1648 091010: Seeking a replacement for Austria - charlesf   (Nov 28, 2009, 6:10 am)
Hi guys,

I've received the following mail of Nick's in response to mine:

"I have honestly thought that I would have the time to do so in the past weeks, but found that I did not when it was too late. I think I should get my personal affairs on a stable footing, and that this should be my priority. I did not want to resign as I thought that would be harmful to the game, but if my non-resigning is also harmful, than perhaps it is best that I do go."

Continued near-gunboating simply presents too great a liability to the game. Since all hope in any improvement on the part of Nick's happens to be gone, I am now seeking a replacement for Austria and putting the game on hold.

I should add that two players who otherwise failed to submit their build orders on time would have suffered the due consequences of doing so. I made the judgement call that in light of the game anyway being on hold, I'd unilaterally postpone the winter adjucation until a replacement is found.

I wish I weren't put in a position in which I have to make these types of decisions since neither course is particularly pleasing.

My hope is that it won't be too long until we're back on track.

Charles

I wish to apologise to all for allowing personal issues to affect the game so directly. I am sorry.

1648 091010: Fall 1651 Moves - CORRECTION - charlesf   (Nov 25, 2009, 6:39 pm)
Guys,

I'm afraid I misclicked while doing the adjucation. Poland did NOT order "A Crimea - Moldavia" as the written orders summary would indicate. I spotted my snafu and corrected the .dpy file and map image accordingly, yet forgot to correct the written orders. I apologise for my absentmindedness and corrected this further below.

I'm afraid I also forgot to remind you that any Keppler predictions can be altered right up to the winter adjucation publication.

Well, I hope that covers it.

Happy Thanksgiving to those on the yonder side of the pond!

Charles

Grüß Gott!

the entire former Danish sphere of influence has now witnessed major changes. The two Northern crowns are now at loggerheads, while the Commonwealth has gained a foothold on the continent. Farther in the East, the Swedens and Poles are engaging in manoeuvre warfare.

French troops now control the entire Po valley, whereas the Sultan finally took the fortress-island of Malta.

Retreats/Adjustments are due on Friday. Denmark's retreat may affect adjustments, so take not that you can condition any of your adjustments on what the Danish army does.

Liebe Grüsse,

Charles

Grüß Gott!
War has now reached the Baltic littoral as Polish forces advance on Sweden's positions. I trust Queen Christine will be prevailed upon not to spend as much time with her French philosopher and look towards the defence of the realm. In other news, the English Navy has for the first time managed to gain the command of the nation's home waters while on the continent the French and Austrians have made short work of the autonomy formerly enjoyed in Alemannic lands. They must now enviously look to the Italians who as yet still partially remain masters of their own affairs. Perhaps they're the beneficiaries of the Turkish-Spanish struggle over the Central Mediterranean in that it keeps those meddlesome "barbarians" distracted. How delighted would such an Italian patriot as Niccolo Macchiavelli be!

Still, it has been a bad couple of months for most lesser powers. Next to their demise in Central Europe, both Algiers' and Moldavia's independence has bitten the dust. At least the proud Ukrainian Cossacks and Central Asian emirs can boast of being free of foreign yoke.

Since there are no pending retreats, we move directly on to the fall season. Preliminary orders are due on 23 November, 6 PM CET (Central European Time, i.e. GMT+1).

Oh, and let me counsel everyone to take a look at one of those maps with province labels on them. I think even those most familiar with the variant could benefit from a little map study.

I for my part am very excited that my other variant playtest is about to start. Harvey, Mikael and Dirk shall be participating in that 1926 game. So if you wish to keep track of their fortunes in that inter-war period scenario, let me know and I'll sign you up as an observer.

Charles

Winter 1650 Retreats/Adjustments - charlesf   (Nov 13, 2009, 4:35 pm)
Grüß Gott!
Sadly I did not receive any Swedish build orders on time. As previously indicated, my policy in this game is to disregard ANY orders submitted after the set deadline.

Now, as you know, I shall replace any player who misses a moves deadline, put the game then on hold and have a replacement player submit an order set for that season, next to allowing for sufficient extra negotiation time, of course. This is one reason why I require you players to submit preliminary orders at least 48 hours in advance of the final deadline.

But as I outline in my house rules, the same player replacement procedure does not apply to one failing to submit retreats and adjustments. Of course, failing to submit retreats/adjustment orders in time can be easily averted by immediately responding to the release of the prior adjucation with a set of orders. Sigh.

While on the subject of my GMing policies, I might again point out that I do correct any orders mistakes I deem entirely unambiguous. I wouldn't want say insufficient map knowledge (space names etc) unduly marr the game. That being said, I strongly recommend you study the names of the respective spaces and check whenever vaguely in doubt of a space's name.

Preliminary orders are due on 16 November, 6 PM CET (Central European Time, i.e. GMT+1).

Liebe Grüsse,

Charles

Subject: 1648 091010: Fall 1650 Moves - Correction

I forgot to note that Russia's units may yet retreat prior to their now inevitable removal. After all, the Russian armies may yet want to take a tour of the country saying their farewells to their loved ones. Anyway, I've amended the below adjucation accordingly.

---

Grüß Gott!

I apologise for the delay in adjucating. After returning from Scotland, I'm afraid I had more pressing matters to attend to. Since I was travelling, note that I didn't confirm the receipt of any orders during that time.

Now, the jury is in on Russia's continued survival. A determined set of foes proved too much for the Romanov autocrat. The Tsar's hopes that the Moldavians and Ukrainians would lend him support as they pledged to do were dashed by these being embroiled in conflicts of their own. As for the unruly raiding parties from Central Asia, these sided with the Poles and proved critical in the king's conquest of the "Third Rome". Mikael, please send me your EOG before too long.

Denmark fared also quite poorly, as both Christiania and the United Provinces were lost. Depending on F UPr's retreat, Marc will have to remove either one or two units.

In the centre, the band of minor powers stretching from Rome to Heidelberg remains intact.

Note that it's once again time for you to submit your Keppler Award predictions, should you wish to alter the set you previously sent me. Since Russia's now effectively eliminated since her retreats cannot prevent that from being the case, the prediction voting for the "next eliminated/lowest final SC count" power is limited to the other eight powers. Much as the vote for "highest final SC count", of course.

Just as a reminder: You can change your set of predictions in any way you see fit after each fall adjucation. Every winter you get a prediction right, you score one point. So, any who predicted Russia's poor showing last winter have already scored one point. I also should add, that you can join the whole Keppler Award prediction contest at any time, though of course not having participated right from the outset amounts to a missed opportunity to rack up points.

Remember that adjustment orders can be made conditional on ANY retreats. So you could tie your builds to whatever happens to Denmark's F UPr, the only pending retreat this season. Retreats/Adjustments are due on Friday, 6 PM CET.

Liebe Grüsse,

Charles

1648 091010: Fall 1650 Moves - Correction - charlesf   (Nov 12, 2009, 7:46 am)

Charles

Grüß Gott!

I'm afraid other commitments this evening kept me from releasing the adjucation any earlier. Matters are certainly heating up across the continent. The English finally tasted their first salt water as both the Bristole and London squadrons set sail. Yet, apparently contrary to Danish expectation, the London fleet tacked north rather than patrolling the English Channel. The good citizens of Christiania now look to be defenceless in face of a possible English descent.

The Tsar's domains may not be quite as defenceless against foreign aggression, yet a formidable array of foreign forces are assembled on the Tsar's doorstep. The autocrat's hardy Don Cossacks however have grounds to boast about their Crimean exploits, though it is as yet unclear whether this expedition bears the character of a raid or that of outright conquest. In any case, older Russians must be bemoaning the return of the Time of Troubles that plaged poor Mother Russia earlier this century. It remains to be whether 1650 spells an end to the Romanov dynasty.

Further to the South Spain manage to crack down on Algiers' corsairs and install a new regime beholden to Madrid, thereby firmly bringing the whole Maghreb into Spain's orbit. A most timely development as tensions with the Porte are apparently on the rise. Perhaps the beneficiaries of King Phillip's focus on North Africa happen to be the Pope and the Doge, who've signed a pact of mutual assistance against the two Habsburg lines' expansionism. Indeed, a whole cordon of lesser powers within Italy and the Empire have yet to bow to outside pressure. The Dukes of Mecklenburg were the only princes in Central Europe to cow in face of foreign pressure.

As noted below, Poland-Lithuania needs to signal her retreat orders from the Crimean peninsula. For the other powers preliminary orders are due on Monday 6 PM CET.

Liebe Grüsse,

Charles

1648 091010: Spring 1649 Moves - charlesf   (Oct 21, 2009, 12:45 pm)
Grüß Gott!

The very first adjucation is always something special. One has only the (written) word of one's fellow players to go on. Hopes and fears of what the future holds make for a conflicting cocktail of emotions. Also, since this is only the second 1648 playtest, the comparison to the earlier game's first season holds some interest.

I should say our game features even less overt military conflict than the already pacific start of the first playtest, which saw both the opening shots in an Anglo-French and Turko-Spanish War as well as some ambivalent Swedish manoeuvres on Denmark-Norway's borders. In ours, the English Channel and Ionian Sea witness no such conflict. Instead, Sweden pulled a "Charles XII" and attacked the Tsar, whose own expansion plans were checked in the Southern Steppes. I wonder how long it shall take until other map areas heat up.

Let me thank all players for us being off to a smooth start, having dilligently forwarded me their correspondence and in some cases sharing their strategic intentions with me. It has been most instructive.

Few words on my adjucating. Since I'm entering all the orders into Realpolitik and letting it work things out, the map output takes precedence over the written results, simply because there's less scope for me to mess things up with the former. Rest assured that I scrupulously check and double-check DP allocations.

Talking of Realpolitik, I recommend you download the 1648 module from the DC site. I shall attach the latest .dpy file (a Realpolitik save game you can load once you've got the new module) to all adjucations.

Since there are no pending retreats, we'll be immediately moving on to Fall 1649, its deadline being next Wednesday, 28 October. Note though that preliminary orders need to be submitted by 6 PM CET on Monday, 26 October. I must say I'm really happy with this arrangement, since it provides an extra safeguard against NMRs and allows me to adjucate and discover any mistakes.

Cheers,

Charles
