remarked "Don't know much, but I *do* know,
a two-fronted war

and likely to end in defeat, no?

Results are in! Turn declared official Save-The-Archer-Day as civs turn out in droves to the pro-archer benefit being held. Meanwhile the Leprechauns - despite their song and dance, find little help. Rogues are eliminated. 2nd out, 17 to go! Wizards are down to 1 dot. Willl they be next? Or will it be the Knights with only 2?
BUILDS due MONDAY! Nov 3, 12 noon Central.

Invitation to new 1648 game - charlesf (Oct 29, 2014, 11:50 am) |
WHAT'S 1648 ABOUT?
1648 is a nine-player Diplomacy variant set in Europe following the Peace of Westphalia.
1648's rules are based upon those of Ambition & Empire, a variant designed by Jeff Kase and Baron Powell. As its most striking departure from Standard Diplomacy, the latter first featured armed neutrals whose actions players may secretly influence by bidding Diplomacy Points (DPs).
This simple rule creates a whole new layer of decision-making and opens up many intriguing possibilities.
For further details, see 1648's dipwiki entry:
http://www.dipwiki.com/index.php?title=1648_v4.3
WHAT ARE PLAYTESTERS SAYING?
I think it's fair to say that playtester have been very enthusiastic about the game. The rate of repeat-customers is high. Some have said that 1648's their favourite way of playing Diplomacy on a European map. Or any map, for that matter.
Give it a try. Chances are you'll find it a memorable experience.[Reply] |

Charles,
it's a really exciting and well-constructed variant. I just can't accept having to cc you on every mail, and having you comment on the number of mails I send and read. If you remove that part of your playtesting, I will gladly play in this one. |

Poul,
thanks for your kind words regarding 1648.
I regret how things went when we met previously. For my part, I was too heavy-handed in my anti-gunboating efforts. I've since learnt my lesson and have adopted a different approach. More thorough vetting up-front, no badgering players regarding their press levels in-game.
But I continue to ask players to CC me. It's invaluable for me as a designer in playtesting. |

Gunboat and Press - Zoterik (Oct 28, 2014, 12:38 am) |
Bryan,
I presume you're asking this question because you saw the open Gunboat game? To be honest, I see little use for "Dark Gray" press, because it can fall into both the "Gray" and "Black" categories--players tend to provide their own headings, and all press can be seen by all players. As such, in a game in which all types of press are permitted, every origin is suspect. There is no need for a GM to deliberately and maliciously alter press.
If you have further questions, feel free to send me an email. Don't forget that players are Hidden from each other in gunboat games, so if you decide to join the game, preserve your anonymity!

Gunboat and Press - Operations (Oct 27, 2014, 9:06 pm) |
Hi folks..
I'm sure this has been answered before, but I can't search a keyword here, and I haven't been able to find an answer online to this.
I'm a bit fuzzy on the difference between Dark Gray and Black press, the difference between "officially" attributing to a fake author and "unofficially" doing it.
At face value, it sounds like officially would be the GM saying, "Hey, this message is definitely from (incorrect author", and unofficially would be them saying "This might or might not come from (incorrect author)", but that doesn't sound right. I'm thinking press wouldn't involve the GM deliberately lying.
Could someone please explain this better to me?
Thanks!

DC507 - Fall 1872 - Operations (Oct 27, 2014, 8:41 pm) |
As the year draws to a close, the alliances are solidifying. Russia and China work to carve up Japan, while France and Holland work to whittle away at China. In the Balkans and Middle East, it's every man for himself. Time will tell if one more of the powers will start working together in this region as well. No retreat phase this turn, so can we go right to Winter! Deadline for Winter is October 29th. Builds/disbands are as follows: Britain: 6 (0)

GM: Anticipated retreats have been done for years in order to speed up games in postal diplomacy; I will agree they are not needed as much in email play. The trick is to figure out which units could be dislodged and then make a list of places for it to retreat to. Start with spot you
