090205 / DC240: The Fall 1767 season has been adjudicated, resulting in jubilation on the streets of Copenhagen and Istanbul, with each player earning multiple builds this winter. This marks the second straight successful campaign for the Danes, who grabbed the sure SC in St Petersburg, and then managed to sneak in Breslau as well. Turkey has 3 builds, with 2 taken at Austrian expense in Barcelona and Two Sicilies, and the third gain in the Crimea. With those gains, Turkey moves into a tie for the lead, along with Great Britain at 8 SCs.

There is less joy in Moscow, which fell to Prussia, such that the Tsar's subjects were forced to follow him north to the last remaining Russian redoubt in Finland. Turning to Austria, is it possible for the same player to stab you in back-to-back seasons? Apparently, as Austria has twice submitted orders indicating a Habsburg-Ottoman partnership, but twice Turkish orders have been hostile to Vienna. This was doubly painful because Austria wasted the support of the Papal States to re-take Two Sicilies. Nonetheless, this season was not disastrous for Austria, who dislodged the Polish invaders from Vienna while covering the possible Polish retreat to Venice. Despite an opportunity for the British/French forces, Austria lost no ground on the battlefront stretching from Dresden to Switzerland, although the destruction of their ally Spain's army in Languedoc is a significant setback due to the inability of Spain to rebuild that unit.

Only one retreat order is needed, from Poland & Saxony, and I will adjudicate as soon as I receive it. The following deadlines are Winter 1767 on Mon Apr 27th and Spring 1768 on Thu Apr 30th.

Before the adjudication, we have two dueling sets of entertaining press between the British and their anonymous critic.

PRESS #1 (British)
Press from England:
Pushy: Austrian Diplomacy
Push-back: When neighboring countries get so tired of pushy diplomacy that they start acting against it.

It is a day for the friends of England to shine in the sun. We congratulate Turkey for a wonderful stab. We congratulate Denmark/Norway on rising to a position of power after being at two centers for so long. We congratulate France from coming back from the brink of death. We look forward to celebrating next year with a big French-run gala in Marseilles.

Of course, it will get bloody between us friends at some point in time. But best to battle for the spoils between friends, right?

Press #2 (Anonymous)
Read 'em and weep:

Spring 1767
England to Anonymous: Nice definitions. Only real problem is that I’ve “stabbed” one person in this game, and it’s the Frenchman that I’m currently supporting. It’s a pretty far stretch to say I stabbed Spain when I knew he was actively working against us.
Spring 1766
England to Spain: You might be surprised (shocked) at these moves, but the English government felt they were necessary. In short, the consensus feeling was that you were more concerned with getting centers immediately than focusing on the task at hand...
Fall 1764
London to Austria: Jorge, you're either stunned, not very surpised, angry, or you were looking for it (or told about it)...
Spring 1763England to France: Sorry Mike. I had to pick a target, and truth is, your neighbors wrote and coordinated a lot more...

A&E 090205 / DC240: Austrian apocalypse - NickHiggins   (Apr 16, 2009, 11:42 pm)
A&E 090205 / DC240: The Spring 1767 season has been adjudicated. In a stunning stab, the combined forces of Turkey and Poland & Saxony have occupied 3 Habsburg supply centers. This news is surely devastating to the Viennese refugees as they flee the capital to more secure locations. On the Franco-Iberian front of that war, the Austrian side suffered another blow, with their army dislodged from Barcelona.

Turning to the north, the new superpower Denmark-Norway has clearly signaled their next target, apparently moving in order of "hotness of local ladies to ravage" from Sweden and now to Russia. Is Poland next? At least Britian is safeSmile The convoy of a Danish army to Karelia should prove troublesome to the protection of the virtue of Russian damsels in the fall.

Overall, this season was a major turning point in the game, and it will be interesting to see where things go from here, as the ascendant coalition has to decide whether to press on and finish off their enemies, or whether to turn on an ally for quicker gains.

There is only one retreat order needed (from Austria), and I will adjudicate as soon as I receive it. The deadline for Fall 1767 is Thu Apr 23rd.

We have two sets of press (Thanks!) before the adjudications:
