Thanks, all.

Here???s a short EOG:

I approached England and Germany to start the game, proposing a western triple alliance (once it seemed that both would be reasonable partners).?? I was fully sincere about taking it to the end of the game and remaining loyal to it, although England and I had some initial conversations about moving it to a EF traditional alliance, if it seemed to make sense.?? After the first couple of moves, it seemed that EFG were hitting on all cylinders, and coupled with a couple of missed orders?? by Italy and Turkey, I was moving quickly in the Med.

Austria approached me about working together to eliminate Italy quickly and then turning towards Turkey, and I accepted.?? I didn???t stay loyal long to Austria, but was in the ION with Italy crippled.?? Italy offered to work as my toadie (do people still call it that?) against either Austria or Turkey, and I was good with that until I got worried about needing an urgent build in the west, and I took his last center.?? Frankly, it was a very poor decision on my part, and I should have been chastised more than I was.?? Of course, Joe had turned against Sun in the west, and I really imagined risk of an English win, so I turned full attention to attacking England.?? I suspect he was a little surprised by my reaction to his attack on Germany, but, to be honest, he didn???t do anything to try to cultivate my alliance, so it was really easy for me to stay loyal to Germany.?? Meantime, in the Med, things stayed a balance for me with Austria and Turkey.?? Once I had some success in the west, then AFG were also able to start making progress against Turkey.

As my success with England moved quickly ??? maybe too quickly ??? I started to consider a push for a solo.?? I decided that if I did so, I would let Germany and Austria know and not stab.?? When I finally did this, I figured it was about 50/50 if I could make the right guesses to get to 18.?? I messed up a convoy move from England to Belgium which really hurt me.?? It delayed the ability for me to push the fleets into Scandinavia by one turn, which proved to be fatal to my efforts.?? Sun moved decisively and had very solid tactics, and it was clear to me that he???d stopped me in the north.

At that point, there was talk about a 4-way, but I told Sun and Mike that I would only settle for a 3-way.?? I???ve always felt that the game wasn???t over if more than ?? of the powers still remained.?? I also started pressing Sun on the idea of a 2-way, which we eventually agreed to move forward to accomplish.?? The thing about this 2-way is that either of us could push for a win once we got close, and it was very likely that Mike or Clark would approach one of us making that offer or Mike might defend against only one of us, making a solo a threat.?? I truly was committed to the 2-way draw and had no intentions of taking advantage of the situation.

Then Mike approached me. He said that Sun had turned him down.?? I reviewed the map and when I saw it was possible to end the game in one big move this season, I thought it was worth trying.?? If I had gotten to 17 or 16 this season, I think Sun might have been able to turn this on me and get a solo himself, so it was really an all-or-nothing move.?? I also wondered if Mike was sincere and after a few exchanges about tactics, I concluded that he was.?? In the end, if the move had not worked, I would have tried to salvage the 2-way, would have accepted a 3-way, and would have been OK if Sun ended up with a solo instead.

It was a very fun game (easy to say that because of the outcome for me).?? I enjoyed the ongoing conversations with Sun and Mike, and there were lots of interesting turns and twists.?? Joe???s move against Germany presented some interesting dynamics, as did the constant balance back and forth with Turkey and Austria.?? Russia was also a great conversationalist early on, but the western triple and the good relationship that I had with Sun really doomed the traditional F/R cooperation opportunities.?? I???ve played Dip for many years (guess I started in 197Cool, published a PBM magazine for many years, produced Diplomacy World, and then ran a number of judge servers supporting the PBEM internet dip community.?? Over the course of the years, there are?? a few games that stand out in my memory, and I suspect that this one will be one of those.

Thanks, all, for a good game.

Germany retreats (or does nothing and disbands). We move to winter and France has won with 18 centres.

I???m unsure about the tournament scoring for centers.  It reads to me that 18 centers would yield more points than 13 centers, so it seems I should vote against the proposed solo concession.  Kind of goofy to me, but unless Hamish corrects my thinking, I???ll vote against it???

Weird.

Sorry Clark - you're right.  This is definitely worse for Germany and I'm left with looking at a French solo here...  Voting for a French solo as well.

Vote yes for French solo. Not sure how this is better for Germany than a 4 way draw, but there you go.

Well ... two retreats due from Germany, but as far as I can see we have a French Solo about to be declared.
