DC191 A Study In Baltic - Spring 1904 - The Speckled Band

It was with a clear sky above them that Holmes and Watson maneuvered down the narrow Stockholm streets. The two moved casually, enjoying the good weather. It was the first the pair had seen in several weeks - their overland journey through the Scandinavias being a nightmare of snow and surlish behaviour from the man with the twisted lip. (At one point, Watson had been worried that things would come down to fisticuffs between his friend and their so-called guide. It had been with relief that they had seen the smoke from Stockholm chimneys, allowing them to bid farewell to their villainous assistant.)

"Here it is Holmes!" Watson cried out. "This is the address of my wife's cousin." He tried the door to find it locked, the windows barred and shuttered. "Damnation. Where could they be?"

"Elementary, dear Watson. Your wife has gone with her faithful cousin to Helsingfors, Finland."

"By jove, Holmes, you astound me." Watson turned to his friend. "How on earth can you know that?"

Holmes smiled. "It's easy to tell from the depth of accumulation of snow on the walk that we are the first visitors to this door in some days. The lack of smoke rising from the chimney is clear indication of a cold hearth... And as for the rest, well, it is explained in this note found sticking from the mail-slot."....

------------------------------

Indeed, our duo's trek through the Baltic is far from over. And they may be leaving Sweden just in time as Polish fleets grow menacingly closer. One retreat is due from the Spring moves - and that from the Swedish fleet in the Gulf of Stockholm. Deadline for the Summer 1904 retreat will be set for Friday, August 8th (11:59 PM GMT).

Please let me know if you spot any errors. Cheers folks!
